Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
I've seen O'Grady doing commentary for years now, and he's always referred to as "The Champ". I always figured that while he was no legend, he was damn good with his flashy record, but I never could name anyone he fought, and people don't talk about his fights much. So, the other day I looked up his record on Boxingrec.com and I found out why. This SOB fought so many 0-0-0 guys and bums that its not even funny. He held the WBA belt for a minute then was stripped of it for not defending against the number one contender. If you haven't seen his record, you should check it out, even after O'Grady was "Champion" and had over 50 fights, he still fukin fought guys in their pro debut. :o

Yep. He's a joker. The ONLY name I recognized on his record was Danny "little Red" Lopez, whom I've never even seen fight, just heard of. And Lopez knocked his ass out in like 2 rounds. Freakin O'Grady.

O'Grady is a joke and Lopez was very good fighter i see his 2 fights with Sanchez i respect boxers who get in the ring and take risks but fighting 0-0 fighters when you have had 50+ fights ?? sorry i can't respect O'grady at all and if i was working with him as commentator i would call him a chump instead of the champ because he isn't no champion in my eyes.

no way is his the worst.

The most deceiving record you'll ever see in your life. The only person he beat with a winning record was 5-2-1. If you want a lugh go ahead and look up the mercer ko.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
I guess i will have to come to the defense of O'Grady here, I like his commentary. Who cares if his record was padded. So he wasn't the best Lightweight going around, a lot of sports commentators around the world have never even played the game they are commentating on and yet are regarded as being good at what they do.
I reckon most of the good posters on this forum could make good boxing commentators and who of us has had that many fights.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
Kind of crazy that he was over 70 wins getting fights against guys with no wins...those commissions should be ashamed...

It's that infamous mid-west circuit here and it still pulls that s!!! off.
bring out a guy who is so-so in skill and feed him all the home cooking he can eat.More proof that bloated glossy records mean nothing unless they are EARNED.

And that's why they call him champ. Like it or not, anyone who wins a belt gets that distinction bestowed upon them. I will admit, I know absolutely nothing of his career but I do like his commentating.

Nope, we all know THEE most padded record in boxing history is held by JCC. He fought nothing but bums throughout his career and a bunch of cab drivers.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
I have talked to Sean O'Grady on several occasions ...... I never seen him fight.. nor am I familiar with his record... I can tell you , that you wont find a nicer person , anyone that has met him will tell you that same... Top man !
it was years ago.. I vaguely remember him telling me that he had several surgeries during his career to shave off the edges of his high cheek bones, said the high cheek bones caused him to cut and swell something fierce..

I grew up in OKC and I watched A LOT of Sean O'Grady's fights growing up. There have been some very true and untrue statements made and I would like to put my two cents in. One, he was most certainly one of boxing's great bleeders. I saw him fight some guy on TV whose name escapes me in OKC I believe. I forget how it happened but he got cut over one eye and I have never seen a fighter bleed so much. There was blood from his forehead to his toes. He won but it was pretty gruesome. Two, his father took advantage of him pretty bad. He was not a nice guy in a lot of ways but what can you expect from a boxing promoter? Lastly, yes he got spoonfed quite a few opponents. BUT, realize he started boxing professionally at 15, no doubt with encouragement from the old man who was his promoter. As talented as O'Grady was, (and he was talented) a guy barely into his teens has no business being in the ring with legit contenders. His daddy thought that Sean was good enough to take on Danny Lopez. He figured that Lopez's career was slowing down. Sean went in swinging like he did against those jabronies he fought in OKC and Lopez handed him his ass. Lopez won the featherweight title later that year. Over time, O'Grady would occasionally fight legit fighters. In 1978, when he was 19 I think he fought Eddie Freeman in Las Vegas. Freeman was 21-1 and O'Grady won by TKO in Round 1. A month later he fought Romeo Anaya who was a former Bantamweight champ and won by TKO in 3. A couple of years later he fought undefeated and top contender Gonzalo Montellano and won a split decision. Four short months later he's fighting for the Lightweight championship against Jim Watt and was ahead on points in the 12th when the ref stopped it on cuts because of a Watt headbutt. Since the fight was in Scotland they said it was because of a punch. Scotland being the home of the champion. O'Grady was ahead by 4 points on 2 of the scorecards. Five months later he's fighting Hilmer Kenty for the WBA title. (Watt was the WBC champ.) Kenty was 20-0 and had already defended it 3 times successfully. He was also BTW the first world champ from the Kronk. O'Grady beat him in 15 and it was in no way close. After that it gets weird and can be Googled if you need more info. He did fight Pete Ranzany not too long before he quit and it was the first boxing card Sly Stallone ever promoted. O'Grady fought at welterweight and lost a close decision to a guy who once fought for the Welterweight title and had fought Leonard, McCrory, Benitez, and Cuevas. So to say he was overrated and never beat anybody is a little unfair. He was a legit champ. I think he was handled wrong and got burned out from fighting 10-12 times a year for 8 years. With proper training, promotion, and management(which he wasn't getting from his father) he could've been Lightweight champ for at least a year as long as he stayed away from Arguello.

The Hilmer Kenty fight was a great competitive fight. Your right that his father ruined his career. It hink his biggest mistake though was going with "Bubblegum" as a nickname ;D

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
I just read his boxrec profile. Yeah he was spoon fed opponents. One thing i go give him credit for is being acting though, 32 fights in 1975 and 76!LOL
You never see that kind of activity in the ring anymore. They should have been considered sparring sessions more than actual fights.

he was managed by his dad who was one hell of a character and even formed his own sanctioning body. dont blame sean he's a good bloke he boxed who was put in front of him.

Sean went in swinging like he did against those jabronies he fought in OKC and Lopez handed him his a**. With proper training, promotion, and management(which he wasn't getting from his father) he could've been Lightweight champ for at least a year as long as he stayed away from Arguello.
first of all, get your first cc from me and another cc tomorrow if you are still here.
Nice of you to defend O'Grady. I was planning of doing it but you made a very good point here. Actually, you said it all. O0
defend what ?? most of his fights were against 0-0 fighters you can't defend anything he fought mostly bums and when he stepped up he always lost one of the most padded records in boxing history.
Padded? Yes. Always lost? The facts say otherwise. All successful boxers records are padded to a certain degree anyway. Pretty Boy Floyd is the best fighter in the world right? One year before he won his 1st title he fought two guys a month apart. Their records? 14-11-3 and 20-18-1. O'Grady's daddy the promoter wanted him to fight in OKC so that's where he fought. He had no choice who or when to fight. Who was he going to complain to? His father? Sean O'Grady was a goldmine for his father and he milked it for all it was worth. His daddy wasn't interested in putting on a competitive fight, he was intersted in putting asses in the seats which put money in his pocket and Pat O'Grady rode his prize horse absolutely into the grave. Sean fought TWO world champions in FIVE months. He beat Kenty and should have beat Watt. When he fought Ganigan it was his 11th fight in two years. He was WORE OUT. You cannot do that to a fighter.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
I'd have to say Sven Ottke takes the cake. Every decent fighter he ever fought he lost to and was given gift decisions.

Oh please do not even compare Sean to Mayweather most of Sean's opponents were 0-0 fighters or fighters with losing records any time he stepped up in opposition he lost Mayweather beat a great fighter like Gernaro Hernandez in only his 21st pro fight and has stepped up plenty of times and proved he is a great fighter when did Sean step up and beat great fighter and prove he is a great fighter ?? never because he never beat any his record is a joke and your saying his dad was the reason Sean fought 0-0 fighters ?? wasn't Sean a grown man ?? no one forces you to anything Sean was happy fighting bums.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
Valuev is the fighter currently active with the most padded record i think. Lots of question marks about his early career.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
Sean O'Grady fought Jim Watt in the hotbed of Glasgows Kelvin Hall 30 years ago. Watt is still regarded as one of the great British boxers. In the 12th round (of 15) of a great fight O'Grady had Watt serious trouble. Watt headbutted O'Grady, cut him badly and O'Grady was robbed as Watt got a ridiculous TKO.
I remember how gracious O'Grady was in defeat. He (and Watt, in fairness) had resisted turning the contest into an Irish Republican versus Scottish Prodestant match, which is what the promoters were hoping to make it at a difficult time in Irish history.
I guess we figured O'Grady, at 21 or 22 years old, was bound to get a rematch at some stage, but it never happened. I presume Watt did not fancy it. The next we heard O'Grady had retired at 24.
For this fight Sean O'Grady is fondly remembered in these parts for his bravery, skill and sportsmanship.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
I don't think O'Grady thought of himself as a world-beater or HOF material. He won a Light-weight championship, retired young after giving boxing his best shot, and went into broadcasting, pretty smart move if you ask me, what's not to like about Sean?

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
Well wait a minute. Was O'Grady great? No. But he was good. And he beat a series of good fighters.
Hilmer Kenty was unbeaten and ranked #4 when O'Grady beat him.
Romeo Anaya and Shig Fukuyama were fine fighters but well past it by then.
OK, so he beat Hilmer Kenty ;)

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?
Brian Nielson's recorded is/was ridiculously padded(not sure if he's lost a lot in recent years).
Just throwing it out there.

OK, so he beat Hilmer Kenty ;)
Brilliant, he operated pre-1985 so he gets a pass for truly terrible opposition ;)
Oh but he fought Hilmer Kenty, another guy who really didn't beat anyone of any real note. C'mon man, you would give a modern guy all kinds of shit for fighting the people O'Grady did. I mean, damn Saul Alvarez is practically a hall of famer compared to him.

I dunno, the first two lines seemed pretty unsarcastic. I pray he was, I really do. O'Grady was terrible imo, he was the poster child for what we've seen too many promoters do in the last 20 years.

Re: Sean O'Grady-the most padded record in boxing history?

I thought the wink sort of signified that, but maybe I'm wrong?
