Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
bring back Fifteen round fights....even though 12 rounds are safer alot of the memorable moments have been in the "Championship rounds"
Marciano KO walcott round 13
Frazier Ali 1 when frazier knocks down Ali in the 15th with id say the best left hook ive ever seen, and wraps up a hard fought decision
Billy conn deciding to slug it out with Joe loius when the title was a few rounds away.
Just a couple of an endless list.
the good old days :)

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
Got to get to work but real quick
INSTANT REPLAY and Regulated and uniformed reviews for JUDGES and OFFICIALS.Has to be consistent accoutability .Fighters are the ones who pay the price (literally) for unchecked inncompitence.lateer.
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
When fighters cant agree on a purse, they should take a 30% cut each and the winner of the fight gets the rest. I am sick of fights falling through because one fighter wants an extra 2% of the money. If a fighter won`t fight for the idea I have suggested then it would appear that they don`t want to fight or don`t believe they can win.
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
I'd kind of like to see 2 more judges added, as some of these decisions they call could be considered ridiculous. I don't know if 2 more official judges would help or make the scorecards more ridiculous. :-\

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
I would like to see rules in place where a fighter, no matter how dominant in a weight class, cannot jump up in weight for an immediate title shot on name alone. They should always earn that shot in the weight class, by working for it. That would prevent fighters from avoiding tough fights just because they can.
There are guys out there, especially in lightweight - middleweight, who simply jump ship too much. It has become sad.

So if a fighter is standing at the count of 9 but wobbling all over and looks like he got hit with a cattle prod, you still think the fight should go on? That could cause' alot of permanent damage to fighters.
And I personally don't want the bell to save a fighter, if he can't make the count, bell or not, he loses.
I wouldn't mind seeing 15 round title fights, or 15 rounders period.

I think boxing is great.

yeah absolutely, boxings a violent sport and the aim is to injure your opponent. if someone beats the count of 10 then they have proved they can continue and i would like to see the bell go and a unconscious boxer who was knocked down before the bell dragged back to his corner and able to continue at the start of the next round.

Well then in that case you could forget about boxing being televised or even legal after a few of your proposed bouts would be seen by the general public. This isn't the Colosseum in ancient Rome dude, but it's your opinion.

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
Dissolve all of the alphabet organizations, centralize the sport with one governing body - one title per weight class. Standard number of defenses per year by each champion and scheduling mandatory - really mandatory - bouts between contenders to determine who gets a shot at the title.

I agree with this and I also would like a regulated formulae for rankings. There should be some system in place which prevents guys who have done nothing being ranked too highly. Other than though,I love most of the things about the sport. ;D
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
1 - Absolutely no love making in the ring - I mean no holding, fools. So no more Akiwandes making love in the ring all night and taking millions of dollars home afterwards. ;D
2 - Higher pay for the winner - that should motivate some fighters.
3 - Judges and referees should also be judged - suspend or ban those guys who consistently make bum calls or scorings. Judges can be judged based on punch-stat results, the scorings of fellow judges, and the opinions of some respected experts, or on any other reasonable criteria.

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
Just one governing body at each weight and only TEN weight divisions. There was NEVER just eight traditional divisions. It started with TWO and grew from there. Now we have bigger guys in some countries and much smaller from others. Start completely afresh with something like the following weights (I'm sure there could be much improvement to those listed below).
Heavyweight - 100+kgs (220lbs+)
Cruiserweight - 100kgs (220lbs)
Lightheavy - 90kgs (198lbs)
Middleweight - 83kgs (182.6lbs)
Welterweight - 75kgs (158.4lbs)
Lightweight - 68kgs (149.6lbs)
Featherweight - 62kgs (136.4lbs)
Bantamweight - 57kgs (127.6lbs)
Flyweight - 53 kgs (116.6lbs)
Strawweight - 50kgs- (110lbs-)
Ten champs is easier for Joe Public to grasp.
Also promote more regional/world cup of boxing. Have the following Championships.
A - North American (USA, Canada, Caribbean)
B - Central American (Mexico to Panama)
C - South America
D - Asia & Oceania
E - Europe
Then have the Champions of each weights fight each other in a continual round robin. Within these groups have more sub categories so there is more talent constantly pushing forward.
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
It's been said already, but what boxing needs is a national commision to oversee and regulate all contests with the same standards applied to all fights. One thing I HATE to see is a fight who's like 4 - 15 who's been KO'd 13 times fighting an undefeated prospect... that bullshit really gets to me. Once you've had a certain number of KO losses, you shouldn't be allowed to fight anymore.
With a national commision you might also see the rise of a boxers association/union like you see in all other major professional sports (even the National Lacrosse League has a players union).

I agree with less weight division but a 24 pound difference between middle and welter? Heavyweight should stay a 200+ division.

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
no promotors like don king
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
A lot of the judges need to go. And better retirement plans for boxers. Too many guys who were once top contenders and champions arent taken care off enough and many end up broke. That problem is being worked on though.
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
15 rounds and also more outside say on decisions cause there is too many controversial decisions by judges that can make or break a boxers career.
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
I'm surprised that the majority of the responses here involve things that take place INSIDE the ring... do you guys really feel there's a big problem with the quality of action that takes place inside the ropes? I sure don't.
Boxing's problems are located outside the ring. If I had one wish, I would remove the multiple commissions that have belts in each weight division.
Each weight class has three or 4 "champions", and each of those champs has a different "mandatory contender," and that creates a system that makes it tough for beltholders to face each other and unify. There should be one belt per weight class.

I disagree about heavyweight. Most top heavies are 220+ nowadays - and even 250+ - so a decent fighter of 210 is at a big disadvantage.

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
Accountability for judges. Judges who make bad decisions should be banned for life. Bad decisions more than anything else are ruining the sport.
Do away with all sanctioning bodies and make the ring magazine belt the only one.
Enforce penalties for excessive holding.
More security for fights held in the Chicago area. :P

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
All of the painting and ads Off canvas's.Maybe they could use the NFL imagery system (?).Between rounds run it over the canvas for the In house fans and cameras.Just tired of seeing guys on rollerskates with slips.
If you loss a mouthpiece you go without it be it a punch or spit etc.
All Refs. wear mike for everyone to hear...(accountability)
All Judges Introduced on camera every fight,Put a face on them.
Less Intrusive Ref's,I might be in the minority hear but if theres a clinch or 1 fighter is holding and other punching or trying to punch out let the busy fighter deliever his shots If its excessive holding Deduct Points.
Limit the # of hangers on and entourage allowed in the ring before and after fights. To many rah-rah boys with big mouths these days ::**
A national Review board for ALL officials. If there is 1 Totally diverse to other 2 they go to review for there insight and explanations. Not a witch hunt but accountability a must.
INSTANT REPLAY. Think of more later.

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
I'd have a better purse system..no more of the loser getting more or no where near as much as the winner.

Yep, i definitely missed that one. A decent fighter of 210 is not at a disadvantage if he is infact a decent fighter. Less weight= more stamina and speed. At 200+, power won't be an issue either. Tyson was under 220 a large part of his career. Size and weight and not the most significant factors for power. I refer you to jameel mccline and valuev.

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
Commissions are a much bigger problems than promoters.
A promoter wants the biggest and the best fights to happen, because the better the matchup, the more people will watch, and therefore the more money can be made by the promoter.
A promoter doesn't want his fighter getting stuck fighting undeserving #1 mandatory contenders.
To a commission, a sanctioning fee is a sanctioning fee. All the commission cares about is that the fee gets paid, they don't care about making the best fights happen.

What went wrong with Warren then !!!! i wish the above was his mission unfortunately we have to watch Skelton V Williams, williams V Audley about 50 times or Enzo V TBC ;D

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
I have thought about the idea of combining all the belts to make one champion per weight division, causing more competition between fighters.
On a smaller scale, I would change the stupid decision to stop Vitali Klitschko when he vs'ed Lennox Lewis. I would make the ref and fight doctor let the fight continue and watched on as Vitali smashed Lewis!
-
Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
1 world champion per division.
I think that is why boxing is not as popular as it once was.So fucking confusing with all the so called champs.

Throw more than 50 puncehs a round! There would be no Heavyweight division.
Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, Joel Casamayor would all be Dq'd every fight!!!1

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
Well most of the bases have been covered so I'll just suggest few more off the wall suggestions.
I'd like to see more novelty fights.
For example two 130 lbers teaming up and fighting a heavyweight in a two against one matchup.
Have an Ultimate boxer 4 yearly tournament. No weight classes just a 32 man elimination tournament. Anyone can enter, fights are 12 rounds with at least 6 weeks between fights so it could last the better part of a year.
Winners go through, losers go home until we are left with the Ultimate boxing champion.
Obviously shitsters like Floyd coulnd't enter cos they'd get their butts whupped so it would remind the upstart little guys and the fans who the REAL top fighters are.
I'd also like drug testing to be made legal, along with any augmentations or cyber enhancements. Guys with bionic arms and titanium plated chins would be awesome to watch as would pumped up super hero type humans.
And I'd like to see man vs beast fights as well, no not Valuev but lions, bears and if possible cyclops.
It would be wicked if they could introduce spell casting and mortal combat style death moves.
Although technically the more of my ideas got implemented the less it would really be boxing I guess.
I suppose what I really want is super hero's vs monsters and villians.
It won't happen though HBO and the other guys just don't have the vision that I have :-\

Re: If you could change anything about boxing, what would it be?
All you guys are off..... or giving too many things to change. He said ONE, right?
The most important thing to change in boxing is............
The judges.
Seen some horrible decisions in my day.
Everything else in boxing is just perfect.

I'd love to see a boxing league. I would add to the champions that there should be a junior version of each championship belt to add a little drama between the champ and the Champ.
