The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
A few days ago several of us were involved in a little bit of a discussion regarding the fact that lately there have been some big names retiring this year and we were all wondering who was out there floating around in the void to fill the gap.
After some serious deliberation…I could only come up with a couple of handfuls of names that I thought were going to be truly legit & worthy of hanging my hopes on. I then took those two handfuls of fighters, sucked down a few glasses of Long Island Iced Tea, scanned through a bunch of matches, & oddly enough…those two handfuls of fighters turned into only a few names.
Now…I am sure that everyone has their own picks for their choices of the best up & coming future fighters…& I am sure that you’ve probably already hashed this out with someone else in the past…but I’m ready to hear them & discuss right now…that is…if you got the time & patience.
Post your lists & let’s discuss…better yet…let’s just all start haggling & see what we come up with.
Cheers bitches.

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
My list has got a few fighters on it that have been around for awhile toiling in obscurity…but now that they’ve had their shot…they’re on the way up & the future looks bright. Here’s my list:
Wacko‘s Favorite Future Fighters:
#1: Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon: Prior to defending his WBO minimum weight title 11 times consecutively, Calderon was regularly fighting on ESPN2 to be noticed & respected….now it seems like he’s on HBO every time a mouse farts…& seeing as how all them fwockers eat is cheese…that’d be a lot. As I was saying, after his 11th defense at minimum he moved up to successfully win the WBO Light Flyweight title when he defeated Hugo Fidel Cazares by split decision. Calderon might not be the best known fighter out there…but once you see him you can’t help but love him if you‘re a fan of boxing. He’s one hell of a southpaw & as of October he remains undefeated with a record of 29 wins & 6 knockouts. He’s been featured on a vast majority of Golden Boy Promotions under cards & very rarely does he displease. What he lacks in power he makes up for in smarts & ring ethic…you don’t want to miss this up & coming Puerto Rican star in the makings.
#2: Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz: It took a pretty good while…but I’ve finally found a special spot in my heart & mind for Diaz. With a crowd pleasing style & near perfect accuracy it’s hard to figure out why Diaz didn’t grow on me earlier…he’s got everything that I like in a boxer. He’s fast as hell & he throws a large amount of combinations & I can’t remember a fighter out there that comes close to him in any of those departments. The only thing that “the Baby Bull” seems to be missing is power, but with the volume that he‘s pushing about…it seems that he doesn’t need power to be able to scorch his opponents asses. Juan is definitely one for the future. Currently, Juan Diaz (33 wins with 17 ko‘s & 0 losses) is only one strap away from unifying the lightweight division.
#3: Kelly “the Ghost” Pavlik: Talk about a crowd pleaser. Kelly Pavlik has been on the sidelines for half a decade. Many people have counted Kelly out for the bulk of his career, but after impressively destroying two of the division’s most influential figures in Jermain Taylor & Edison Miranda, boxing fans have finally begun to take notice. As of 2007, Pavlik is currently the reigning undefeated NABF, WBC, WBO, and Ring Magazine middleweight champion of the world. He’s two straps away from unifying the 160lb division much to everyone’s surprise & joy…well…everyone but Taylor fans. That being said, Pavlik is one of the most exciting fighters in the game right now…especially when you take into account that he‘s pushing a record of 32 fights with no losses & 29 knockouts. That’s a hell of a record. After making short work of Taylor & knocking him out in 7 rounds, Pavlik has been nothing but respectful of Taylor, the fans, & the media. Out of all three of the names above…Pavlik has my vote for the next big thing at 160lbs.
I know that’s a short list…but like I said…the others had to fall by the wayside due to the fact that they had been around for a pretty good while.
Cheers…let’s here what you’ve got to say.

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
The two top guys Mayweather and Pacquaio could still be around for a long time, but I think Berto, Kessler, Bute, Dawson, Juan Diaz, Pavlik, Cotto are all exciting prospects or guys who can get bigger.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Pavlik, Adrian Diaconu, Jason Litzau, Jorge Linares, Juan Diaz, Chad Dawson, Tye Fields{ ::** lol}, Kessler,Zab Judah{he's funny-exciting}, Hatton, Cotto, Paul Williams, Margarito.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Most definately Katsidis also IMO.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Bazooka Banal.
Valero.
Pavlik.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
aside from PAC ofcourse.
1. Kelly Pavlik= down to earth technically sound power puncher.
2. Miguel Cotto= another silent type powerhouse just like Pavlik.

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Fighters whom I've been following prior to them becoming champs: Cotto, Kessler, BCDawson, AAbraham, Valero & Linares (Thanks to El Gamo), Luevano (I'll admit I never was big on him but I followed all of his early career), Ponce De Leon, Cazares.
All these guys IMO can fully rule their respective divisions and some are well on their way already. Luevano is tricky for me cause I almost feel bad that I said he'd never accomplish much but he's turned his career around and now I can jump back on and follow him.
What can I say about Solo Boxeo & EPSN aired almost of his early fights that I know of theres only 1 Cotto fight that was never televised/nore do I know of any video on it. But the kid was showed early on that he had the goods it feels good to see fighters like he & BCDawson whom I also started following his career from early on and had the pleasure of meeting.
Fighters who are still prospects/contenders and I hope to see do big things: 'Vicious' Ortiz, Giovanni Segura, JuanMa, Khan, Inkin, Andrade, Haye, JCC Jr.,
Established Champs whom I think will move onto bigger things (Not including fighters I already follow): Sam Peter, Omar Andres Narvaes, Sultan, Erdei.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Dawson, Diaz, and Pavlik are Americas future superstars. Thats who I predict I will be following closely. And since Holyfield, and Barrera are done it looks like they're coming along at the right time.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…

overall: young non-title holders...1.Lee..2.Berto...3.povetkin

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Hitmandonnyys Optimistic view of boxings future:
At heavy Chagaev really seems to be the immediate future. Should he unify i can see him beaten by a fighter who will be the dominant champ.
At Cruiser, Enzo Maccarenelli. Haye is good but cant make Cruiser forever so Macca is heir apparent and i feel thats a good thing. Enzo is the nicest Boxer i have ever met.
Light Heavy: Bad Chad Dawsson. is making all the right noises as B-Hop is winding Down, Tarver is in exile and Erdei seems to be destined to life in the shadows. I like Chad and i can visualise him as a dominant champ in the future.
Supermiddle is a tricky one. Joe will be waving goodbye to boxing, in my eyes as the undisputed undefeated SM Champion. This leaves Kessler as No.2 and he is a worthy candidate. We may witness the reincarnation, rejuvination and redemption of Jeff Lacy as a force in this division and it will remain exciting in my eyes. Jermaine Taylor may also be added to this division as i feel that he really must prove himself from now on.
Middleweight: Pavlik is indeed the immediate future, i expect him to fend off the likes of Duddy with violent ease. Prospective contenders such as Lee and Quillon represent future challenges. And with the likes of Ronald Hearns on the up and up the health of the middleweight division is assured. Sturm, abraham must also be mentioned.
LightMiddle may be more problamatic. There is currently plenty of talent, but they dont seem to be upto much. Since Winky went on his unsuccesful tour of higher grounds this division really hasn't shown much. Paul Williams will be appearing here eventually. Next years Oscar fights may draw some more clarity.
Welter: If ever there was a division more stacked with talent it was the 90's welters. No problems here with current champs set to live on for a long time and dozens of contenders on the up.
Light Welter is expieriencing a little Urban blight at the moment, which is illustrated by the scheduling of a unnecessary rematch between Paulie and N'dou. Prospects such a Demetrius Hopkins do not seem to be moving in the correct ways. A hope i do see, is the athletic Pemberton. (Scott isn't it?) A hard worker, very fit and he's pretty likable. I can see him as a popular champion in a number of years.
Lightweight is similar to Welter. Plenty of Current talent and a bushel opf bright prospects although i expect the loss of Joel Casamayor to come soon. Against my will i acknowledge the fact that Amir Kahn is displaying improvement and may well make waves in a couple of Years. Katsidis....need i say more. Juan Diaz, Manny Pacquiao moving up, no problems here.
Super Feather:
Manny posssible vacating is not all that detrimental to this division. The ever brilliant JMM is currently a very deserving and legitimate champion. Valero is to this division waht Katsidis is to Lightweight. Plenty of Talent.
Featherweight is a bit of an enigma to me at the moment, really cant see much for the future yet. Rafael Marquez is at this weight now right?
SuperBantam has plenty of really good guys at the top now. With Kiko Martinez looming on the horizon and the possible rejuvination of Bernard Dunne things could get exciting in the next year or so.
Below this i really have no idea as the lower divisions aren't my forte.

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Ive always liked Evander Holyfield and Barrera but this last week has proven that at this age they cant keep up with the younger fitter guys . If they both retire im guna get behind guys like;
Miguel Cotto
Kelly Pavlik
I once compared a young Cotto to Barrera in that he is so cold and clinical as he goes about his work
Pavlik also reminds me of Dieggo Corrales . He is a proper fighter with heart and no messing around. These two are always guna be in good fights .

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
You know what...Cotto completely slipped my mind.
Honestly...I consider him one of the old gang now...I've been following that kid since he got crankin.

Surprised you didn't mention Williams either i think he would give Mayweather his toughest fight due to Williams output of punches and his height infact and i know i might be shot down in flames here but i think Williams could be the 2nd best Welterweight when this mini Welterweight tourny is all set and done.

That's the thing though...this is a "My Favorites List" not a "Who are the Top Fighters List".
I could go on & on & on with that shit.
I'm just talking about fighters that I favor...or as the Brits would say..."fancy"...but that just sounds a little to "light in the loafers" for me. ;D

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Well if it's younger guys that haven't been heard of much, here's my list
Jonathan Banks
Andy Lee
Hasim Rahman Jr.
All those guys are trained by Manny Steward

CC returned Wacko, that list could be improved if i had a bit more knowledge of prospects from the west side of the Atlantic.

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Good topic Wacko...
1. Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz
The guy is everything I look for in a boxer. Constant work ethic for 12 rounds, great performer, gives you your money's worth, well educated and he goes after the best. To be one title away from being completely undisputed is pretty special for a guy of 24. He'll be around for a while and I Imagine we'll see some classics from him in the future.
2. Miguel Cotto
I'm English, and I'm flying to New York to watch the Cotto fight against Mosley. Aside from Hatton, he's my favourite fighter, and I honestly believe Cotto has the ability to be P4P the best in the world. Hitmandonny said he liked Cotto but because he wasn't Puerto Rican, he'd find it harder to get behind him. For me, it's great to have national pride, but I will always get behind a fighter like Cotto. Similar to Juan, he's goes after the best and as a boxing fan you can't ask for much more than that.
3. Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik
Pavlik is amazing. I thought his fight with Miranda was fantastic, but he eclipsed that in the performance against Taylor. For me, including the Marquez-Vazquez fight, Taylor-Pavlik is 2007 FOTY for me. You gotta love a puncher, because they can change the find in the blink of an eye.
4. "Bad" Chad Dawson
There are going to be few Light-Heavies who will be able to stand the pace with this guy in the future. He's young, he's a champion and he's showing world class ability already. I'd like to see him step up a gear soon though. Woods, Tarver, Hopkins & Jones will hopefully be soon on his agenda.
5. Edwin "Dinamita" Valero
Punchers are a similar theme for me throughout this, so someone with 22 KO's from 22 fights is pretty much a given to be in here. I really want to see him in better class though, so I can judge whether or not my pick was right.
6. Jorge Linares
His step up in class against Larios really impressed me. I felt bad for Larios because he looked like a shell of his former self. He tried everything to get to Jorge, but Jorge was too young and too fast. This year, that fight epitamised the changing of the guard more than most. I look forward to seeing more of him.
7. Samuel Peter
Even after last week, I have to put Peter on there because he is still improving for me. I like what I've seen from him in the two Toney fights and even in the McCline fight, he did come back from a crisis to pull out the win, and I think it'll be a learning curve as was Torres for Cotto.

If Hasim Rahman had been trained by Manny Steward then he would have been a lot tougher to beat....his reach is incredible and his right cross is powerful....Manny would have made him a big somebody in boxing instead of a one hit wonder.
Andy Lee is a badass
Jon Banks is pretty damned good too

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
I expect the p4p list of late 2008 early 2009 to include some of the following names.
Jorge Linares
Juan Diaz
Juan Manuel Lopez (I expect him to step up by the end of the year)
Ivan Calderon (Though he is just now entering the lime light he is over 30 so he has to hurry)
Kelly Pavlik
Miguel Cotto (As long as his chin holds up....)

Perhaps :D ;D :DLoL
Or perhaps Lee or Quillon? Two really exciting young middles, with the physique which shows potential for climbing weight.

Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Andre berto, the peterson bros, andre ward, jason litzau, the direll bros, not saying any of these guys are the best just guys coming up that i like to see.
-
Re: The Changing of the Guard. Your favorite future fighters…
Here's the relatively young fighters I think can/will become stars and I LOVE:
Miguel Cotto
Jorge Linares
Edwin Valero(those 3 I've followed from day1 and it's been amazing to see them develop)
Then these guys are just awesome to watch and could be stars in their own right:
Kelly Pavlik
Steven Luevano
Cristian Mijares
Abner Mares
Juan Diaz
Juanma
Takefumi Sakata(his style will always lead to exciting fights)
Bad Chad Dawson(HUGE PROPS TO CUtmeMick,he called it on this guy before anyone else, most, myself included, had not even heard from him until Mick brought it up)
There are a few others but those are the ones that stand out imo. In fact if you look at that list, alot of those fighters are latino, and are going to step up in place of aging warriors like Mab,EM,Arce etc/

I dunno about Cotto, i got no faith in his chin at all, and his style needs a chin that can back it up. He might get through mosley, but i think hes going to be one of those fighters who beats big names, but also losses to them, i think guys like magarito will stop him because he can take what cotto has to offer and drop him. Citron's power hight and speed i think will drill him every time and i don't see cotto making it through any fight with him. Williams is another one with speed stupid hight and holds, another fightr i think cotto will strugle with badly...

Honestly...I consider him one of the old gang now...I've been following that kid since he got crankin.

You do realize that this is a "Pick YOUR Future Favorites List" list, right?
It's not a "Let's Piss & Moan About Wacko's List" list.
I figured you dig on Pavlik seeing as how he's been blasting bitches out & he got up to hammer out a knockout win over Taylor...I mean Joe did the same thing back in his day & everyone was still slating him...the only difference was that Joe did it against Mitchell & Pavlik did it against Taylor.
In other words...Joe did it against a chump & Pavlik did it against a champ. ;D
**You can go crazy & run with that one. ;D :-*

Oh! come on Preme.....
I spent months debating the shit! out of ROCKYMARSHMELLOW that Cotto was the future in boxing.
You gotta understand he's already faced big punchers yes they've dropped him but he got up and finished the fight.....
I can't stress this enough remember early Tito he would get dropped by almost anyone he fought, well Tito would dust himself off and try again.
Tito lost when he moved up to Middleweight and had no business there.
I think Cottos smart enough and hes just a guy who loves his job has a plan and executes it.

Ok I'll just mention a couple of guys whi I follow that others havn't mentioned yet.
Odlanier Solis, Olympic Gold medallist and amatuer world champion he's defected from Cuba and advancing quickly in Germany where's he relocated. I'm not sure that the German promoters can speak English as his entrance music is about as profanity laden as it could possibly be, basically like spending an afternoon in the trailer park with Katfights and her kids (I'm only joking Kat hunny ;D)
Steve Molitor, he may have lower legs that even JT Rock would be ashamed of but he's one hell of a smooth operator in the ring. Always considered a slick boxer rather than a puncher he has recently started to find some power and I believe could be the man to dominate the super bantamweight division.
Carl Froch, it's taken him ages to step up but 2008 will hopefully be his year. Joe won't be around for ever and the man to come out of the shadows then will clearly be the Cobra in the UK at least. I'm not totally sold on his workrate yet and he likes to hang his chin showing disdain for his opponents power but he's a vicious nasty puncher who really does strike like a snake. A solid chin, real power and an supreme sense of self confidence will make Froch a nightmare for anyone to face.
Allan Green, I know people will pounce on me for this but I really believe he'll bounce back big in 2008. I think he's picking up a belt for sure next year and could even cause a major suprise by knocking out one of the top dogs in the 160 or 168 lb divisions.
