Who Will Retire First?
First of all, credit to Fernando Vargas for knowing when to call it quits. A few fighters I can think of could learn a thing or two from the younger Vargas.
Oscar De La Hoya
Bernard Hopkins
Roy Jones Jr.
Felix Trinidad
Shane Mosley
Evander Holyfield
Oliver McCall
Winky Wright
..and a few others
All these guys are at the end of their careers. Already this year Gatti, Vargas, Barrera, and Morales have retired after being major draws in boxing. My question is who is next? I think it will be Winky or Trinidad.

Re: Who Will Retire First?
i think all of them (but the oldest hopkins) should retire. The immortal executioner can carry his masterpiece a lot better then the rest of the old has beens ;D

Re: Who Will Retire First?
ooh wait shane shouldn't even be in that list. His still going strong imo.
-
Re: Who Will Retire First?
I agree, though I could see Jones Jr. retiring soon also. You should also add to your list Baldomir, as he didn't look so hot the other night... :-\

All of the other fighters named are decent fighters, Baldomir doesn't belong anywhere near that list

I disagree. I think he looked old agaisnt Cotto. His movement seemed very diminished although he was still competitive I think his in next performance he will look even older. Maybe he shouldnt be on the list, but I think now is a good time for him to retire, or after one more fight.

I thought about Baldomir but I could put 100 fighters on the list so I kept it simple, with the big names of the 90s.

yea his clearly past his best days but the fact that shane and cotto going at it for 12 rounds and nobody flinches is a huge sign of both strong figters and at shanes age fighting a seriel killer like cottos is a huge feat and not getting stopped. It was a close fight and a very entertaining one imo. going into the fight i think shane was the best welterweight and that division is very very deep with talent. But now cotto has won i think his the best at that division and shane near by.

Re: Who Will Retire First?

Oscar De La Hoya keeps getting fights he doesn't deserve. Great at one point, but needs to get out of the way NOW.
Bernard Hopkins should still keep fighting. He hasn't lost in a while or showed signs that he can't fight anymore. His style allows him to fight for a couple more years.
Roy Jones and Felix Trinidad should call their fight "One Last Time" cause there is no way these two should be fighting after their collision.
Shane Mosley proved he still has the ability to fight the big fights. But one or two more then good bye Sugar Shane.
Evander Holyfield should've retired after the second Lennox Lewis fight.
Oliver McCall...WOW I can't believe someone said that name! But yes, he should retire.
Winky Wright also has a style that can keep him in the ring for years to come as well.
You did forget to mention the retirements of probably two of the best of the lighter fighters EVER! Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera!!!

good call. They have been added. I guess it hasnt sunk in that Barrera and Morales have finally retired. And at a good time imo.

Re: Who Will Retire First?
The only ones who aren't living off past glories in my opinion are Hopkins, Mosley and Wright. The rest of those on that list are selling tickets and getting title chances because of what they used to be and their reputation. And anyway, I think that it is those three that can really still compete on a world title level, and could still have huge fights in their futures.
-
Re: Who Will Retire First?
I got a question for the people who said Hopkins should still be fighting.
Has he really been fighting period? I mean really.
Taylor I / C- performance
Taylor II / C performance
Winky / C- performance
Tarver / C+ performance
I mean really let's really analyse his fights is he really fighting? I'm sorry but like I said right after the Winky fight I've always been neutral with Hopkins hes an ATG but after that fight my patience ran out with him & Winky. Either they fucken fight or just retire already. Hug, jab, hug + punch on the inside, jab, hug, jab, straight right miss, counter miss, hug, jab, hug, hug, hug, hug anf hug... >:mad
In regards to that list possibly Winky and for sure SSM can still continue to fight the rest need to hang them up.
Here's others that spring to mind:
Hasim
Quartey
Freitas
Shannon
Lamon Brewster
Robin Reid
Howard Eastman
Robbie Peden

Re: Who Will Retire First?
Mick, you think Hopkins win over Tarver was C+? It was his first fight above middleweight since his debut and he completely dominated him. That was at the very least an A- performance in my book.

Right I understand what he did but come on Tarvers another guy who IMO is just up there for the lime light and not really out there tearing some ass up. Whether it's age or whatever but I've never been fan of 'Bobo' ;D
I would say that was he did was A class thing but it's just how he fought to me I guess I'm just being really hard on fighters like Hopkins & Winky who quite possibly hug more then they actually punch. Hope I made sense there....

Re: Who Will Retire First?
I can see where you're coming from Mick, in as much that Hopkins isn't turning in the sort of performances that he did earlier in his career, but the fact of the matter is that he is still winning fights against big-name opponents in sold-out shows, and although he is, of course, trading on his reputation, he has adapted his style to negate the natural diminishing of the human body as it gets older.
It isn't pretty, but it's sure as hell been effective in his two most recent fights. And you can't tell a dude to retire because his style isn't great to watch, otherwise we'd have about four fighters in the heavyweight division at the moment.

Yeah! you understand what I'm saying SupHeavy... Like I said in the post above I guess I'm just not interested in seeing two grown as men hugging for 12 fucken rounds. That's why I'm rating the performances that way, of course Hopkins cant do it like before so hes finding other methods to get wins and its working for him I'm just not at all interested anymore. I can appreciate smart boxing and I can appreciate a patiend boxer who breaks down opponents but I don't know it's just not for me. Also like I mentioned when theres more hugs in a round then punches theres something fucken terribly wrong there.

Re: Who Will Retire First?
I think Tito will lose to Jones and then retire.
I'm sure why people think Oscar needs to retire. He's never taken a bad beating (so he doesn't have that much wear & tear) and he just fought a very competitive fight against the #1 PFP fighter in the world.
-
Re: Who Will Retire First?
SC. How can you say it is time for Winky to hang it up. Winky looked poor way up there in wieght, he was robbed against Taylor. YOu all just make shit up about one of the greatest ever that is still in great shape. I can not believe you included his name.

Oh come now,he schooled him
Tarver wasted Jones using that pawing jab,and Hopkins took it away from him
Roy Jones was at one point considered the greatest fighter on earth, and Hopkins annihalted both of the guys who beat him
Johnson,when he was undefeated,and Tarver

Re: Who Will Retire First?
Revoke fatman Toney's license. Anyone who needs roids for a SD of Batchelder should retire.
-
Re: Who Will Retire First?
All of those guys have one thing in common imo, they're not going to retire until tehy aaaaaaabbbbbsoooolutleyyyy have to.
-
Re: Who Will Retire First?
Trinidad will retire once he loses to Roy Jones Jr...and Roy might retire too but I think he'll give a shot to Hopkins or Calzaghe before he fully retires.
De la Hoya has been a part time fighter since his loss to Mosley in the rematch

Well said....but I really think boxing should come down harder on the drugs cheats, cause 1 year and 6 month bans don't mean shit when the fighters are only fighting two or three times a year anyway.

Re: Who Will Retire First?
Trinidad he will lose to Jones and retire again ;) ;D

Re: Who Will Retire First?
Wow!!! This thread was made in '07. And most are still fighting.
