Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
I'm not talking about a fighter who people duck due to having a difficult style, I'm talking about a fighter like the 80's Mike Tyson who once a guy stepped in the ring with him, he began pissing himself and fought like he was scared sh!tless. There's alot of big punchers out there now but no one who has that sort of intimidation factor. Will we ever see that again?
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Good question. I know Valuev scares me; the closest thing to Bigfoot I ever saw. Anyone who can grow hair out of his belly button scares me ;D

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
It will be hard to find another fighter like that because it is not that popular a sport no more. At that time their was a lot of build up around Tyson from a lot of people and boxing was popular at that time. You would just say his name and everyone knew him and what he was about. Even though he wasn't the baddest man on the planet everyone hyped him to be even people that didn't watch the sport. Everyone was afraid of him. If your a fighter and your grandmother hears Mike Tyson name she would fear for your life just from the stuff she heard about him. No one know hears about these fighters no more, so these fighters can't be hyped up like they use to be. Tyson was a bad dude but most of that was the hype that was stirred up by the media, of things of that nature.

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
There already are a few fighters out there now that are feared...but there at the lesser weights.
Pacquiao & Pavlik come to mind right off the bat.
Pavlik took the title away from Miranda in many people's eyes.

I don't see Pacquiao and Pavlik as being feared, there merely respected, as in opponents have respect for their power. Opponents will still mix it up with them, they just usually win those battles is all. Mike Tyson had guys trembling in the ring and made them fight like bitches they were so terrified. Look at Spinks and you could tell he was so ready to get out of that ring it wasn't even funny. Bruce Seldon basically was knocked out from having a heart attack after Tyson grazed the top of his head

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
pacquiao
pavlik
and
fedor oops wrong sport.
but seriously I agree from above, valuev scares me too....

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
but about another tyson, I doubt it'll happen again becuase as soon as they dubb a fighter like tyson. someone will come in the ring with them and beat them like how buster douglas beat tyson. The intimidating factor is only in the mind, buster proved that. An example of a fighter dubb like tyson is lacy, calzagne bullied him and it all ended there.

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Guys like Tyson, Foreman, and Duran only come around once in a while. What made them intinidating is that they showed no repect to their opponent in or out of the ring in the public eye. Pavlik and Wlad for instance seems like good guys. The guys I listed never did in their primes, and thats why they were feared by other fighters, and captivated so many fans.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
There are tons of guys who have the skills/power to be feared guys. Wlad, Pac, Pavlik are guys that have the attributes that would make any sane man tremble, but like said above none of them really have that "mean" image to them. Guys like Tyson, Foreman and EXPECAILLY Duran had that extra "personality" intimidation. I mean Duran had the full package. Thats rare.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Duran looked like Charles Manson which didn't hurt his image.
Guys like Wladimir are at a disadvantage because they are nice out of the ring, just nice kind people who give to charities and work with kids.....when Mike Tyson was Champ he was beating women and punching gardeners and Mitch Green in the street.....but in the ring I think Wladimir is pretty damn scary.
Valuev just looks like the "Missing Link" he's a shit boxer

He's not just the missing link, he's the whole chain ;D One fighter that could be feared in the future possibly might be Adrian Diaconu. I wished he could have fought Dawson and seen if the hype was real, as he is a very strong puncher, but I guess we'll have to wait. Pavlik could be feared, but I think that's still a ways off, if ever. Somewhere down the line another Foreman or Tyson will come along; hope it's soon.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Pacquiao, Pavlik and Valuev are not feared fighters.....( especially since Valuev hits like a little girl for a guy so big)....Pavlik and Pac are respected for their power but I think he meant feared not in the sense they are dangerous punchers but in the sense that these guys are just all around bad ass Mofo's....More like in the tradition of Sonny Liston, Aaron Pryor, Marvin Hagler....Guys that not only would you not want to face them in the ring but you wouldnt want around your family...

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
define feared fighter please? Coz if DAxx's definition is what you mean,I don't want my guy to be in that list.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Who fears pac lol? they are all calling him ou, pavlik? na aint bodody fear him either, he will get beat soon.
There is to much money in boxing for anyone to fear anyone now.

To answer your question, every body at the flyweight is afraid of Pacquaio. Of course, I'm joking.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Based on looks??
I'd have to go with Shannon Briggs, nobody is too scared of his abilities though.
I don't think that anybody fears anybodies skills at the top level, because those guys think they're the best anyways.

I mean I could be wrong but the way it was described...
None of the current crop meet the definition outlined....I can not think of one guy that puts fear into everyone else in his division that they are afraid before the bell even sounds...Like he said about Tyson....Half of his guys were beat before the bell even sounded
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
I think pacquaio is feared in the sense that no one wants to brawl with him.

That can be said about a lot of fighters though....Just until the McCline fight Sam Peter was feared...Vitaly Klitschko was feared...before the Calzaghe fight Jeff Lacey was feared.....None though put fear in the hearts of guys as a whole though....

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
We are just short of a snarling power punching heavyweight machine like Liston, Foreman (70s) and Tyson. I'm pretty confident that we will get one sooner or later but he'll probably have to be an american with a ragz to riches story so that he can be hyped right up!
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
I don't think Pavlik, Pacquiao, or Valuev are feared fighters. People have been lining up to take shots at Pac for years now and Pavlik hasn't been well-known long enough to generate any fear. And I doubt his fight with Jermain Taylor will steer people away from calling him out. Valuev is a side show who fought low to mid card talent to build up a record.
Fighters are flawed and all the top fighters have shown something that an opponent can capitalize on. Whether it be poor boxing skills or maybe they have shown that they can be hurt, there is always someone out there who believes they can be beat and isn't afraid to call them out.
Boxing is filled with fighters who want to be champions and they are just amped for an opportunity to become one. So show me a so called feared champion and I will show you a boxer who is willing to fight him on three days notice.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Tommy Morrison, what boxer today wouldnt be shitting themselves if they got in the ring with him. A couple of cuts and you got hiv, thats scary shit.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Tommy Hearns always had that Mystique also. That lightning bolt right hand of his had to instill fear in many opponents. Same with Julian Jackson.
There don't seem to be and fighters out there today that have that kind of bad intentions. It almost seemed like they wanted to seriously rip someones head off.
There will be more that will come along though. I hope it is soon. We need a real bada$$ again.

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
You have to say one guy who was feared was Ike Ibiabuchi , he was a bit Liston like , big guy durable , big punch and a PHSYCO in and out of the ring , i cant help but think he would have made a really good champion .
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Edwin Valero would be feared, due to the fact he has had so many first round ko's and hes the WBA champ.

I agree with you on that one Al, Noone was in a rush to fight IKE,,,TBH I think at the time the only guy out there who was a real threat to IKE was Tua who IKE beat but I am talking as afr as stepping in and being able to sit right in front of him for 10/12rds and just go dog out and FIGHT not box but FIGHT......Ike was an intimidating fellow
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Fighters were afraid of Jeff Lacy.
I imagine anybody stepping in against a prime JCC would have been pretty scared.
Right now.....
Valero could instill fear into people i guess.
Every guy Kahn has fought has been brickin it.
I really don't no. Great Question.

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Of course there will be a 'feared' fighter again. I think thats a pretty stupid question.
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Wot about Julian Jacksons CHILLING POWER
Marvin Hagler the master of disaster who just looked so mean.
Tommy Hearns stare (and right cross)
You just cant see it in the current crop :)
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
cotto does have a serial killer look going for him ;)
-
Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Wlad, Cotto, Pavlik, Valero....those guys are feared when they step in the ring....I guaranty you their opponents have an uneasy feeling about fighting them close to the way guys felt about fighting Foreman, Tyson, Hagler, Hearns, and Dempsey

Re: Will There Ever Be a 'Feared' Fighter Again?
Fear Pavlik!
I admit it.
Pavlik reminds me of a goofy white boy I knew when I was locked up. He would hit people with one or two punches and knock them the phuk out. If you saw him, you would not think twice about him and you would even think he was a phuking dork and he was because he would act silly and had some funny looking teeth. He sort of looked like howdy doody. Hatfield was his name. Ronnie Hatfield. But Ronnie knocked fools out for fun and he was always looking for an excuse to knock some one out. He spent a lot of time in Gladiator school. I don't expect many of you to know anything about what or where Gladiator school is. If you know about it then you be thuggin' if you don't know, no biggie.
