Can't remember anyone saying that Hatton did not help to sell the fight, even the dumbest person who watched it knew that the crowd was dominated by the British who traveled many miles to see the fight, that alone gave it away. Silly if you ask me

With that many people paying to watch it its a bit of a discrace that the bbc did not put it on for free.

Could it have been the largest PPV boxing match ever???

So Bilbo, do you think the BBC is crunching the numbers right now? Making sure they didn't get cheated out of any funds?
::ring::
Random Brit: "Hello?"
BBC: "Where did you watch the Hatton fight?"
Random Brit: "I'm just 6 years old!"
BBC: "Stay put, we are sending a van to your house. And your neighboors house. So don't try to..."

I was talking about PPV sales.No-one thought Hatton was anywhere near the draw Mayweather is. Wrong,he's actually a bigger draw!Judging by this fight especially seeing as Hatton was probably more well known in the States than Mayweather in the UK.

All together? I think it falls just short of Mayweather Oscar but fricking heck,Hatton really does not need to leave the UK to fight!!I mean I knew he was popular but THIS popular?! He drew in more numbers than Floyd in the States?!

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
It doesn't take a lot of working out how big Hatton is considering they did 850,000 in the States. Floyd did 300,000 odd PPVs when he was the "star" attraction in other fights. Obviously he's much bigger post Oscar fight, but surely not big enough to warrant that kind of jump in numbers.
-
Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
It was real big.. As big as guys talking about it in the pub just people who dont even folow boxing..
I dont know many who didnt either know it was on and wanted to watch it, or didnt watch it
Must have been somewhat disapointing for most..
Everyone was buying it.. It was well advertisedd
If only a fight that was bound to be a foty was advertised like that..Then the boxing scene would go through the roof..
Imagine if the ammount of casual fans in britain had watched a fight like cotto - hatton.. Theres lots of reasons why that wouldnt happen but it certainly has more chance of bieng a classic

aint it just! thats realllyyyy impressive numbers imo....though probly because in fairness most people saw it as a chance to beat the best in SOMETHING for England this year after the failures (and continued failures) weve had sporting wise!

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
this just proves the british are the best supperters in the world...
look at the PPV numbers any top American can do and then compair it to that and considerer the ratio of people in each country.. Wow that is mad!

I think it's an unfair comparison because Hatton is one of a very small group of UK superstars.
In the USA the choices are numerous so you don't have to be a Mayweather fan if you don't want to. You are free to like one of the many other big name fighters with a PPV you can buy.

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
why can u please explain which are your big name PPV fighters bar Oscar?

Over the past years you have Hopkins, RJJ, Tyson, Evander, etc.
How many boxing PPV's were offered in the UK in 2007? I have no direct info on the boxing scene outside of the United States. I just hear folks talking about the limited viewing opportunities. Hatton & Calzaghe and then everyone else...
If the UK boxing scene were an icecream palor it would offer Hatton Mint, Calzaghe Pecan and Vanilla. So it would be no surprise if everyone in the UK said Hatton Mint was there favorite flavor, would it?
Just wondering what I did buy...
I bought...
De La Hoya Vs. Mayweather
Mayweather Vs. Hatton
Barerra Vs. Marquez
Cotto Vs. Mosley
Cotto Vs. Judah
Hopkins Vs. Wright
Ibragimov Vs. Holyfield
There was also ... Pacquiao Vs. Barerra II
Diaz Vs. Morales
Pacquiao Vs. Solis
Mayorga Vs. Vargas
Chavez Jr. Vs. Sanchez
Jones Jr Vs. Hanshaw
-
Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
why can u tell me what PPV figherts you currently have...
you cant exactly say Holyfield and Jones jr are still PPV
I think that Britain has got just as many legit world champs if not more than the US now

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
I'd be very suprised if these figures were that high, I mean the entire population of the UK is 60 million and I don't think for a minute that over a million of them bought the PPV
That's 1 in 6 of the entire population. Now considering that half the population are women, a third are probably under 18, a couple million mentally disabled, a million gay, and around half the remaining figure completely uninterested in boxing then you are already left with not that many.
So of the remaining eligible potential buyers I guess the majority would have watched it with at least one other person bringing the total down still further.
1.2 million INDIVIDUAL buys? Sorry but I'm not buying that.

I think it's probable that the UK numbers were driven as much by the spectacle of Hatton fighting the #1 PFP fighter as by Hatton's "drawing power" alone. I mean, would Hatton-Malignaggi bring in the same 1.2 million? I sincerely doubt it.

It would not be correct to state that those UK sales are all Hatton. After all, did RH sell those numbers vs. Collazo, Urango, or even Castillo? No, sir.
Those numbers were generated because he was fighting Mayweather who is the p4p #1, and made himself British public enemy #1. Additionally, Mayweather's press tour antics amped up the British populace.
Will Ricky sell those numbers in his next fight? WOULD those numbers have been equivalent if Hatton was facing Cotto or anyone else (ex-Oscar)?

LMAO.
BTW, I think there are a million gays just among Madonna's back-up dancers.

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
It people aren't thinking clearly... FIrst of all Hatton has always been more popular than Mayweather, but never this popular. Oscar has always been more popular than Mayweather but never this popular. Due to Mayweather's controversial bravado/asshole persona people want to see him get his ass kicked and thats what makes these fights bigger than Mosley-Cotto, Calzaghe-Kessler, etc. Was Mayweather the main draw for either fight? No, but he has increased his own public persona, and he has increased boxing's standing. I think while Hatton in terms of popularity peaked in this fight, and Oscar probably did in their fight that Mayweather will individual continue to grow in popularity if he continues to fight the big names. Enough people know Mosley just from his fights with Oscar, and enough people are starting to know Cotto, and he has a huge following in Peurto Rico, People will be following Paul Williams in the time to come once he faces a real opponent(fuck you MArgarito fans ;P), and Pacquaio is coming up maybe to 140 who knows what could be done at a catch weight of 140 or 144 between these two. Mayweather looked smaller than Hatton who gets down to 140, and I think that Mayweather could as well.

Thats actually 1 in 60 mate :-[
Sorry to be the annoying cunt to correct you lol..but that kinda makes it more feasible doesn't it? I mean I can believe 1 in 60 bought it..There were people I never would have thought of that bought it. I even got my girlfriend interested by getting her to watch 24/7..she stayed up until 5 to watch it lol.

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
That many people saw Hatton head butt the ring post? Nice
-
Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
Roy Jones jr. nor HOpkins were that big of ppv fighters, Hopkins had big fights against Trinidad and Oscar, but esides those he didn't exactly get huge numbers. Roy only got huge numbers a few times and though he was bigger than Mayweather before this year he certainly didn't draw over a million buys except maybe for his heavyweight fight.

I'm 90% sure I understand the point your making. My counter point is that the numbers are huge because all the UK money is being poured into one or two fights and not divided up between a surplus a PPV's.
If that makes sense. If it doesn't someone slap me across the teeth for my foolishness

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
I also know I watched the fight because of Ricky, been watching him for years and still say he's the best!!!! I am an American but I know a great Boxer and one heck of a Man when I see one.. We had a whole house full of women watching him and planning a trip to support him in person at his next Fight.
P.S. It takes a Big Man to Cry and even Bigger to Admit it. We Love ya Ricky

What do you consider a "legit world champ"? A guy who has one of the big three (or four) belts at each weight or a guy who's considered the "man" at his division, for example Mayweather at 147, Pavlik at 160, Calz at 168, etc.?

As someone stated above, its only 1 in 60 of uk citizens bought the fight based upon these figures. You might think this is unbelievable still but remember 1 billion people watched arsenal-man united in a normal english premier league game a few months back, thats 1 in 6 people in the world. We create the most exciting sports events in the world and people tune in and thats a fact. Maybe thats because our sports dont just beat everyone in america alone and then consider themselves world champions...but maybe im digressing...

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
WOuldnt suprise me that the PPV figures were huge. ONe of my old uni mates is an Indian lass with absolutely zero interest in sport and she sent me an email saying that she ordered the fight hoping that Hatton would win ! Lol I didnt even expect her to know who Hatton or Mayweather was.

Sky is in 6 million house holds, 1.2 mil is 20%, it's feasible and extremely impressive.

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
theres a big difference in price tho
in the UK the cost was like 15 pounds, in the US it was like 50 USD and for the HD i THINK it was like 60 USD

Re: PH MY GOSH-HATTON DID 1.2MILLION IN THE UK?!?!?!
CC..thats what I've been saying. floyd acts like he's the draw and he's the money maker so everyone should do it his way. He fought DLH and Hatton, both mainstream draws and that is the reason he made money. He says Ricky should be happy he gave him a chance when in reality, he should be kissing Rickys ess for giving him an opportunity to make money like that instead of fighting in half empty arenas with people walking out halfway through the fight like in the Baldo fight.

Well its about fucking time we got something cheaper than the US ;D
