Did Jack Dempsey Have Something In His Gloves Against Jess Willard ??

I found this.

Dempey was a mean son of a bit!! and Rickard was a shrewd promoter.I doubt it but the sh!! you find out about back then is Crazy.I think it had more to do with Willards 3 years off and lack of........."Urgency" lets say to face Dempsey.Rickard had to Guarentee Willard $100,000 to just get him in the ring.Dempsey said he only weighed 180 lbs compared to Willards 240 + :o

I doubt he would have continued to get up if he thought there was something in Dempseys gloves. Also Dempseys hands would have been dismantled had he had something in there.

....it was rumored that Dempsey had a railroad spike in the thumb of his glove and this accusation was brought by Jack's former trainer and was later retracted as they became friends again

It's difficult to no what to believe, it was a common occurance back then for such things to happen back then and Dempsey was a rough fella, it's difficult to know.

Considering the man could go toe to toe with Johnson,and lost teeth,had his jaw,cheek,and ribs broken in the fight,and it was a pretty common practice to slip some powdered lead in to a glove,and was down 7 times in the first,wouldnt exactly make me die of shock

The rules were a lot different then & the beat downs a lot more severe. This one was really REALLY bad. I saw either tape or disc of the fight & I think that it was the first round actually that was so bad.

Dempsey dropped Willard & then waited on him to try to get up & whacked him again.

Dempsey ended up dropping him 7 or 8 times I think before he was counted out.

Trust me...he's just bitter as piss about getting his ass handed to him so soundly.

The only bit i really dissapprove of those fights is that you were allowed stand over a downed opponent, Dempsey didn't allow him a chance to even stand straight before the onslaught continued

Hey! I was just watchin an old dvd i have and it folows the storiess of pretty much every linear Heavy champion since the introduction of the Queensbury rules.

When the highlighted Dempsey, they said the obvious, he was tough, brought up mean and hardened from the mines.

But then the narrator said something shocking...."Dempsey fought in the ring as he fought in the mining bars, he fought viciously with a style designed to fend off miners, hobos and homosexuals..."

I read some where a long time ago his hands were covered in plaster cast.

Was this the fight that he had a nail or something in his glove? i read in a book about this and he just fucked him up and knocked him down until the ref stopped it.

This, I've heard many times and not just about Dempsey. They theory is that you sprinkle plaster of paris on the gloves which then sets into a hard cast.

As much as a fan I am of Dempsey, this would not surprise me in the least. They were different days and kearns was an extraordinary shyster....

Well the cutman was claiming him and 3 other major boxing figures saw the tape given to him by some other guy, and he walked off with it and they never saw it again. Just read that book it talks about it in there. he claims he isnt lying and it was on a reel tape or something.

i don’t think so… in those days the gloves were small oz. filled with feathers as stuffing, after a few rounds that stuffing would push off to the side leaving the knuckes exposed . dempsey had big hands with his hands well wrapped , would have felt like getting hit with bat.

his face was dismantled though, how come this wasnt clear in any of his other fights? wilard had a good chin and knew that those punches had something extra in them.

the gloves by nature were not reliable, like today. . back then some held to gather better internally , some fell apart very quickly. this would be my explanation. of course anything is possible

I5 greatest rounds of boxing was also a dvd, i have it....
It was presented by Ferdie Pacheco and had contributions from Emmaneul Steward, Thomas Hauser, Lou DiBella and although i can't remember his name, Dempsey's official biographer, biggest fan and close friend.

When reviewing the dempsey fight he was posed the question about the glove....
Dempseys biographer said "i never heard anything but it wouldn't surprise me."

it definitely is plausible, that kind of thing happened all the time back then

We'll never know. All I know is that Demposey would have flattened him with or withou the railroad spike. Willard was never a good fighter IMO, just right place right time. Haven't seen the fight for some time, but I always remember that some of the shots Dempsey landed looked weird, like he was swinging his straight arm around like a stick, hitting Willard with the side of his fist, looked more like clubbing him than punching him.

Just watched the fight, I had seen it before..knew it sounded familiar.

What is true was that was a horrible beating..cant believe that. It hurts to watch.

And Willard outweighed Dempsey by something like 50-60 lbs?

The severity of the damage that Dempsey caused on a much bigger man and that fact Dempsey's whole purse was supposedly wagered on a first round KO makes me think there must have been something.
