Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
NEW YORK – DiBella Entertainment and Brave St. Productions are proud to announce the television premiere of “Magic Man” as it will air exclusively on SHOWTIME, Dec. 30 – Jan. 4. The documentary film chronicles the ascent of perpetual underdog Paulie the “Magic Man” Malignaggi, a scrawny kid from a broken home who, in quest to prove his life was worth something, defeated all odds to arrive at the Mecca of boxing (where is this) one big upset away from proving everyone wrong. It’s a story of disappointment, determination, of stamina and salvation.
The film produced by Lou DiBella and Brave St. Productions, traces Malignaggi’s difficult upbringing as the child of Italian immigrants struggling to find his path in life in America. The story follows his start in amateur boxing from his time at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn and chronicles the trials and tribulations of his first world championship bout against Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden and the ecstasy of winning his first title one year later. The film provides an original and poignant illustration of the literal blood, sweat and tears in the life of a boxer.
“Magic Man” first premiered at the Hoboken International Film Festival in New Jersey, where a rough cut of the film won the 2007 Audience Award. The film will be televised for the first time when it airs at 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, December 30 on SHOWTIME 2®. The documentary will continue to air leading up to Malignaggi’s next title fight, which will be televised live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
“I am very happy SHOWTIME will be airing ‘Magic Man’ as it will allow fight and movie fans to see the type or person Paulie is both inside and outside the ring,” said Lou DiBella. “The multiple airings throughout the first week of the year will be the perfect lead-in for Paulie’s title defense on Saturday night, January 5.”
Russell Best, partner and executive producer of Brave St. Productions adds, “I’m so proud that Showtime thought enough of our freshman feature doc to air it and allow everyone everywhere to be able to see this fascinating person, this beautiful and poignant "real life Rocky" story unfold.” “Anyone who watches Magic Man will have a new perspective on Paulie and realize the sheer and brutal tenacity that it took for him to overcome major life obstacles and fulfill his dreams of becoming a champion,” said Tammy Leech, partner and executive producer of Brave St. Productions.
Malignaggi (23-1, 5 KO’s) will defend his title against Herman Ngoudjo (16-1, 9 KO’s) at Bally’s Main Ballroom in Atlantic City on January 5. The fight is presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Groupe Yvon Michel. Tickets priced at $250 and $125 are now on sale and can be purchased at the Bally’s Box Office, by calling DiBella Entertainment at (212) 947-2577, Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420 or by visiting

Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
So they are making a new episode of "Growing up Gotti"? Didn't that show get cancelled a couple years back?
-
Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
Can't wait to see his fight on the 5th, we will see if he really deserves a shot at the Hitman

You ever see that footage of Spadafora sparrin Mayweather? DAMN! Paul handled himself very well. I was extremely impressed.

Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
.....yes I have seen it....I also saw Leo Dorin totally whip Paulie's ass and then I saw Leo get jobbed on the scorecard.
One of the fighters I always wanted to see KO'd is Spadafora

Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
I saw it, and I must say it was put together well. Its more of a propaganda film than documentary, really almost a stroke fest...lol. But he's apparently a hard worker and you get to see what kind of heart he's got fighting with injuries. I liked the sound track and they had a lot of good footage of the Cotto fight build-up.

Seems weird to me that a documentary about this little douche bag was even made. WHY? To hype his next fight? Who cares about Paulie Malinaggi? I can think of 100 fighters more deserving of a documentary being based on them than him. ???

Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
Is a bit odd why they felt the need to make a documentary on Paulie, can't see it drawing big ratings, doesn't even seem like many boxing fans were interested but guess they can show whatever they want to show.
-
Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
It's worth a peek, I give it a thumbs up. The main objective of this film is to change your mind about Paulie being a feather-fisted poof. ;D When you see what his hand was like , you may even give the guy some respect. Plus the heart he showed in the Cotto fight.

Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
yea its probably gonna show that hes like involved in the mafia..lol

Re: Paulie Malignaggi Documentary on Showtime TONIGHT
Paulie Maligotti fahgetaboudit.
-
Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
What has he done to have a documentary made about him?Showtime must sure have alot of faith in him!
-
Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
I guess they think he has a backstory worth telling.
I'm really looking forward to watching it actually, I've been searching the torrent sites but no luck as of yet.
I really don't see why you object though, he's an All American fighter, flashy, why wouldn't they do a documentary on him.
The BBC have made several Amir Khan documentaries in the last couple years so why not Paulie?
You forget that America is a nation like any other and so they like to cover their own up and coming fighters.
I'm sure Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Nonito Donaire and Christian Mijares all get documentaries about them in their own countries so why moan about America doing one one of their most exciting new talents?

I maon because it's PAULIE MALIGNAGII. We are not talking about a superstar here. His biggest claim to fame is getting his face destroyed and put together via surgery thanks to the fists of the Caguas Crusher. And there may very well have been Margarito/Cotto etc docs on but I have not seen any picked up bu Showtime.Have you? I thought not.

Come on Gamo, Paulie gave Cotto his toughest fight, they say. ::**

Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
well i doubt the documentary is about pauli changing the face of boxing...Seems more about coming from a broken home, and what he went through to be where he is.

I agree with you on this, El Gamo.
I'm not sure why they picked him to showcase. It may as well be on Lifetime or some other fem channel because no one outside of boxing knows who he is. It could be a work of fiction and have the same "punch."
-
Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
No-one has heard of him in the mainstream but he's got an interesting story, i think it's more too raise his mainstream profile rather than for us hard-core fans.

lol. I was thinking the exact same myself.
Out of all the boxers past and present to do a doc on that choice was certainly out of left field.
EDIT: 100 POSTS, I can finally cc/sc ;D Have my first cc El Gamo for reading my mind :)

Well what other Showtime American fighters are there for them to cover? Remember most of the other big name American boxing stars are on HBO what bigger young American stars does Showtime feature?
It's no different to the BBC putting out documentaries on Amir Khan when they have coverage to his fights. They obviously wouldn't make a documentary about a non British fighter and they wouldn't make a documentary about a British fighter who they didn't have a license to show their fights. Note how most of the Hatton Mayweather buildup was on Sky rather than the BBC for example as Sky had rights for the fight not the BBC.
Paulie is currently a Showtime fighter, he's young, all American, he's flashy, and a world champ, and a potential money maker for them and is fighting next week.
A documentary makes sense to me, it's no difference to the 'No average Joe' doc before Calzaghe fought Sakio Bika I guess.

Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
Lou DiBully already had all of this set up. He thought that Paulie was going to beat Cotto and so they were already working on this project before his fight with Cotto. I think Lou has the hots for Paulie.
Anyway.. I heard this documentary was nothing but bullshiet. But why would anyone glorify someone for getting their @ss kicked by a weight drained, unintrested, chinny, one dimmensional, slow, stupid, plodding, who gets hit too much, robot, tailor made fighter?
LMAO!
I too, have looked for this documentary on the net and it is no where to be found. Not even the main boxing sites who have great fights to offer, have this documentary available. Shows me they are not interested in this stupid documentary either and or have seen it as a complete bullshiet bogus lie-propaganda film.

Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
Heh, you either love or hate the guy, I gotta love it, he's a character and boxing needs that. He does sell lots of tickets in NY tho you can deny that. He fought alot of fights with a injury, and he brings great speed and boxing ability to the table. He's a hard fight for anyone. The more I see of him the more I like him.
-
Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
I caught it last night it was decent...

You've completely missed the point Gamo, Showtime is an American broadcasting network so why would they make a documentary about a non American fighter? When was the last time you watched a BBC or ITV made documentary about Bernard Hopkins or Roy Jones Jr or Floyd Mayweather?
That's right, we don't make documentaries about non British fighters in this country because we are British!
Paulie is a hot young AMERICAN talent, he's the best young AMERICAN talent currently being show on SHOWTIME an AMERICAN channel. So if they are going to make a documentary about an AMERICAN SHOWTIME fighter he is the clear an obvious choice.
They wern't making a documentary to broadcast to the world. It's no different to Fox Network in Australia putting out a documentary about Anthony Mundine or Danny Green, I'm sure they have made a bunch.
I just can't see what you are objecting about. I guess if ESPN made a documentary about an AMERICAN ESPN fighter you would object to that too? ::**
Excuse the capitals buddy but I've clearly got to break it down for you. :P

.....how can you hurt your hands when you never hit anyone and ESPECIALLY when you never hit anyone HARD!
-
Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
Paulie Malinaggi documentary title options
He's a backstreet boy that you can punch
Paul Spadafora with hair gel and highlights
He's super thanks for asking
Paulie Malinaggi is obviously being hyped up to fight Ricky Hatton or someone like that
-
Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?

Why should I like him? He's a loud mouthed Yankee!
I don't mind he actually throws SOME punches but he doesn't usually make anyone pay for missing him...I think he would give Ricky a good hard fight, if he lasted with Cotto then he's last with Hatton

Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
Ok i guess i came on a strong it your right not like a fighter i wanted to know why and i guess that is a good enough reason.

....it's not your fault, I just really get annoyed by him....his style wouldn't be so bad if his attitude and just over all style as a person was better.
But you show up to a fight with a New York Yankees emblem on your trunks it's pretty much a given I'm going to hate your ass
Also what feather fisted defensive specialist says they will knock everyone out....am I mistaken that he said he would stop Cotto???? If I am, then sorry but if I'm right....then that is the stupidest shit in the history of boxing

Re: Why the heck is there a documentary about...Paulie Maliginaggi?
I never really read the build up i just watch the fight if he said that then yea it was stupid thing to say good point cc.

I never really saw the appeal of this kid. He's not very exciting, he's horribly obnoxious and he looks more like something out of a gay pop-up add than a boxer.

They had planned on it bieng so hard for cotto to make weight that he would tire badly late in the fight and he would get the stoppage.. On top of that cotto had looked very chinny in a few of his last fights at 140..
But of course we know cotto is not in fact chinny.. He took bombs from judah and pinpoint attack from sugar shane.. Just weight drain will do strange things to your legs..
P.s
The film was not made by showtime..
It was produced in part by Lou DiBella and had been worked on for quite some time..
It won an award at the hoboken film festival and with paulie going back to showtime they wanted to show it i guess..
Let me know if its anywhere on the net or anything as i have yet to see it
