Favorite Defensive Fighters
We talk a lot here about landing punches and training to throw punches and it seems that a lot of people look up to Tyson and Roy Jones style-wise, offensively at least. I'm curious, though, who you look up to when it comes to avoiding getting your brains scrambled. For me, it would have to be Toney, McGirt, Ricardo Lopez, and JC Chavez of recent vintage, and, of course, Tunney, Benny Leonard, and Jose Napoles of "vintage" fighters.
Who do you like and why?

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Pernell Whitaker
I like watching slick defensive fighters because thats my style.
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
But if you wanted to learn textbook defense then you can't go wrong with Winky Wright.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I like fighters that dont leave the Parish to avoid the punch, those that make you miss and make you pay. But my favourite thing of all time is Baked Jam Roly Poly with hot custard yum with Pernell, Charley, SRL, Ezzard are my top 5.

Burley is good one i have only seen one of his fights though sadly but i liked what i see and im like you i like defensive fighters who make you miss and make you pay not to go off topic but i think Charles and Burley are one of the most under appreciated fighters ever.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Underated on defense is Bhop
Also Frazier,he'd have been a dead man out there without defense

I wouldn't class Frazier as good defensive fighter.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
TM Fraizer I liked Hopkins leaves the Parish. Smart not skillfull.

Bingo, with his reach and height he had to be,otherwise he was a dead man out there, very under rated because in his most famous fights, hes taking alot of punishment, but look who he's up against for god's sake

I would say Tyson had better bob and weave defense than Frazier i like Frazier but he didn't have great defense imo and he would get nowhere near my top 10 list of defensive fighters he was caught plenty by Bonavena and Quarry who are not that fast but thats just my opinion mate.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I think Tinking about it Pernell has to be the man. He always kept in the pocket and was a non puncher, that takes Bottle and belief in yourself he didnt have to many early nights. What a great fighting man, all the others had the equaliser.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I like watching Duran defensively he was really underated in his lightweight days due to his great offensive arsenal, but watching his earlier fights when he was commited he was near impossible to hit
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Thats why he had a long career gally

Will O The Wisp was special, youd watch guys load up thinking they finally have him,and then the target is missing
Actually thats why I like Bhops defense, the other thing I like on Bhop is he tailors it to you,he knows what you like, and his defense is to take it away from you, exactly what you want to do,is exactly what he goes after.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
how about chris Eubank he had a really strange style of defensive but didnt get hit alot in his prime and i enjoyed watching it.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
A guy I grew up watching that was similar to Frazier- in terms of stature and always forcing the fight- was Armando Muniz. He got hit a lot because he was always in range but he made his opponent miss a lot and constantly re-adjusted his attack.

His first fight with Palomino was a classic.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Herol Graham he used to tie his hands behind his back and let people in the pub try and hit him and they couldn't classic :)
-

I can only imagine how it feels for the young'ns
Though by the way,if you can find a way to listen to Scraps physiogimy,Greys, general knowledge, and my knowledge of blocking and balance, and you still lose........
You just got your butt beat son

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
This is EASY...
Altohugh it might not be something you teach a kid, but it sure is fun to watch....
Emanuel Augustus..the way he did the string puppet, awesome...it made it almost impossible to hit him.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I was about to go out but I counldn't help to wander on here. I like a lot of defensive fighters, but the one's that stand out in my mind are the ones with light smart feet.
Willie Pep had lots of strong points with his defense, he could spin a guy around, he could work around their arms and his feet were among the best the game had to offer. I always have to press the rewind button everytime he sidesteps, just making his opponent's blow miss and being right outside of their arm ready to catch them turning. I always enjoy a fighter that with excellent timing and have sidestepping down to an art.
I haven't been able to catch much of Tommy Loughran, or Benny Leonard's fights but from the few fights that I saw I was impressed by what I saw. Loughran could draw a guy in and baffle a guy with his footwork, likewise was the case with Benny Leonard. I liked how they would move one way, then when their opponent was preocuppied they'd change the direction of their footwork and catch them. They were in great condition too, their legs had to be to pull off those moves with such ease. WHen I watch them in action, I think about a mongoose, so quick so sharp, so precise.
I know that there are many other fighters that deserve a mention, but they can't be favorites unless you are able to sermonize them and see them in your mind. :)

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I am constantly amazed at the lack of respect Ricardo Lopez gets around here. That guy had it all. Both offensively and the defensively.
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I think the problem is the lack of awareness for a lot of the great fighters. Personally I haven't seen a lot of fights and because of that I haven't been able to see a lot of great fighters. I didn't know about Recardo Lopez until you told me about him.
I think of this generation Marquez has really shown that he could do it all, he's clever, game, and has proven that he can adapt to his opponents.
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Marquez learned by sparring with Lopez, from what I've heard.
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Wow, that I haven't heard. I think that there's a lot to be learned by who's in the gym at the time of day.
Say Joe, what was that name of that mexican fighter that you told me about. I believe his nickname was "The Golden Boy" this being long before Delahoya's time.
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
Art Aragon. Gooood fighter. Beat hell out of today's Golden Boy
-
Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
I never was able to find any of his fights, but I remember hearing him talking about this one fight, I believe it was for the title, he says, "While there's guys that have to be carried out of the ring, I had to be carried into the ring." It was probably one of those times where a fighter gets a shot at a title a weight class below their natural weight, and that they had to weighed in at ringside. That was hard time to be a fighter.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
He had very good punching technique, but, in the tape I have, he was overpowered by Basilio. My mother, like 2.5 million other people, claims to have seen him fight Lauro Salas in an LA restaurant. Which is funny because Salas was known as a stay at home type of guy.

Re: Favorite Defensive Fighters
