B Hop interview(very good read)
http://doghouseboxing.com/dhb/cassell100307.htm
MC: Okay, I am going to give you some names as possible opponents for Kelly Pavlik. Tell me who would win and why. Winky Wright and Kelly Pavlik. Who wins?
Bernard Hopkins: I like Pavlik, and I think Pavlik would stop Winky. I think he would be him up real bad. Do you know why? Because I had Winky first. (LAUGHS) I took Winky OLD PHILLY style. It wasn’t pretty, but I did it like they did it in the old days. I mugged him.
MC: Okay, how about the Viking Warrior. Mikkell Kessler
Bernard Hopkins: Very very tough fight. I believe Kessler would win it though. But tough to call.
MC: How about Joe Calzaghe?
Bernard Hopkins: I like Joe Calzaghe to beat Pavlik if they fought. Calzaghe throws a lot of punches. He gets in close, and would take away the range of Pavlik. Those long arms need space to build power. Calzaghe would smother him.
I agree with this(apart from the taking Winky part) ;D

You grab This from Doghouse yeah Gamo?
Read it there earlier alright, god he doesn't like Taylor much does he? ;D

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
For all those that thought Hopkins would fight Pavlik, not one single mention of it there, yet he's watched Taylor-Pavlik 8 or 9 times.
Old B-Hop sure does rate old Calzaghe.

He give Pavlik a lot of credit saying he exposed Jermaine, yet Taylor "beat" Hop twice. And he doesn't mention the outcome of him v Pavlik. I'm notimplyin Bernard is intimidated by Pavlik, i just think it might show that Hop is ready to step out.

I hope so,he's my fave fighter, but I just dont see the point of these fights anymore
Whats left to prove to anyone?

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
Well, I think beating some of these guys at a bigger weight does add something to his legacy. All of those middleweight defenses and the two most impressive scalps are former welterweights. Dominating Tarver after moving 15 pounds gave him a little something extra, and I think taking on a guy like Calzaghe or Kessler (depending on the winner) would add something as well.
And, while Hopkins has lost some speed, the old man is so damn crafty that I can see him beating either of those guys. There also isn't much downside to him taking those fights, because if he wins he's an ageless wonder beating at top 6 or 7 p4p fighter in their prime, but if he loses people will look at it like Leonard getting beat by Norris and say he was just old...more or less give him a pass.
-
Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
The one thing that everybody agrees upon is that Hopkins is hard to beat.
Not in the commonly thrown about sense but quite literally he i a hard fighter to defeat.
-
Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
The thing is Pavlik's win really helps Hopkins in terms of getting the Calzaghe/Kessler winner as he has said wants (well, he called out Joe, but I'd assume he'd go after Kessler if he wins). Had Taylor won, he probably would have been the next big fight for the winner sometime in '08. As is, it appears Pavlik will stay at 160 and make at least a few defense, and Taylor's loss obviously makes him a much less attractive candidate for now, so Hopkins would appear to be the biggest name available for the winner to fight.

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
good read.
pavlik vs hopkins would be kinda pointless at this time of hopkins career as he would't get much reward if he would win. pavlik would probably win also because his workrate is too good for hopkins at this stage of his career.

Hate to do it...but totally disagree.
No one has Hopkins work rate or craft & Pavlik is strong...but to raw for someone like Bernard.
The win would be awesome because Hops drops down & beats the man that beat the man...think about it.

i dont think he is intimidated. I mean, he went way outta his weight class and beat up Tarver. I think the fact that pavlik did something he could not do (beat taylor) bothers him. I think the fact that the man who has 2 wins ( questionable or not)over him was just knocked out, i believe it makes him feel jealous, or bothered that he couldnt do it. But i dont think Bernard is intimidated at all.

He talked about all those guys fighting Pavlik but never once mentioned the possibility of himself facing Pavlik in that interview.
Fighting someone half his age at this stage is clearly not an option. Right and all.

I was thinking about this match up the other day....
Hopkins has more than enough hustle to mug Pavlik. Relatively speaking, Bernards style is definately Krytonite. He'd take Pavlik walkies, then shut him down. Shove him about. Nut him. And out score him decisively.
The thing is, i dont think he could do it for 12 rounds. This match up, at this point in both fighters carrers, is a damn sight tougher than Hopkins-Trinidad. Plus there is a possible issue with Hopkins going from 160 to 175 and back down to 168... At 42. I dont care how much B-Hop has defied logic. Thats a move that is as risky as it gets.
Pavlik throws a lot. I dunno if he can throw - and press - and jab like that for 12 rounds. Nor do i know if he can sustain the drive he's shown in previous fights while being seriously outsmarted but at this point id stick my neck out and say he can. He's young and very hungry, i dont think Hopkins would quite succeed in mugging Pavlik of his will to knock him into retirement.
If Pavlik dosent win this one by points. (which its easy to see why he wont) I can see Hopkins having to hang seriously tough, hurt and worn, for a good 4 rounds.

i can agree with you on the fact that hopkins moving back down and beating pavlik would be good. but beating him is the trouble. hopkins has power but doesn't have the power to ko pavlik so it won't end early. only thing that could get bhop the win is his footwork and counter punching. but everyone knows that bhop only counters with one punch whenever he gets the option nowadays. that ain't enough to keep pavlik off. so the fight if it was too happen be like this. starts off with hopkins on his feet, alot of moving around left and right feinting the jab, pavlik moving forward and throwing trying to catch hopkins, hopkins throwing his single shot counters. the judges score it to pavlik on the fact he was more active

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
Whilst B Hop is awesome at shutting fighters styles down,I don't think he has what it takes to beat Kelly at this stage of his career. Sure,he'll be wiley, sure,he'll use his head, his old Philly tricks etc but Kelly throws alot and he throws hard. And if you don't have something to keep him off with, sooner or later, you're going to get hit and hurt.
And yeah, obviously B Hop must be jealous,he struggled and looked average v Taylor for 2 fights(I thought he won the first but results are results,it wasn't a robbery),whereas Kelly just KTFO JT out.

Hopkins does such a good job of keeping his chin tucked that it is next to impossible to knock him out. He's so crafty and so good at knowing just how far he can bend the rules and get away with it that I could see him mugging Pavlik and taking a decision. It'd be an ugly fight, but it would not shock me. I could also see Pavlik winning just by being busier, but I don't see him (or really anyone else) KOing Hopkins.

yEAH sure,I don't think Kelly would knock him out but work rate and he would land at some point=win.

Hopkins in his prime would destroy pavlik, but now, i dunno man he is OLD - one of the signs of fighters fighitng far past their time is holding, and he done a shit load of that in the winky fight...
I think pavlik could stop him now, to young to strong to hungry and high output...

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
If Pavlik and Hopkins fought the only way Pavlik would win would be if he knocked out Hopkins.
Do any of us see that happening?

That's really silly man. Did JT clearly beat Hopkins the second time on points? Unanimously, most if not all agree, yes he did. How? He outworked him. Pavlik outworks them both. Pavlik could win(and would imo) by outworking Hopkins.

I actually disagree with you Gamo i thought 2nd Taylor vs Hopkins fight was just as controversial as the 1st meeting Hopkins was slighty more active than he was in 1st fight and landed 41 more power punches than Taylor i thought Hopkins won.
And i don't know what you mean by Taylor outworking Hopkins.
Overall punches.
Taylor threw 391 landed 124.
Hopkins threw 371 landed 130.
Power punches.
Taylor threw 182 landed 60.
Hopkins threw 240 landed 101.

Firstly, stop going by compubox EVERY SINGLE TIME! ::** ::** When I watch the fight the first time,I try to ignore/pay minimal attention to compubox, their stats are decieving(watch the Spinks Taylor fight where JT magically lands more punches in a round, which to the naked eye,he landed nothing clean and nowhere as many as compubox states)
Secondly, those stats are DEFINITELY decieving. Hopkins may very well have landed all those punches more, but the majority of those punches came in the last 4-5 rounds. JT consistently threw punches all throughout the fight,Hopkins let his hands go much more but only in the later rounds, ergo, the misleading stats. JT took the earlier rounds,Hopkins took a few of the later rounds via bigger margins.
Finally, you are the ONLY person on this board I have seen dispute the fact that Hopkins lost the second fight. No-one,not even WACKO,the BIGGEST Hopkins fan on this board disputes it. I understand you mean well but you should not try to nit pick at points allllll the time. And don't ALWAYS rely on compubox,it's useful in some instances but certainly not here.

Ouch :-\ ;D
Okay... Although were not all coming to the same conclusion as far as the outcome goes. I get the impression that were all on the same page with regards to what both guys are capable of and what they need to do to win.
Generally i feel that 'Hopkins by UD' is a logical and safe prediction to make. Its a prediction that makes perfect sense based on what we can take as fact.
Speaking of facts Im guilty of making 3 key assumptions that lead me to believeing Pavlik will win.
These are:
1. Hopkins will show his age
(Although i must disagree with Preme about the Winky fight. I thought his holding, although out of character and excessive, was all part of the 'mugging' process between two point scoring fighters... If you can't take my word for it, just look at Ricky Hatton ;) )
2. Pavlik will stay hungry and keep throwing
Even though he'll be made to look amaturish
3. Pavlik will hit Hopkins cleanly
Now this is based on 1 & 2 and of course is the easiest to discount as Hopkins is never hit cleanly (As LeftHook better explained) but don't forget those body shots ;)

There not deceiving they were pretty much even in punchstats all the way i watched the fight about month ago and Taylor was certainly not outworking Hopkins.

Actually i made topic about this fight about month ago and i certainly wern't the only one who thought that way i had quite alot of replies and people thought the sameway as me i thought 2nd fight was just as close as the first the earlier rounds were more harder to score where as in the first fight Taylor pretty much won almost every round up until last 4 rounds i think i had Hopkins only winning 1 or 2 rounds in the early stages of the first fight.

Good post, CC.
Compubox is just a couple of guys sitting rinside, pressing buttons when they deem a punch has landed. They can be VERY wrong and VERY misleading.

In a fight like Taylor vs Hopkins where one punch was landed at a time it wouldn't of been that hard to tell whos landing what Fenster so i would say punchstats were pretty accurate all im trying to say is that the second fight was just as close as the first and i brought up punchstats because i doubt El Gamo would take my word for it about Taylor not outworking Hopkins all i see was a very boring fight with both men not doing alot and one punch getting landed at a time i wasn't disppointed Taylor got the decision but imo Hopkins won and i thought 2nd fight was just as close as the first fight thats all im saying.

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
I think Pavlik throws the type of punches that would land against Hopkins. Hopkins is great at rolling with punches and blocking them with gloves, but Pavlik threads the needle very well with his punches and he would land.
If they fought now I predict Pavlik would win a decision, possibly scoring a knockdown in route to it. He would not stop Hopkins though as Hopkins is simply too smart and would tie him up to throw off Pavliks timing. It would be a long tough fight for both of them.

You shouldn't keep putting so much faith in punchstats. You've been posting the funkers all over the shop.
Two plums sitting ringside pushing buttons whenever they THINK a punch has landed is no different to a judge choosing the winner of a round based on who he THINKS won the round.

Re: B Hop interview(very good read)
CC back Fen. I agree,in some fights, punch stats CAN be useful BUT in a fight like Taylor Hopkins 2,they don't tell the whole story. Going merely by punch stats, the fight wasn't even close,Hopkins threw more, landed more etc However, watching the fight with my eyes, most saw JT take the intitative, win the early rounds,Hopkins won some rounds by wider margins than JT won his,but overall,JT won more rounds. Punch stats can't vouch for that.
And sure,it was easy to see what was being thrown as they threw 1 punch at a time but it dam sure as heck was not easy to see what was landed. This is because of 2 reasons. Firstly,B Hop and JT's styles didnt mesh well, the action was scruffy and whenever B Hop threw a punch,he would lunge in at the same time so it wasn't clear if it landed or not. Secondly, the guys collecting the punch stats are human and could be influenced by other factors such as the crowd cheering etc etc etc.
