Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
AJ Banal on the undercard. Ponce was offered the Gerry rematch but he is taking a break after an active 2007,in which he fought 4/5 times. Anyway,I'm just glad to see Gerry fighting,I am a huge fan of his counter punching skills and find him awesome to watch. I have 4-5 of his fights and want more!!
Banal is also a very good prospect.Good work from the Phillipines 8) 8)

At his age, Gerry boy shouldn't be wasting his time on cheap fights, but well, de Leon declined to fight and that's too bad cuz Gerry really wanted the fight. Guess it's the fight not worth the risk for de Leon.

It's his mandatory so he has no choice really. I don't think it's that,I just think Ponce really is tired and wants a break. If the $$$ is right, somewhere down the line,Ponce would fight him again and even though I'm a fan of Daniel's,I think Gerry wins the rematch.

Haha, my man Gamooo! I think you're just being kind to my boy. ;D ;) I'll give it 55-45 in favor of de Leon but Gerry's got everything to gain and nothing to lose in the fight, and so I really want this fight to happen than the pac-Hatton joke.

You bloody!!! I love you my man. The only pacfan who tells it as it is(65% of the time ;D ;) :D ) The Pac Hatton fight is foolish,Manny could beat most of the guys around 130 and 135 and be considered a legend there.
As for the Gerry-Ponce 2 fight,I honestly think if Gerry picks it up a little,he wins. ALOT of press row and some of my favourite and most knowledgeable boxing writers thought Gerry won that fight and he CERTAINLY landed the cleaner, more effective punches, but Ponce threw too many. Gerry took his power which was amazing to see!
Re: Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
2 vet's of the game going at it. Think this is a rematch, Gerry won then and he'll win now I just don't 'Sor V' wining this times passed for him and IMO hes out there just earning a living. It'll be a nice little pay day for him.

i'm surprised that YOU would think that. personally i would have it as a repeat of the first fight but gerry seems to be extremely keen on having that rematch so maybe he knows something we don't and i'm hoping it's just not about the money. yeah, he just might surprise us.
Re: Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
nice EG for mentioning my boy aj banal. watch out for this young prospect from the p.i.

Why are you surprised? I call it how I see it. I think if Gerry lets his hands go more and avoids Ponce's bombs/takes them as he did the first time,he wins.Remember,ALOT of knowledgeable writers had Gerry winning the first fight. They prefered his counter punching, which was harder, had more effect and cleaner than any of Ponce's shots. However,Ponce threw alot more.

it didn't really seem like he threw a lot more, anyone have the punch stats? I haven't seen the fight in a while but what I can remember is gerry winning most of the rounds but kinda slowed down with his countering at the later rounds. He did land some good shots that made ponce look bad that I can remember. What I dont remember is seeing ponce actually tagging gerry with anything to conclude he won the fight.
I think gerry will win this upcoming fight of his then hopefully ponce agrees with a rematch. I think ponce even said he was willing to go to the p.i to fight but I don't know why he suddenly felt like he needs a break. Its not like his been going 12 rounds a fight. Check out his past few fights, he barely broke a swet.

Heres the punch stats De Leon threw way more punches than Penalosa, he threw almost over 900 more punches than Penalosa, if my maths is right which it isn't always because my maths sucks :-\

Re: Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
Looks like he threw A LOT more and landed a bit more but gerry was a lot more accurate. ponce only landed 19% thats like missing for a whole round or two or three or four with as much as he threw of nearly 1400 punches. Gerry landed about 35% of just around 400 punches, that shows the difference in age imo. Ponce threw nearly a thousand more which is hard to believe really. When i have time I'll try to watch the fight again.

The punch stats are crazy that is quite unbelievable De Leon threw over 900 more punches than Gerry. To be honest though never really thought much of De Leon he is a devastating puncher, but he is very sloppy and he can be out boxed clearly by a well schooled boxer. In fact i think Steve Molitor would give De Leon a bit of a boxing lesson.
Re: Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
A solid match-up, Sor Vorapin is a tough experienced opponent but I don't think he'll trouble Penalosa too much. As for a DeLeon/ Penalosa rematch I think DeLeon wins convincingly this time! I am one who thought Gerry won the 1st fight but I just feel DeLeon will be more effective in a second fight.

i thought you'd go with ponce in a rematch cos you've been goin' about how you find it difficult to give gerry the decision with such a discrepancy of punch output in their first fight. so you think gerry could do better next around? personally i don't think so.

Yeah, that's the only reason why I would have given Daniel the W in the first fight,he threw and landed so many more BUT Gerry's punches were soooooo much more cleaner,he was more accurate and if you didn't look at the ko records going into the fight, you would think that Gerry was the harder hitter.
I think a rematch would be close and if Penelosa has 1 big weakness,it's that he just does not let his hands go enough. It would probably be his last big fight so I think he would give it his all and probably win.Man,Penelosa is 1 tough tough tough dude though.Has he ever been down in his entire career? I think I've read he's been down once!

i really don't recall any fight where he's been down before. you're right about the flaw in his game. he just doesn't take too many chances which is one of the reasons why he's so tough to take out. it's always been like that with gerry and has nothing to do with his age, that's why i don't think he can change anything this late in his career. but then you may be right, he might risk it all and try to go out with a bang in a swan fight with de leon. he'll try to win convincingly or i see him getting stopped for the first time. i hope he succeeds cos he seems to have a lot of confidence in clamoring for that rematch.

Man how the hell can you be a fan of Ponce de leons... He has THE most unattractive style of fighting that I've ever seen from a world champion. The guy is so fucking sloppy it's unbelievable.. I can't believe I sat through his last fight, ugliest prizefight I've watched in ages. I was begging for him to KO his opponent and get that fight over with, but it never even came close to happening, even though he throws for the fences and has wicked KO power. I don't expect Ponce will ever be in a great fight, it's almost physically impossible with how bad he is to watch. All he ever looks for is a one punch KO, and he either gets it, or you have an ugly fight. I thought Penalosa should have beaten him handily. Not to say I thought he did(thought it was very close and the scorecards were a complete joke), I mean he should have been more active and taken it to Ponce. Would like to see a rematch in the hopes that Gerry can really step it up and beat him down. However I would rather see Ponce fight the winner of Marquez Vasquez 3, just so I can see him get him ugly ass KTFO.

I totally understand what you are saying and the best part of your points is that it's true, when Ponce gets the KO,he looks superb, when he doesn't(which is not often) he all of a sudden becomes this volume puncher. I have seen about 12 of his fights and can say he has had some entertaining fights like the 1 v Caballaro(you should see that, although Ponce had his moments,he generally got his ass beaten and was swollen up), the fights with Sod Looknangymantoy or whatever his name was plus his fights with Seeger and guys of that ilk were interesting too. I don't find him boring at all except for his last fight,I actually think he's pretty entertaining to watch. He dam sure as heck has a horrible, horrible style though. Those wiiiiiide sweeping punches,no defence etc etc. but I find him interesting to watch. The guy has power heart and a chin too.
I'd favour the winner of the Rafa-Israel war over him for sure but we don't know how much those 2 will have left and if you are going to stand in front of Ponce,he is always going to have the chance to land the big punch,so imagine if beat either of those 2 :o :o
Re: Gerry Penelosa to defend v Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2
Yeah, I realize that Ponce has an abundance of power, and he is tough with a strong will. But that's really about it. The man MUST have anvils for fists... If he didn't have absolutely awesome power, basically any good boxer would step it up and take it to him, since he's so unbelievably slow and wide open. I suspect he just gains his opponents respect very early on with his thudding power, thus making them reluctant to exchange at all. I don't pretend to be an expert on the guy, I feel if I watched much footage of him in one sitting I'd start having bad thoughts. Your right though I should look for his loss, I'd like to see someone take advantage of how uncoordinated he is. This guy literally leaves me thinking I could be a world champion if he can.

Oh crap,CC for cracking me up. :D :D :D Some of those lines are classic!Track down the Caballaro fight.Although if I remember correctly,he won not only because of Ponce's wide punches but also because of the ridiculous height disparity. In fact,Ponce has said in an interview that he would not want to fight Caballaro again, because of the height issue. ;D ;D
