I haven't done much sparring recently. Could anyone give me some advice on getting my foot work better when training on the heavy bag.
ok .... this might not help on the heavy bag but this is what i was tought buy my trainner "bobby bland" when following your opoint in the ring ie him going around you... Keep your back foot planted and make small "V's" with your front front so if he moves to your left take your front foot back and then step foward with the foot back twoards him. this will help you with your jab when steping back forward.. to help close the distance.... Most of your weight should be on your back foot just like in most sports like baseball ect... try to keep your feet shoulder distance apart give or take a few inch's... when thoughing your hook it should come off your front foot so if your left foot is forward. shift your weight to the front and too the left and then pivot your weight and hips hard to the right thoughing your left hand with your palm facing your.. works good if you though it after a right cross... so it puts you in the perfect postion. make sure you thou your hook out farther than the cross or you will miss almost always.. sorry i got off track but its hard to talk just about foot work with out talking about punchs cauz they all go together...hope that helped
Good to be back guys...
Now your footwork...
The heavy bag isnt a good piece of equipment to use to learn footwork, unless you put a belt around the bag and a belt around yourself with elasticated rope between the bag and your waist. Stick your arm out so you 6 inches away from the bag thats your distance.
When the bag moves you have to, because it is pulling your centre of gravity. I have always found this a terrific way for balance and movement and punching at the same time.
Hope this helps, there are many ways to do this.
Howie
Thanks fellahs ;)
Can somebody explain the "V" method a little better?
yeh i didn't get it?? but i got another way....
tie a piece of rope to both ur feet about how ever far u hold open ur feet and slack it alittle not too much....then do normal sparring and footwark training like move from side to side...after about a week of doin this wit the rope there and doin it every day for bout half an hour u will see a differece and skippin is very gd for it......ovi!!
that definitley sounds like a good way to get ur footwork up with the rope. ill try that
Well good on bk poster child for reading back anyway..well done .
yeah good work ;)
lol y do yall keep thanking me for replying?? isnt this what a forum is about, helping eachother out and responding if u dont understand. Your Welcome
How to improve my footwork
tie a pice of string or rope to ur feet slack but not too slack and practise verything wit it on ur bags, shadow....ect ect....also get up in the morning and just practise....i mean what i forget is when i'm movin bkwards i'm movin wit ma front foot first thats somit i have to remind maself of...maybe u could think up some goals that u could think today i'ma try to do this...or this ..ect ect it will come natural i am told
Skip alot ,Fancy fast footwork dancing around so you have erratic head movment and are less of a still target is one thing to practice,(practice it but you have to practice also when to lower and set yourself for the hits or else you'll just be a dancing point scorer with not much finish power ;
The other more important thing is to be able to move with and acheive what you want with minimum effort/movement (that is faster and gets the job done with weight behind the moves).knowing where why and what you wish to acheive first is the key.
Read this http://www.saddoboxing.com/andre.html
,you need to have an understanding of this and then you will be stepping exactly where and why you wish to be.
Practice in a mirror and watch how subtle moves change your centre line in and out of range. watch how your reach changes in each small move or how your weight can be distributed onto the end of a move so you have avoided someones punch yet have added to your own power in retalliation.
I read that article and I notice it said something about the opponents timing. how can i learn to count their timing? is it based on their foot movement or overall body movement?
another workout i was doing to better my footwork:
i got a bucket and just moved around it as fast as i could in boxing stance while throwing double n triple jabs.
Some of you gave good tips. I'll have to give it a try. I think some of my footwork gets sloppy.
i'm new to boxing. i'm a lefty and i'm not sure about my foot placement while boxing. i know my left foot is supposed to be behind my right, but how far back n how far apart is it supposed to be?
there is no exact place or rule for that
but try standing staight with your feet under your shoulders
(dunno how what stance is called in english)
now keep your heel of your left on the ground and twist your foot to the outside. now put your toes back on the ground and twist your heel,so your foot is straight again.
now do this 1 more time.
now twis your body so your feet are as far from eatch other as your shoulder
they are not under your shouler
1 is back other is in front.
now that should be somewhere they should be.
just find the best place for the best balance
and rememder to keep the opening
and it may never close, when you walk or any move you make. you keep the opening
hope this helps
hope you understand what i say LOL
personally I feel that following traditional methods of standing are overated. but I do believe that your jabbing arm should always be in front to give you better reach to keep distance between you and your partner. but as far as your feet - as long as you are conformtable with your balance to the point where you feel that you can absorb a punch with your whole body you should be alright. but its going to take time to really fall into position without thought.
make sure u dont stand square and thats it really keep ur shoulder up...stand in which u are comfortable wit other than...dont stand wit ur foot directly behind ur front foot so if ppl turn u u are ready......gd luck for the whole strtin a new boxing thing and really dont worry ppl are very nice....in most places watch out some can be overly friendly...menouk tell him the story! lol every neewb needs ta hear it before makin the desistion!
It's all down to what your doing at the time.
Keeping someone at bay witha jab then your in a front stance.
Usually feet are slightly wider than shoulder width.
IF your fighting nose to nose ,then you are in a netural stance where it brings your shoulders square where you can reach the opponent with two fists.
This is where subtle moves and shifts in footwork can put ommph into your shots and get you slightly out of reach of the opponent at the same time.
This is what needs to be understood and studied in detail so it comes second nature to you.
Read fighting art on front page for more.
I am 15 and fairly new to boxing. I need some instruction on proper footwork. Anything would help, thanx.

Skipping mate, just do things like jump twice on one foot then change and try running on the spot while skipping, this will help you develop some footwork.
Never cross your feet.
Stay on the balls of your feet.
Knee's slightly bent.
Front foot twelve o'clock
Back foot five o'clock.
Hope this helps.
Try and get your head around why you are stepping into a certain position as you practice all of what the other fellas said.
IF you dont know why your stepping in and out of a stance or position then you will get read by the opponent.
Aside from generally staying on your toes for faster movments back and forth and around the opponent ;
You can also practice stuff like heal to toe steps off the front foot ,sliding the back foot into position while shuffeling along punching at the same time ;for when you get to go low and really sit on a punch, to get movment and weight in behind it.
Slight shifts can move your centre line out of your opponents attacking range and at the same time put one of your arms further into punch range!
so think about the small stuff too, its more important than many average fighters know about.
Practice moving the front foot around to avoid an imaginary punch and allow your back foot to self adjust into a balanced stance so you are set to reply etc.
EG: moving your front foot around the opponents front foot etc! (takes your head out and in in a u shape around their lead arm ,Try it out on your own or with a mate and see where you end up and whether it helps or not.
Moving the front in and out to avoid, duck and reengage on the outside of his punching arm etc.
Moving from the inside of someones arms to the outside of a lead arm is real handy to know how.
Ducking while moving ,heel lifts when striking, foot turns etc etc are all in the game too (when the time is right).
Some stuff in here may help a bit. http://www.saddoboxing.com/andre.html
This advice Im about to give is when you get more advanced. When your skipping move your head side to side and try to stay in the same spot. This will alter your spine and make your body want to move with your head.
You dudes seem to know a lot about boxing and footwork . Did prime tyson have the feet to be fleetfooted, to be able to get up on his toes and dance around the ring as fast as a young larry holmes ? .
Are any of you guys there ? .
Excellent posts Totalfighter and Andre.
'Remember besides ring maneuvering, footwork is a main contributing factor in coordinating the body. I' don't pretend to know Mike Tyson, but I imagine that his footwork contributed to the effectiveness of his punches. Footwork also has a part with what you have in mind, Larry Homes fleeting footwork helped him get into eye-candy positions for his jabs. For any fighter close and afar, short-rythem, long-rythem, footwork will take you where you wanna go and open doors. Do the drills, do yourhomework and who knows, you might be floating like a butterfly before you kow it.

I dont think so , HE was directed to train flexable hip movements and knee bends and heel lifts all into the walk that we always saw him do.
He would bend at the waist,Fists up next to his ears ,elbows down,he would come in low and bending from left to right so that his opponent couldnt get a clean shot off. All the time he was peek a booing in between looking for the space to throw a shot up. When he threw it had the other hip comming around as well as his leg straightening and his heel lifting so he was an evasive KO artist all in one set!
I wouldnt say he could dance the night away like some though,he just wasnt built that way.
His trainers were smart they worked with what he bought to the table naturally as far as his build went.
People with not so good head movment (like thick necked ,high shouldered heavyweights can still get it from stretching and training other parts ,so that the movment and bending and flex from their ankles up to their hips transfers up to the head.
What makes you think tyson wouldnt of being able to dance ? .
people are always saying in boxing how you should try and move outside of the jab when its thrown so as to avoid the next shot(big right hander for orthodox), but when someone who's shite just comes at you throwing right hand bombs, are you supposed to move to your own left(outside their right) so as to avoid the left hook, or is it better to move to your right so you're out of range of another right? any ideas? if you can follow that
As always Gary my answers going to be 'All of the above' the more variety you have the more dangerous you become, if you need any help with the specifics feel free ;)
He could to his own limits, but not like a nimble fast footed less thick built boxer.Quote:

Thats a tight question cause it depoends on where you are situated when it comes.Quote:

Or if your in front of it why not go out under it or out to that side .
Or even switch your stance by taking your lead leg back around your rear leg as the shot comes which takes you clean around it and you still control it as it comes but with the rear arm which automatically comes to the front in front of your nose as you go.
You could even just duck and come out behind him if he is that overcommitted and tag him with a gut shot as you pass through, pop out to the side and bomb him.
