Could this be a way to tell if you are hitting harder?
I once heard that if you ball your hand into a fist, and punch the palm of your other hand, that depending on how loud it is, you can tell if you are hitting hard or not. I don't think this is true. After a workout, I can punch my palm and it will sound loud, but most of the time it won't sound that loud, whereas all the kids and school can do it and it will sound very loud. Anyonek know anything about this?

No thats not true at all, you need the help of someone who knows what they are doing, get them to take you on the mits, they will be able to tell if your punching power has increased.

Man this has to be the biggest load of crap ive ever heard. I always tell by punching the heavy bag.

Re: Could this be a way to tell if you are hitting harder?
that's a load of shit m8 Â ;) the only reason a punch will sound load is because air is getting trapped in your hand, so it only depends on the shape of the hand that you're punching
PS.
you probably have a much harder punch than your mates  ;)

Using the heavybag has its flaws, for one you really want to be hitting harder so you can fool yourself into thinking you are, also how do you assess it? how far the bag swings? the sound it makes?
The only way (unless your an active fighter who starts knocking people out but previously couldnt) is to get someone else involved and have then assess you over a period of time doing the same drill.
Every one of us is guilty of overpraising our work, without the help of a third party there is always the risk of thinking "Ive been at it a while now, I must be getting better\stronger\faster etc etc"

I figured it was, but I was just making sure. But you can't always tell by hitting the punching bag, either. I've noticed when I hit the bag, the dents on impact have gotten a bit bigger. Also, when I hit it really hard, the bag shakes from up to down.

Your bag will get softer over time so dont take that as gospel, getting someone to hold the bag for you over a period of time would be more accurate IMO.

you know on rocky 4, when ivan drago punches that pad thing and it tells him how hard it was, do any gyms have them because i have never seen them???

Re: Could this be a way to tell if you are hitting harder?
Something like it has been used before, I believe Frank Bruno was tops, I would imagine its all very nice to know that you hit with alot of poundage, but it doesnt really carry into a fight situation.

They're probably expensive as hell.

I just figured in sparring and your sparring partner says "Hey you hit hard" then I was hitting hard. Either that or seeing the way people react to being hit by you

Re: Could this be a way to tell if you are hitting harder?
i don't agree with that, nearly anyone can hit hard but when you've got someone pounding you in the face it's not so easy :boxing:

Dont agree with what exactly?

Re: Could this be a way to tell if you are hitting harder?
doesn't matter, i think that i missread lyle's post, sorry about that ;)
but i don't think that knowing you have a hard punch really helps you in a fight, it can get your confidence up but it can also make you too cocky, which i really don't like

Re: Could this be a way to tell if you are hitting harder?
If it gets to the stage that you rely on your big punch then yes, but knowing you have it in your locker is a good thing, it means theres no need to rush or panic if you are behind on the cards.

yup, samething with me. I just tell by when i hit the opponent or whoever I'm sparring and then after they tell me that i have a powerful punch.

In a fight, I always assume the other person is better than me, and that will keep me from getting to careless and cocky, and will also keep my expectations lower (I won't be as upset if I were to lose), and usually leaves me pleasantly surprised if I win or do better than I thought I would. :)
Also, you can have a punch like a sledgehammer, but you want to be able to throw a lot of them at one time, or it won't do you any good. Speed kills just as well as power, if not more.

Dont think about losing, if you lose, or in this case dont contest the mental battle your as good as beat before you start.

I don't think about losing, but I don't think about winning either. I assume the other person is in better shape than me, and that I'll have to fight extra hard if I'm going to win, when most of the time, I am the one that's in the better shape. 8)

means nothing, 99% of guys have glass jaws... :P Maybe a bit harsh but you get my point, its down to their opinion and how well they take a punch.
