The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
Over the years there have been many showboats from Sugar Ray Leonard to Roy Jones. Ali, Camacho, Whitaker, Augustus, Tapia and many others all had there own form of showboating and a lot of times it was more than just playing to the crowd, but also about phychologically ruining their opponent. Personally I dont care much for showboating but for some boxers it can be at times a necessary part of their style. Roy Jones is definitely one of the greatest showboats but most of his tactics like putting his hands behind his back came from one man who at least to me was the was the greatest to clown with his opponents skillfully and flawlessly, Nicolino Locche. Sugar Ray Leonard is second to me.

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
Mayorga is a showboater at times, and as you mentioned Augustus was certainly one. I don't like it for the most part, but for some reason guys like Augustus and Ali I could do it and I loved it. Plus, it's them in the ring so whatever floats their boat :-\

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
The 1st two names that come to mind are Ali & Naz.
*Please note that, that's the ONLY time you will see Nazs name mentioned along the likes of Ali.

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
One reason I like Floyd so much is because of his demeanor in the ring; he doesn't do that b.s. showboating stuff; if he did I wouldn't be able to watch. He acts like such a c#ck outside the ring, but when he steps inside, he is as focused a fighter as I've seen, and professional almost to a fault!! Guys like Augustus were more interested in playing games than truely getting to business, and though Augustus was a very good fighter, I don't know how many fights he lost either because the judges got turned off from it or because his opponent just spent more time fighting. Another fighter that shows off too much is Jason Litzau. That punk has talent but he will keep getting ktfo because of his b.s. games.

What about your main man Jorge Paez? He could turn it on for the crowd.

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
One line sticks out "Psychologicaly Ruining there opponents"...
Bernard Hopkins..........They started to doubt there judgement around the 2nd or 3rd round. All time favorite of mine but sometimes he was his own biggest showboat fan
-
Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
2 matches with extreme showboating which stick out for me are :
Leonard vs Duran 2 - Some might say it ended because of the showboating
Nas vs Robinson - SO cruel...
-
Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
Ali was the worst showboater I can recall. And he lost how many fights? 5?

You forgot Jorge Paez big time. He was made for showboating :)
-
Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
Ali showboated impeccably early, but as you stated it was very psychological and furthermore he often he adjusted his position in the ring whilst showboating.
Sugar Ray Robinson's entire career was a flamboyant display of superiority of movement in comparison to his crude in comparison opposition so he ranks highly...

Ali is definitly the greatest at it
But you have a point about B-hop,you can see in his fights how he's in the other guys head, beating him from the inside out.
-
Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
I used to like it when Mi vida loca showboated..
The throwing his arm in the air and circling his glove above his head..Lol That was the coolest
-
Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
Roy jones is by far the biggest showboat in my eyes, but he is classy with it, the behind the back K.o, the rooster impression on Toney, his take on the Ali shuffle, winding up his right hands, the list gos on but he learned these tricks from the great show boaters of the past and put his own take on them.
-
Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
Has to be Naz,check out his fights wit badillo, robinson, tom johnson, most of his early fights...the guy was the ultimate showboat...legend

That's good....Beating him from the inside out.Well put. CC on that one Trainer M. Ive concluded last few years that Hopkins really enjoys the "art" of systematically breaking you down mentally, then beating you up Physically.

Tapias fight with Henry Martinez was a CLASSIC showboat example. He fought like he was possessed,Jumping, yelling,Bolo,ETC.One of the craziest displays ever from him.

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
If i remember rightly NAz vs Badillo, 7th Round.
that was awesome....and tight at the same time.

That wasn't hardcore showboating, and that was a warm up fight.

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
The greatest showboater of all time was a 1950's wrestler called Gorgeous George.
He was the first wrestler to do it, and he was the guy that a young Cassius Clay copied in order to sell more fight tickets. Clay was the first boxer to ever do it ..... thus Gorgeous George is the father of all modern sports showboating and deserves some credit?

When a fighter makes football picks in the middle of a round, thats showboating and disrespecting the opponent at the same time. The Ali shuffle or putting your hands behind your back is just showboating.

I like his chin tap right before he staggered Zab. Hes not a showboat though, just a proud fighter with an exceptional chin.

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
I think I have to say Roy Jones. The chicken wing he used to do more than showboat; he ktfo of his opponent. Also, Bryant Brannon, I think his name was, Roy was pummeling him in the 2nd round, stepped back and told the ref to stop the fight (you can read his lips) then shrugged his shoulders and went back to pummeling him again. And Brannon at the time was a ranked and undefeated fighter. Let's not forget he was the first (and really only) fighter to go an entire round without getting hit (remember the guy had him in a corner and still couldn't touch him?). When he fought Toney he feinted him and when Toney tried it back he popped him. How do you top that?

Re: The Greatest Showboat Of All Time
nah i change my mind it had to be roy jones jr. cause when you make a music video of how great you are i havent seen anybody doing that
