Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
I was watching Barrera-Morales I the other day (for about the 100th time), and in-between rounds they show Hamed's brother sitting in the stands. The HBO crew commented that he was there scouting Barrera and Morales, because Naz wanted to fight the winner at 126 pounds.
Morales of course won the fight (the Fight of the Decade in my opinion) on a controversial decision. Many people thought Barrera deserved the win, although I've always felt the decision was correct and that Erik had earned the victory. (I thought Erik also won the 2nd fight with Barrera but that's besides the point).
So my question is... if Hamed wanted the winner, why did he fight Barrera instead of Morales??
1. Did he think that Barrera really won the fight, and therefore thought he deserved the shot? (I don't think this answer is the one.)
2. Did he think Morales was more dangerous than Barrera, and therefore chose the opponent who he thought would be easier to face? (More likely.)
3. Did he try to fight Morales, but a deal couldn't be worked out?
Does anyone know?

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
I'm pretty confident it was number 2. He thought he would have a better shot at MAB. Morales waited a long time for a shot at Hamed. JMM waited an even longer time,I'm pretty sure he was Hamed's mandatory for a LONG LONG time. Even MAB and EM ducked JMM back then when he was the quintessential counter puncher.

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
I don't think theres 1 right answer,I think it's a mixture of several things.
After the 1st Erik-MAB fight Erik moved up to Feather and quickly got a shot at the WBC title. As we very well know Warrens got the WBO in their back pocket for Hamed to fight Erik and bring the WBO into a fight with Erik & the WBC title would have been a no, no. I don't think there was enough money Warren could have payed to have that OK'ed at that time. MAB stood at Super Bantam and I also think the loss took some effect on him, he got a gift from the WBO and kept the belt when Erik moved up in weight. MAB made some defenses and got some wins against OK opposition while Erik kicked some ass as a Feather by beating literally beating Kevin Kelly, Guty Espadas Jr. & Inji Chi. All top prominent fighters at that moment in time. While MAB beat (at Super Bantam) Luis Freitaz, Jose Valbuena & Jesus Salud. A lot of people forget that MAB moved up in weight to face Naz it takes a lot to move up in weight and for your 1st fight at a new weight fight for a title even more to face someone like Naz at that moment in time.
When you look at what both fighters did after their 1st meeting (Erik & MAB) I think it was pretty clear for Warren who was the weakest link. He thought it was MAB boy! was he wrong.

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
Who knows. But Hamed would have lost to either of them. For all of Hamed's power and flash...he lacked the heart and skill to beat two legendary fighters like Marco and Eric. That being said...i actually think he would have the better chance against Morales. Eric would have eventually been lured into a brawl against the brash Prince...which against a big puncher is always dangerous. That would have been an entertaining fight with Morales eventually stopping Hamed. I don't think Hamed thought Marco would put on such a technical clinic. He probably thought he would just come out and bang with him. But as we all saw...Barrera showed what a masterful and tactical boxer he could be.

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
Hamed/Morales would have been absolutely explosive!
-
Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
at the time they said they wanted the real winner i.e Barrera, I suspect they wanted someone who would come forward slugging & be open to Hameds strong counters. In actual fact they chose the wrong guy as that would have been Morales. :) (exciting fight).
When emanual steward was commentating on Barreras tune up fight with jesus salud, he jokingly made the remark I think we picked the wrong fighter, because mab chose to box to dismantle salud. ;)
so hameds team may have thought they were going to fight the winner of mab/morales 1 in many peoples eyes. I think they were after a big name who people thought was past his best at that time! & who had been in several wars.

Marquez was a nobody back then. And then when he got his shot against Norwood he lost.

Marquez wasn't very well known, but back then he was seen as the best counterpuncher in the division.

Naz wasn't even with Warren then. Interesting theory though ;)

Probably best to ignore him then till he becomes somebody ;)

And Cesar Soto, Augie Sanchez, were really that much more known than Marquez ?? and you also forget Marquez gave Norwood all he could handle who was 35-0 World champion.

You can't be in crowd pleasing fights all the time but he still deserved his shot and while we are on the subject why didn't Naz fight Norwood either ??

HBO didn't want it, they thought it would be a shit fight. And around that time Hamed fought Soto for the WBC belt instead.

I think the point is it was big risk, little reward. And with other fights on the cards, why take that risk?
Besides, in hindsight (even just before they eventually fought) it wasn't damaging to Barreras career, not taking him on, was it?
IMO, it probably would of been far more damaging not taking Hamed on ;)

Everyone knew Barrera beat Morales in the 1st fight so if Hamed beat Morales he would have got little cred . He needed his defining fight to be against the top dog but it was a bad choice . In hindsight im sure he wishes he met Morales who was much easier to hit and had less boxing ability .

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
Hamed fought MAB on the basis that Junior Jones had koed him , so he figured that at some point he would do the same , of course both fighters were far to good for hamed in my opinion , Morales would probably have KOED Hamed.

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
Morales isn't as smart as Barrera
Naz would of hit him, and if Naz can hit you he can hurt you.

The Morales that fought Pac first fight would have been knocked unconcious by Naz. Naz would have only had to hit him with around 10% of the shots Pac did to make him sleep.

Morales fought very good fight counter punching on occasions Pacquiao would rush Morales and catch him with some shots and Morales would fight back but remember Naz doesn't throw as many punches as Pacquiao and Naz has terrible defense all Morales would have to do is counter punch and put a bit of hurt on Naz here and there and keep circling Naz and he would win i see Naz struggle with alot of lesser fighters than Morales.

Ive seen Morales get hit plenty by much lesser fighters than Naz. Morales would of been too macho against Naz and ended up paying for it.
Plus you have to take into consideration where it takes place. Naz always fought shit in the States. In England Naz would of toyed with him before making him sleep.

Well obvisiously Morales has got hit by lesser fighters everyone does this is called boxing do you remember Cesar Soto vs Naz when Soto was applying effective aggression in later rounds and was doing a good job of it so then Naz had to do that backbreaker move ?? or whatever its called and knocked the wind out of Soto that was very controversial or what about Ingle fight when Ingle was close to stopping Naz in the 10th round and bloodied his nose ?? or getting knocked down 3 times by Kevin Kelly ?? or what about Medina fight ?? Naseem always had terrible balance and terrible defense a prime Morales who had granite chin and great counter punching skills would eat Naz alive.

Chins don't matter when you have power like Naz.

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
power doesnt matter either if you cant land your big punches , like Hamed v MAB lol , or if you diagree why didnt Hamed win that fight ?
also :-
MAB - Hamed fought a better fighter in the uk ???? lol
Sanchez - Hamed fought a bigger puncher on UK shores ??? lol
Soto - Hamed fought a guy with a better chin in a UK fight ??? lol
Pocker Rocket - Hamed fought a guy with stamina like that in a UK fight ??? lol
Kind of a trend here :)
go away you TWAT !
YOU ARE IN LOVE WITH HAMED , FINE JUST SAY IT :)

YOU ARE IN LOVE WITH HAMED , FINE JUST SAY IT :)
Ok. Well Barrera beat Naz, right? Junior Jones kicked the shit out of Barrera, right? Well Paul Ingle kicked the shit out of Junior Jones. So why didn't Paul Ingle beat Naz?
Why do I have to go away? I'm enjoying myself.
And no I don't love Hamed, he's not my type, too short.

The point i was making was , you commented on Hameds power , and i was making the point that he didnt have the ability to catch great fighters , ie MAB ,so how was he going to beat Morales.

Are Morales and Barrera one and the same? If not, then it's highly possible Naz could of hit Morales, right? If Naz could hit Morales it's highly possible Naz could hurt him, right? If Naz could hurt him it's highly possible Naz could beat him, right?
You must agree, right?

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
Yes its possible Hamed may have hit hit of course , but remember Morales would be hitting back , and Eric had a granite chin , i just dont see how a limbo dancer with terrible balance and power , beats any elite fighter.
but if you dont agree then fine but i think you wont be in the majority.

[/quote]Carnt argue with that! :coolclick:
If naz hit you with a clean shot most fighters were in trouble its when he couldnt hit you eg MAB he struggled some times.

OK, we're getting somewhere now. There is NO right or wrong answer. We're discussing the possible outcome of an IMAGINARY fight. It's just a bit of FUN!!!
Fuck knows who would have won. What I do know is it would of been GREAT to have seen it actually happen.

Re: Why did Hamed fight Barrera and not Morales?
I think the bottom line is that Morales vs. Hamed would have been a more explosive fight. Barrera was always the smarter fighter than Eric. Marco by that time could adjust his style accordingly and wouldn't have been foolish to just go in and slug it out with a big puncher. Morales on the other had would brawl it out. Against a big puncher...that is always dangerous. That being said...no way Morales would lose to Hamed. Eric had too much skill and would eventually stop him. All i'm saying is that Hamed could have potentially fared better against Morales.
