Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
I have watched this a few times and i still can't believe they gave Nelson a draw Nelson won first 2 rounds if i remember right then Nelson fought in the corner for almost entire round for about 3 rounds on the trot if i can remember then he looked really tired and his punches looked sloppy with no power and i thought after about 5th round Fenech dominated and won pretty much every single round quite easily imo.

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
Long time Professor Fan here But He stunk it up In the 1st.Listless and was trying the "rope myself dope".He shouldnt have even left the corner that night because he was staying there all night anyway. Fenech got Jobbed.
Later said He had Malaria after effects..........Good for both they went to Immediate rematch Sorry Jeff..respect but Rematch was great ;D

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
"The War In The Corner" as I like to call it, I had Fenech winning by about 3-4 rounds. That was a great fight tho. A few of those rounds they just went toe to toe in the corner the whole round , neither would back down.

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
I could see how a judge could be blocked by one of the fighter and that might have effected the score.

Sorry but i can't bro After the 5th round it was all Fenech he was effective aggressor and landed the better punches Nelson's punches were sloppy i think he made a huge error fighting in the corner that long i think that badly effected him.

Nelson just had a bad night due to the sickness. He was always the better fighter. And he proved it in the rematch.

I've never liked Fenech. Seeing him get knocked out in front of his own people is a great joy

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
I didn't like Fenech either but i liked his fighting style but Azumah Nelson is one of my favorite fighters of all time.

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
I do like Jeff Fenech :)
loved his style and went to aus this year and met him which was good.
as for Nelson being better - he was a natural feather/super feather (he even won commenwealth gold at feather in 1978)_ Fenech was at his best at bantam and super bantam , so its unfair to judge him on these performances againest a great fighter in Azumah .
is me or would you guys liked to have seen Jeff againest Mcguigan ?

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
Why do so many people dislike Fenech?

There should never have been a second fight, fenech won the first so easily.

Nelson said he was sick going into the first fight. Which explained his performance. It sounded like a bullshit excuse at first. But he proved it wasn't by destroying Fenech punkass in the second fight.

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
Didnt they actually sign for a third fight? But Fenech Got KTFO by Light hitting Calvin Grove brutally In a Tune up.
Just watched KO again and It looked like Grove hit him with a led pipe.Fenech layed there on the canvas for like 5 Minutes.BRutal.

You are correct. Silky Smooth put an end to the rubber match

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
Considering fenechs best weight was 122 hedid considerably well to beat Azumah Nelson in the first fight at 130, whether nelson was sick or not. Yeah Jeff is not the greatest guy out of the ring but his boxing ability cannot be denied.

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
The first fight was a shocker for the judges, i had Fenech winning 117-111, the 2nd just proved what a great fighter Nelson was. This was a fighter who pushed the great Salvador Sanchez all the way and would have fought a trilogy with the great man had he lived. Interesting that Ring Magazine had this fight as the upset of the year? No fight with Azumah Nelson is upset of the year! Note that two judges had this fight even at the time of the stoppage in the 2nd fight!!
Fenech never recovered from the robbery and that's his problem, losing to Calvin Grove by knockout tarnished his career and standing considerably. I have met him a couple of times and he was pleasant enough.I do notice that a lot of fighters he trains end up leaving him for whatever reason (personality clashes more likely) Green, Taylor and Vic etc
Fenech was a bull in the ring and never took a step backwards, he had great fights with Daniel Zaragoza, Victor Callejas and Azumah Nelson. Fenech was a good but not great fighter who really should have achieved more in his career than he did.

Hard man to impress there Third man. Fenech just a good fighter?
Some of his achievments.
Won IBF bantamweight title in only his 7th fight.
Won titles in 3 weight classes (could have been 4 if given the win v nelson when he was robbed)
Had 11 title defences.
Pretty good for a fighter who was not great, and guys who have done a lot less get a lot more props.

Re: Jeff Fenech vs Azumah Nelson 1 Robbery
Found a good article on Fenech and his out of ring activities. He does indeed seem like quite a lad, and someone not to be messed with.

I guess Eagle i am disappointed that he did not get a win against Nelson and that would have cemented his greatness. Losing to Grove was bad especially as the light hitting Grove KO'd him.
Yes, he won belts early in his career but against nobody all that special. His best wins came against Zaragoza, Callejas and his best performance was the Draw with Nelson. He was pretty well finished at 28 yrs old when he should have been at his peak, i know the hands problem hampered him but i think his temperament may have been a problem. He got hit far to easily and this took it's toll as the Holiday fight was embarrassing. Still a very exciting fighter to watch and always put on a show.
