Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
from fightnews
looks like the boxing commission in Wales has nixed the idea of the fight even though the WBO approved it. It was an absolute joke of a fight.
fightnews apparently has talked to a "seasoned veteran" who Warren contacted but apparently it was low money and had promotional options so he, whoever he is, didn't take it.
Darnell Wilson would be an interesting fight but the risk/reward probably means it won't happen.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
spoke top him a few hours ago, there seemed to be no problem with the fight then. As for the seasoned veteran, isn't out yet who he was? Had fuck all to do with the money.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Might aswell do what they do on gameshows where they shine a light down onto the audience and randomly pick a piss head to fight him.
Would be just as competitive as Sellers fight.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Warren is a fucking joke, remember when this card was announced, and the talk was about Cunningham? That was never the case i would be suprised if Sellers is being paid more than 10-15k for this fight, all the money is obviously for the Kessler Calzaghe fight.
There are so many opponents that would of been better Wilson, Frogemeni or even Herbie Hide. But i suppose they are not willing to be paid slave wages to come over and fight Enzo.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
I'd add to that and say there may not be an awful lot of guys below the best willing to fight Enzo.

Lets be honest though outside wales Enzo is unknown. So you cant expect to much money for boxing him.

Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
The problem for journeymen boxers and getting offered a fight with Enzo is that they've all seen what he's done to the "dubiously talented" Bobby Gunn, and they're all going to want some serious money to get in with him, in case he does the same again. If it's not an unification fight, then it puts a whole lot of second tier fighters into demanding big bucks to be what could be a bit of a punching bag.
-

CC superheavy.
Great minds and all that....

The real problem is theres too many fucking titles and if we could get rid of the WBO, IBF, WBC and WBA and get one real title then we wouldnt have these situations were third and 4th rate boxers get to call themselves world champions or get to box for world titles.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Ummm...are you implying that Enzo is second rate?
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Journeymen boxers? Come again?
Enzo is the WBO "world" champ. He's meant to be passed the journeymen stage and he shouldn't be in with anymore journeymen untill he's been sparked out and is on the comeback.

With a top tier of only six or seven fighters, that rules out the vast majority of cruiserweights there are available, and with Mormeck v Haye and Adamek v Cunningham, that only leaves one or two fighters left if he fought the guys you wanted.

Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
WBO rankings
1 Marco Huck GER
2 David Haye GB
3 Johnathon Banks (NABO) USA
4 Vincenzo Cantatore ITA
5 Gregory Drozd (Asia-Pacific) RUS
6 Giacobbe Fragomeni ITA
7 Darnell Wilson USA
8 Herbie Hide GB
9 O'Neil Bell USA
10 Alexander Alexeev (Int-Cont) RUS
11 Alexander Gurov UKR
12 Rudolf Kraj CZE
13 Rob Calloway USA
14 Wayne Braithwaite GUY
15 Vadim Tokarev RUS
David Haye's leftovers would be fine by me. Certainly better than dragging old men out of retirement to get butchered inside 3 minutes.

Surely Gurov would fall into the bracket of "old man to get butchered inside 3 minutes?" As for Fragomeni, I would think that he has thoughts of angling for a bout with Vincenzo Cantatore for the European title at the moment. After that we only really have boxers out of Germany, who wouldn't fight over here, and Americans, who will think they deserve big bucks cause they have the stars and stripes after their name on boxrec.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Gurov can bang, has been in with the best, and is still active. There's a HUGE difference between the likes of Gurov and Ezra Sellers.. who was forced into retirement through a thousand injuries.
Who would you settle for then, Rhun? Cause I don't believe you'd be happy with more journeymen like Bobby Gunn or ancient fossils like Sellers.. all these guys do is continue to make Enzo a laughing stock.

The Mormeck/Haye fight will clarify a lot in this division. Thatl leave one recognised champion. Haye has desperate trouble making the weight and it will eventually begin to affect his performances. Add to the mix the power of Maccarenelli and his ever improving boxing skills and you've got the potential for a world championship there.
You seem to totally disregard the fact that Maccarenelli has being developing in leaps and bounds since joining the Calzaghe camp. I feel in a few years he may well be the one we refer to as undisputed.

Nah he's reached his level, hell never unify anything (and certainley not while he's promoted by fearless frank warren) Hes an average boxer with a good dig.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
The annoying thing for Enzo is that he is actually a really good boxer and hes just making himself look bad in the publics eyes if he fights people of low calibour. I think he is capable of taking the best at cruiserweight and i think he should take on Wilson next, that would up his ranking at the top.

Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
What is Guillermo Jones doing? or the Polish guy who's name for some reason escapes me now (the former IBF Champion whom Cunningham beat?)
Hell...I'd settle for him avenging Lee Swaby! It's much better than Sellers.
For the record, Boxing News printed on Friday that Sellers was out of the fight. Can't remember who they said was his likely replacement...but I'll find out later when I get home and tell y'all.

that polish chap won at the weekend, in a first round ko i think. as for Jones hes fighting at heavyweight now i think. He knocked out Jeremy Bates at heavyweight not that long ago.

Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
It seems Enzo aint gonna be on the card...this is late in the game for a replacement...or atleast a worthy one. ;)

Hmm, wasnt Sellers supposed be in the top 15? Or is this actually why the fight might not happen?

The basic fact is that as long as Enzo Maccarinelli is fighting on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe's fights he will not be getting the big name opponents that I want him to get, but with Calzaghe soon to retire in three or four fights, that's when I think Maccarinelli will come into his own and get out of the Calzaghe shadow.
The fact is that, as with the Braithewaite fight, when Maccarinelli gets the names he won't be on the undercard of a Calzaghe fight, so for now this is a keep busy fight. Not ideal, not what we want, but as he's more active than Calzaghe, the next one has to be a name.

Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
I remembered it after searching on Boxrec...
Boxing News Magazine reported that Rob Calloway (67-7-1) is likely the man to take Sellers place.

He lost to Audley Harrison!?!!?! Granted he might have had an off night, but if Audley can KO him in 4, I'm not convinced he's any better than Sellers, but then again Frank does seem to be in the business of giving old dudes one last shot at the title in organising this fight... I suppose he's better than Bobby Gunn though, so it'll do if that's the best available at short notice.

I don't know about that. Like you said...he lost to Harrison...a future World Champion in 2008! ;D
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Apparently Calloway was offered the fight but turned it down citing not enough money.
Audley smashed his jaw to bits, Enzo would have sent him to kip. Can't blame Enzo if guys don't want to face him.
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Why the hell is O'Neil Bell only number 9 and sure Braithwaite is better than glass chin Gurov.

Look at Fenster making sense. I didn't recognized you there for a minute. I'm actually agreeing with everything your saying.

When the story broke, it appeared that the WBO had sanctioned this fight, but from what I read from the BBBC now, they said that the WBO had agreed with their view of this fight.
Granted it has made Warren look like a tit, but where the f**k are you WBO?
-
Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Dont you know what WBO stands for? Warren's Boxing Organization :P

Hope this helps.

Re: Maccarinelli-Sellers apparently not going to happen
Are we any closer to getting an opponent for Maccarinelli yet? I wonder if Bobby Gunn's got that weekend off work....?
There's nothing on the Warren website....so maybe we can have Maccarinelli - Hobson 3 :p

Doubt anyone would be shocked by that.
A week to go no opponent for a "world" title fight and Rees has gone from the bill.
Looks like you'll have trouble staying awake again, Rhun. ;)
