Why is Margarito still in the picture?
He barely beat a Clottey who broke his hand in the fight and up to that point was winning, and then he lost decisively to Pau Williams. I just don't see what he has done to warant being even considered in the WW race at this point, and I see no reason why COtto, Mayweather, Mosley, Williams should fight him before they settle their own shit at the TOP.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
did u see his last fight?
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Wow he knocked out a lightweight in 1 round, and it was Golden Johnson who hasn't been anybody for a long time. Vivian Harris knocked him out in 3 rounds, and look what happened to him in his last fight. Margarito needs to beat real opponents before he deserves anyone. The sad thing is he has a punchers chance against Cotto, but he doesn't deserve, and I think its a very long shot for him to beat Cotto who is much faster, and more refined, but Cotto doesn't have a chin that has been tested. Regardless Margarito's only good win was against Cintron and that was awhile ago.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
are Cotto Mosley Mayweather willing to fight Paul Williams? When that happens we'll know why Margarito is still in the picture. Margarito beat Clottey and had he won round 12 he would've topped Williams.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Margarito will win a rematch with Williams. Mark my words!!!
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Might as well be, as he will compete with any of them at 147. Though it was a while ago, he curred out Cintron who holds one of the belts, so he should be in the mix, and it makes more sense than Judah who keeps getting his a## beat at 147 but still keeps getting his name in the mix.
Margarito will give all of them fits, except for possibly Floyd. Since Currrmit hurt his hand, and it's leaving Williams hanging, would be nice to see a rematch with Williams. I think he'll beat Cotto or give him hell trying, and we all know he'll take Cintron's belt if he ever mans up to fight him again. As far as Clottey, he was winning before his hand broke, but that doesn't mean he would have won the fight if he didn't. I'd like to see Clottey/Margarito rematch as much as a Williams/Margarito rematch. Margarito is definately a threat to those guys though.
To be fair though, since his loss to Williams, PW should get a shot at Cotto 1st, and the winner of that a shot at Floyd. But Tony will be waiting.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
I wont bother with this one.... :(
Thanks LEGION... You pretty much summed it all up.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Umm, why wouldn't he be in the picture? He was the #1 contender before he lost a competitive decision to one of the most vaunted prospects in boxing.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Margarito-Mosley or Margarito-Cotto.....that's why he's still "in the picture" because he's still a fringe contender.
He's a decent fighter, he adds depth to the division.

Clottey is tough as nails and a top caliber fighter,, The Williams fight was competitive not like Tony was blown out or embaressed....His biggest downfall was his slow start...He looked great in his last outing, he dismantled the current IBF champ two bouts before he won the title.....I can't see why he would not be in the mix

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Actually after a decent start Joshua Clottey got a slapdown put on him.
It boggles my mind that EVERY other fighter who claims a hand injury it's just seen as an excuse, Collazo against Mosely, Cintron against Felciano, Kessler against Calzaghe etc but such is the hatred for Margarito that when a guy claims to have hurt his hand against him then it means that Tony was for certain going to lose that fight. ::**
Clottey is a front runner, he started well but when Margarito turned up the heat he wilted.
And FYI Margarito had an ACTUAL REAL injury documented BEFORE the fight.
But he took the fight anyway and beat Clottey's ass.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
If he won one more round against Williams you would have never started this thread and Margarito would still be WBO champion. But because of one round he should be out of the WW picture. Youre right ::**

Well, atleast you made it through intro without Calling Margarito a "Journeyman" .
Margarito Is a force at welter that others will be forced to deal with. You can try to sweep him under the rug but you cannot deny he is a serious threat to ANY top Welters.I think he'll give Cotto all the hell he can handle with rangy power and wide arsenal of punches from all angels, along with an underlined meanstreak not seen alot today.
He lost to Williams after a pedestrian start. He was phasing Williams late and I think he can take a rematch.Willaims not exactly a finished product.
EVERY fighter in history will be asked to dig down within and overcome Infight Injuries.Be It busted hands,Broken jaws, swollen eyes, broken collar bones ,Dislocated shoulders, sprained ankles,Etc.etc.etc.
Its a brutal and beautiful contact sport where on any given night a man will be asked hard questions.Clottey will come back full force. As will MArgarito.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Realistically, he was very lucky Clottey injured his hand. This wasn't one of those fights where a guy continues to throw his "injured" hand at full force and then claim a hand injury afterwards, Clottey was clearly a one-handed fighter. Of course these things happen and you can't fault Tono for doing what he had to do, but you can't pretend like Clottey wasn't beating his ass when he was healthy.

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Margarito needs to pursue the WBC belts instead of the WBO. The man seems to totally avoid big paydays. Everyone knows that Oscar, Mayweather, and Cotto love the WBC belts, but yet Margarito is always infatuated with the WBO belt. Who wants the WBO belt? No one. Margarito needs to wake up quickly before time leaves him behind.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Comments from the Margarito Clottey fight at boxrec:
"Comment(s):
- Margarito suffered from a severe sprained ankle only a week before the bout, and also had problems with his left shoulder as reported days before the fight.
- Clottey suffered an injured left hand in round four, probably while landing a left uppercut. He immediately went into retreat and told his corner at the break.
- Showtime reported this live, explaining why Clottey proceded to lose rounds five through eleven on all three official score cards.
- Clottey later admitted his hand was not broken as initially reported."
Margarito is a warrior. If he can avoid getting cut, he will give any welterweight the fight of their life! His biggest downfall is that he can be a slow starter.

Forget the trinkets.Maybe It has more to due with Beating Williams who had just defeated him in a close fight between 2 top tier Welters.
soup mix Belts are used as Door prizes alot of time's,
Rematch regardless of Belt vs. Williams would be great.

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
personally id rather see margarito vs kermit cintron II more than any other margarito match up out there IMO!

When I come back online later,I'm ccing everyone that responded to this rather fucking stupid thread.Awesome replies ALL around ESPECIALLY the above.Clottey injured his hand, did NOT break it. Tony was genuinely injured BEFORE the fight, hence the longer layoff after it.Tony showed more hearta, albeit he looked horrible, but WON. What is so damed hard for some of you to understand about that? ??? Who else is willing to fight PW? That's what I thought.
Awesome responses guys, seriously,it gets grating seeing all these dumbass threads made with no intention other than to wind up Margarito fans.Nice to see there are some here that recognise he is a warrior and an excellent fighter, win, lose or draw.(and posters that have a little common sense¬) All those responses were awesome, based on FACTS or legitimate reasons.Great work.

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
CC Gamo, right on with that. Zab's a joke, as well as Cintron, so that leaves PW, Cotto and Tony to fight at the top, possibly Clottey.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
I have margarito in the mix in my book mainly because one loss doesn't take away every fight he won and looked good in before the williams fight. Just because he lost to williams that night doesn't mean he can't hang with some of the best in his division. I didn't think he was the greatest before that loss but i sure didn't drop him completly out of the race after. I'd love to see margarito and cotto personally more than i'd like to see cotto fight pbf.

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
The only reason that Margarito was EVER in the picture was becase of Bob Arum. He lost to the same Paul Williams that all of the Margarito drinkers considered nothing more than an over-hyped prospect before the fight. Williams wins, then all of the Margarito fans start screaming about how Paul Wiliams is the most ducked fighter in the welterweight division. Walter Matheyesse (or however his name is spelled) wasn't scared to fight Williams, neither was Sharmba Mitchell, neither was/is Cintron, and none of the top fighters are scared to fight him either. Paul Williams is good, but not on the level of a Mayweather or Cotto (yeah, I finally that admit Cotto is a bad-ass after the Mosley fight) and Margarito is a few notches below Williams. Paul Wiliams is a B+ fighter, so I guess that leaves Margarito at a C or C-
Beating a washed up Golden Johnson (who was never very good in the first place) means absolutely nothing. He's got a good promoter, and that's it.
Let us not forget that he also lost to Daniel Santos not too many fights ago.
Antonio Margarito is not a big player in the welterweight division, by any means.

You're absolutely right Bilbo. Everything I posted was wrong and Margarito should be elevated to the top of the welterweight division for beating Golden Johnson ::**

Tony put fear into Floyd's heart and this is something I have never seen before. Floyd would pee himself everytime he heard Tony's name. You got to be pretty big when you can make the pound 4 pound champion freak out everytime he heard the name Tony.

You know, you might be right about Clottey in that regard... Front Runner. Maybe.
Iv heard he comes down from some riddiculous weight like 175 or somethng (any truth in that??? ) maybe its a stamina thing that saw him fade a tad.
Im waffalling on but its because i really like Clottey as a fighter but i just know im overratting him some how...
I think you might just have an sly answer there. I mean, do we really know if he fucked up his hand in the Margarito fight?
~EDITED~
Anyway, back on subject. Im not a Margarito fan and i dont find him particularly pleasing to watch but his merits are evident. Antonio Margarito is clearly a top 5 WW

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
I agree with Taeth and frozensolid. I'd rather see Margarito-Clottey 2 than any other Margarito fight. Second would be Margarito-Cintron 2. He would not be competitive with Cotto or Mayweather at all.
-
Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
Don't be sore because Zab can't beat anyone up at the top :( That fool keeps getting shots for some reson, and Tony would beat him criminally, so let Tony have his chance. If we go by your grading system than Zab must be F+, since is all he does is lose. At least Tony gave Golden Johnson a one sided beating within 2 minutes while Zab "Stupid" Judah could barely scratch out a victory over a bum with a 22-10 record on FNF's, LMAO.

That would be cool but im not sure Cintron is interested. Clottey. thats different. But like Legion, said let Tony have his chance.

Re: Why is Margarito still in the picture?
I think my own opinion of Margarito is that he's kind of similar to Librado Andrade. He's not particularly skilled but he hits hard, he's very strong, he can take a shot and he never gives up.
Where he scores more highly than Andrade however is in his size. Andrade fights in the super middleweight division where he is a big but not exceptionally big guy.
Margarito has Andrade's assets coupled with the fact he is HUGE for a welterweight.
Imagine Librado Andrade fighting full strength at 160lbs and you basically have Antonio Margarito.
He's a frightening guy to fight against in his weight class. Fair enough he was beaten by Williams (whose the biggest welterweight in the world) and Daniel Santos (who is a good sized junior middleweight probably only a fight away from a world title shot) but certainly Floyd and Cotto havn't faced anyone like him yet.
Not saying he will beat those guys but he's certainly an interesting test.
I still think he'll get back in the mix. If he can destroy Cintron again he'll be right back up there.
Besides if Floyd takes a year off as planned Cotto, Williams, Mosely etc will be looking for a big name opponent and he could fit the bill.
Don't discount him just yet.

I think he is far more skilled than Andrade, Andrade greatest asset/defense is his tremendous chin, he gets tagged left and right. Margarito was showing pretty good defence towards the last half of the fight blocking the majority of Williams shots.

I had no idea his hand actually for certain wasn't broken.
