Reviewing The No Mas Fight.
I was just watching Roberto Duran Beyond The Glory, And just before the fight Duran's team actually wanted to post prone the fight because Duran wasn't in good shape. I also see some training clips and his coordination on the speed bag was terrible and he looked really uninterested. Duran said himself he went up to 230 pounds before the fight which is quite unbelievable. Plus even Leonard said himself he wanted to have the rematch as soon as possible because he see Duran's habits of putting on 40 or 50 pounds, whats everybody's take on this ??

Leonard- smart man. Duran had every ability to not behave like he had between prior fights and been in just as good a shape as in the first match.

Leonard danced and Duran just couldn't land and hardly got close.
The man quit through sheer frustration at being hit by the lightning punches of Sugar Ray without being able to sustain any kind of pressure.
Leonards gameplan was to frustrate Duran by being constantly mobile and it worked.

I watched Duran-Hearns before, that was brutal. Hearns fast combinations with that much power was just too much for him. Sheer beating he lay upon him

Leonard did not hurt Duran...it was exactly that...Duran was frustrated...He wanted to fight and Ray wanted to box...Duran could not catch up with him and was plain out frustrated....you can even look at his face when he says it to the ref.....kind of like..."Well if this F**** is going to dance around all night I ain't chasing his ass down to fight...so the hell with it"...

Yes i know this but do you think it was anything to do with Duran's habits as well ?? i heard he had to go see a doctor before the fight. I think Leonard was smart at picking his fights.

It was scary to think he was a welterweight once upon a time. I tell you what he would have beaten Floyd at welter or lightmidldle to be honest.

In the 1st fight Leonard tried to fight Duran's fight and brawl with him and match him for strength - it didn't work so in the rematch Sugar Ray Leonard fought to his strengths and Duran couldn't match them.
I think over the two fights Leonard proved more as he may have lost the 1st fight on points but he showed he had heart and could rough it-up while Duran wasn't able to adapt in the rematch or even compete when Sugar fought his usual way.

Very true it was close though it was Leonard who was dictating the action and controlling the pace of the fight for the most part.
Duran's training habit's have often been question - I watched a video of him sparring Nigel Benn around 1988 and he looked awful but did win the fight he was preparing for (Iran Barkley).
I have never read anything to suggest there was anything physically wrong with Duran at the time of the 2nd Leonard fight - I put it down to pure frustration.
Duran simply had problems with good technical boxers who had quick feet as his loses to Benitez and Laing after the Leonard fight indicate.

Judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage was 68-66 68-66 67-66, this is a close fight so what ever was going through Duran's mind as to his quitting can only be answered by him. My guess is Frustration and he knew his conditioning would fail him in the later rounds, either way he embarrassed himself that night and left a black mark on his record.

I heard that Duran had stomach cramps and he didn't feel up for the fight.

Leonard and his team knew that Duran was walking around at over 200 after their first fight so they made sure to schedule it as soon as possible and Duran wasnt about top turn down the money. As for the fight, Duran was undertrained and he knew he was weight drained and in bad shape. Duran wanted to fight the way he had always fought in the past, but when it wasnt working he got frusterated and Leonards clowning put him over the edge imo. I think the media was too hard on him because they made it seem like he didn't want to fight, but in his mind it was Leonard who did not want to fight.

Like when SRL made him look silly i mean Duran was a real dick towards him. I give Duran all the credit in the world fo beating SRL but if SRL boxes he will beat Duran and that why he boxed.

Yeah you kind of see Duran pointing to Leonard and shrugging his shoulders like SRL didn't want to fight. That was the best win for SRL. (IMO)Completely took Duran out of his rhythm in the later rounds, and Duran knew it wasn't gonna get any easier from that point on trying to catch him.Kind of a childish way out but hey he's Duran he gets a pass on that one.

I think that people should realise how great Leonard was. Without any question, he was the best fighter of his generation, and always found a way to beat the best around. He'll never be appreciated like Hearns, Hagler and Duran by some people because he was never a murderous puncher, but he's got a good chance of being in the top ten of all time before the others.

I always knew how great he was, I just never liked him personally. I always root for the villians and he was too American Pie for me. ;D He truely deserved the name Sugar. After seeing that Benitez thread, I gotta say I think SRL should pay for his care. Because he put some serious hurting on Benitez that night. Benitez was a true warrior in that fight. Hey whats a few thousand to a multi-millionare.

If you see Duran's documentary, Duran said himself he called Leonard all the names he could. So Leonard would come and fight him he had to get inside Leonard's head which he did in the 1st fight, sadly for Duran the tables turned in the rematch. Although Duran wasn't in the best of shape for that fight.

ino it aint directed at me but I honestly think SRL would of won had he chose to box in the 1st. Duran had that in his character he was sooo proud he couldnt bare to see SRL get in and out....he was really struggling to get in range and therefore couldnt fight his fight which mentally he couldnt take. I think thats something he would of alwasy struggled with had SRL boxed in the first.
