Erik Morales to continue fighting??
This is from an article posted by pacstraightleft in another thread. I think it deserves its own topic:
Quote:
Sportsman-businessman Hermie Esguerra told The STAR recently Morales decided to skip the Las Vegas bout because he will be in training for his rematch against WBC lightweight champion David Diaz.
“I called up Erik to wish him a happy birthday last Sept. 1,” said Esguerra who became acquainted with Morales during his first trip here early this year and is now a close friend. “I’m sure Erik doesn’t want to take away anything from either Manny or Barrera so he’s not attending the fight. Besides, he’ll be training for Diaz.”
Esguerra confirmed Morales’ decision to unretire and take on Diaz anew. Last August, Morales announced his decision to retire after losing a disputed 12-round verdict to Diaz in Rosemont, Illinois, thwarting his attempt to become the first Mexican to win four world titles in different divisions.
Let's all hope this is not true.
Morales has taken far too much punishment over the years. He should not continue fighting.

Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
Oh my gosh, you're joking!!! What the heck is he thinking?! When someone as skilled as Morales loses(although he should have got the W he still struggled_) against a journeymen like Diaz,it's time to call it quits. He even said in an interview after the fight that punches were having more of an effect on him now than they have ever done before! I guess the lure of making history proved too much.

Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
What's the biggie? It just proves that Erik is not a quitter. Him and his most fans want that 4th title. He didn't do bad against David. In fact, he got robbed from that fight.

Erik doesn't need to fight David Diaz again to prove he's not a quitter. He proved he wasn't a quitter about a decade ago.
Morales has been in more wars than any other fighter of the past 15 years. I think most of his fans would rather he be able to talk 10 years from now than worry about a 4th title.
If Erik Morales were anything close to his prime, he would have demolished a fighter like David Diaz. The very fact that the fight was even close is clear evidence that Morales is a shell of the fighter he once was.

I totally agree Sweet Pea :coolclick:

Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??

Excellent posting,CC in24. I'm a huge huge Morales fan,but he has nothing left to prove. Look at his resume,it's one of the best of this generation. I'm worried about his health, like SP said,he has been in far far too many wars and not just that but making weight must still kill him too. Remember,he balloons to 160 plus at times and he's not young eeither. You're a legend Morales,a hall of famer and one of the best ever, just retire!!
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
I for one am glad to hear morales may be back to fight diaz. Its not as if he had a beating was it? he is still YOUNG - shit its' not as if hes some 40 year old who had a beating in his last match, it was close, erik should of got the win, this time hopefully he will.

Erik should go for it. Diaz is not a big puncher. If Erik was fighting Casa, or the other 2 Diaz's, then I would worry on EM's health.
Besides, how often do we see 3 great trilogies by 1 fighter? SRR accomplished that, and Erik is just 2 steps away.
Go Erik!
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
WTF has this got do with SRR? ??? ::** A David Diaz-shot Erik Morales trilogy should not be compared to SRR trilogies. And like I said,Diaz may not be that great a fighter but he will put pressure, throw punches, something Erik does not need to take more of.

Oh yeah?... why is that?
I just said "trilogies", not win them all. I was just asking how often do see fighters with 3 great trilogies?
Diaz is just one dimesional f*ck that undeservingly awarded the win for him.

A trilogy with David Diaz isn't a great trilogy. David Diaz is a journeyman who would get pounded into the canvas if he were facing a prime Morales.

That remains to be seen. You'll never know bud. ;)

Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
The EriK Morales of old would have finished Diaz off after the first knockdown in round 1, instead it goes 12 rounds and despite the close decision against him he looked like a worn out fighter.
Does anyone really believe that Diaz is a better fighter than Morales?

You can see the result on their faces after the fight. Erik's face was normal, David's was all fwocked up primarily in the eye area. Ofcourse Erik is better than Diaz.
David Diaz has marshmallow chin and punch like a girl ;D compare to Pac I'd say.
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
I still believe Erik was robbed of that important win against Diaz. Go erik, knock Diaz out and prove to the world that you can still do it.
Erik is my man. A true warrior!!!!!!
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
i still believe in erik. he can still do it.
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
David Diaz is a southpaw. Hey! maybe Erik will use Manny as sparring partner this time. Pac is way faster and hits harder than Diaz.
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
I guess he wants to go out on top. He knows he can beat this guy so he wants to go for it one more time. The fight was close. I think if Morales had a little bit more in the tank he could have won.

Morales was one of my most favorite fighter fighters of all time...but what's done is done & it's time for Erik to hang it up.

exactly. it's just a question of stamina cos he lets himself blow up in between fights. he can definitively beat diaz this time cos i think he beat him the first time.

Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
don't all boxers want to go out on top? Erik is still a good fighter but not a top fighter. Let him wail on someone and go out with a W.
-
Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
No true fan of Eric's should wish for him to continue to fight. Eric was DONE after the second Pac fight. He should have hung it up right there and then. As SweetPea has said...he has been in as many or more wars than any boxer in recent years. He needs to swallow his pride and take care of his body and mind, not fight some second/third rate fighters hoping to regain glory or "go out on top." He has nothing to prove. It's always sad, and potentially tragic, when great fighters don't know when to call it quits.

A rematch with Diaz I'd accept. But nothing more. He could take another 12 rounds against Diaz, only this time get it at a neutral venue to avoid the robbery. I'm still pissed Morales was denied a Mexican record thanks to a hometown decision. Things like this should not happen.

I've mention this before. David Diaz is not a very much threat with Erik's health. Diaz throws a lot of shots but they're not quality punches. If Erik was going against the other 2 Diazs or Casa, then I wouldn't recommend him exchanging blows with those animals.

Right don't u guys think that when erik failed to decimate Diaz the first time he should just call it quits. Its apparent he's years past his prime and he will only be further depreciated next time out.

Not sure what you are trying to get at...but yeah...his fans should want to see him retire instead of fighting C level fighters...and struggle against them. When a fighter like Eric has given so much...he doesn't need to prove anything to anybody. A few years ago he would have mopped the floor with a guy like Diaz...now...it's a close fight. It's sad and ultimately unhealthy for him to keep on fighting.

Well Erik said right after the fight that Diaz's punches were hurting him to the head, and that's one of the reasons he needed to retire, that punches that didn't use to bother him were now hurting him badly.

"right after the fight"? ??? I watched the interview again (translated in english) right after the fight. Erik never mentioned anything about Diaz was hurting him in the head. He just said "Diaz is a tough fighter, difficult fighter to fight and just kept coming on and on and on".

Re: Erik Morales to continue fighting??
Morales got pissed at the post fight conference because He gave Diaz his credit, then when Diaz stepped up he said he felt he won the fight clearly or somethin, so Morales barraged up to the podium again and launched into a litany of how he was robbed. I think thats how it went.

He didn't fail though!!! Did you come on this board after the fight? There wasn't one post saying Diaz deserved the win. A few said a draw, most had Morales winning. I thought Erik would get KO'ed. Instead, he spent most of the fight outboxing Diaz. If we vote for robbery of the year on this board, that would get my vote because it was just a fight he was being robbed of, it was a legacy.

i thought it was a robbery. the only thing that prevents me from thinking it wasn't a total robbery was the last couple of rounds. erik just needs to stay in shape when he's not fighting so that he wouldn't have to get rid of so much weight and not lose gas during the homestretch.
