Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
Just wanted to find out does anyone on here know much about Barry Mcguigan or did they see much of his fights, and do you think he was a good fighter...He seems to get a good name...

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
Well i don't think he deserves to be in HOF he had few good wins Juan La Porte, Bernard Taylor, Eusebio Pedroza, Nicky Perez, his dad also used to sing his song before McGuigan's fight started McGuigan was starting to make name for himself he was incredibly popular at that time and was about to set a match against Azumah Nelson so he chose an unknown Steve Cruz for tune up fight this fight was a pretty bad loss for McGuigan but great fight by the way there was little controversy because Mcguigan wasn't used to the heat and it was scorching hot i can tell you anyway McGuigan was ahead in the fight and then started to fade in later stages he got dropped in 10th and 15th i believe and lost close decision and then after the fight had to go to hosptial due to his dehydrated state then about year after that fight his father died and it affected him badly he used to say his father was his greatest inspiration but he comeback had good win over Nicky Perez who fought Salvador Sanchez and also beat Francisco Tomas Da Cruz then in his final fight fought Jim McDonnell and lost by cut stoppage in 4th i believe one thing that was disappointing was if he would of won Cruz fight he would of fought Azumah Nelson shame that didn't happen.

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
Anybody who has seen Pedoza fight knows what a great win that was for McGuigan, the Taylor victory was immense too. But yeh I agree that he doesn't have the longjevity to be a HOFer. Much like Honeyghan, his prime was too short!

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
His flame burned out pretty quickly, but he was massively popular in the UK at the time. Probably more popular with the general public than Bruno and Hatton combined.
Barry McGuigans Boxing for the Spectrum 48k was also a tremendous game!

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
I have a little rumour here about Barry that fly abouty in the Irish gyms:
When Barry fought Cruise, the majority of Irish peopl (and particularily Northern Irish People,) invested in what they saw as a sure-thing for our Barry.
Now Barney Eastwood, Barrys manager just to happened to own something in the region of 70% of the bookmakers shops in NI. This created a conflict of interest. Barry wins=Barney still has a world champ.
Barry loses=Mr.Eastwood obtains a substantial amount ofmoney.
The story that is commonplace here (and is not denied!) is that during the fight (which took place in a climate we as Irish people would melt in!) Barry was given no water after round 1 on the orders of Mr.Eastwood.
The reason that Barry was inducted into the boxing hall of fame is not only because of his own boxing career it is the infleunce he had on hundreds of thousands of Irish people. Anybody who's bin about the past twenty years or so should be aware of the violent turbulence that occured in our little country. McGuigan helped ease that, he was the Catholics, the protestants, the republicans and the loyalist poster boy. He was non comittal to either side, having his dad sing Danny Boy, rather Amhran na bhFhiann or God save the Queen Nobody was a touch of class.No1 had ever transcended religions the way Barry McGuigan had. He endorsed the sport, he was is and always will be adored by the Irish and indeed the British.

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
what was that song about Mr.Eastwood? ???
If anyone has a copy of the tape they could view it and see if the water rumour is true?
good fighter not HoF imo.
-
Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
The tape was released after he won the title, befor his defence so he was still on good terms with Eastwood upon its release and in actuality he had little to do with the production of the song. The song title was "thanks to u Mr. Eastwood." or something along those lines. It was released in recognition of Barry's constant displays of respect and gratitude toward Eastwood, which makes it all the more interesting that they split and are not on good terms now.

I was hoping to get there first with that one lol.. he also married a protestant woman if im right or catholic...well the opposite of his religion to ease tentions between the two..
But boxers dont get inducted into the HOF just because of there skills Barry 100% deserves his place there..
Barry killed a fighter in the ring as well didint he...cant remember who the hell it was though.

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
See thats a clever little detail there. It was never announced or published what religion Barry is ;)
For the record i believe he's a Roman Catholic and yes he did marry a lady of a differnt religion to the best of my Knowledge.
Boxers name was young ali.

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
Well Hitmandonny im not sure if i believe that story or not but i just think McGuigan didn't climatize himself and payed the price in the end because he thought Cruz would be a tune up fight for his big showdown with Azumah Nelson.

Re: Barry Mcguigan:Anyone see much of him or know much about him.
Read a book and from the Cruz fight he had a swollen ankle and could not train in the last week of the fight. He said the climate was so hot that a walk outside made him sweat anyway.

Cruise was only a substitute that night, McGuigan had trained all wrong if u ask me, my Dad was at the trainin camp saw him take ice baths to recover, training for that heat and using Ice ???
My Dad sees that story as gospel, im a bit sceptical but to be honest im starting to believe it the more trainers i hear it from.
Barry is a hero, really is.
