Hopkins wants 60-40 split in Calzaghe fight

Recognized light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, in a recent interview with The Sunday Times, said that he respects Ricky Hatton more than undisputed super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe, because Hatton left the UK to take big fights on American soil.

"I respect Ricky Hatton more because he understood that in order to be considered great in a country that has produced great talent in many sports for many years, you have to get your ass over here. Joe’s known but he’s not well-known, and there’s a difference," Hopkins said. "Until you become known in the world more than you are in your neighborhood, then you’re only a neighborhood champion and Calzaghe’s a neighborhood champion, that’s what he is. So he has to pack his bags and come to the legend that is Bernard Hopkins, step out of his crib in Wales where he’s got his bottle on one side and his pacifier on the other and set foot on my soil so that we can get this on."

Hopkins said that he's only willing to do the fight with Calzaghe if it's on America soil, and if the money is a 60-40 split in his favor. He refuses to do a 50-50 split.

"Joe’s with HBO now, so he’s halfway there already. My offer is 60-40, 50-50 being out of the question, but we can talk," Hopkins said. "When he steps off the plane I’m going to be wearing my Yankee Doodle Dandy red-white-and-blue uniform, just like Apollo Creed, with James Brown’s Coming to America playing on the speakers, and I’ll show Joe what being world champion means, for I am the personification of the American Dream.”

I agree to a certain extent, but Ricky Hatton had Kosta Tyzsu to thank for that, who the fuck could Joe Calzaghe bring over to the uk since he was a champion to get the USA to take notice?? No one is has been slim pickings in the 168 division, Ricky was lucky in that he was a mandatory against a star who in Kosta who he could attract with a big payday to come over the these isles.

Ricky needed the exposure to get him over to the USA just like Joe has got now, i no it has taken him years, but there has been no one realistacly he could of fought, before anyone says RJJ, please the guy was the main man in the world why would he want to fight a guy who no one knows who is a weight class under you? Thats like Floyd coming over here to fight Junior Witter??

Bernard's attitude is whats going to kill this fight. first he wants the fight in America which Joe is happy to oblige & now he wants a 60-40 split in his favor, thats just disrespect for a fighter who has been champion for so long, is undefeated, and is currently hot property in boxing to not only travel to his opponent's backyard but also take a lesser a cut.

A few months ago, after the Winky fight, you fancied Hopkins to batter Calzaghe ;D

Calzaghe will probably agree to the 60-40 split if he can keep the UK TV money. That's what happened with Mayweather-Hatton. Ricky is getting 20-30% of his purse from Sky.

I did indeed and i just though Hopkins could out muscle Joe and rough his way to a win but after seeing Joe take those shots off Kessler i've changed my mind.

im a hopkins fan guys but i have to agree that hopkins saying that is basically saying he wants none of joe. come on bhop step up and fight like you said you would

I think if Joe is keen to fight BHOP he should just call his bluff. 40% would still be bulk$$$ and he'd get the fight he wants. This would give Joe even more respect amongst fans cos it would show that he is after the big fights and not just the money.

Its the principle. Joe has shown that he can bring in tons of fans and sell out fights just as much as Hopkins, maybe more and he is the undisputed champion of his division he shouldnt have to take a pay cut. Hopkins wouldnt do it for Jones and Calzaghe shouldnt for Hop.

Personally, I think it would be worth it for Joe to swallow his pride and agree to the concessions, just so he can shut B-Hop's fat mouth.

Hopkins is a 2 division champion. He's the bigger name. He should get the bigger pay. And like eagle said, 40% is still a couple of millions. Kessler agreed to all of Calzaghe's terms just to make the fight happen. Calzaghe should do the same. That is if Calzaghe and Warren really want the fight.

Stuff the principle, its the fight that matters. In 20 years time no one will know what the fighters were paid, they'll just know who won and who lost. Kessler took all Joe's terms, in fact everyone who Joes has ever fought has taken his terms, so it wont hurt for a role reversal. The fight is for Bhops 175 belt, he is the champ so the terms should be his.

VD do you realise kessler was paid just shot of £3 million pounds? Id be suprised if he got anything above £800k before, so Kessler just set himself up for life for that fight with Joe. So thats a load of bollocks if Joe was to paid anywhere near triple his biggest payday he probably would swim there.

Exactly what I expected.

Wright took basically the same type of deal to face Hopkins.

Joe should too. Joe already said that no matter what...they would take the fight on Bernard's terms.

I hate to say this...but take them terms Joe. Get it signed & then beat his ass...or don't...what ever you can do...do it.
