My first memory of boxing was when I was 9(ish) seeing the comeback of Muhammad Ali against Larry Holmes. It was all over the mainstream news and I was rooting for him. When I found out he got beaten and humiliated I disliked Holmes for a long time.

For me, i vaguely remember the Olympics when Carruth and McCullough represented Ireland.
After that i can recall watching the Colins vs. Eubank/Benn fights on tv....
Also i can remember on my fifth birthday i received boxing gloves from my Godfather, me and my eight year old cousin lkaced up and it was dead even.
I was about 8 at a family party in a pub and the First Tyson V Bruno fight was on and I was asking my dad if he could beat Tyson. I got my first pair of gloves and one of those balls on a bendy stick that you stand on and hit later that year.
I never really got fully into boxing till I saw Naz on The Big Fight Live on ITV. That was the fight with the bodyslam lol (Soto?)
Naz was a guy i remember early aswell..
My first hero was Ali, then Hagler....The 50's middle's grabbed my attention next and before i new it i was obsessed.
Clay Vs Liston the first fight in Miami before he became Ali.

At the time, I was only a kid of six and the crowd seemed big to me and I kinda like the way Ali mouthed off. I think my father was for Liston but can not really remember now, who he was for.

It has been around in one form or another since 1958. Above is a link that gives the history of the internet.

I still love hearing a Cosell called fight
I like the way Howard Cosell called a fight. Made you feel part of the crowd.Quote:

Why get over it? I liked Howard when he called boxing matches, but did not like him as much when he did football games. Sorta felt like he was turning his back on the sport. Just was not same.
Theres stuff to teach in those fights as well, but it feels like someones stomping around in my childhood when I play those fights for too many peopleQuote:

Cosell did call boxing so well, so dramatically. That being said, my first boxing memory was watching a young Benitez give a young Leonard all he could handle. Cosell called that fight and I watch it every so often, just to hear Cosell's accolades for both fighters.
Watching the original "Friday Night Fights" with my dad in the mid 1950's.
Watching Jim Corrbat knock out John L. Sullivan. It was unbelievable. I telegraphed all my friends immediately.
My dad extolling the virtues of Bob Foster and always cheering for Jerry Quarry. I was very young, around 4 or 5.
Also...strapping on head gear for the first time....the fear in my stomach!!!!
I'm sure I had seen some fights before, but the one I remember real clearly is Tyson - Spinks.
My older brother actually went to the kitchen to get some beers for him and my dad and you all know what happend. He couldn't believe it was already over by the time he got back.
When Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfeilds ear off i remember my parents freaking out and all the cops going into the ring
My earliest memories are the Fenech v Nelson fights where Jeff was robbed in the first but destroyed in the second.
I remember Nigel Benn and Iron Barkley watching that with my Dad sort of got me hooked, but all my dads family have always been into boxing they were all big Mcguigen fans.
I wasn't even a boxing fan until 2 years ago. I watched ali-chuvalo 1 on espn classic (it was the first REAL boxing match I had ever seen in its entirety) and I thought it was unbelieveable that a human being could fight like that for 15 rounds :o.
I guess my first one, which I believe I've said on another similar thread before, is that after having a big argument with my parents about staying up late (past 10pm) when I was about 9 or 10, I sneaked into my Grandad's room and watched the Eubank v Benn fight with him, but had to hide sharpish when my dad came to tell grandad goodnight. I just remember I thought Eubank was an absolute tosser, and wanted Benn to really beat him badly.
Ali winning the title back against Foreman in late 74 (actually 33 years ago yesterday).
JCC beating 'The Black Mamba' what a glorious night that was at my uncles house.
I remember that fight ;DQuote:

Everyone was drinking 'Budweiser' ;D
Frank Bruno beating some chap called Bugner. I was at my Aunts house and they were all getting wasted downstairs. They totally forgot and only remembered when i went down to tell them Bruno had won.
Your talking a completely past his prime Joe Bugner,Bugner had been fighting pro 19 years at that pointQuote:

After growing out of that stage I grew to appreciate him and started to actually like the guy. The first fight I saw live was Larry Holmes dismantling Gerry Cooney, only to knock him out in like round 13 or 14....I was hooked after that. My first Ring magazine, I read every single article probably twice, it was Virgil Hill on the cover, at the time he was undefeated and they were matching him up against alot of the greats and how he would do. There was a pullout poster of Tommy Hearns, that sucker went up on the wall.
