Respect for Mikkel Kessler
First off, I'd like to say that I picked Joey C to win tonight and was behind him all the way.
Secondly, I think it important to give Mikkel a mention, because tonight he looked the part as a world class boxer. He will no doubt produce some great fights in the future and will be back. He was also a true gentlemen in the interview afterwards, admitted defeat but still had a smile on his face. Good to see he's not a sore loser.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Definitely - Kessler won a lot of friends here in Australia for how he handled himself in beating Mundine. The guy has balls of steel - to fight Mundine in Australia and to fight Calzaghe in Wales shows how tough he is.
Thought he fought very well tonight against what is the best super middleweight of all time - he certainly was not disgraced. Joe's speed shone through in the end, but Kessler was still good enough to catch Joe with some great shots.
Great fight, fitting result and respect to both guys tonight.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Yep, agree. Respect to him.
He's got a lot of good boxing in him, and definitely a future. Unless he keeps fighting Joe.
He was seriously outclassed, even though he remained dangerous to the end.
He'll do fine against most anybody, but not Joe.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
I don't think Mikkel Kessler could lose to a lesser fighter than Calzaghe.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
kessler has made me a fan. much respect to him.
still the future of the division once calzaghe departures
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
I would like to see Kessler vs Froch next.
Or maybe kessler vs a rejuvinated Lacy providing he makes a decent comeback.'
Kessler was great tonight....i'm a fan now
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Losing to Calzaghe is not a terrible thing...being competitive against him is something else...& while Kessler was competitive in spurts...it was enough to be considered a worthy opponent.
I have always respected Kessler & the fact that he was able to stay on his feet for the duration...after that beating...I respect him more.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Kessler is good for the sport and he'll be busy next year. I want him and Miranda to go to war.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
He was really good, god bless him. He's greatly enhanced Joe's legend.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
I think this will be the only defeat in Kessler's next 20 fights. He did as good as he could and would have dominated anybody less than Joe's calibre.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
I had alot of respect for kessler going itno that and it hasn't changed either. He tried is damn best and give everythign you would expect from a champion, my hat goe soff to him.
again i would liek ot mention the danish fans, they had a greag great showing there, and tried their best to cheer their guy on - and whn it was over they turned around to us and congradulated us and shook hands with the people in my row - great fans and a great champion. If joe does move up i would expect kessler to hold more than one belt in as little as 2 years.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Being a calzaghe fan after tonight I am also a kessler fan. He was better than expected and kept me on the edge of my seat for many rounds ofcourse part of it was Joe being reckless but Kessler is the future after Joe leaves & he would have beaten any of the top fighter tonight whether it is taylor, pavlik or miranda but Joe is a very special fighter right up there with roy jones & hopkins.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Despite the loss he's still the best Super Middleweight out there if Calzaghe does move up a weight. He can have that division locked down for a fair few years to come.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
kessler gets my respect as well. but one thing i would suggest is that he gets a better trainer that will light a fire under him. his corner was so quiet that nobody was urging him to do better. maybe its a by product of growing up in a country where violence is at its lowest.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Nothing but class he showed. He acted as if he had not lost those two precious belts. He should have known better than to fight Calzaghe but I guess he must have been listening to Royal and believed what Royal was saying about him and also about Kalzaghe. Boy was Royal wrong. lol

his corner was urging him on in the 9th and kessler made a rally for the fist half of the round but calzaghe still came back in the second half of the round to win the round...
kessler's corner continously yelled for him to throw the straight right and upper cut, over and over....
easier said than done against Joe
kessler's corner's only mistake was not bringing something to bring down the swelling on kessler's eye, that was strange in a title fight this big...
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Ive yet to watch the fight on telly so i couldnt Ssee swelling or anything like that...but what i did see from my seats was Kessler a world champ, knowing he was down on points swing like noone ive ever seen looking for the KO.
Great great guy and ill tell you everyone in the stadium knew he gave his best and he had the crowds respect after the fight..
He shut us up a few times during aswell lol.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Total respect to Kessler. He looked so dejected in between rounds but when he came out for the bell,he fought like a warrior. Went for the KO when his corner told him to and I thought he even won the 12th round. A great fighter, who should go on to dominate the other fighters in the division.
-
Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Kessler showed a lot in defeat. This is one of those fights where both fighters leave the ring with enhanced reputations.
We have not heard the last from Kessler. He will be in another major fight sooner rather than later.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
great performance by kessler. i actually had him ahead after the first 6 rounds. joe was getting caught with that right hand and fast right uppercut. kessler will come again no doubt. it was a great fight for boxing

Yup, pretty much what I was going to say, and I agree I thought that he won the last round. Kessler showed plenty of heart and determination, and his reputation for having a granite chin remains intact, and I have no doubt he'll regain one or two of the belts which he lost last night. Brave and likable, certainly the future of the division, and I'd like to see him in against Froch in his next outing for one of the belts that Joe will almost inevitably vacate.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
He's made me a fan he gave his all last night,he deserves alot of respect for going to wales and putting on a fight like that and taking the lose very well! Hes the future of the SMW i recon.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
He does come across well. Good fighter and a top bloke. Pretty much impossible to dislike him.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
I must admit that I had a bit of a downer of Mikkel Kessler prior to this fight. Undoubtedly, that had a lot to do with some of his fans on this forum - who were very jingoistic and one-eyed, up to the point that I was beginning to wonder if there was something unpleasant about Kessler himself, as he was attracting some seriously racist fans.
However, I was wrong - during the build up to the fight, he was a gentleman and a true pro. He was competitive throughout the fight (against the guy who I belive top be the best fighter to come out of Britain since Jimmy Wilde). He showed heart, courage and real power at all times .... some of the shots he cought Calzaghe with would have laid out just about any other super-middle in the world.
After the fight, he had no complaints - he didn't blame the ref or the judges, he didn;t blame a hand injury, he admitted that the body shot had him in trouble.
A classy guy, a true talent and he has made a fan out of me.

Cc mate agree with everything there.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
If he wants to prove he is still the man to beat at 168 he needs to fight either Bute or Froch.
Froch will have his shot at the wbc title when he beats Reid.He must have the fight in spring, i think Kessler should fight him then.

Froch has not beaten a top 30 guy. Kessler will destroy him early.

Sorry Tam, but I believe that eagle is right on this one, and that Kessler would beat Froch should they meet for a title vacated by Joe Calzaghe.

Kessler-Bute would be interesting. But Kessler-Froch would be a mis-match. Froch hasn't done anything or beaten anybody to be considered a good fighter. He's a mediocre fighter who happens to be undefeated cuz of poor competition faced.

Re: Respect for Mikkel Kessler
Mad respect to Kessler for his actions before, during, and after the fight. I wasn't a huge fan of Kessler before this fight and I considered JC one of the most overrated fighters in boxing - but I've certainly changed my mind and can now admit the wrongness of my position. Both are great fighters.
Like others have said, I think the Kessler that showed up last night would've beaten pretty much any SM other than Calzaghe.
I really, really want to see Kessler - Bute now. I'd give the advantage to Kessler, but that would be a hell of a competitive fight. Bute might still be a bit green for a fighter of Kessler's skill.
JC is P4P top 5 and put on a hell of a performance last night.
