Mayweather is better than Ali ????
I'm better than Ali - Mayweather
Mayweather is regarded as a modern-day boxing great
Floyd Mayweather has stepped up his war of words with Ricky Hatton by claiming to be the greatest boxer ever.
The unbeaten American welterweight insists he is even better than legends Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali.
The 30-year-old, who fights Hatton in Las Vegas on 8 December, said: "I can quit today and be known as the best fighter that ever lived.
"I respect what Robinson and Ali did for the sport. But I am the greatest, and this is my time."
Hatton, who has held world titles at both welterweight and light-welterweight, is also undefeated and lists Jose Luis Castillo and Kostya Tszyu as his most notable victims.
606: DEBATE
Mayweather isn't even close to the greatest of all time. That is all in his head
ML
But Mayweather, who has beaten the likes of Castillo, Oscar de la Hoya, DeMarcus Corley, Zab Judah and Sharmba Mitchell, has dismissed the Briton as "dirty" and one-dimensional.
"I didn't get the chance to watch him against Kostya Tszyu," said Mayweather.
"I already knew what it was - punch, hold, punch, hold. From what I've seen, it was extremely dirty.
"And that's what I'm saying - that Ricky Hatton is a very dirty fighter."
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
He's the greatest of his time...but not all time.
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
It's close between Calzaghe and Mayweather as the greatest of the last 10 years

What about Rjj?
IMo Mayweather is a great. He truely is, but better than SRR? I think not? Greater than Ali? He's close but i don't think so.
Floyd has never entered the Ring against a great opponent and been viewed as an underdog. That is not his fault, it is more likely to be viewed as unfortunate that he wasn't a welter of the 80's 90's.
The Ricky fight will tell a lot for me personally.

Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
I honestly can not even sit and bother to get into this one...there is just tooo much to pick apart on it.....There is a strong case resume wise Mayweather is not the best of the last decade.....Not that he is not the most skilled guy out there right now but IMO there are other guys who have fought better opponents and have come up with wins....
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
A Hatton win, and lets say maybe a win in a unification about against Cotto would have him on the cusp of guys like Ali, SRL. To me Robinson is on a whole another level and is the sports greatest ever

I have to disagree....He would be on the cusp of guys like Leonard, Hagler, Duran, etc.....He would have to accomplish much much more to be in the Ali, Robinson catagories.....Leonard and that lot were damn good fighters and ATG's do not get me wrong...but Ali, Robinson you have to understand have a resume that is outragous.....Look at the ATG's they have faced and beaten...in the era they did it in....Floyd has some good fighters on his resume and he has been dominate don't get me wrong but he also has some weak opp on his resume that he targeted instead of making the big fights...TBH he has not accomplished as much as Oscar did in the ring....I don't know why people often let the undefeated mark get in the way of things....along with the 0 people seem to forget to factor in quality nof opp, stage in the career they beat certain guys etc....

I should have clarified better, Ray Robinson to me is untouchable and Mayweather could unify every title at Welter and beat Kelly Pavlik and still couldnt take Robinsons crown.
Unless he does something even more remarkable I cant see Floyd being the best ever. Of course I exercise the right to change my opinion based on the actions of the next few years.
But I do believe he has more than a legitimate shot of surpassing Ali and Leonard. Ali was the 2nd best Heavyweight and its hard to take a 1 division fighter and proclaim him the best fighter ever. Robinson dominated so many weight classes and had so many great battles and one hell of a streak going.
Leonard was more like Robinson in how he followed in his footsteps.

Fair enough..but again I judge on comp etc.....That is very important to me as it should be for all people who judge fighters as a whole....EG- IMO take a WW who has a 40-0 record and won his titles against weak opp or guys on their way down then take one 37-3 who won a title and his 3 losses came against lets say Ray Leonard by SD, Felix Trinidad by MD and Thomas Hearns by SD.....I would be more impressed with the guy who had the title and lost 3 very close fights to 3 very good fighters......
Floyds best wins are over, Corrales, Castillo, De La Hoya and Judah.....
Leonard has wins over...Benitez, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, ....
Compare the quality fighter that each beat and what stage in their career they were at when each man beat them....
PBF- The Castillo many think Floyd lost to in one of their bouts...Judah we know the story on him....and He did not dominate Oscar....
Leonard made Duran quit, KO'd Hearns, Destroyed Benitez, and the Hagler fight well that is a toss up IMO on who won...But each of these guys were higher quality comp then Floyds best wins...
I am not bashing Floyd or saying he sucks because he is a great fighter I just think he has a loooong way to go before being considered among the elite HE claims to be better then....Thats why I said he is more on the cusp of Leonard......IMO at WW he would be beaten soundly by Robinson!!!!....Robinson did more at MW past his best then Floyd has.....

Like we were saying on the other thread....
He hasn't fought an p4p fighters and he won't have until december 8th and then possibly Miguel Cotto.
It's a bad era for Floyd because he doesn't have the competition that the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard had and Ali had.
Talent wise he's definately up there......almost a perfect fighter. Opposition wise is where he struggles and that's not all his fault.

Agreed no one touches Robinson at Welter, not Leonard or Mayweather

Being schooled by Griffin, KTFD by Del Valle, barely beating Harding and Tarver, looking awful against a crying Gonzales, KTFO by Tarver, etc?
Roy was like superman at supermiddle, though

Jones had some troubles but he still put Griffin down and was on the vergo of a KO win then Griffin acted up and got a gift DQ and in rematch Jones destroyed him so whats your point ??
That was flash knockdown against Del Valle other than that he won every round.
Jones had injury to his bicep in the 2nd in the Harding fight when he blocked an overhand ;eft thats a fact.
He had to lose 25 pounds in 2 weeks against Tarver.
He knocked down Gonzalez x2 and won every round whats your point ??

Hearns would.
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
Ali wouldn't even be in top ten all time P4P list if he would of lost 2-1 to Norton, plus he should of lost Young fight and a few others were controversial like Shavers and Doug Jones fight.
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
Mayweather isn't even close to being regarded as the best fighter ever.
I pretty much agree with Daxx.
Floyd is a proven tremendous fighter, but I don't even think of him in the same league as Leonard, Hearns, Hagler or Duran (superstars when I was a kid).. let alone Robinson or Ali.
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
If we are on about skills wise then Mayweather is better than Ali.

Mayweather chatting bullshit as usual.
On your note daxx IMO he beat Judah who was coming off a beating from Baldomir, Castillo won the first fight and he only won the DLH fight by SD and in a number of people's eyes they had it a draw (Like myself) or a DLH win.
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
You need to watch the fight again Mayweather clearly beat Oscar.
And Robinson had plenty of gifts aswell.

If you look at the scorecards if Jerry Roth would have scored the last round to Oscar where he landed those 3 vicious right hands like Giampa and Kaczmarek scored it to DLH then his card would be 114-114 meaning a draw and I have watched the fight again and DLH landed the harder, crisp punches and by no means did Mayweather beat him clearly.

You have got that mixed up Mayweather landed the more crisp punches Oscar De La Hoya was throwing flurries that missed watch those rounds in slow replay and see how many punches Oscar De La Hoya missed it was plenty thats why he only landed 21 percent of his punches and Mayweather landed over 40 percent and he outlanded Oscar De La Hoya by 80+ punches.
-
Re: Mayweather is better than Ali ????
Mayweather didn't CLEARLY beat Oscar.
I had Mayweather winning - slightly more comfortably than others but
on the night (which is the important part, it's easy to see things different with multiple viewings) a case could be made for Oscar winning rounds because he was always competitive.
Thats why so many people saw it as such as close fight.

Yes he did its just alot of people were fooled by those meaningless flurries by Oscar De La Hoya i had Mayweather winning by 3 rounds.

You can say what you like but IMO and in most others DLH landed the harder punches and Mayweathers punches had no effect whatsoever and am I right to believe DLH was pushing the fight?? IF DLH didn't there would be worse than Taylor-Spinks.

That's a fair statement.
And to argue about GOAT is futile because it is impossible to compare across different eras.
Guys today make so much damn money that they will only fight twice a year. Guys of the "Golden Era" had 150, 200+ career fights.

Oscar De La Hoya was rocked twice not Mayweather, Mayweather landed the more clean and crisp punches on Oscar De La Hoya, and so what if Oscar De La Hoya was the aggressor ?? he still missed most of his punches and that picture you just put up shows Oscar De La Hoya missing with a hook ;)

To big to post apparantly and Mayweather was rocked in the last by 3 hooks big wow he landed more but De La Hoya's had a bigger effect and haven't you got to beat the champ impressively and push the fight?? mayweather didn't do any of those two and the scorecards reflect how close it was.

Outbox him, not for the full 12 but again his punches had no effect and Oscar came back with crisp punches.

Now see...I saw it live...& by the 6th round I knew that Oscar was just wasting his time.
He did throw a lot of meaningless flurries & the pro-Oscar crowd was seething.
Anytime Oscar threw anything...& I mean ANYTHING...they were holding their breath for a stoppage. The funny thing is that everyone was on their feet screaming for Oscar & then all you heard were "Ooooooooooooh...a man...Oscar no!" or some shit like "Come on Oscar whoop his little 'racial slur' ass!" & then it was followed up by another... "Ooooooooooooh...a man...Oscar no!" as Floyd countered him & popped him with shots on the inside.
My brother was texting me feverously wanting to get see who I had winning because it was so hard to figure listening to the commentary & watching the bout on PPV.
It was pretty damned crystal during the bout.
Sure Oscar had his moments...but they all do with Floyd for about the first 6 or 7 rounds & then it's done.

Yes he did its just alot of people were fooled by those meaningless flurries by Oscar De La Hoya i had Mayweather winning by 3 rounds.
I probably had it about the same BUT people I was watching the fight with, and as NUMEROUS people on this forum and the rest of the planet have shown saw it different.
It doesn't make them wrong.
Did you watch it LIVE?
No but i did download the fight the next day without knowing the result so it was basically the same as watching it live.
The funny thing is that everyone was on their feet screaming for Oscar & then all you heard were "Ooooooooooooh...a man...Oscar no!" or some S*** like "Come on Oscar whoop his little 'racial slur' a**!" & then it was followed up by another...
Thats pretty much spot on Wacko cc.

If being an aggressor is a prerequisite to greatness or championship pedigree, what made Willie Pep an ATG? What made Pernell Whitaker an ATG?
What is fantastic about sports is that there are many ways to "get it done" .
Barry Sanders was great. He ran around people.
Earl Campbell was great. He ran through people.
