Why I hate Larry Merchant
This is an episode of my show(the newest) You'd find it in my show topic.
Youtube messed up with uploading again(so the sounds a little behind)
But I thought this was something important I would share with the forum because I feel like I can express myself to ya'll.
I didn't do the intro song. The following is very heartfelt and I was very sad when I said this but I kept it together.
Thanks

Yeah bit I actually said why in this video and I didn't go crazy. I was actually very sad while saying this(thoughts of the dead boxers and such) but I kept it together this time.

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
That's a good vid. Majesty, I agree completely with what you said about Larry Merchant's bloodlust. It always seems that the most critical voices come from those who have never fought.
-
Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
Well said man, you get a CC from me. Agreed with everything you said.
-
Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
I know you have mentioned it in every video but I gotta give you a big CC for that video. You made some great points. I agree completely with everything you said but why does a part of me like Larry Merchant? I dunno wether it's because he makes me laugh..or because he's been the voice of boxing so long? I think I laugh at him more than anything and how he always clashes with Jim, Harold and the guest commentator.
You're right about the sport and art of boxing though. People piss me off for getting on the case of defensive fighters also. They can win every round and still be criticised for not trading. I too do not see these people as true boxing fans. Sure you can have a preferred style but if you can't appreciate the fighters that are masters of their craft then you need to reconsider wether you truly do love boxing. Or wether you need to watch something else that will satisfy your thirst for blood EVERY time.
Nice one Majesty, keep the vids coming. You're almost making me want to do a video :)

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
CC # 398 Majesty .
I can appreciate you thoughts, .. You bring up some good points no question.. However don’t think for a moment there is not art and technique involved in aggressively perusing your opponent. Your greatly miss guided on that assumption, trust me.
all great boxers Sugar Ray Leonard , Pete Whitaker ext they had the mindset to win. utilizing their technical abilities in an offensive manner, while defense played a role it was not the complete focal point . another words they had determination factor, they had desire to win , when the opportunity presented itself they closed the show..
Chris Byrd is a very nice man, you won‘t meet a nicer person however he does not have that spark to capture the imagination of the fight fan.
Byrd uses an open palms stance , its shit. vs. David Tua for example. Byrd left his right arm fully extended most of the time, which is against the rules of boxing, and while I like Jay Nady a great deal, he snuffed on that, Jay should have been warning Byrd for doing that continuously and take a point a way. Chris was trying to guide Tua’s direction with that extended right hand. , a great boxer would not have had to resort to those tactics in a match ,
I felt Tua won the match . However that’s another story.
As for Larry Merchant. I think he is spot on most of the time. He calls it as he see’s fit. Merchant has been involved in boxing for many years and has sound knowledge of the sport, make no mistake. Anyway.
Enjoyed listening to your thoughts on the subject., keep up the good work. - God bless

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
Could this be the reason why you're picking MAB over Pac? ;D...

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
Nice vid Maj,I enjoy listening to your thoughts. You make lots of valid points but 1 thing: boxing is not anything specific. Boxing can be whatever the individual makes it.
If Merchant wants to see it as a war between 2 fighters, and he thinks its about blood, sweat and tears, then it can be for him. I do agree,he can be over critical and OTT at times but still, he's entitled to interpret boxing as he sees fit.It is disappointing at times, for example Spnks v Taylor,he was complaining Spinks was running and that was silly but hey,his opinion.
I've seen some fighters even see it the way he does,I'm pretty sure in an interview a from a while back,Andre Berto mentioned there was too much dancing around and that boxing should go back to it's roots, gladiator style, giving the crowd ko's etc to cheer about. Just an example, boxing can be what the individual makes it.

Yeah I know I agree on its whatever an individual makes it. But Merchants comments are like thats what boxing should be to everyone, know what I mean? And thats wrong.

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
Yeah,I see where you are coming from Maj but remember,Merchant has been a boxing fan and commentator longer than most of us have been alive. He sees the threats to boxings popularity such as MMA so maybe thats why he starts a war cry about fights? Remember,he has'nt always been like that. Watch Mayweather v Castillo 1,he enjoyed that fight, which was definitely more of a boxing match than a brawl. That's just one example.

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
I can not speak for everyone but Larry one of the best announcers around and one of my favored to listen to besides Cossel so you can hate him but i like listen to him commentate on fights

Re: Why I hate Larry Merchant
I think you have to bear in mind that Larry is a broadcaster first and foremost representing the world's premier boxing PPV channel commentating for people who have paid $40 or $50 dollars for a fight.
I know boxing is a sport and an art, but prime time PPV boxing is as much about entertainment as it is anything else.
People who pay $40 of their hard earned dollars to see a fight want to see a fight if you know what I mean and Larry is doing his bit as a voice for the people.
I absolutely agree with you regarding Chris Bryd and Cory Spinks doing what was necessary for them to be able to win but at the end of the day they are also on the worlds biggest prime time network, with their million dollar paydays the result of all the fans paying to watch them fight.
If they play to their strengths and adopt a safety first attitude to try and win fights it might make more sense for them, but the fans have every right in the world to choose the type of fighters they want to pay money to see and the majority of ultra cautius defensive fighters will never become big name stars.
Larry as the host of HBO is representing the fans that paid money to see the fights and therefore has an agenda in that its in his and HBO's interests for the fights to be entertaining so that people will pay to see them.
If he tried to make every fight sound entertaining and riveting others would say he wasn't sincere.
One place I do disagree with you is over the Contender. I'm starting to go off that show as its editing borders on ridiulous.
When you've got a fat plodder like Miguel this week lumbering around the ring, with every wide, plodding punch accompanied by an orchestral score to me it just trivialises boxing. They attempt to make every punch, shuffle and feint a moment of high drama with the result being the show doesn't really have any drama.
Save the rocky style scores and slow motion epics for worthy fights and events not a 5 round club fight between an overweight bus boy and an untested novice.

Then they should do the absolute best they can to win right? So why take away their advantages. If you're on prime time the main thing you have to do is win.
Not for nothing, but I'd rather beat someone my own way on primetime network then fight their way and get knocked out.
I'd rather be the guy known who won, then the guy who showed heart but got beat.
Thats what seperates Gatti from Hopkins and also why Hopkins is 42 and still has his wits while Gatti is in his 30's and can barely speak anymore.
And about the contender, what they do now is they show you the fight with sound effects and etc on the show.
But if you want to catch the actual broadcast fight(no sound effects or whatevr) then just tune in the next day, they show the fight uncut and in its entirety for people that have the same complaint as you about it

I know what your saying and I too appreciate the pugilistic arts but nobody can tell that Spinks vs Taylor was anything other than a complete travesty of a fight.
I don't blame Spinks, as you say why would he trade when that would just mean getting ktfo but I do blame Taylor. He fought like a man with no heart and passion.
Spinks didn't do enough to take the title though, he just set out to spoil and pinch a victory in the dullest possible manner.
Good for him, it's his career after all but still shit for the paying fans and Merchant is imo doing a decent job when he agrees with them that the fight is shit, at least he's not being phoney like some commentators who never criticise no matter what.
