Setanta better than Sky
For the 2008 schedule Setanta is the official channel for boxing it has the major world title fights in Jones v Trinidad, Haye, Paquiau and some minor fights. It seems sky spent all their money on the Hatton fight and got nothing left. I know Setanta are doing it to get viewres and their broadcasting is second rate to Sky but at least they are showing the major fights. I have cancelled my Sky.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
Setanta are tapping in early to the new audience boxing is gaining in the alst number of years. And I agrre they show better fights than sky and usually have a better price.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
It's great Setanta are picking up fights that would never have been shown live in the past - N'yoyo-Powderpuff etc...
Sky are still showing the domestic stuff though.. which I sometimes look forward too more that "big" fights from across the pond

As a matter of interest what did you think of the Malignaggi fight?

I might cancel sky to be honest. It's far too expensive.
Setanta kick arse
Malignaggi was crap.....Hatton would eat him.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
Yeah i was happy with the fights setanta have got lined up...I can get it on free view as well plus premiership football. Can't go wrong really can you.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Yup, looking at the schedule they've got nine bills from the UK and the USA penned in between January to March, and for my mind that's great.
However, I do think that Sky's domestic boxing coverage is very good, and fights put on there are often more competitive than the one-sided affairs sometimes put forward by Sports Network.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
I agree re Setanta and their boxing coverage being better than Sky (at moment)
BUT what effs me off is their customer service - it's a bag of shit. Here's my exoperience with them so far. Would be interested to hear if any of you lot have had problems.
In the 6 months I have had Setanta I have had to ring them... :
- when they have taken their monthly subscription off me twice in a month >:mad
- once when they disconnected me. I had got a new credit card and got a letter from Setanta saying my payment had failed and could I contact customer services within 10 days to sort this. I opened another letter in the SAME POST ON SAME DAY saying I had been disconnected as I hadn't contacted them !!! >:mad
- AGAIN this month when they took the monthly payment off me twice again !! The idiot on the phone even said they hadn't though I was looking staright at it on my bank statement (have now set up a direct debit straight from bank account) - he said I would have to send photocopies in to prove it !! So I have now cancelled my direct debit (with my bank) and will have to contact Setanta to set it up again as next month the payment will fail :-\ >:mad
Add to this the fact you have to wait ages to talk to someone and that sometimes they just have a message saying that due to demand they are currently too busy please call back later, and you can probably see why I am very near to cancelling Setanta.
So even though yes they have great boxing shows is the stres and hassle and anger all worth it ?? I will give them one last chance. If anything goes wrong again with them then will disconnect for good.
Thinking about it in the ten years or so I have had SKY it's very rare that I have had to ring them with issues or problems.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
I don't think Setanta's service is actually great, I merely think their line up of fights is.
As regards coverage, quality and analysis it's Sky all the way.
And I hear ya on customer service.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
No chance would I cancel sky sports, I love all the domestic fights on there. I have been impressed with the amount of big fights from America Setanta have shown and like the look of their upcoming lineup of shows but the one main thing that pisses me off is that a lot of Setanta's coverage isnt live - we get a delayed feed and thats the main thing they need to sort that out this year.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
Yeah that annoyed me too, I started a thread here wher bzkfn and I asked people tosign a petition for it's improvement but the thread was tarnished and couldn't be sent.

Oh what was wrong? I think I signed it when it was up.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
HA hA a heap of pro setanta comments in the middle of a petition, showing the posters arguing.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Noticed Sky will be showing the Paul Williams fight which puts me in a dilemma. No still not subscribing back.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Any one showing Vasquez v Marquez III?
-
Sky showing Wladamir unification fight live. Very tempting I bet they get the Galzaghe fight too just to annoy me.

They have mate, they're screening Calzaghe v Hopkins live, check Frank Warrens website if you don't believe me.
-
Damn that means have to subscribe to Sky, I was savings some money by just sticking with Setanta. I wish Warren stayed with one company instead of prostituting himself to the highest bidder. Sky just content on showing the glamour PPV fights. It may come on the BBC or ITV a week later but do not know if I should take the chance. Dilemma.

Oh shit NO sorry mate I thought you were talking about Setanta NOT Sky.
Setanta are screening the Calzaghe v Hopkins fight along with Haye v Maccarinelli.
Sorry mate I totally misread the topic so you should stay with Setanta mate.
I would give you a CC to make up for my mistake but I can't unfortunately.

Actually just checked Sky's schedule and you can watch the HBO feed for Calzaghe Hopkins with them and also Pavlik Taylor rematch. But it's $49.95 each
Setanta have them both as part of their £7.99 a month broadband membership.
I'll stick with Setanta thanks.
-
I had a sleepless night because of what you said leftylee thinking of having to join Sky again. Lucky we have no sad clicks (only joking).
I did not know you could get HBO feeds through Sky, cost a lot though.
-
Gonna cancel my Setanta as they are shockingly amateurish and a bunch of crooks.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Setanta are poor in their coverage than Sky but for £10 per month they are good value compared to sky who are the robbers. You must be mad to stop subscribing to them at the moment. They are showing some great fights as this thread has illustrated including Woods v Tarver and now Galzahghe v Hopkins so until April I will be staying with them at least. They may even show Cotto fight which has Margareto v Cintron.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
I've been thinking about getting Sentanta just for their fight coverage. I live in Canada and boxing is not often on tv here.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Setanta have loads of channels here like Golf, Nascar, Horse riding you name it but their main channels here are Setanta 1 and 2 which show the boxing. I do not believe that they broadcast in Canada. But I could be wrong.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Setanta have Maccarinelli-Haye and Mitchell-Johnasson too, lucky for me I've got both Sky and Setanta ;D
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Have cancelled my Setanta Freeview. But after testing their Setanta Broadband I have subscribed to that. It's £7.99 and the stream is great (I have a 2mb connection). All Setanta channels are available through it and they have all their previous fights to watch instantly.
It streams Great.:)
I had to get it as I want to watch the Pavlik vs Taylor fight Live without using the unreliable sopcast.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Isn't Setanta up for sale? Sure I heard it on the radio in the last couple of days. Makes you wonder whether they haven't invested very heavily to quickly build up a share of the market and now need to cash in to balance the books. Caveat emptor.

Re: Setanta better than Sky
I hope you are wrong, whilst the commentary leaves a lot to be desired, they are really providing great value for money. I get mines with virgin cable for 3 for £30. Sky sports would cost me an additional £18 and the Paul Williams fight and Klitscko fight is not enough for me to subscribe back to them yet. Leftylee must be rich.

My Dad pays for it all ;)

Re: Setanta better than Sky
I've got both(I wish I was rich!) and have been annoyed with Sky and it's boxing coverage. Setanta is streets ahead in terms of it's matches shown.
I'm very close to cancelling Sky.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Welcome to the boards.
If Sky did show more world class fights then I would join back, but it has to be a lot more. £35 a month for mainly football is not worth it.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
Cheers, it seems alright this place? albeit 11 posts in!
Don't get me wrong, I like Friday Fight Night, but the big fights have mostly been on Setanta.
The recent domestic fights Sky have shown haven't been great either. The one where Mitchell fought the opponent, whos name escapes me was a joke. OK, there's nothing Sky can do about two other opponents pulling out for one reason or another, but boxing and football is what I shell out £35.
The return I'm getting isn't all that at the minute. Like I say, very close to getting rid of Sky.
-
Re: Setanta better than Sky
I am sure the Mitchell fight was on Setanta, remember Buncy talking his usual nonsense. They do have the next Mitchell v Johannson fight on Setanta as the under card to Haye v Maccrinelli.
The thing is when I stopped subscribing to Sky, I cancelled the lot and they have been making me offers to join back. I will if the fights are good. I get the feeling they will see that they are loosing viewers and will put some good fights on. They will be showing the Wlad fight and the Paul Williams would be good to watch but not at that cost. Although I used to subscribe to them for 17 years until January.
