John Duddy - Matt Vanda, February 2nd 2008
Bored at work, I was browsing through boxrec to see if there was any interesting fights to look forward to (we have been _very_ spoiled recently, I know, but one starts to get high expectations...). Might do a post later, as a sort of round up of the few interesting fights yet to come in 2007, and/or the outlook of 2008 so far (January and esp. February are looking good imo).
Anyway, noticed that boxrec lists John Duddy-Matt Vanda on the undercard of Maskaev-Peter. I hadnt seen this before, but it might be of interest to some people here (a google search on Duddy-Vanda brought this story - looks like the fight is legit: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7135614.stm)
Looks like Duddy should take this one home rather easily imo, but I've never seen Vanda fight, so cannot really rule him out. 3 defeats in 2007 doesn't bode to well though.
Any comments?

Duddy had a tough (but rewarding) night saturday last. Got in 10 tough rounds with the very expierienced Eastman which will in turn benefit Duddy.
However he looked ordinary and lacking in power (not to mention mobility and defense!) so he'd better step it up.

Eastman is tough but he is well shot and that showed in his last two fights. I was expecting Duddy to handle Eastman easier.

Vanda sucks. If you think Duddy got a gift against Yory Boy, you should see the Vanda fight. Wow, that was a bad decision. He also lost to Anthony Bonsante, and struggled against club fighter Troy Lowry. Duddy ain't the greatest, but he's a legit fringe top 10 and he should crush Vanda.

But he's not only popular he's hyped also. If you view Duddy without the volume on your television you'll see he's nothing exceptional. A nice rounded fighter sure, but as of yet he's got nothging special in the arsenal.

You say that, but who exactly hypes him? Maybe he gets hype in the UK that I don't know about. To me, overhyped is when fans and media think a guy is better than he is. Well promoted is when a fighter's people do a good job of selling him. I think Duddy falls in to catagory #2. Your promoter is suposed to hype you up, and it's not overhype unless fans and the press by into a promoter's crap instead of using there own judgement. I'll stand corrected if you tell me that the British boxing press and fans are hyping him up to be a future champ, but I'm not seeing that over here. I guess some of the announcers of his locally televised bouts do that, but they overhype any local fighter.
I don't think real boxing fans or the boxing press give him any more credit than he is due. The only thing special in his arsenal is a good chin, a handsome face, a decent punch, and a fan friendly style., Still, with nothing being exceptional, I rate him as maybe the 15th best MW in the world, give or take a few spots.
The real future Irish MW is Andy Lee, but I think we all know that around here.

I dont care if you bite, I will gladly debate you over Hattons spoon fed career if you really want. Its easy to build a rep beating old has-been's. We will see how good he really is when he gets in with more skilled boxers like Witter and Malignaggi. Kostya is his greatest win and I wont knock that one..but I am having trouble justifing the rest. Just watch how he got knocked out, he came in throwing a left hook with his right hand near his gut. Thats skilled boxing to you?

Yeah thats it exactly. Over heree the majority of people are led to believe that Duddy is a world beater. In the same way they were led to believe that Bernard Dunne was. I t seems the promoters are more than willing to tow the public along and spend money in believing they have a world champ on there hands. For me this is a way to make money in the here and now but disregards the future as when a true hope comes along (Lee?) they will think the press are crying wolf again and ignore.

No Contest man, you no that no Professional boxing is eay. It takes hard work and dedication to win any fight...
While even as a Hatton fan I agree that he stayed at domestic level too long and Warren prevented him meeting some good fighters I don't think his quality is to be questioned. He is a good fighter, but is faltering at the great line. As for the low hands, he could get away with that against other fighters and did, but was caught badly by the super quick Floyd. I f I were to raise a few points in his defence it would be 1) he was tiring 2) he was being beaten 3)I feel the evnt got to him and he lost heart.
But i ALSO AGREE THAT WE WILL REALLY SEE hATTON'S METTLE IN FUTURE FIGHTS, WITH mALIGNAGGI AND wITTER...AND HOPEFULLY tORRES ALSO???

You know I like Hatton , I just call it how I see it.I am pulling for him to rebound but its not gonna be a walk in the park like alot seem to think. I just dont see this over-hype for Duddy here in the states, maybe it's just Ireland your talking about, I wouldnt know. Over here its hard to find someone that thinks he's the next big thing(besides me).

Yeah Duddy's hype here is huge. As I've mentioned people are led to believe he's unbeatable!
As for Hatton, his next fight will tell a lot. But i see it as a bad omen that he wants to wait til june

CC for clarifying that issue for me. I didn't realized he was getting that type of build up over there. The young MW who was getting hyped in the US proved himself to be the real deal, but I don't think the same will happen for Duddy. To me he's bit like Gatti or has a chance to be- very popular, strong loyal following, gatekeeper to the top echelon, minor belt holder, and eventually, quality opponent for real up comers.

I think your correct there. Lee on the other hand may be the one to reach the upper regions as he is possessed with both a better punch and skill set than Duddy.
Duddy is a likeable fellow, a good fighter but even as an amateur he was active only in mediocrity. That sounds harsh but unfortunately it's true. He will eventually fight Matthew Macklin I believe.
