Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Not too many punches landed in this one, but I have Whitaker winning this one by split decision, What you guys think?

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Sweet Pea in his prime = unbeatable

I'm a "Sweat Pea" fan, but the "Pretty Boy" has never lost, has more KOs, and is bigger and has a longer reach.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
A young Sweet and the Dela Hoya and the trinidad outcome would have been different. Mayweather would take an L

True - although Sweet Pea did lack power only having 17 KOs in his whole career. I like Sweat Pea and he may even be the best "defensive" fighter that I've ever seen, but I just don't see him as being more effective than Floyd Mayweather.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
sweet pea and floyd a nightmare to predict I really am not sure what a matchup

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Peak Pernell Whitattaker, as close to boxing perfection as you can get.

He is one of my favorites but just didn't pack enough of a punch. This was probably his ONLY weakness in the lightweight division.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Technical 'mare, impossible to predict how the judges would score it.. Would be hardly any punches landed either way...... :-\
-
Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
PBF would be using the footwork alot and would have to draw out Sweetpea. he doesnt have the power to hurt PBF, and in making sweetpea go on the attack PBF could use the openings created (which are small but evident nonetheless) and drop him.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
I'm sure Uncle Roger could pass on a few tips on how to hit 'sweet pea'; after all he did deck the then unbeaten Whitaker in their fight.
Lil Floyd WU12 ;)

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
I like Whittaker a lot, but I still have to stick with Pretty Boy Floyd by UD.

Good point.
He would have been unbeatable if he had power.

IMO the fact he had little power, made him the superb fighter he was. If he had power he would of been incline to trade more with his opposition, which would of been very dangerous, as he had a soft chin
-
Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Pernell had one of the greatest Chins of all time. And he had Power when he needed it.
Anyway, I think people are overlooking that Pernell was a southpaw. And Floyd has trouble with Southpaws.
Pernell would beat Lil Floyd, and would do it in style.

Oh, I forgot about Gary Jacobs' 'Shaveresque' power ;)
Whitaker had a soft chin, and when he was caught, he went down; Mayweather, Jacobs and Vazquez all showed this when Whitaker was resembling something like his prime form.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Anyone can get caught on a flash, look Aaron Pryor.

Pernell had a great chin.

Pernell had a great chin.
The difference is Pryor stood up to everything Arguello could throw at him, Whitaker hit the deck against featherfisted Gary Jacobs, not to mention the only slightly more respected Vazquez.
And I saw a near prime Chavez soak up everything the Black Mamba could throw at him, yet Mayweather decked a near prime Whitaker.
I stand by my statement, Whitaker had a soft chin.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Sweet pea woulda made a fool outta PBF.
-
Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Whitaker by decision in his prime would have pissed off Floyd. He would definitely outbox pretty boy.
-
Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
I'm to join this so late but I felt I had a contribution. No doubt "Sweet Pea" was one sweetest, purest boxers there ever was. His ability to get below offenses was phenomenal. As far as pure boxing ability and speed "Sweet Pea" never faced anybody like the "Pretty Boy" who great mix of speed and power. I think "Sweet Pea's" master defensive skills, rivalled only by the "Pretty Boy" i might add, would keep him out of trouble. I see this going to Mayweather by majority decision.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
This would be a really close fight and possibly warrant a rematch but I think Sweet Pea would have pulled off a split decision win. Wouldn't be suprised if this ended up in a triliogy.
-
Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
both are all time favorites of mine.
ill take mayweather by ud regardless of who wins the fight (pernell has been on the wrong end of a couple of the biggest robberies of all time)

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
This would make for an unbelievably great scientific and technical fight; one for the ages. Too bad we cant get a time machine together and make it happen. Mayweather is hands down the best I've seen in a long time, skillwise, strategywise and otherwise. Maybe since I saw Julio Cesar Chavez rob a young black fighter who clearly handed him his first loss in nearly a hundred bouts. Chavez was given a draw because of the fear that the thousands of hispanic people in the pro mexican arena would riot should the other man be given the decision he clearly one. Years and years later this man would fight a similar (yet much closer) fight against a young Oscar Delahoya at welterweight; another fight in which i believe the decision was erroneous. Two years ago I ran into this man at a club in Pacific Beach, San Diego, CA. I was sure to tell him that he was a legend and had beaten both Delahoya and Julio Cesar Chavez but had been robbed by the judges in both fights. That man was Pernell Whitaker. He is one of the few fighters who I believe had the speed, technique, strategy and skill to beat "Pretty Boy Floyd" in his prime. To win, Mayweather would really really have to impose his bigger size and reach against an opponent who would know just how not to allow him to do so. If Mayweather could catch him, it is possible he could stop Pernell. But he wouldnt catch him. No one in Whitaker's prime ever could. Pernell Whitaker wins by a close but unanimous decision, 7 rounds to 5.

Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whittaker was one of the best pound for pound boxers of the nineties. He was robbed of two dominant performances over Julio Cesar Chavez and Delahoya (less dominant than in the Chavez fight but I still thought Whitaker won). Both were in their prime when he fought them. As he got older he got KOed by Trinidad but in his prime, his speed, footwork and boxing skill were second to none. Whitaker is one of the few people I can see outboxing Mayweather Jr if they were to fight in Pernell's prime. An outstanding boxer if you love the scientific/tactical/technical part of the game.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
He didn't dominate ODLH by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a very close fight. I had it level after 11 and gave ODLH the last (115-114) ODLH hadn't reached his peak and Sweet P was past his, so hard to gauge who would have won prime for prime ( I suspect Whitaker) Was def robbed verses JCC tho
As for a fight with PBF - one of the hardest fights I could think to predict!! Just don't know!!

i havent seen whitaker vs oscar one in ages would have to watch it again what i remember is dela hoya was knocked down and i think whitaker has a point deducted it was very close fight which i feel pernell nicked it but it certainly wasnt domination or a robbery very close fight but i feel prime whitaker would of handled dela hoya comfortably winning decision 117-111 anyways on to mayweather vs whitaker too close to call i might give it to whitaker by split decision but too close to call really

He definitely dominated JCC. DLH didnt do enough to take Pea's welterweight title away from him in that fight i didnt think. I thought Oscar got hit a lot more than he ever had been and wasnt able to catch Whitaker clean. I gave Oscar the last round but I had Sweet Pea winning 7 rounds to 5...it was a long time ago, i would love to see the fight again...you also have to take into account that Whitaker was definitely past his prime and also (have you ever met him?) Pernell is super short. He has to be like 5'5" or 5'6". Delahoya I believe is four to five inches taller.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
Floyd has better combination punching if you are standing in his range, but Pernell does not stand in anyones range and he is an expert at controlling the pace and his southpaw stance would have made it hard. I pick Pernell to outpoint Floyd and win a UD>Pernell was a more proven guy than Floyd and had much better opposition. Pernell made Azumah Nelson look like a 2nd rate fighter.

Wrong.
Tito beat Whitaker on points.
-
Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
I would have to take Whitaker to beat Floyd like he beats everyone else. I think Delahoya gave Whitaker a tougher fight than Floyd would .The jab kept Whitakers timing disrupted, but Floyd I think would be on the bad end of a decision loss. Floyd doesn't have the quality of opposition or the finesse of Whitaker, who was defensive. Floyd is defensive, but he is almost in range of punches. Almost.. What that means is that Floyd will eventually get hit with a big punch.. And he doesn't look like a Hagler or Hearns type to come back and brawl.

Re: Pernell ''Sweat Pea'' Whitaker vs. Floyd ''Prettyboy'' Mayweather
This would be a chessmatch with Sweet Pea the winner
