Gavin Rees to face Kotelnik on Jan 19 according to boxrec.com!
Is this guy any good at all, isn't he the really short one that fought Solomon Mbaye?
funny comments from Enzo Calzaghe on a Hatton-Rees fight
fightnews
"[Hatton] needs to prove he deserves a world title shot first," WBA super lightweight beltholder Gavin Rees' manager/trainer Enzo Calzaghe (father of Joe) bizarrely told the Daily Star. "Just because you are a name doesn't mean you should get a world title shot straight away." Rees, who was fighting in six-rounders two fights ago, and was considered a safe defense when he upset Souleymane M'baye for the title in an undercard bout in July, has a record of 27-0, 13 KOs. IBO light welterweight champion Hatton (43-1, 31 KOs) is a three-time world champion, is widely still considered to be the top 140-pounder, and gave pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather a tough go in a Las Vegas PPV megafight that attracted 20,000 Brits overseas. The elder Calzaghe did not specify what Hatton needs to do to prove he deserves a shot at Rees.

Re: Gavin Rees to face Kotelnik on Jan 19 according to boxrec.com!
Having been checking on boxrec this evening, I noticed that Gavin Rees is penned in to fight andreas Kotelnik on the undercard of the Skelton v Chagaev bout in Germany on 19 January.
Kotelnik is really at the fringes of title challenger status, and is not too bad a match up for Rees in my opinion. With a draw and a defeat against M'baye, and a loss to Junior Witter, Kotelnik's last outing in June was to beat Amir Khan victim Laszlo Komjathi in an 8-round UD.
Rees will need to work his socks off and fight his heart out even to beat Kotelnik, who is much more of a natural at light-welterweight, and a 2000 Olympic Silver medallist.

I'm pretty sure Kotelnik is the mandatory. Also, reports said he was robbed in the recent draw against M'Baye (a Warren fighter in England), wherefore it made sense for him to get another shot.

January 19th eh?
I just worked out Rees' title reign will have been 213 days, 3 days longer than Shannon Briggs.
So he can at least be proud of that. ^-^

Quit the negative thinking man...if Kotelnik can't even get rid of Komjathi who's fought lower down the rankings, he can't be that good. If Kotelnik fights smart, no doubt he'll win, but Rees will have to rough him up and throw those scrappy doo punches to the Kotelnik gut all night long to have a chance at winning.
I'm starting to actually want to see this bill on tv, although I might switch off before the main event.

I'm negative just a realist. I still think Ian Napa could take him. I'd love to see that fight.
Re: Gavin Rees to face Kotelnik on Jan 19 according to boxrec.com!
If he wins this i persoanlly think he should go after JW,PM or RT just to try and win another title, he wouldnt beat Hatton and he couldnt do much else. It will be a tough fight for him this one though! But with Enzo Calzaghe in his corner i think hes going to become a stronger and better fighter.
Re: Gavin Rees to face Kotelnik on Jan 19 according to boxrec.com!
now on boxing talk it has Rees offering Hatton a chance at his title, no mention of Kotelnkik.
Re: Gavin Rees to face Kotelnik on Jan 19 according to boxrec.com!
I would prefer Hatton to retire, then to step down to fight Rees. He doesnt offer anything, I would be annoyed with Hatton for doing it because Witter deserves it a lot more than him.
Re: Gavin Rees to face Kotelnik on Jan 19 according to boxrec.com!
Hatton would smash Rees - A total mismatch.

HAHA so would I Bilbo, if things like that happen you have to laugh but it could only happen if Hatton got DQ.

I'm not so sure, now we all know Hatton is vulnurable to corner posts and turnbuckles Rees' strategy of backing into the corner and moving away when Hatton lunges in could well see Ricky KO himself again.

I reckon Frank will have options on whoever fights Rees next (maybe Kotelnik)
he's not very talented and he is quite dumpy. ;D
good to see the average guy winning a world title tho.....gives everyone hope i suppose.
He is quite a tough fighter.
it was awesome watching him beat M'Baye. like the little kid at school beating up the much bigger bully.....all be it with what i'd call 'belly punches' rather than body shots.
