Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Ok folks, another Friday and it's another of your favourite British Title RBR's, courtesy of me, your host for the evenings fun and frolicks.
Defending his British title will be Carl Johanneson at the Doncaster Dome, up against combacking former WBU titlist Michael Gomez. Here's my analysis of these guys:
Carl Johanneson (26-3, 18 KOs) is the big punching quiet man from Leeds, but is coming into this fight off a devastating defeat in his challenge for the European title against Leva Kirakosyan, where he showed significant bravery in the face of incessant clubbing blows which all seemed to find the target, getting up a number of times before it finished in the fourth round. The big question is whether Johanneson can return from that defeat in the right frame of mind, and whether he can rekindle his string of 8 wins (7KOs) before the Kirakosyan bout, which brought him the title. His power has been the main attribute in helping bring him to the top of the British ladder, but in beating Ricky Burns over 12 rounds, he also showed he's got the stamina to go the distance if that is what is required.
Michael Gomez (34-7, 24 KOs) is only a year older than Johanneson, and is a former British champion who vacated his title, and also holds wins over Alex Arthur, and Johanneson's nemesis Kirakosyan. This comeback phase in his career has seen him claim two wins in May and June over journeymen, but we are still to see how he will face up to a real challenge, since his defeats to Javier Alvarez in February 2005 and the infamous quitting against Peter McDonagh in January 2006. Gomez also packs a fair punch, but I have absolutely no idea which Gomez will turn up to the fight....
I'm backing Johanneson to win this one, who is already pencilled in to face Kevin Mitchell in December if he can overcome Gomez on Friday night. Elsewhere on the bill we have the comeback of Jason Booth, after his defeat against the mighty midget Ian Napa, John Fewkes in his toughest fight so far against Gary Reid.
The show starts at 10pm UK time or 5pm EST, you bring the beers. ;)

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title
Johannsen would have to be favourite, he's much more consistant.
If Gomez wins this tho, i expect Arthur to come for revenge.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title
Gomez wins inside 2 rounds for me , thats if hes up for it . both are exciting tho :)

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title
If Johanneson wasn't coming off the shellacking i'd strongly fancy him. Dunno though.
Can't see it lasting long.

Come on mate. Two big punchers, both with KO defeats in their fairly recent histories to overcome. 12 round snoozer.... ;) Well, actually I reckon it'll be done in 8 rounds or less.
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title
8?
I reckon 3..4 max in an up-and-downer.. These two can both hit, are both fragile, they're gonna go at it from the off - great stuff 8)

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title
Even though Gomez hits hard he hasn't beaten anyone since Kirakosyan - who has Carls number! I think Johanneson will roll over him in 4/5 rounds although nothing would surprise me in this fight.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title
I'm gunna go with Johanneson in a short one. 4 Rounds me thinks, but it'll be close up until that point. The winner will lose to Mitchell anyway, so I kinda see this as 'delaying the inevitable'.

Fantastic pick-up on that one there mate...I just assumed they were starting at the usual starting time for Live Friday Night Boxing, but they've changed it for this week only. Just checked it, and I'm shocked. But anyway...9pm it is, or 4pm EST. And you get your arse clicked :coolclick:

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
I really like Johansson and hope he wins but coming back from a devasting KO like he just suffered is hard. Gomez can bang and knows his way around the ring. He'll have a big pyschological edge coming into the fight thinking to himself he can smoke Carl if he lands.
I reckon Gomez Ko's him inside 6 rounds but I hope I'm wrong as Johansson is one of my favourite British fighters. :-\

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
I was just reading an article on Michael Gomez on Wikipedia....saying that he was born in 1972. Boxrec have him down as being born in 1977, and with his first pro fight recorded in 1995 it isn't completely implausible that he was 18 when he took his first bout. I assumed that boxrec had the right details....can anyone shed some light for me?
And I agree Bilbo, I like Johanneson, he seems a humble hard-working sort of chap, and not the most confident before the cameras when being interviewed, so I hope he does come back with a win tonight.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
I know for a fact these two use to spar quite a bit, and Gomez dominated him nearly all the time.
But that was at least two/three years ago, i would of likes Gomez to have one more fight before taking this as Carl has been fighting at a better level.
But lads i know say Gomez is in tremendous shape and is focused 100%. I take Gomez 6th rund ko.
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
I know Johanneson never says funk all and Gomez is a bit of a loon but judging by their demeanor there's only one winner... and it's not the quiet guy. :-\
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
just posted a thread on UK Boxing...Carl has been sparring with Gary Reid who comes forward winging hooks like Gomez..not saying he hits like Gomez.
Should be a good fight. 8)

Yup, eyes down look in folks, cause the build-up to the fight is taking place right now. I'm thinking we have Fewkes v Reid first...and then the main event on later, but as I'm here anyway, I'll send you a RBR on this one too.
These guys are fighting out of lightweight, and although Fewkes is 15-0, with only 2 knockouts however. Gary Reid last lost out against AJose Olusegun for the commonwealth title, but has been up against a lot of tough opponents. Fight time here is up next, over 8 rounds.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 1:
Reid taking the centre of the ring straight away, with long jabs, and looks to get inside the taller Fewkes' guard with some good hooks to the body straight away. Reid closing the ring down, and Fewkes seems at a loss what to do here. Fewkes throws a couple of jabs, but Reid pressures with more body shots, and Fewkes has been cut over his nose. Reid looking really powerful in there, and Fewkes looks to be in trouble. Fewkes starting to establish his jab, but that blood from the top of his nose is going all over his face. Reid charges forward with a couple of body shots. Fewkes looking to prowl around now, and looking to jab. Reid lunges and misses as Fewkes taunts him in.
Reid claims that round.
10-9
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 2:
Reid again gets Fewkes on the ropes, with three hard body shots, but takes a short hook from Fewkes in return. Fewkes looking to box a bit and open up that jab. Reid comes in with a short body shot, and an uppercut/hook that lands. Fewkes warned for pushing Reid down inside the clinch. Fewkes lands a few jabs as Reid ploughs forward. Reid does well with two jabs and a shot up top. Fewkes still on the prowl, and is making Reid miss a little, but is still not going forward enough. Fewkes with a jab but takes another Reid body shop in return. Reid with a couple more body shots.
Although Fewkes looks the classier, he just isn't doing enough to outscore the charging flurries of Reid
20-18

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 3:
Cagey opening here. Reid gets a body shot off on the counter, as Fewkes missed with a jab. Fewkes puts in a jab to the body and one upstairs. Reid not as actuve in this round. Fewkes with a nice overhand right. Fewkes is pinging a few body shots in, but nothing behind them. Reid with a body shot, a hook upstairs and a hook. Fewkes with a bit of showboating, but he's not throwing enough for me still. Fewkes with a couple of jabs, and a body shot.
I'm not sure if the commentators are watching the same fight as me, as they have Fewkes way ahead.
Tied for me. 30-28 Reid.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 4:
Reid lands the second of a double jab at the opener. Two hard body shots, and he's pushing Fewkes back again. A couple more body shots. Nice jab from Reid as Fewkes swings and misses an uppercut. Fewkes finds the guard with two hooks then pings in two nicer body shots. Reidwith a couple of body shots, and Fewkes is warned for a second time for pushing Reid's head down in the clinch. Fewkes is only landing a few jabs so far. Nice right left from Reid and Fewkes starts to ping out the jab. Good move from Fewkes as he ducks under a hook, then swings one of his own, as Reid is off-balance. Reid with another decent jab, and Fewkes looks to move. Reid with a couple of hooks to the bdoy again.
For me, Reid's workrate is superior again.
40-37

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 5:
Good pair of body shots from Reid. Fewkes with a jab, and a couple of short shots. Fewkes is spoken to again by the ref. Fewkes with a jab, but gets caught by a left hook from Reid. Left hook from Fewkes, and then three right hooks in the clinch. They trade simultaneous right hands. Reid starting to look a little tired in there now. Another Fewkes straight right, and he does seem to be stepping up the effort this round. Body shot, then a nice right as Reid looks to close the distance. Reid swinging and missing again.
Fewkes's first for me.
49-47

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 6:
Reid opening well in this round, with a couple of nice swings. But Fewkes is returning with a nice jab hook to the body combo. Fewkes with a jab, and clinches as Reid comes in. Nice left hook from Fewkes as Reid comes in. Reid with a jab and a body shot, and Fewkes again holding Reid down in the clinch. Fewkes is picking his shots well, but Reid goes big to the body with three big right hooks and a left. Fewkes with two good jabs and a body shot, and then gets out as Reid again swings and misses. Fair jab - straight combo from Fewkes.
Fewkes edges this one, but only just, good effort from Reid.
58-57

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 7:
BNice left hook from Fewkes. He's really got his boots on this round, and is picking his punches whilst Reid swings and misses. Fewkes with a good jab and straight right. This is more the form that won him Young Fighter of the Year. Uppercut from Fewkes, and Reid is getting frustrated. Reid does land a right hand. But a good jab and right hook from Fewkes. Good right hand from Reid after a Fewkes flurry. Reid lands a left hook, but Fewkes had already landed to the body. His countering style is coming into its own as Reid tires.
Fewkes' again.
68-68 On my card the last round's the winner.
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 8:
Fewkes lands a jab, but Fewkes is on the run again, and Reid swinging and missing. Reid gets him in the corner, with two body shots, and a hook up top. Fewkes again warned by the ref. Reid lands a body shot. Fewkes seems to be on the run. Reid with another body shot then they clinch. Fewkes lands a jab, but Reid ducks, and lands two body shot. Good right straight pierces Fewkes' guard. Body shot and right hook from Reid. Fewkes switched off this round. Fewkes with a body shot of his own. Lands a jab, but gets caught with a Reid right hand. Reid with a big finish, three hooks to the body. Fewkes with a left jab, but gets another body shot.
Reid's round for me, and his fight for me, but Fewkes is the winner on the ref's card. Fewkes looke the beaten man, with a cut on the top oif hi nose, and under the right eye.
Ref's score 77-75 for Fewkes. Mine read 78-77 for Reid.

Back atcha Greg. Next up we have the main event, and Johnny Nelson reckons that it will be Johanneson in the later rounds. Personally, I don't think its going anywhere near the later rounds, but we're all entitled to our opinions. Next up its fight time. ;)

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Ok, here#s the ring walks. Gomz getting a great reception, and in his sombrero and rips it off as he steps between the ropes. As he poses, he looks absolutely fired up for this.
As Johanneson comes in, Gomez is on the ropes waiting for him, and they go head to head as he enter. Johanneson looks about as fired up as he always does, calm and collected. This is a pickem fight according to the bookies, next up its fight time.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Damn I knew I should've left my computer at home on, now I gotta wait for it to boot and wait for a miss a few semi-live rounds, ah well my f5 key need a break anyway.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 1:
I think this'll be a cracker folks. Gomez opens with a gvood jab. Johanneson cautious, as Gomez comes in with some good jabs, and an uppercut, but Johanneson's guard seems to hold frim. They're practucally head to head, and trading short hard blows. Gomez doing the hardser work at the moment, but jabs from Johanneson. Uppercut from Gomez gets through. Johanneson with some good jabs. Gomes looking for the uppercuts. Gomez has Johanneson's nose bleding, and Gomez is looking to land body shots and uppercuts. Johanneson is only getting in some jabs so far. Body shots from Joahanasson, and Gomez is getting the better of it, and the crowd is all behind him. Johanneson with a few body shots, and as the bell goes, they shoot each other lethal looks.
Gomez's fantastic first round.
10-9

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 2:
Gomez is at it again, with body shots, and uppercuts and hooks up top. I'm not sure if Gomez has thrown a jab yet. Johanneson is throwing a few punches, some hooks to the body shots, and gets a left hook in. Gomez getting the uppercuts and body shots, and Johanneson's face is marking up pretty badly. Good left hook as Gomez comes in. Jab from Johanneson, and Gomez takes a few seconds to compose himself. Good straight right from Gomez. Johanneson with some boad shots, but Gomez is all-action in there, with even more body shots, but only finds gloves with an uppercut. Johanneson jabbing, and trying to get some distance. Two short hooks, and a fantastic overhand right on the bell from Johanneson.
Gomez gets it again.
20-18

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 3:
Gomez comes out charging, with body shots, but gets a hook to his head in return. Johanneson with some good jabs though, and it's when he's in close he's getting hurt. Body shot from Gomez, but JKohanneson backs up, and lands three and four unanswered jabs. Good rigth straight from Johanneson, and Gomez already starting to show signs of tiring. Uppercut from Gomez, but Johanneson with the hooks to the head, but Gomez coming back with body shots and an uppercut. Johanneson with some good right hooks, which Gomez returns to the bodty. Two good left hooks from Johanneson, and his jabs are holding Gomez back a bit. Johanneson flows with a five-punch combo of hooks and a straight right.
Johanneson's first round.
29-28
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 4:
Gomez looking busy but is finding Johanneson's guard fairly often, but his body shots are still looking pretty lethal. Johanneson's jabs when he uses them hold Gomez back, and let him tee up the straight right. Gomez still comuing forward, another nice uppercut, and a left-right combo. Johanneson comes back with a good jab right hook, hook, jab combo, and each one landing well. Johanneson's accuracy looks better, and Gomez having to come through jabs to get body shots in. Johanneson with a fine jab and stragit right, and the big right hands from Johanneson have Gomez and a left hook, and Johanneson thought he had it won. Five unanswered punches and Mickey Vann was ready to jump in. Gomez comes back, ducking punches, and some big hooks of his own. Great courage.
Johanneson's round, fantastic fight.38-38
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 5:
Gomez opens on fire, with some crippling hooks to the body, and uppercuts, but Johanneson covers up. Johanneson with some jabs, and straight rights of his own, it's a proper ding-donger. Gomez with a left uppercut. Gomez looks to be the more marked up. Johanneson with a left hook right hook, and Gomez gets both. Gomez comes forward with more hooks, and an uppercut, and Johanneson is cut. Jab then a right straight from Johanneson, and then a huge left hook right hook, and Gomez is again shaken. Jab and right hook, and Gomez tells Johanneson that he has the heart banging his fist on his chest. Johanneson is dominating, with big hooks and straight rights, and that last flurry was again amazing.
Johanneson 48-47
-
Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Round 6:
Uppercut from Gomez, and a second as the round opens. He seems to tire at the end of each round. Johanneson with a left hook as Gomez comes in. Good straight right too, and Gomez clinches. Right hook and an upeprcut from Gomez, but Johanneson is more methodical with jabs and mixing the right hooks up well. ANother jab and straight right from Johanneson. Left hook and a right from Johanneson. Two left hooks from Johanneson, but Gomez retorts with some fine hooks. Two good lefts and a right, and Gomez waves Johanneson in. Straight right, and Gomez is down. 8-count. 20 seconds to go. Gomez comes back, Jab, and a big straight right. Gomez shaken, and Mickey Vann steps in.
Gomez seemed to havetaken enough, and was furious to habve been stopped, but good stoppage. Gomez leaves the ring imemdiately, clearly annoyed, but great win for Johanneson.

Re: Carl Johanneson v Michael Gomez - British Super Featherweight title - 9pm UK
Johanneson: "It were tough, and he took a lot of good shots. It were just a learning curve at the end of the day, and his stuff didn't affect me in any way. I think I have redeemed myself, but that was then and this is now."
Maloney: "He just kept things very simple and he showed by keeping things simple and doing the basics right, that you can win the fights."
WHat surprised me is that Frank Maloney ran Johanneson's corner for this fight, and he did a good job from what we saw. He didn't rule out doing it again.
On reflection, this was probably one of the best fight I've seen this year.
