Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Once again me bwoyo's it's time for another installment of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round.
This next up & coming installment of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round features what is sure to be a battle of the ages...one that will be as taxing on the fans as it will be the fighters...& quite possibley another candidate for fight of the year.
Just ten days away...next Saturday night on November 10th, 2007 former three divisional world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley (49 fights, 44 wins, 4 losses, & 37 ko's) squares off against one of boxing's fastest rising super stars & the current WBA champion Miguel Angel Cotto (30 fights with 25 ko's & no losses) live on HBO Pay-Per-View at Madison Square Garden.
As always...I like to do a little jaw jacking & get a little bit of hype built up amongst all me fellow forum goers prior to the bouts. This match up is a bit different. This bout here really needs no silly banter...nor does it need to be hyped, as most of us have been on pins & needles for the last few months at the mere mention of either fighters name concerning the outcome.
So let's just get right down to it.
The Wackster's Factors of the Fight
Factors in Mosley's favor:
Factor #1 : Size. One of the main factors of the match in Mosley's favor is that in all reality he is the more established at this weight. He's been here, there, & back again & in the end he will more than likely be the stronger & faster man on this night. In Wacko's opinion...Cotto will be fighting an up hill battle in many departments regarding Shane...size will be one of them. Factor to Mosley.
Factor #2 : Speed & Abilities. It's been noted that Mosley is one of the most graceful fighters of the last decade, that he's often a work of art within the ropes. Mosley can fight going forward or backwards. Some of his best work has emerged while being pressed. The main issue that will befuddle Cotto all night long will be Mosley's accuracy & speed. The fact that he's a speedster is really going to come into play in the late rounds. Yes, Cotto did look good against Judah, who is an accomplished speedster himself, but even though Judah was a fighting Welter...he was still the smaller man. Mosley's speed coupled with his natural size & power is going to plague Cotto all night long. Factor to Mosley.
Factor #3: Chin & Durability. While Mosley has shown a bit of vulnerability to the body...it hasn't been something many tip a hat to. Admittedly, it's hard for ole' Wacko to recall when & if Mosley has been dropped. Either way...Shane's one tuff cooky...factor to Mosley.
Factor #4: Age. As I have hammered out above...there is no doubt that Mosley relies on speed, slickness, & skillfully thrown combinations...it takes some bit of youth to manage the three. Many attribute the age difference between these two combatants as being in Cotto's favor...I gotta disagree with the scribes totally on this one...hell...I'll go on record & disagree with them on pretty much everything derogatory in regards to Shane. The question that most writers & fans are haggling over is : "Is Mosley past his age or is he coming into it?" Tuff question...right? Wrong. While many will say that Shane is getting old & this is just the right time for Cotto to catch the veteran...I will firmly disagree. Shane has fought & handled some pretty tuff customers in the last few years in Oscar, Vargas, Wright, Estrada, & most recently Collazo. Mosley went toe to toe with those few & more & never showed signs of aging. While Cotto is the youngest & strongest of that bunch...he's not the most experienced...which brings me to the last factor...quite simply...experience.
Factor #5: Experience. Hands down...this goes to Shane. As mentioned in the above name drop, Cotto has only a fraction of experienced when paired with names like Oscar, Vargas, & Wright. Cotto hasn't gone the distance with talent like that & those men can pull more cats out of hats than anyone on Cotto's record. Again...I lean towards Shane on this one. Factor to Mosley.
Factors in Cotto's favor:
Factor #1: Size. Most feel that Cotto has an advantage due to the fact that he is young, strong, & fast...& I will conceded that he's young...but not stronger & surely not faster than Shane. Cotto is generally a trencher...an in-fighter. Cotto likes to get in close, use his size & pressure & bust a fighter up on the inside (body) & then take out the head...he'll have some serious issues doing this with Mosley. Mosley has a longer reach, faster feet, & he's also two inches taller than Cotto. Physical advantages such as these & Mosley's speed will make a difference on fight night. Factor to Mosley.
Factor #2: Power . This is a tuff one for me. Cotto is strong...he's a devastating power puncher when the body shots reign in...but is he actually more powerful than Mosley? Not overall...atleast I don't think. Ah hell...I just don't know for sure...but I'm going to lean towards Cotto on body shots alone. Factor to Cotto...maybe.
Factor #3: Speed & Abilities. As I said before...I don't think that Cotto is as accomplished or nearly as fast as Mosley. While Cotto has had success against speedsters...he's really fought only two or three...Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana, and Paul Malignaggi...& those pale in comparison to Sugar Shane Mosley. Honestly I feel that if Cotto is going to have any shot against Mosley...he'll have to keep him on the back foot & stay on his ribs. I want to believe...no...I want to HOPE that Cotto can gain some type of momentum against Mosley...but I just feel that this is waaaaaaay to daunting of a task for young Cotto at this stage in his career. Factor to Mosley.
Factor #4: Chin & Durability. As a Cotto fan...one has to take note that Miguel has been in some serious nail biters. He's shown vulnerability at times when he never should have. Cotto often likes to scrap & go toe to toe...leaving himself exposed & often clocked into stumble mode. Most worrisome...the Corley & Torres bouts. Against someone of Mosley's caliber & power...this is definently a factor against Cotto. Factor to Mosley.
Factor #5: Age & Experience. While Cotto is younger & fresher than Mosley...he lacks the experience & know how to handle a fighter like Shane. There are times that Cotto has shown a lack in even the fundamentals of what to do when hurt or stunned. I've noticed that Cotto used to box a lot more in the past...now he seems to get caught up in pleasing the crowd & often leaves himself open to shots that a fighter of his caliber should see coming from a mile away. If Cotto fights smart he does well...when Cotto fights for Puerto...he seems to often get rocked & caught. Maybe it's due to the fact that he's young...maybe it's the fact that he now believes the hype...whatever it is...it better not show up against Mosley because it will get him stopped. Again...as I said earlier...this is to large a task for Cotto at this stage in his career & again...I lean towards Shane on this one. Factor to Mosley.
While I have never really been a true dyed in the wool fan of Mosley's...being a fan of boxing...I have to admire his skills & abilities. They are damned near second to none.
That being said...I'm a huge fan of Cotto's. Huge. Always have been...& win, lose, or draw...I always will be. In stating that...it might shock you to know that I'm picking Mosley to win this bout...maybe even shut Cotto out...but hopefully not down. I can't pull this RBR shift & be biased...or I can...but that just wouldn't be fair to the Mosley fans, now would it? Also...if Cotto were to win...it'd be that much sweeter for me to wrong!!!
PREDICTION: It pains me to make a prediction like this...but here it is : Mosley by UD or possible late TKO. While I don't see this as a total master class shut out...I do think that this will be the worst night of Cotto's young career...I truly, truly hope that I am wrong. Fingers are crossed.
Alright...well...that's my grim forecast...what's your's?
I am sure that many will disagree with me on this...but that's what makes the world go 'round. I don't need my loyalty to my favorite fighter questioned...I just want to know why you think I'm wrong...hell...maybe you can even skew my viewpoint for me...but I doubt it. ;) ;D
So...once again fellow forum goers I hope you’ll join me for another bout comin’ atcha live by HBO & the costly expenses of PPV.
The weekend's here...it's that time again. Toss aside all your troubles, break out the chips & salsa, put down the remote, crack open the caps, & pour up your beverage of choice as we settle in for some couch coverage…it’s time for yet another installment of Wacko’s Drunken Round by Round.
As always I say to you all...cheers...& koneecheewah bitches...it's fight night & there's no other place I'd rather be!!!

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
guess i'll be the first to say that my boy Cotto will come out on top by KO.
Mosley is great but he's not the same Mosley as befor and that will be the ultimate key t Cotto's victory

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Really shocked about your pick....
I mean really.
People just don't get it... Cottos destined for greatness.
He ain't loosing this fight, no way. The kids got tons of heart and a mind set that would put Jean-Grey to shame.
I've seen Cotto from his beginings this kids moved along great. His career IMO has been brought along fine.
Many people said if Cotto could beat Zab then he'd show he belonged.
Cotto beat Zab and yet still question the kid. (Not saying you Wacks)
Hes come off the canvas to win fights, hes fought thru cuts, hes fought southpaw, hes fought orthodox.
After he beats SSM something tells me people STILL wont believe hes the truth.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
agree 110 % Mick
i guess what people see is that Miguel doesn't look great at 1 particular thing he does in any particular fight i guess you can say but he does look good overall at everything . >:mad i think i confused myself but hopefully you know what i mean. Anyways like i said befor Cotto will win. He has to win!

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Again, i'm ok with either guy winning it. Mosely could really cement his legacy here...Mayb a Cotto win would be the better for Boxing as he is young and will certainly be around a lot longer into the future than Mosely. (However this is the same situation with Calzaghe Kessler and i'm going for Joe in that) so i can't bring myself to pick either guy here.
I'm thrilled with this fight and of all the big fights, the chemistry here may provide FoTy as Cotto will refuse to be boxed and Mosely will refuse to be bullied.

Just don't agree. Sorry babe...I think it's too early for this test. Let him win...I'll be more than proud...but I actually really don't want to even watch the fight. The suspense & anticipation kills me.

I've followed Cotto from day one also...but everyone has there limitations.

Agreed...it's not like I'm saying Cotto's garbage...I'm a huge fan...but Mosley's no cake walk & Cotto's never faced anyone like him. I question every fighter that I favor...Floyd, Hopkins, Wright, Sturm, Pavlik, & believe me...Cotto's no different.

They'd be idiots then.
Mosley is a true test & outside of Floyd...I don't know who I truely feel is a shut out type of opponent.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
CC, for the write up as usual Wacks.
Another extremely enticing bout. Cotto is an admirable fighter. He fights whoever is out there to fight and keeps on overwhelming them.
I think Mosley is too good though and this is where we see the first blip on Cotto's record.
Mosley is smart, experienced and has fought at this weight and higher a long time and has the speed advantage.
Mosley by decision.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
I agree with most stated in the post..like others i'd actually probably rather see cotto win, but i'm pickin shane by tko. Either way i'll be happy, i like both guys.

:coolclick: s to CuteMick & mike both for your thoughts.
I agree...that Cotto has to win...I just don't think that he can against Mosley.
As far as Cotto not looking great at one thing...I disagree...I think that Cotto is a hell of an overall fighter. He's amazing to watch as he breaks down a fighter...it's almost like he's chopping down a tree...he starts at the bottom & works his way up...I just think that he aint carryin a big enough axe for Mosley.

I agree...Mosley's got too much experience & he's too fast...but in the end...I pray that wer'e both wrong. ;D

CC returned thanks Wacko,
Really lookin forward to this!
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
I agree with that too - hope Cotto, think Mosley, either way I like both guys.
I think Mosley will have Cotto in trouble at some point but whereas Cotto has been let off the hook against lesser fighters Mosley will polish him off.

I want this one to be over. :frusty:

Wack, i no exactly, every time my man Hatton fights im in a cold sweat....
I was nearly Hyper ventilating before the Tszyu fight and in the mAGEE and Collazo fights i was between vomitting and crying!
Still it's great top have one favourite active boxer (unless thats Zab!)

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
I've been picking Mosley the whole time, but I really just don't know. I think Mosley skill and experience wise is in much better shape in this fight. I don't think he's old, but I tell you Cotto could sure make this guy old in this fight, and Cotto will be up for this fight more than any other in his career, so this definately won't be a sleeper fight. Mosley will have to hurt this guy alot and finish him, cause Cotto will keep coming all night. I'll stick with my prediction and go with Mosley by k.o. in the upper rounds.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Shane may have the advantages in most areas but I still go for Miguel. He has been relentless at 147,his stamina has gone up ten fold from 140. I don't think SSM can take the pressure and I also think Miguel will see how Shane has been beaten/troubled before and use that to his advantage.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Just thought I'd share this.
World champion Miguel Cotto today weighed 151.5 pounds - far under the limit - at his seven-day safety weigh-in mandated by the World Boxing Association. Cotto weighed in before a horde of fight press during his Media Day today in Caguas, Puerto Rico..........

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
I'll be cheering for Cotto - I like him, he's a great fighter, he's humble, and he has the potential to be the future of the division; but Mosley is like no one Cotto has ever faced. Arguably the 2nd best fighter in the division, he'll be the toughest test in Miguel's career by far. With Miguel's at times leaky defense combined with his somewhat suspect chin, and SSM Mosley's speed, accuracy, and experience is all going to add up to a long night for Cotto (or maybe a short one if Mosley gets to him early). My pick is Mosley by TKO.
One thing I don't think Cotto gets enough credit for however is his smarts in the ring. He often looks like a rugged brawler, but in the Zab fight (and others) I think he showed a great deal of smarts in the ring and hopefully that will serve him well against another very intelligent fighter in SSM.

Same here; when Pavlik fought Taylor I was wound as tight as a drum. I wanted the undercard fights to last all night cause' I was so nervous. Then when Pav went down in the second I literally got sick to my stomach. It's great having a fave fighter, but it can sure make the ulcers start forming in the belly. When Hatton/Mayweather comes I'll be a raving lunatic. ;D

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
I'm backing Cotto to win personally, but I'm sure that Mosley will force him into a good workout at least if not more. Your RBR's are getting on the forum earlier and earlier Wack.....but I guess recent weeks haven't given you too much to work on really.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Its a tough fight to pick but I'm about as certain as I possibly can be that its gonna be a very good fight.
Mosley doesn't really try to outbox people, he's definitely not gonna run all night. There will be some nice exchanges. That part could worry Cotto fans cause Shane's faster and Cotto's been hurt before by being caught in the middle of an exchange. I don't think Shane's a huge puncher by any means at 147 but he's not feather fisted either.
Still I'm thinking that Cotto comes on late to win a decision. At least for now that's what I'm thinking. Should be an awesome fight, actually anticipating this one more than Floyd-Hatton.

Mayweather v Hatton is probably the bigger event but I DEFINITELY think this will be the better fight.

I feel ya. Honestly though...the only Hatton fight I thought was "sweatable" was the Collazo bout. That was a nerve wracker...but you gotta admit...Mosley...he's tippy top dawgy lawg!

I hope that your'e right about the pressure issue...but the men that pressured him had a lot more abilities than Cotto & a much tighter set of defenses.

The safety first Cotto...I'd give him a shot...that's the Cotto of the first 20 or so matches...the Cotto that wants to be Tito...I don't give him a shot in hell against Mosley...& honestly...subconsciously...I find it hard to give him a shot period.

:coolclick: I hope that Cotto reads this RBR, because there are enough believers here to give him a shot in the arm...I wish that I could be one of ya's...but I aint gonna lie...I skeered shatless for me guy.
I used to put the DRBR's on 2 weeks in advance so that everyone could hash it out prior to the bouts. You'd be surprised how many of us shifted our opinions back & forth. I'd throw my hand up as one of the guilty as charged! ;D

:coolclick: Yeah...I wanted to see this one pretty badly until the outcome started coming into me brain & that it could be in Mosley's favor.

CC back Wack. To quote you and Gamo: "Mayweather v Hatton is probably the bigger event but I DEFINITELY think this will be the better fight."
"Agreed here...but I aint so sure that I think this fight will out shine Hatton Mayweather."
Depends on what you call a fight, because I agree with Gamo about Cotto/Mosley being a better all around fight, whereas I see Mayweather/Hatton being a borderline mugging without the felony charges, with Ricky being the victim. That's why I'm so nervous cause' I'll be happy if Rick makes it 12 rounds.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Gotta go with Cotto in this one by late KO. Shanes getting on a bit and will probibly slow up a little down the streach if Cotto sets a high tempo early on. Body shots are the key for Cotto and keeping his chin well protected. Should be a great fight but in my oppinion the Mayweather fight will be a better fight as i favour technical boxing over explosive wars.

:coolclick: I keep sounding like a broken record on this note...but I hope all these people ridin' Cotto's jock are right!!! Unfortunately...I won't be swayed. I think Mosley's gonna be too much for me guy.

:coolclick: back mate takes a true boxing fan to pick agianst one of your favourate fighters. I just cant see Cotto getting beat he cuts the ring off well and hes got so much determination i picked Judah to beat him but i totaly under estimated Cotto not gonna make the same mistake again. Just really hope Cotto keeps his chin covered up cause Mosley ll capitalise where other fighters have let Cotto off the hook.

Here's the thing with me & Cotto...I am a dyed in the wool fan & proud of it...but I think that his crux in regards to an opposing fighter falls into the categories of speed & technical abilities. When you take into effect that Mosley is probably going to be the stronger man...well...you are going to cause Cotto large amounts of trouble.
For the record I was leaning towards Judah to smoke Cotto...& look wherer that got me. Heh heh heh.
I hope that I'm just as right about my last pick as I will be this one. ;) :D

CC Wacko....agreed 100%
altho i really like both guys so it's a fight i can sit back, chill out and enjoy. I'm probably more excited about this one than that calzaghe- kessler fight tonight.....probably (we'll see at about 1am).
If Cotto wins he becomes a huge star....just think that Shane could have a bit too much speed and savvy for him.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
:coolclick: Waco! This is the match up of the year!! :)
I really want to see Mosley do a number on Cotto. Not out of any disdain for Cotto. No, for me its about wanting to see Mosley give another prime performance, at 36, in a division that i would of preffered to see him stay 5 years ago.
For me, a win like this will do well to promote Mosley as one of the great WW's (rather than just a great Lightweight)
What is it now? 1 week away...! Cant-freakin-WAIT ;D

:coolclick: Agreed. This very well could be the match up of the year.
It's now 8 loooooooooooong days away from the moment of truth & either the abrupt halt or jump start of Cotto's young career.
Damn...could you imagine him beating the piss outta Mosley? I mean...think about what that would do for him. I got my fingers crossed.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
This will be a war, I hope Cotto wins. Mosley is weak to the body, and Cotto has that wicked hook to the body. And on the other hand Cotto tends to get hurt when he is hit flushed and this will be something that Mosley will accomplish. But I think Cotto will break down Mosley with aggression.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
Shane Mosley is certainly a better fighter than Zab Judah. However, I don't think the gap between a 36 year old Mosley and a 29 year old Judah is nearly as big as some people make it out to be.
In fact, I think Mosley and Judah share some of the same flaws. Both Shane and Zab were blessed with great handspeed, footspeed, and overall athleticism. However, both fighters spend too much time standing flatfooted in front of their opponents, trying to take advantage of their handspeed while neglecting their footspeed and athleticism.
Floyd Mayweather takes a lot of criticism for his style, but if Mosley and Judah fought more like Mayweather, they would be much better fighters. And this lack of movement is going to cost Mosley in this fight.
Mosley is going to stand in front of Cotto, and while I'm sure Mosley will land some hard clean shots, he's also going to be in Cotto's punching range. And if you're in Cotto's range, you're going to get hit, because he never stops punching. And Cotto's high punch output isn't just about throwing punches that score, he throws all his punches with the intent to hurt you.
I think Mosley will have some great moments early in the fight (just as Judah did), Mosley will probably rock Cotto on a few occasions. But over the 12 rounds, Cotto's body attack and relentless pressure will gradually wear down the much older Mosley. Shane has a great chin, so I can't see Miguel KO'ing him on a head punch. But I think Cotto's body attack could result in a late round TKO.
I think this Saturday night is when Miguel Cotto officially becomes a star.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Cotto vs Mosley
I agree with some of the Judah Shane analogies although Shane is obviously the better fighter. I also think Cotto will win but via points. It'll be tough and Shane will do well early on but Cotto gets better as the fight goes on. His output has been stunning at 147 and he has murderous intent with each punch, there is not pitty pattying here!
It should be an awesome fight,I don't see how it can't be!

I think Cotto will be the first to stop him. I'll be there in person, and I'll be for Cotto all the way.
