*NEWS BREAK* < New England - Patriots caught cheating using cameras >

With spying accusations leveled this week against the Patriots, some of the Eagles left from the NFC title team are wondering if New England used bootleg film to their advantage in the Super Bowl.

"Do I think about it? Mmm hmmm," said Brown, their starting cornerback. "It's crazy. I just don't know how far back it goes. Something's not right about that."


Pro Bowl safety Brian Dawkins found the accusations troublesome.

"Now there's always going to be questions about the situation," Dawkins said Thursday. "Was it great adjustments at halftime or what?"

Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward said this week that he suspected the Patriots had some type of inside information on the Steelers before at least one of the teams' two AFC championship game matchups since the 2001 season. While Ward said the Patriots knew a lot of Pittsburgh's calls, none of the Eagles could offer any type of solid proof of any shenanigans.

On Thursday, New England coach Bill Belichick was fined the NFL maximum of $500,000 and the Patriots were ordered to pay $250,000 for spying on an opponent's defensive signals. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also ordered the team to give up next year's first-round draft choice if it reaches the playoffs and second- and third-round picks if it doesn't.

"I would like to think it's just one team doing it, but it doesn't shock me that it happened," Dawkins said.

Some Eagles said occasional signal-stealing is an accepted part of the game. But they believe what the Patriots are accused of doing crosses the football morality line because it threatens the integrity of the game.

"It's different if you're talking about recording it," Dawkins said. "What can you do if you try to signal a play in?"

"I think they should forfeit, man," said punt returner Reno Mahe, smiling. "We won the Super Bowl. I think we should get it. I'm going to go trade my NFC championship ring for a Super Bowl ring."

The headline over a picture of Belichick on the back page of Thursday's Philadelphia Daily News might have said it all: "Counterfeit RING: Spy Scandal Helps Explain Birds' Super Bowl Loss."

Hey, maybe the illicit tape would show once and for all if Donovan McNabb really did get sick in the huddle late in the game. Remember, that was Philadelphia's first excuse for losing.

McNabb -- who insisted the Eagles would never stoop to those kind of tactics -- was surprised to hear the allegations against the Patriots. But he said the suspicions might be overblown.

"One thing people are forgetting is that even if you have the answers to the test, you still have to take the test," he said. "If they have an idea of what's coming, those guys still have to be able to execute the play."

That doesn't mean McNabb won't clear some space in his jewelry box. For a city that last saw a pro team win a championship nearly 25 years ago, the Eagles might accept a retroactive one.

"Maybe we'll get our ring back," said a chuckling McNabb. "Maybe we'll get the real one."

That means not only did they need a new rule invented to win a game, but they also needed stolen signs and they still only won the superbowl by a last second field goal (3 TIMES!)? Competition breeds cheating. I don't know why this is such a huge surprise. Kind of like steroids. You push the limits to win. Two kinds these days: cheaters and losers. But don't think pushing ethics is anything new, cheating has been a part of competitiveness since it began.
I watch racing alot (I know it is a different sport and some would argue not a sprt at all) but, if a team doesn't get busted for cheating ever, I think its an indication they aren't trying hard enough.

I see this whole situation as something that the public and media is making a huge deal out of.. Yes, they lugged some equipment on the field to steal signals and what not, but look at it this way.. In baseball, the third base coach and the manager are giving signs to the player batting and players on base. It would be the same as if you video taped those signs and analyzed them. I mean, EVERYONE in the ballpark can see these signals, but only the players know the cipher. If an MLB manager decided to video tape those signals, and analyzed them and figured it out, then really who's fault is that. I say it's the teams fault for not changing up their signs. Even when i played baseball we had new signs every game.

Either way, next year they're probably going to pass the rule to allow defensive captains to have radio's in their helmet and this will be forgotten about. I just feel that when you say what happened, it sounds a lot worse than it is.. Everyone in the stadium can see these signals, but Belicheck decided to record and analyze them.. and according to his interpretation of the rulebook, he felt that he could do that.

A lot of people talk about how it really doesn't mean much but its just common sense, if it means nothing why do it? Especially after the NFL just made a big deal about warning people not to do it. Apparently there's more to it, like offensive coordinator's headsets all of a sudden jamming during important moments when teams have to play at New England.

Belichick's statement was a joke. He misinterpreted the rule? The rule that says you can't film ANYTHING on the sideline, especially not the other team's signals? That's a real vague rule, I can understand Belichick's trouble in figuring that one out ::** Arrogant cunt.

In the end the punishment is not that harsh. Its not like its their only first round pick, they had two, they have a shitload of picks stocked up for this year. 250,000 to the organization is like a couple bucks to most of us. 500,000 for Belichick sounds bad but he's loaded, and its not like it matters either way cause I'm sure the Patriots will end up paying it.

At least the NFL does something about cheating. MLB should take a lesson from this.

I hate the bandwagon also.. im from RI so i have to hear it from the Pats fans, the Sox fans, and NOW the celtics fans after they win the East this year.. The reason why NE is this "dynasty" is due to the system.. and thats why Belichick is held so high.. Up until this year the Pats were never, or not even CLOSE to stacked with great players.. I have Brady's stats up, i'm not a stat nerd or anything, but from 2001 to 2006 his TD's are 18,28,23,28,26,24.. i mean that is good for an NFL QB, and he has had completely CRAP receivers over the years.. I don't see Brady as a montana or elway or marino or even manning, but he is very efficient and one of the most consistent and solid QB's of the last decade without question. Belichick gets a lot of credit because there was such a lack of stars on those teams.. it had a lot to do with the playbook and style of offense that he created. I don't know if you just hate the Pats or what but they've been completely solid with a lot of average/slightly above average players within the last 6-7 years and that is what makes them a dynasty..

If you make it to the nfl you're a good player regardless of what anyone says. Players on the colts are just as athletically gifted as the players on the texans, the difference is the colts don't make stupid mistakes.

I hate the pats because they never should've made it to the '01 superbowl. The tuck rule is the biggest pile of crap ever conceived in a rule book. He was tucking it in towards his body, thats not a throwing motion which would result in an incomplete pass, that is simply trying to hold the ball bracing for a hit when it popped out and therefor should've been a fumble and oakland's victory (i'm not a raider fan). Last second field goal in 2 super bowls to win and a 3 point win over philly. Thats really scraping the barrel to get a dynasty.

Belicheck's offense isn't anywhere near what the west coast offense (created by joe walsh in cincinnati) was. It was way more innovative than a bunch of screen passes which is essentially what belichecks ground breaking offense is.

I don't consider west coast offense more innovative than Bellichicks attack at all.. look at the most recent dominant west coast offense with the Rams of the late 90's early 2000/2001.. they had Warner and Trent Green and Bulger with torry holt/isaac bruce and a number of decent 3rd/4th wr's.. you need pro-bowl caliber receivers for that to work.. AGAIN that is why Belichick's offensive scheme gets credit due to lack of pro-bowl talent.. Whether or not the Pats won by 30 or 3 in the superbowl's that they won, they had PLENTY of wins during the season and teams did not want to play them.. you can't base the season on a 3 point superbowl win against the best team coming out of the NFC, give me a break... There have been a few flukes throughout the sports world over the last decade, where teams have won championships that i don't deem worthy, but the Patriots reign of the AFC and NFL is no fluke whatsoever.. and you can nitpick at the tuck rules and in's and out's of there reign but if you think that it is a fluke as a whole then you simply just do not like the Pats.. there is no other explanation.. i HATE the chargers, but that doesn't mean that they're not good.

Screen passes aren't innovative. Making a passing game that not only nets you big gains but also works as well as a good running game when your running game is subpar is genius.

Walsh was obviously a genius, there is no dispute there.. but look at recent teams who have used west coast offense, as i said before the St louis rams.. they had marshall faulk as there running back, which made it plenty easy to pass or run with the threats they had.. this type of offense hasn't been done succesfully in years.. well at least a true west coast offense.. but you're finally catching on to what i've been trying to say.. when you mentioned a running game that is SUBPAR.. look at the patriots roster, and look at who made the pro-bowls the years that they won, or even had good seasons.. it was Brady a few times, corey dillon recently, maybe troy brown (haha) in 2001, and probably 2-3 defensive players, that's it.. POINT it that the pats were effective with SUBPAR players, with the exception of when dillon finally came along.. Belichick made his offense work with average joe receivers and average runners.. as much as the screen pass is boring and simple as hell, WHY FIX WHAT ISNT BROKEN.. it worked for them, and you can't talk negative about it cause it worked..

It's funny cause you'll have conversations with your friends, and they'll say wow Kurt Warner on the Ram's must've been good, but heck you could've thrown any average QB in that offense 'the greatest show on turf' and throw the ball downfield and you'd look damn good yourself.. Not to take anything away from manning cause he is brilliant, but if you had his receivers then you'd throw for touchdowns too.. and with the exception of this year, 2007, you could NEVER say that for Brady, and he still got the job done.. they were able to win with average talent, and it had to do with play calling.
