Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
I would like to mention here one boxer from my home land, Puerto Rico:
Juan Laporte: 40 (KO 22), lost 17, fought names such as Julio Cesar Chavez (53 - 0), Wilfredo Gomez (40-1-1 (40 wins by KO, first Gomez win by decision)), Eusebio Pedroza, Rocky Lockridge, Salvador Sanchez... These are all time great boxers, great KO power (and there are others in the list) and Laporte NEVER visit the canvas. I do not think that many boxers (if any) can say this, facing this kind of opposition. This is one of the greatest chins in boxing history, and had great battles with these names. One of my favorites was his fight with Chavez, and his KO win over Lockridge.

I remember LaPorte. Kostya Tszyu also whipped his ass early in his career.

Amazingly it was only Tszyu's 4th fight as a Pro!

Vinny Paz wasn't "great" but he's good enough to be included i think :)

I'll try and stick to the great guideline heres some that have not been mentioned.
Manuel Ortiz - 2 wins shy of 100 ;) argueably the greatest Bantam ever.
Lou Salica - Yet another great Bantam
Hilario Zapata - IMO, Panamas 2nd greatest fighter
Santos Benigno Laciar - One of the greatest Flyweights of all time
Flash Elorde - All time Super Feather

Not that amazing if you consider that Laporte started his career in 1977 and fought Kostya Tszyu in 1992, when Laporte's prime was far, far away. I don't know if this is the only fight you have seen of Laporte, but definitely this is not the one to judge his merits in the sport. In addition, to the names I mentioned Laporte fought people as Azumah Nelson, Molina, among others. And, I am not taking anything from Tszyu because I was a fan of him also. But, Laporte proved to be a real warrior who lost most of those fights I listed, but presented a brave opposition, and also became World Champion. Try watching his fight with Chavez...

Early in Tszyu career, by the end of Laporte's career at a point where he should not be boxing. Keep going back in history to make a better judgement of Laporte.

Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
Benny "Kid" Paret what a warrior he was such a shame what happened to him.
-
Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
Roberto Duran didn't have over 100 wins did he?..because I'm sure he had around 19 losses and he's obviously one of the greats too
-
Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
My bad just checked his record 104 victories with 16 defeats lol...nearly!
-
Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
Johnny "the Entertainer" Nelson :-X ;D :-X

Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
I was half joking about Emanuel Augustus, but here's a name Ice missed - Carmen Basilio, for sure.
Augustus is probably the best fighter ever with 20+ losses and under 30 wins. I'm not sure there has ever been a guy with a 35-29 record, barely better than .500, who can give a top class fighter a hard time, even win, on any given night.

Micky Ward. He may not be great but he was GREAT to watch.
-
Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
ICE, Holyfield is on 9 losses. I thought of him too but Sultan gave him his 9th defeat. Holyfields gonna be there though if he doesn't take a hint and retire already! I hope he will now??
I was sure Arturo Gatti was handed his 10th defeat by Gomez but it was his 9th...Although most wouldn't consider him great, he was a former world champ.
Henry Cooper? Not a world champion but was around in a very tough era and gave Ali all he could handle.

Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
Ok,So there not all Greats but everyone could hold there own and most did much more......
Joey Maxim
Livingston Bramble
Beau Jack And Bob Montgomery (There round robbins together are enough alone to be Included)
Manuel Medina Before you laugh we all know he couldnt break egg's but had enough to compete with and beat some of the very best in his era.
Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Bivins
George Dixon (so it's written anyway)But if we excluded fighters because we have not seen them with our own eyes.....where do you draw the line???
Harold Johnson
Saoul Mamby was a great but hung around waaay to long and became the ultimate gate keeper.Think he's the only guy EVER to fight in 5 different decades ?

CC back. Johnson is such a throwback, late bloomer journeyman. A guy who kept active, kept improving and peaked late in his career. He deserves much respect.

Well said Rozzysean.Honest fighters like Johnson remind me why it is I love this sport. He was the victim many times over of seeing Impaired judges..(Kiwanuka,Sheika,Judah,etc fights) but has not lost a step.Deserves the constant respect usally heaped upon some champions.
Its early as far as predictions but Im picking him to upset Dawson over 12 dictated rounds.

Roberto Duran actually did this as well. Debut 1968, last fight 2001. 60'es, 70'es, 80'es, 90'es and 00's.

Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
not great but also like carlos baldomir
-
Re: Great boxers with 10 or more losses but less than a 100 wins
Guess its a bit different for fighters from many years ago as they had that many fights compared to today's generation so 10 losses or more doesn't look that bad.
In recent years I would have to say Johnny Nelson. Holyfield will overtake him shortly :-\ and then there's Duran
And let's not forget Rocky Balboa ;)

Good call. He's arrived at 10 losses recently. 91-10. Not too shabby!
