Anyone tipping Skelton to upset Chagaev?
I was looking in the BBC Sport forums and the general consensus is that Skelton is going to get annihilated.
I'm really not so sure. I'm actually considering a bold bet in the prediction comp on him upsetting Chagaev.
Everyone seems to be rating Skelton based on his one bad performance against Michael Sprott.
But that was probably his worst ever performance and he still won easiliy, apart from one blind judge anyways.
Chagaev beat Valuev fair enough but his record apart from that is hardly a stellar one.
Scraping a win over John Ruiz can hardly be considered as an argument for 'greatness'.
He struggled with Vladimir Virchis too.
Skelton imo is still unbeaten, the judges robbed him in the first Williams fight and he responded by dancing around him and winning virtually all the rounds in the rematch.
I don't actually see anyone better than Williams on Chagaev's record, unless you count Valuev and Ruiz :-X
When you add in that Skelton will likely outweigh his opponent by at least 20 lbs I think the rough house, brawling tactics of Skelton could really mess up Chagaev's gameplan.
I think Chagaev is the justifiable favourite but I really think Skelton has a live chance in this bout.
I'd say it's 60/40 in Chagaev's favour.

I dont like Skelton's chances of a points win in Germany......

Re: Anyone tipping Skelton to upset Chagaev?
He's by no means the favourite here and I do expect Skelton to get beat although I wouldn't consider it a huge upset if he did win. I wish him all the best and really hope he can pull it off - I'll definately have a few quid on him because I think he has a much better chance than the 6/1 odds on offer and theres a great deal of value to making that bet.
That being said my honest prediction is Chagaev by UD but still ....

There is not a 6-1 odd on this fight in any Casino, Bookie, or Side Parlor in this country.

These look like some UK websites that I have never seen before, looks like I need to bookmark them and save them for the future, but in the states the best I have seen was Skelton +350

Yeah both UK based I believe, have a look at www.oddschecker.com I usually check there before I place a bet to compare the prices on offer of most major bookmakers. Its amazing how big the difference can be, some sites are only giving 4-1 for Skelton.

Re: Anyone tipping Skelton to upset Chagaev?
6-1 is great odds. He has a far better chance of upsetting Chagaev than Hatton ever did of beating Mayweather.

Chagaev didn't scrape a win over Ruiz, but just won convincingly IMO...If Skelton had a blind judge against Sprott then the same goes for Chagaev-Ruiz meaning it should have been UD for Ruslan...
And yeah he struggled with Virchis as much as Virchis struggled with Chagaev...this was an incredible
boring fight with no fighter really trying anything...should have been a draw...
But he got a convincing (t)ko over Sprott, which you didn't mentioned...And considering that Skelton
apparently(I haven't seen the fight) struggled with Sprott thats a good thing...
I say Chagaev by decision or late ko...

When he fought Vladimir Virchis, Chagaev's mother had heart surgery one night before the fight. Chagaev come into the bout without sleeping for 24 hours so i think he done well considering how tired and how messed up he felt at that time. And he didn't scrap a win over Ruiz, he clearly beat Ruiz comfortably the SD was a joke Chagaev easily won the fight on points.
As for Skelton he has never impressed me, he is a tough mauling type of fighter i'll give him that but other than that he is pretty weak in most areas. He should of had about 2 points deducted in the 1st Williams fight he was so dirty in that fight and he was allowed to get away with far too much. And you talk highly how Skelton beat Williams easily in the rematch but come on, Williams was 288 he looked like a beached whale and Williams was even going off balance when he threw a punch thats how poorly conditioned he was. So Skelton out pointing an uninterested beached whale Williams didn't impress me one bit.
Chagaev isn't great but he is good enough to handle someone like Sprott, Chagaev will win a UD 117-111, 118-110, 117-111.

Sometimes Ice I just like to see a good guy come out ahead even if it is only for a short period of time....A guy in his 40's who did not start boxing as a pro until his mid 30's...Family man...good personality....Good for him....
Even if he did win..and more then likely he won't...it would stir things up for a minute...give a chance for someone else to get in the mix...or better yet...he would want to cash in on the biggest payday he could and possibly fight Wlad for his first defense...furthering the unification process...or even sultan if he beats Wlad...or Peter etc...help us get one champion or at least narrow down the amount we have at the moment...
IMO Chagaev is going to be a guy who sits on his title...fighting only when need be...and the worst possible opp he is allowed to

You can downplay anything Chagaev has done all you want... That doesn't make Skelton look any better..... Beating Ruiz and Valuev may not be great in the scheme of things, but both of those guys would EASILY beat Skelton... Putting anything on Matt is a suckers bet, he isn't going to win. No chance.

Re: Anyone tipping Skelton to upset Chagaev?
I doubt Skelton can win but the odds were so good on him that I put a cheeky tenner on him as Chagaev is coming back from a lay-off and an illness so there is a chance that he won't be at his best.
Chagaev is the type of fighter who can fight rough and brawl but also has the ability to change tactics and box. He's simply a better allround fighter than the 40 year old Skelton who will give it his all but I expect Chagaev to win maybe even force a later rounds stoppage.

Re: Anyone tipping Skelton to upset Chagaev?
Unfortunately just about everything points to Chagaev.
No matter what you say about him the guy was a world amateur gold medalist so there is basic ability there at the very least. Also he is a southpaw which will make him awkward. Matt will try and brawl with him but I have the feeling that Chagaev will just stay out of the way, use his jab and get like a 119-109 UD victory.
I want Matt to win but my head has to say it will not happen.

Re: Anyone tipping Skelton to upset Chagaev?
I think he will give his best effort ever but the judges aint going to be helping him at all and his best bet is to stop him. He knows this is his last ever shot at a title and if he loses its over, maybe this will boost him. I wish him luck but I dont think he will beat him.
