I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
I just watched Pryor Cervantes..Kim..Johnson and Kameda staurday... then tonight the second Pryor/Arguello bout again...Man I know I have said this before but he was a tough SOB!!!! Shit at 140 he may have been the toughest guy to ever lace the gloves...not the best boxer ever at 140 but the toughest to say the least... I don't care what anyone says he eats every 140lbr out there today or even the last 5 yrs alive...Including cotto...Just my opp...I don't expect everyone to agree but to fight him was like stepping in the street and having a back alley brawl...

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
I agree. Pryor would murder all the current 140 pounders. I would give Maliggangi, Torres, Witter and Hatton no chance against him. Pryor was a beast. Leonard avoided him for that reason.

Pryor Vs Mayweather at 140 would have been a 50/50 matchup in my opinion.

Good vid he was like an animal at times, specially when you caught him with a good shot :o
Who was he fighting when he went down and just rolled backards to his feet and started fighting again???

I think it was Akio Kameda....can't be guarenteed

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
Yeah, Pryor was one of the toughest guys I've ever seen and he was also supremely skilled. In the first fight against Arguello he takes a murderous shot in the 13th round that would have KO'd a lot of guys. It didn't even knock Pryor down. He then stopped Arguello the very next round. Amazing.
There have been a lot of great fighters at 140 - Meldrick Taylor, Julio Cesar Chavez and Kostya Tszyu. But I reckon Pryor beats all of those guys by stoppage except maybe Chavez who, in his prime, was impossible to stop. I still reckon he'd beat Julio handily on points.

I'd have it 60/40 for Mayweather but I agree with you, it'd be anybodies fight.
Pryor was sensational and it's a pity his drug problems prevented him from being a mega star.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
I always thought Pryor was one of the best Jr Welterweights of all time, i think he was just unlucky that all the top names were at Welterweight. Pryor was an animal in the ring i've never seen someone just run at you with a barrage of punches quite like Pryor, you should see his fight vs Lennox Blackmore he just tears him apart and when the bell rung he literally run across the ring at him. I also think Pryor has underrated boxing skills, he didn't use them often but when he did he had good skills, watch his fight 1st fight Arguello he had to change his style completely and turn into a boxer. Pryor stated in a interview that he couldn't beat Arguello just by coming straight forward and bombarding him with shots.
Also Pryor's life as a kid was pretty rough as well you should look up on the history of him its pretty interesting.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
Can you imagine Pryor Vs. Chavez at there best.Primal instincts abound there. You could make that one in a walk in closet.
Cervantes was brutal fight.Pryor bounced in the first and came back like a caveman.Pryor is one that those past fighters who the more you look back at, you stare that much harder.Honest fighter who left nothing to the imagination....except how much farther he could have gone.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
True Enough, Ice has always given Pryor his credit.
I always thought he was fantastic. A really rugged guy, who like many got tagged and retaliated in kind. However, the difference was he did it effectively. My first glimpses of Pryor was against my old favourite Alexis Arguello. The respect between these two men was immense and when I saw how Pryor withstood the previously irresistible force that was Arguello's power, I knew I was watching something special.
It is true Leonard avoided him...who needs a war like that when they're on the way up? A fight with Pryor would definitely leave an indentation on ones career and as I said Sugar didn't need that on his way up.
As for Julio Caesar Chavez v Pryor...Someone said a prime JCC was impossible to stop. Well I don't feel JCC was prime whilst at Junior Welter, I feel he peaked at Lightweight, although I still consider him a ATG Light Welter. And as for a bout with Pryor, I find it so tough to call, but I just give the edge to Pryor as he could take unbelievable punishment and still retaliate.
A fight that I always dreamed of was Pryor vs. Henry Armstrong.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
now dont get me rong, iv only seen his 2 arguello fights, but pryor yes he does look fantastic but to say hatton and kostya would have no chance seems slightly unfair i think, dontforget kostya is a 140lb legend and at hattons peak he beat him, and despite what i and many others think hatton may unify again.

Tszyu would get slaughtered by Pryor he lost to Vince Phillips in a bad way. Because Phillips swarmed Tszyu and didn't allow him to get punching room, could you just imagine what one of the best swarmer's of all time aka Pryor would do to Tszyu if Phillips done that to him ??

OK, Pryor was indeed a beast. But...was it because of coke? Or something else in that bottle? Doubt, not hate or negativity, will always be on my mind when I think of Pryor due to what happened that night. It's not my fault. I am simply speaking the truth and nothing but.

Well, thanks, I'll just toot my own horn and say it was a quality comment from me. Think about it. I'm not basing Pryors whole career on one bottle. Don't put words in my mouth (speak for yourself). I'm simply saying that when I think of Pryor's greatness, I do it with a raised eyebrow. I can't help but be influenced by guilt by assocaitaion. I need not mention the dishonorable and downright immoral and CRIMINAL behavior of Pryor's trainer, Panama Lewis, in his career. Nor do I need to mention Luis Resto. Because of this, whenever I think of the great Aaron Pryor, I can't help but have a speck of doubt in my mind. What's so wrong about that?

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
Thanks for a great post. I agree and disagree.
Yes, he was the toughest at 140, but he was also the best. Look at his record... ONE LOSS after a 2.5 year layoff, and he beat EVERY TOP PERSON at 140. Leonard did his best to win at JuWelt without fighting Pryor (just like Mayweather won a belt at 140 without fighting Cotto or Hatton).
I don't think he gets the credit he deserves... In 40 fights, one loss. In 40 fights only 4 decisions, and two of those came in his first ten fights. This means he KO'd all but three of the people he fought in his prime and after!!!
Name someone else who can claim this. Bad hands or not, PBF was never knocking people dead like Pryor--at any weight class.
If he was not the best boxer at 140, then who was?

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
As a fighter Pryor was a beast his style was at times barberic. He would be a handful for anyone from JCC to Tszyu.
As an all time great IMO he falls short due to a short career and quality of opposition. I've debated that several times and the Cervantes win was great, and the Alexis wins are good wins. But aside from that there isn't much to choose from. I will agree that he was plagued with quality of names being aroud at 140 it's obvious to see the big boys were at 147 why didn't he make is move to 147?
I will admit that I (on a personal level) will never credit Aaron for the Alexis fights.
I don't care what anyone tells me, not Pryor, not his fans, not people who were ringside.
There is NO WAY in hell 'ANYONE' could have tooken that right hand that Alexis landed in the 13th round. FUCK NO it's that simple....
Anyone who's REALLY seen Alexis career NOT just say "I have his whole career" or say "I've seen all of his fights"
Knows that the straight right hand was something special and anyone who took it flush that way almost never made it to the end.
I don't think Ricans comment was out of line and I also think he is entitled to post a comment anywhere he wishes to.
NO ONE HERE IS THE LAW AND NO ONE HERE CAN TELL HIM WHAT HE CAN AND CAN'T POST. NO ONE!!!!!
It's not like his post was offensive to anyone. Last time I checked this same person that's crying wolf was using this same line himself:
"I'm entitled to my opinion arent I?"
So much for that comment. ::**
Daxx would you not agree that if I made JCC Apreciation thread chances are the Meldrick Taylor fight will come up and Steele and King and Lou and he was beat by Pernell and LaPorte and on and on and on.
It's just the way it goes Daxx. Now I can def. understand that this is an appreciation thread and I see why it would bother you.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
Mick as you know I'm a big Arguello fan. Thats one of the reason I like Saddo's so much, when I arrived here I presumed like many fans in my locality, none would have heard of Arguello. Then I arrived and yourself ICB nad I believe Daxx too werre enthusiasts and interested in Alexis.
So as a fan you know that Alexis was not what he once was when he fought Pryor, he was winding down and although he put up a great effort he never quite fired at the optimum level he fired at in previous fights. So I do give Pryor some props for beating one of the greatest Gentlemen ever to grace the sport.
In relation to Pryor's opposition. There was a lack of availability in terms of stellar competition at the time at 140. However, Pryor on numerous occassions called out the best at a higher weight in SRL.
Supplementary to that I feel a tie to Roy Jones is adequate point here. Roy beat every guy he could in Middle and SMW. However it was not who he beat at these weights that make him memorable. It was the nature of his victories which make him great. Others say that Tyson's early opposition (pre-Holyfield) were poor and sub-standard for an ATG. However, he beat them so impressively that he will always be remebered for his early ferocity.
I feel Pryor should be treated with a similar allowance, He fought everyone who he could (or who was granted him the opportunity) and virtually demolished everyone put in his path. All credit to Pryor, maybe not an ATG because of his lack of skill polish and finesse but certainly a great LWW because of his sheer ferocity and will to win.

Because its the same thing in every Aaron Pryor thread thats all people say about Pryor is the black bottle incident. And its obvious he was doing to annoy people.

Pryor was a great fighter and one of the best Jr Welterweights of all time, if you don't like Pryor then don't post in a Aaron Pryor appreciation thread simple. If i don't like a certain fighter and its an appreciation thread i don't post in the thread its that simple, because i don't want to offend anyone who is a fan. And i know you was implying me about *the opinion* part but thats totally different. Because when im in a debate with certain people not in appreciation thread and both sides make good points then me or whoever im debating with are entitled to our opinions. But if someone comes into a appreciation thread to get a reaction and posts 3 times about the black bottle incident to annoy people on purpose even Daxx thinks the same then thats not an opinion thats called being an a** IMO. If you can't see he was being sarcastic and trying to get a reaction with those comments then im speechless.

You know i hate when people turn an Aaron Pryor thread into the Pryor vs Arguello controversy all the time. If you haven't got anything good to say about Pryor in a appreciation thread about him don't say anything at all.
ICB I knew there would be at least one guy who brought that up...or one guy who would base everything pryor did on his Arguello bouts

OK, Pryor was indeed a beast. But...was it because of coke? Or something else in that bottle? Doubt, not hate or negativity, will always be on my mind when I think of Pryor due to what happened that night. It's not my fault. I am simply speaking the truth and nothing but.
Yeah because his whole career is based on a bottle that may or may not have existed....always a quality comment from you
Well, thanks, I'll just toot my own horn and say it was a quality comment from me.
No see that where you are wrong..you never mentioned anything but the bottle in your post...and in the second post all you mentioned was coke...so from those two post it is fair to assume you are basing everything on the bottle...oh Im sorry and Coke...pay attention to your own post before you start a new one and talk....
Man, that Pryor was great, but that bottle (how can you "mix" water?), that coke, AND that trainer....I don't know....
When you get out of bed in the morning do you say to yourself "I wonder how I can be an asshole today?"
Why do I have to be an "asshole" simply for expressing an opinion that Saddoboxing has given me the right to express? You have some serious issues Daxx. Your comment was incredibly sophomoric. Even if you were angered, you should have shown more class dude.

After he had already commented on the thread about black bottle incident, he then says it 3 more times obviously being sarcastic and obviously trying to get a reaction.
Mick ICB pretty much sums it up...Hell I can care less if Rican or anyone else does not like Pryor or they do.....C'Mon now Mick you know me better then that...I am into a good debate on any fighter...I have argued my boy Lennox Lewis til I am blue in the face and will continue to...I don't get mad if people don't like him or do...He is the fighter I followed and supported...This was not really even an appreciation thread..I stated myself he is not the greatest 140lbr out there to ever compete he is was just an animal.....and you are right anyone can post anything they want to...that is what makes a forum quality...different opinions..especially this forum...and what I or ICB can not reply back to what Rican said?...It works both ways no?....BUT!!!! with that being said....
ICB nails it on the head...The comment was not made to debate...even from the first one where he said..
The bottle give me the bottle..the black one....it was made just to be a smart ass and get a reaction...it is not the first time he has done it...and not on threads I started...he like to get reactions...simple as that...except this time two people said something to him...nothing more nothing less....
Has nothing to do with making a statement Mick it has to do with the reason behind the statement..there is a difference....
There are only 2 reasons I ever make comments like I did to posters no matter who they are...
1- they are saying stuff just to get a rise out of people
2-they say something about someones country or race in the comment
I'll be as honest as I can be wit you Daxx, would it have not been anyone else here I myself would have mentioned the 'Bottle'.
But now that you clarify the Rican comment and why you feel he made that comment I see what you mean on Rican just posting it to stir things up I can def. understand that.
The other issue was that Rican was told if he didnt have anything good to say he shouldn't say anything at all.
Some people here wanna act like they're patroling the forum and posters need to go by his rules.
Ricans entitled to make posts if they are out of line I'm sure he will be contacted by someone here.
I just don't think it's right for anyone to tell someone 'Dont say anything' like if they are the authority here.
Suddenly I'm having flashes of a shit load of Ali threads where someone keeps getting in there and posting his routine over and over.
The same thing can be said about Ali threads they start off as appreciation threads and some how it turns into a 'Salt' debate and 'Gif Decisions'
Give me a break this a discussion board you don't agree with someones comment then overlook it and pay no attention to it OR you can reply and be ready for a debate. For the most part if I read something that I think is absurd I try to ignore it but there are the few occasions where some people are just out of line and need to be put in their place as some of you have seen.
Anyway.... Daxx all is well and I see what you mean about Ricans comment having the intentions to stir things up.
Peace,
Mick

I fully understand your point Mick and I agree 100%...But then again ICB is the one who made the comment on not posting anything not me....But again he stated that for the same reason I stated what I did...Rican did it to just stir things up and he has done it before...If not for the fact he has done it before ICB would have never posted what he did....we all know ICB and he is one of the last guys on here to ever get involved in a scuflle like that...he will ignore someone before doing so...
If you had said something about the bottle...it would have been taken as a joke because you have a reputation as a top quality poster and not a guy who stirs things up...you know the old expression Mick..you are known by your reputation....Rican has developed one as a guy who likes to stir things up so he brings hostility out....Then he is going to post above your last one about being diplomatic and all..having more class.....as if he is an innocent guy who does nothing and knows nothing why anyone would take his post in the wrong context...
I can understand your point in it all Mick but as we can all see Rican is going to sit back now and act as if he is Mr. Nice guy while all the long sucking it up the fact you are defending him...Even though I know and everyone else does as well you are defending the point of it all and not him in general....
Besides...I am not the one who said if you can't post something positive don't say anything at all...so how is it on my shoulders?......
one last thing...just to prove a point on Rican...When I made an apology thread about stuff I said in an arguement on here and admitted it was out of line...and had nothing to do with anyone in particular nor did I expect any response just an apology for getting out of hand...Rican who at that point I never dealt with before in a debate or responding to a comment of his...made it a point to post on the thread..
"There is Daxx being dramatic again"...had nothing to do with him just he felt the need to make a comment to stir things up....
I am done with all this...I still do not appreciate being blamed for a comment I did not make

I that the comments made about 'Not posting' where done by someone else but that someone else wont talk to me or as he said he wont debate with me. So I wont direct any comments as to not debate with him ::**
This is the 1st time I see this from Rican, I wasn't aware that Rican was this type of poster. Now that you've mentioned it I will def. look into this.
Daxx you know the score here and you and I have chatted through PM's.
I should have worded the parts of my post that werent directed at you but rather to the poster who was telling Rican that he should post at all.
I apologize to you Daxx for this misunderstanding. I bet as you read my post you thought to yourself WTF?
FUCK MICK!! >:mad WHAT THE FUCK IS HIS PROBLEM?

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
I really don't understand what your problem is i said i did not want to debate with you, because i didn't like what you implied last time plus we have been arguing too much lately. But that doesn't mean we have to ignore each other completely i have still spoken to you have i not ?? when you wanted to know the question about Amir Khan's opponent in the amateurs i answered it, when you wanted to know how many kids Hopkins had i answered it, when you uploaded that fight i gave you credit and CC you did i not ?? i just think we shouldn't debate because we end up arguing but like i said earlier we don't have to ignore each other completely.
As for Ali threads i don't post in Ali appreciation threads i did post in Althugz's thread but that wasn't appreciation thread, and plus i wanted to know his opinion on a few of Ali's controversial fights. But i do not sarcastically make a post and try and cause an argument like Rican was. And thats it really i don't want to argue with you i would rather we would leave this thread now because nothing good is going to come of it. Like i said to you before if you got any concerns/problems etc PM me, Anyway's i'll be out all day if you want to reply i would rather you PM me laters.

If Pryor wanted to fight Leonard, he should have jumped up to welter & beat a path to Leonard's door; after all, the weltwerweight division is one of the most celebrated divisions in history, whereas the super lightweight division is hardly worth a mention.
Leonard was also the biggest name around, so it would make sense to jump up & fight him.
I just don't get all this Leonard ducked Pryor stuff.

Like I said Mick there was no offense...I could also understand your point on the whole issue....Rican is one of those guys who does not go overbpard but just makes those one line digs and stirs things up...Then plays innocent,,,,this was perfect example.....But there was no offesne taken on anything on my part...I was just saying I did not understand how it all came on me lol....
As for you and ICB I know nothing of your issues that is between you all....
ICB and I have always been on good terms and still are as far as I know....
CC's to both..this was just something that somehow got out of hand...and again Rican just sat back and enjoyed it all pretending he started up nothing

I just don't get all this Leonard ducked Pryor stuff.
Pryor called out Leonard numerous times and said he would gladly go to 147 to fight him.
At the time Leonard was a young Welter and really didn't need a war with Pryor. As I stated earlier Leonard may well have won, but a fight with Pryor left scars on careers and Leonard didn't need that early on. So yes, Leonard (on of my favourites) ducked Pryor.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
Thanks Mick for your support!! Since certain posters are so touchy and volatile without really knowing me too much (since I post casually), they assume that I am being sarcastic and posting things for reaction purposes. We all know what happens when you assume (you make an ass out of you but not me *comment made to add a funny and different take to the the common version of the phrase, not to be sarcastic or imply certain posters are asses*). When the "bottle" comment was posted I was mocking/making fun of the way Panama Lewis said it more than anything else. Perhaps I should have simply stated my opinion that when I think of Aaron Pryor, the first two things I think about are: a) What an animal, b) But...that bottle controversy... These are my last thoughts on this unnecessary "drama." But CC to Mick.

Re: I just got done watching a set of Aaron Pryor fights and....
Hitman to be fair though he endsup fighting Hearns who ended Leonard almost we never got to see Leonard full prime because of that fight.

How do you arrive at the conclusion that Leonard avoided Pryor?
Leonard was the welterweight champ & Pryor was the super lighweight champ, so how can you avoid someone that is not even in your weight class?
If Pryor wanted to fight Leonard, he should have jumped up to welter & beat a path to Leonard's door; after all, the weltwerweight division is one of the most celebrated divisions in history, whereas the super lightweight division is hardly worth a mention.
Leonard was also the biggest name around, so it would make sense to jump up & fight him.
I just don't get all this Leonard ducked Pryor stuff.
Why didn't Pryor just go up to weltwerweight anyway?
It's not as if the super lightweight division was a marquee division where you could make loads of money.
Pryor could have had some mega battles with the likes of Leonard, Hearns & Duran.
I cannot accept that man who fought Tommy Hearns, Wilfred Benitez & Roberto Duran would be scared of fighting Aaron Pryor.

I dunno if I can agree with that dude. I know you said you don't care what anyone tells you but just IMO there is NOTHING you can take (drugs, steroids or whatever) that will stop you from going down from such a vicious right hand. I give full credit to Pryor for taking that punch and still remain standing..Like you said though man I havn't seen all of Alexis' career so i'm certainly no authority on the subject. I just wouldn't like to take those victories away from Aaron because we're speculating that 'nobody could have survived Arguello's right hand'. I think that's a bit unfair and degrading to Aaron. We don't know how he took the punch..he may just have been a hard bastard or just stayed standing on instinct. JMO respectfully.
