Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Meldrick Taylor = Some People may hate me for this choice, but for the talent he had he didn't achieve nowhere near what he should have.
Tyrell Biggs
Henry Tillman
Leon Spinks
David Reid
Paul Gonzales
Audley Harrison

I never thought Harrison was much too be honest mate. And no i don't think he has a chance at all of becoming World Champion he has got serious faults which no trainer can help him with.

Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Audley Harrison without doubt and to some degree I actually feel sorry for him but in a funny way
-
Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Hes old and its over for him. The only remote chance he has of winning a title is if Skelton beats Chagaev and then skelton defends against fraud and somehow he beats him. But Skelton would knock fraud out anyway.

Great call on these ICB.... All had loads of talent but surpsingly did not do well as pros.
I will say I'm not big on the amateur boxing but I know these because they either fought some opponent I know and or they were pretty big stories.....
Mohamad Abdulaev - More famously know for qutting against Cotto. (Whom he beat as an am.)
Howard Davis Jr. - God was he talented, had a decent career but not what one might have thought he would have.
Michael Carruth - Irelands 1st boxing Gold medalist started off well had a slip then bounced back got a title shot in the 90's but lost.
István Kovács - I think he was a gold medalist... I know he was a great amateur.
Rey Mercer - Aside from the WBO title and the wins over Tommy & Whiterspoon theres nothing much that he did.
Lazlo Papp - I know of him cause he's in the IBHOF but for being a 3 time medalist and having a 27-0 career with NO major I wouldn't call it disappointing but not what one would have expected I'm sure of Papp.
Pete Rademacher - More famous known for fighting Floyd Patterson and the World Title on his 1st fight.
*Was Frank Tate a gold medalist? If so him too. ;D
**And if all of them aren't gold medalist well then ignore my post. :P
Also is it just me or does Hungary produce some of the best amateurs around? I know people say Cuba.

I think it's somewhat 50/50 cause although he was able to capture a title and sucessfully defend it he didn't have any BIG wins.
I guess it is.... I don't know.... :dontknow:

I was thinking about his earlier, they do produce a lot of good amatuers. So do Kazakhstan. Please, no Borat jokes.
I know his career is not over yet but Andre Ward's career has been a let down so far.

Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
I think Im right wasnt Joe Frazier the 1st oylimpic Heavy champ to win the world Title
-
Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Yeh, Frazier was. But Ingemar Johannssen could have been. His chance was robbed from him when he was dq'd for "not giving his best" in the olympics final.
-
Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Bernard Taylor was a big disappointment. He didn't fight for gold because of the 1980 boycott of the Soviet Olympics. He had an amazing amateur record but bad luck at the top as a pro.

Mick, I may be wrong but I think the Hungarian officials played a part in his (Papp's) Career and forced his retirement.Something along the lines of Violating there countrys socialist Principles? He was in line to Fight Giardello for Middle Title. Most likley afraid he would loss and Their propoganda would take a hit at height of Cold War LOl
Throw Olympic 'greats' that were not: Andrew Maynard & Kelcie "Timber" Banks. (dont know if he won a medal though)

He was such a decorated amateur though, pro career didn't quite live up to it.

Did Francisco "Panchito," Bojado win a gold??
I'm not sure, but in the few times I've seen him fight, he looks real good and has the skills...... yet he still loses :-\

I think Breland is considered a disappointment because he was seen by many as the biggest star of that Olympic team, and then he ended up getting totally outshined as a pro by Whitaker and Holyfield.
If no one else from that '84 team had become a champ, then Breland's career might not be looked at as such a disappointment. But Whitaker and Holyfield went on to have first-ballot HOF careers.

Nah! he didn't win gold.
But there sure was A LOT of hype around him when his career started.

Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Who's a gold medalist who went on to a successful pro career in the last decade?
-
Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Not just in the last decade but overall
Wladimir Klitschko
Ray Leonard
Floyd Patterson
Muhammed Ali
Vassily Jirov
Joe Frazier
George Foreman
Lennox Lewis

Very few, and the biggest reason is because the Cubans have dominated the Olympics, and they're prevented from turning pro, unless they defect.
DLH won gold in '92, Wlad in '96, Povetkin in '04. Those are the recent guys who have won gold and had good careers (or in Povetkin's case, he has the potential to have a good career).

Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Tyrell Biggs was a natural , who showed flashes as a pro to what he could have been but then fizzled out at World level..
Audley Harrison has a lot of very good skills , but hasn't the heart to fight in the deep trenches..
Felix Savon, The dissapointment with this one is that he didn't give us the chance to watch him fight as a pro against some of the fighters half as good as him, that won pro championships..
Henry Tillman .. just sad that he never nearly aspired to win big fights at championship level.

Wladdy
Lennox
Jirov
Henry Maske
Ali

Michael Spinks
Brahim Asloum
Nin Benvenutti
Casamayor
LaBarba
If some of these aren't gold medalist excuse me as amateurs is not my thing.
Since were on the subject what's the name of that one amateur that kicked Amir Khans ass in the amateurs?
I saw the fight a few weeks back for the 1st time. But can't remember his name?
I know hes Cuban so I take it thats why he never turned pro.

CC#4 on me Bigcat... Welcome aboard the Saddo Express. 8)
You've just come across the best boxing site on the planet. ;)
Protect yourself at all times and come out swinging. ;)
Great call on Carruth, I mentioned him on the 1st page I only know about him due to the big story but even bigger fall that he had.
From being Irelands 1st to not doing anything with it.

Not many really most of the Gold medal winners, in the last decade have only had a handful of fights or didn't even turn pro but Brahim Asloum comes to mind he won the WBA Light Flyweight title recently.
-
Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
The man who comes to mind for me is Wilbert "Skeeter" McClure. He was one of the most accomplished amateur boxers out of the US winning a gold medal in the 1960 Olympic team along with Muhammad Ali and Eddie Crook Jr. Skeeter had a decent pro career fighting Ruben Carter twice (one draw, one contraversial dec. loss) he was also twice on the losing end against Luis Manuel Rodriguez, but he was a great fighter in the amateurs.

Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
I just recently had the pleasure of meeting 'The Bronx Bomber' Alex Ramos who was and outstanding amateur of the 70's.
He was a 4 time New York Golden Gloves champion 4 yrs. in a row. With an amateur record of 143-9 and he was trained by the great George Benton.
Not a gold medalist but a very decorated amateur.
He lost against the big guys in the Middleweight Div. James Kinchen, Nunn, Mercado and Castro.
-
Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
Very True Mick, Alex Ramos is also doing a lot for the sport right now. He actually set up the petition for boxers pensions. Good guy for boxing.

The 2000 Gold Medal class may very well be the worst ever (or at least in recent times), when it comes to the subsequent pro careers. Asloum is the first world champ out of that bunch - winning the title in his 3rd attempt. It tells everything you need to know when Audley Harrison is probably the second most succesful pro among them!
Some of the other participants turned out okay though - Calderon, Viloria, Ponce de Leon, Narvaez, Sidorenko, Darchinyan, Katsidis, Cotto, Taylor, Bika, Sturm, Lacy, Diaconu, Erdei, Danny Green, Chagaev, Sultan and Samuel Peter among others.
The 2004 winners looks more promising with Barthelemy, Gamboa, Ward, Solis and Povetkin all undefeated and on course to make waves.

Yup, But Kahn got his revenge anyway.
I read in Boxing News that Kahn also beat Victor Ortiz in the ams.

Re: Olympic Gold Medalist's Who Were Disappointing In there Pro Career
I guess Howard Davis JR , he was voted the outstanding boxer of 1976 won gold and remember Ray Charles Leonard was in those Olimpics so he was expected to be a great pro also.
failed againest Jim Watt and got ICED in 1 by James McGirt.
