Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
"It was one of my hardest fights, definitely, and at the end I was tired," Calzaghe (44-0, 32 KOs) said of what was arguably the most meaningful fight in the 23-year history of the division. "I think I threw a thousand punches and he caught me with some good shots in the fight, stunned me a few times. So I knew he was going to come out for the knockout (in the 12th round). Maybe I should've run, held on a bit more and just danced away. But I stood toe-to-toe and I felt that the crowd got their money's worth tonight. We're both warriors and I think we fought a good fight."
"I've never been one for rematches," Calzaghe said. "(Kessler is) only going to get stronger."
Naturally, Kessler seeks a rematch, though he probably knows better than to expect Calzaghe to grant him one now that one of Wales' national heroes has accomplished all he can at 168 pounds. Kessler will remain at super middleweight, but he has no idea who he'll fight next.
"I haven't thought about that yet," Kessler (39-1, 29 KOs) said. "He just crushed my dreams."

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
As overly dramatic as this will sound...this one was one for the ages.
The fans...the TRUE FANS...asked for it...the fighters gave it...tenfold...& we GOT IT!!!
I mean, some of us...we really got it.
I feel for Kess...but Joe aint gonna give him a rematch. He'll move up to 175lbs or bust.

Wackito,
If Joe was 5 years younger a rematch may make sense.
If Kessler had won a close battle a rematch may make sense.
But the veteran won and so deserves the next big event. Whether thats Hopkins or whomever, we shall see.
You take care, y'all... ;)

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
He only temporarily crushed your dreams kess. You'll bounce back.

I think this fight was probably the highest skill level the supermiddle division has ever seen...
I can't wait till Joe becomes two weight champ, but i think he should keep his titles if he fights hopkins and defend them against pavlik...
Then calzaghe would probably retire with wins over hopkins and pavlik/taylor winner...

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
By the sounds of it Kess isn't taking this too well.
I hope this doesn't shut him down, hes better then that. Kess needs to go to the drawing board, train and look for the next fight.
Kess def has what it takes to become champ again.
As for Joe he needs to get that paper and Hopkins will bring him that. Joe wants the acceptance of the US for some reason I hope he knows that he doesn't need it hes earned it already.

Kess is young & built his whole life on this dream...I can only imagine...plus...he's never NEVER faced such adversity...before, during, & after...it's gotta be heartbreaking & devastating.

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Ill give calzaghe respect for his win but im have to say this....calzaghe has one hell of an ugly style and for god sake can someone teach him to punch. Ive never seen so much slapping in my life, i respect him and i congratulate him but i have to say that the fight was close and i just hope the judges did not score some of those punches. Congrats to calzaghe and hope to see him fight in some more big fights. :)

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Calzaghe was very sloppy at times in this fight. He is usually very accurate. Must have been kess's movements that kept joe from being more accurate.

Well i havent seen massive amounts of calzaghe but from what ive seen, hes always like this. I saw calzaghe have kessler on the ropes and do some pity pat punches like he was doing tai bo or something. I will say now, this feat is a great achievement but technically calzaghe is lacking. I think a slick boxer might give him a very big run for his money, roy jones could still probably cause alot of problems for him. Mundine, well from what ive seen calzaghe is very awkward...mundine showed that an awkward soliman was no problem for him. Soliman is not in the same class as calzaghe but they do have similarites, both throw thousands of punches that dont always have power on them. I think if mundine fought calzaghe it would be close. If mundine got soliman as a sparring partner then i see it being very close. Kess showed joe is suspectable to a right uppercut and straight rights. I just think with mundines speed, he would be able to land these punches effectively. Im not saying mundine would win but many people do not give him credit for his talents. He has improved and i think he can be a major player in the division if his eye is near 100 percent.

No, i give him credit for his accomplishments but really he is technically not a skilled fighter. He has good hand speed, alright power occasionally and some good head movement but his technique lacks quite a bit. Im just saying mundine should be given credit for his skill, im not talking about accomplishments. Calzaghe has done great things and i give him full credit for them.

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Mr Kessler Learned more last night about fighting than ever before, and didnt get hurt. He will get better from lessons learned, should come back a better fighter I was impressed. Technicaly a better fighter than Joe but not as inventive.

Exactly mate, calzaghe adjusted. Although calzaghe was throwing some useless punches, they werent wasting energy and it was enough to keep kessler weary and keep some gas in the tank. Calzaghe is crafty but for me not a technically efficient fighter.

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
I hope Kessler does come back with his mind in tact. He seemed absolutely gutted he lost and even said he did not think he performed well.
Calzaghe won the fight for me with his jab and movement. He was too quick. I think if Kessler can learn to negate some of that speed then i think he will be even better. However, I expect that if Calzaghe does move up then Kessler will have one of his belts back very soon.
Kessler v Froch anyone?

That's one of the things I like best about boxing - there's a lot more to it than technique. Joe got inside Kessler's head in that fight, confused him with movement and took him out of his game. Joe does look wild at times, but that's just his technique. If a fighter can be that successful with a style that is technically flawed, maybe we should re-examine the definition of good technique. People say similar things about Pacquiao, and it's true - neither of these guys are textbook. But that doesn't diminish the skill they possess - it's just a different skill set than the "textbook" fighter.

no doubt, if it was any other fighter i would of been routingfor kessler i think, stand up guy who was not just fighitng for him self, he had an entire nation on his back, the danes idiolise the guy - around 20k made the trip and cheered him on well, no doubt he could hear that at times.
He will come back tho, he didnt take a beating, he raised his own profile after that IMO

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Calzaghe is effective in his awkwardness. Joe will be hard for anyone to crack, also being gifted with a good chin, never hurts.. I thought it to be a solid performance by both men,, they did themselves and the sport proud.
-
Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
I actually came out of it liking Kessler more, hopefully he just takes it and moves on, he could take over 168 after Joe leaves. Although who knows how long it will be before he moves up too.

how can you say he isn't technically efficient when he fought pretty much the perfect fight.
-
Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Yeah, a rematch is senseless. Kessler would have to get a lucky KO to win it. It's now obvious to me (and many before the fight) that Calzaghe would out box Kessler again and again.
Hopkins will get humiliated if he faces Calzaghe. I'm going off the Wright bout of course. Hopkins looked like an antique.
I imagine Bika will get a shot at Kessler sooner than later after his appearance on The Contender.

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
His punch technique ono leaves a lot to be desired. But his confidence and ring generalship makes up for it, Joes had bad hands for years. Hes got a wonderfull sense of distance always did have as an Amatuer, He was the one you knew would make it as a Pro. Plus him and his Dad are a great team. What Enzos done is not try and mend something that isnt broken, sign of a good coach.
-
Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
good point scrap. seen a several fighters knocked of track from that very thing " trying to fix what is not broken"
-
Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Agreed, Scrap - people have always derided Joe's technique, but they did that about Cassius Clay as well.
He really does have the gift of distance. His balance is wierd as well - he looks clumsy at times, but he is always perfectly positioned to slip and counter - I think kids could learn just by watching his footwork, which is truly exemplary.
Joe's special thing is his absolute stone cold professionalism - he is a winner and he knows when to raise his game and let it all hang out. Fighters can only go to the well so often in a career, and his longivety is due to his knowing exactly at what level he needs to fight (that's why people knock him, he fights to his opponents level and makes sure that he gets what he is there for ... a win)

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Yeah he for sure did,and broke your heart in taking the shots he did then coming back with more, but Kess did him self and the sport proud...and he can certainly learn from this and be an even better fighter/boxer than before ......if he wants it enough...Hats off to both guys...brilliant... :badass:

Wow. You can't please 'em all. Youv'e never seen so much slapping in your life? Those were power punches that busted Kessler's face up worse than anyone he has ever faced...including Mundine.
The fight sure as shit wasn't close...watch it again. Calzaghe pretty much shut him down on all fronts after the 4th or 5th round.

"Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream" -- Kessler
The more I see this the funnier it becomes. I just find it to be a very humerous statement. Something that you might hear Krusty the Clown say on a classic Simpsons episode...

:coolclick: ono. I can't understand anyone saying that Calzaghe's not a technical fighter. He is. He's also savy, awkward, & has an incredible jab that sets up some relentless combinations.
I'm just curious what it takes to be considered technical...

LOL Crushed my dream...
Honestly...I feel for Kessler...I really do.
Think of it like this...boxing is pretty much Kessler's life as much as it is Joe's. Kessler had two of the belts & was well on his way to getting another one & then got shut down like a crack house on Sunday morning.
I really really liked Kessler & had he been fighting someone else besides Joe I'd have been pulling for him.
Kessler is a great fighter & fought a great fight...but it was against a greater fighter.
If Joe keeps on winning...which I believe he will & then retires...he'll still be questioned...& I find that ridiculous...but the proof is in the poundings...& Joe keeps pounding out wins.

some people don't understand that the best style is having no real style at all... if you don't have a style, how can you beat it?
Calzaghe find unreal angles to punch from, takes punches for the fuck of it and counters with a load more... he can be technical if he wants, get behind the jab slip jabs and counter - but he gets crazy coz it puts fear in him and keeps him sharp, simple as.
-
Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
I was so impressed by Calzaghe's win, that I moved him to the #1 position of my own personal P4P list.
Unless he gets old overnight, which is possible at his age. I cannot picture anyone currently at Super Middle or Light Heavyweight beating him. Sure he arm punches quite often, but he even makes those work for him. He has that type of style that can make anyone or everyone look bad.
I think it would have taken a prime RJJ to beat him. His Awkwardness, Speed, Balance, Defense, Footwork, and total punching arsenal is truly a gift. He may not be a big puncher, but he does not have to be.

I'm trying to recall if I have every seen anyone that throws from all angles like Joe does...other than Hopkins...I don't know of anyone...but Hopkins fires out of defensive spots...Calzaghe fires out of any angle or opening period.
The volume is incredible...it always has been...but lately...it's been more precise...& that's where I can't understand someone calling him sloppy. Awkward, yes...sloppy...I just don't see it.

no style at all, he starts off more clever now with his jab and thinking, but as the fight goes on the more calzaghe changes.
During the build up to this kessler was saying like alot of others they had studied joe and worked out how ot beat him, to me kessler looked for that uppercut, he believed that was key early on... when i seen them land i was certain thats one of the things they had worked on... but lil enzo said something damn true, just like every other fighter who thought they had calzaghe figured out, he changes what hes doing and it fucks them up.
IM not saying the guy is god, RJJ, hopkins would be much tougher tests, both very smart nd gifted, then can switch things about to...
but thats what i mean about his style, he switches his style of fighting around so much that t stops anyone hes faced getting any real momentium with some success they found ala kessler with the uppercuts

I've thought that Calzaghe should be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up on the P4P lists due to the fact that he's undefeated & keeps on winning...even being a Yank, I've felt that way...& that aint a popular view in the U.S. ;D
I think Joe should get merits due to his dominance & once he moves up to 175 & beats either Johnson, Jones, Woods, Hopkins, Tarver, or Dawson...I'm curiuos to see what people will say then...because even with the Kessler win...there are still critics.
As good of a guy as Joe is...as great as he is for boxing...people still don't like him...but it is what it is.

Yeah...a prime Jones would have gone toe to toe...but it wouldn't have been the shut out that everyone thinks. Everyone rips Joe's record of opponents...but Jones fought a shitload of no hopers too. Let Roy put his hands behind his back & stick his neck out like he did against some of those chumps with Joe...totally different story.
Don't get me wrong...I loved Roy & I still consider him one of my FOAT fighters...but a lot of Jones "SuperMan" aurra came from some carefully orchestrated matches.

Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
More Kessler stuff from Denmark. He said that his hand did not bother him in the fight, but he said he lost his breath in the 6 round. He knew he had to hurt Calzaghe and he maybe had put to much power in his shots, but he is still puzzled that he didn't have the stamina. And the Bodyshot from "Slapper" really hurt him.
He has great respect for Calzaghe, so he is not crushed but will take a break for a couple of month, then look for a new fight.
He also said he wouldn't have given Calzaghe a rematch either ::**, and yes Calzaghe really taught my guy a lesson.
Hope to see Kessler in big matches in 2008 ;D.
-
Re: Mikkel Kessler "Joe Calzaghe Crushed My Dream"
Extremely impressed with both fighters. Speaking of styles. JC's strength is his stamina. When Kessler was moving forward he was winning. The thing was that JC kept up such a fast pace that Kessler couldn't keep backing him up. Just great fitness level. As far as the matchup it was pretty even. JC just outworked him and set that blazing pace that Kessler couldn't consistently overcome. Occasionally he would turn it up and get ahead in the round, then he would get tired and JC would overtake him with his steady work rate.
Both guys had a great performance, just Joe's was better. I like BHop but I don't think he's active enough to beat JC right now. In the JT fights Bhop was throwing like 10punches a round. Don't see Joe beating him up and landing alot of clean punches, but he will win the decision on activity alone unless Bhop drastically changes his fight plan.
Great year for boxing and a great night with class act performances and nothing negative about either guy.
