A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Pound for Pound the best chins in boxing:
1) Marvin Hagler.
To stand and trade with Hearns was viewed as Boxing suicide, he survived and came through!
Also, his win over Mugabi and the fact he was nevr legitiamtely knocked down.
2) Jake LaMotta
Never down, in a career that contained fights with SRR, Marcel Cerdan and a guy called o'neill bell!!!
3) James Toney
I really don't like Toney, but any guy who starts at around 11st and can take punches from heavies makes my list!
4) Bernard Hopkins:
Justification really isn't needed by me, his fights speak for themselves, rarely knocked down.
5) Wayne McCullough:
For many he should be higher on the list, but the other hopped more weights, still Wayne could stop traffic with that skull.
6) Muhammad Ali:
He was down, but i found that was mainly due to balance/fatigue. The Greatest took phenomenal punishment in the latter half of his career and was never stopped nor retired of his own free will.
7) Julio Caesar Chavez
In his division it's common to see guys hit the deck a lot, but Julio blatantly refused to go down on many occasions.
8) Joe Frazier:
With the exception of the Foreman fights, it seemed like you had to shoot joe in order to stagger him, he literally had to be lifted off his feet to be put down!!!
9) Harry Greb.
A warrior king in an age of warriors, from what iv seen and researched of this guy he was pretty hard to hurt!
10) Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Although a defensive fighter he's been tagged by some of the best in the game and he remained unfazed, great chin.
Honorable mentions,
Evander Holyfield.
Gerald McClellan: took Julian Jacksons bombs!

Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
In his entire career, amateur & professional, Mikkel Kessler has never ever been knocked down. Surely he gets at least an honourable mention for that.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
I was actually going to slot Mikkel in, but i thought people might accuse me of being a Johnny come lately and only selecting recent fighters :-[

He hasn't foughten any real punchers...
I think Tua obviously deserves a mention, and Foreman.

Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Kessler has an obvious solid chin but only had 40 odd amatuer fights to go with his 40 pro.
Joan Guzman has never been floored in the pros and won 300 odd amateur fights only losing a handful.

Yeah, 40 odd, so it has to be put into perspective.
Calzaghe has been floored twice in about 180 fights ams-pros. That's 100 more chance's to get chinned than Kessler.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Juan La Porte
Kid Gavilan
Sugar Ray Robinson
Marvin Hagler
Jake Lamotta
Julio Cesar Chavez
All deserve a mention.

Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Chavez should be higher imo. Didn't George Chuvalo have a great chin too?

Yes he took Foreman's best shots and didn't go down he was TKO but was never dropped a hell of a chin he had.
and also Panama Al Brown deserves a mention aswell.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Chuvalo definately should be up there at number 1
For today's standards aside from that shock knockdown in his
last fight against Mack, Librado Andrade has shown a hell of a chin.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
I love Floyd but there's no way that he should be on that list. Floyd's defensive ability and speed allows him to never take the full brunt of a blow. He's been caught a couple times but nothing major. I think ODLH should take his spot. ODLH has taken big shots and I've never seen him hurt.

Kessler hasn't really fought a one punch knockout specialist and had to take punishment.
If anyone should be up there for an underrated chin it would be Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard also Pernell Whitaker Tua and Sugar Ray Robinson all had better chins then Kessler, or at least it was proven they did

Kessler can't be on there because Hopkins would be ranked over him.
Only ben down once and been in with some of the hardest punchers. Kessler hasn't really fought a one punch knockout specialist and had to take punishment.
Hopkins fight with someone who dislocated his arm should show the kind of chin he has
Hopkins was down twice.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!

Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Holyfield had a helluva chin. Yes he did go down at times, but usually from exhaustion. He has taken some huge punches, from some of the biggest punchers to ever slap on a pair of gloves.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
CC Drew and alot of people forget it was his heart not his chin that caused him to go down.

Narcisco Valenzuela and Giorgio Campenella both sat him down early.Quartey almost unscrewed his head.

Top notch point....Exhaustion Indeed.....Except cooper fight. The worst I have ever seen Holyfield hurt .
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Barrera had a demon chin. Loads of fucking wars, took stupid shots that didn't stop him.
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Guys like Floyd just haven't had theirs tested enough to be on a top ten list. Not a knock on him, he's just that good.
McCullough's is just ridiculous, I mean a guy like Bernard no doubt has a great chin but he has a great defense too, he's avoided a lot of punches that a guy like McCullough didn't. Really the same for Toney, even though I do think he's proven to have an all time great chin, he also rolled beautifully with punches.
Its those guys that are average or worse on defense and still can take the punches that amaze me. Marion Wilson must have had a good one, don't know if I've even seen him fight or not though.

Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Hagler taking everything Hearns could throw at him was amazing and im glad he's at the top of the list.

Neither does Frazier.

Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
McCall should be to 3 especially because he fought some big punchers. Chuvalo should be number one imo.

I believe Lamotta was dropped hard vs.Danny Nardico in 52',KO'd in the 8th.
Chavez could not resist Frankie Randalls laser right when he had a seat in 11th of #1.

Kessler has never fought any massive hitters so should not be included on the list.

-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
Charley Burley had a great chin.

Well it's all opinion, but i saw a Floyd highlight last week of some of the occasions where he did get hit, he took punishment from Castillo, got tagged by Corrales, Chavez, De la Hoya, once or twice by Baldomir, by ZAb a decent amount and a whole heap at his initial weight and i just thought, whats the point??? YYou get past the guard and then he's got a damn good chin behind that!!!
-
Re: A pound for pound list; with a Twist!
thats a good point. the best way to have a good chin is not to use it up..
mayweather biggest asset is he's got naturalness. natualrness cant be taught.. that is an advantage floyd will always have over 99% of the other fighters
ricky will need to maul like a mutherfuk . pyhsically create oppertunities , get to that body .in order to have any chance at all. .

Correct, some boxers have a rhythm about them that makes the physical part easy, as if they're dancing to beautiful music....
Floyd has it,SRR had it, Ali had it, Sugar Ray Leonard had it....it's a special attribute which is incredibly valuable to the holder...
