Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Thursday, January 17 2008
Roy Jones Jr. worked the mitts and showed some of the blazing speed that made him the pound-for-pound best boxer for a decade during a media workout Wednesday at Kingsway Gym in New York featuring fighters from Saturday's "Bring on the Titans" boxing event at Madison Square Garden and on HBO Pay-Per-View. Jones will face Felix “Tito” Trinidad in the main event. "Guess who's back, Roy Jones Jr.," Jones declared. "Ain't nobody got the speed to handle me. Only Floyd Mayweather comes close to me and he's still 10 miles an hour slower," Jones quipped. "I feel good. Now is just the waiting. You fight the fight a bunch of times in your head and I think of different ways to do it. I have several options and every night I think of a different option."The best birthday present for me would be a knock out on Saturday night," continued Jones. "Tito's fighting the toughest fight of his career. He picked me to get up for this fight. He knows I'm a guy who normally beats him so he knows what type of shape he's got to get in to step into the ring with me. I understand that."
Hmmm, i'm not sure Floyd is smaller so he should be faster. Missed the old crazy combos of RJJ. It's just that PBF doesn't let his hands go as often. But I loved the performance against Ricky Hatton.
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Jones was faster in his prime, but not now.
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Prime for prime Jones is probably faster. But Mayweather's defense is MUCH better. And so are his fundamentals. And his chin. Jones' knockout was bound to happen, but under similar circumstances Floyd may not have even been knocked down. Look at the close of the fight with De La Hoya. Oscar hit him on the button with a hard shot and Mayweather didn't even blink.

In my opinion that fight was an SHOW because Oscar hit more hard than that , that is why Floyd even blink... I realy want see ;D if Floyd can hold a Cotto Shot like that.... What do yu think?

I've only seen floyd stung once....and he coped with it very well.
I can't see Cotto having Mayweather in trouble unless Mayweather gets really careless.

the tarver knockout on roy would have kayoed just about anybody...let's add up the factors
1 - a naturally bigger man
2 - a perfect shot on the chin
3 - opponent doesn't see it coming
yeah floyd would go night night too....if oscar had all those factors lined up for him.... matter of fact if baldomir had all those factors against him (floyd) he'd probably kayo him..

Well, Oscar is a naturally bigger man and it was a perfect shot on the chin. While Mayweather was trying and ideally anticipating shots coming, I would say he didn't see that shot in particular coming. He wasn't shook. We all agree that it was a one-in-a-million shot that Tarver landed, but between the two, Mayweather has the better chin. Is this even disputible?
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
aint nobody got the speed to handle Roy, maybe not it isnt his handspeed that hes lost, it seemed to me like his footspeed, and does Roy have the chin to handle any good fighters hard shots? ( personally I hope he has gotta love rjj Old or Young)

Mayweather really early in his career against Miguel Melo was hit with a massive shot. And Mayweather took it very well and recovered in quick time as well, and even the massive shot he took against Corley it only took him 20 seconds to recover then he gave Corley a taste of his own medicine but even worse.
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Shut you face Roy and please go easy on Tito >:mad
;D ^-^
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Floyd was faster at 130 maybe. But a Prime Jones had faster hands than any one above 160 in the history of Boxing maybe.

Unless an opponent were to fall asleep how would it be even possible for them not to see a Carlos Baldimor punch coming?
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
PFP, Jones in his prime was faster than Floyd.
You could make an argument that Ali and Jones are the two fastest guys PFP in history.
Jones still has very good handspeed to this day. It's his legs that are completely shot.

it only takes one shot for a fighter who's chin had never been in question to all of a sudden become "glass jaw"
roy took a flush punch from james toney and mocked him afterwards, he took a flush right hand from a true heavyweight (ruiz) and didn't fall..then a perfect shot from tarver and he has a weak chin...lennox lewis tooks shots from holyfield, was in a war with ray mercer, got sparked by oliver mcall and then his chin is weak...
soon as the planets line up and floyd gets hit and doesn't get up he'll be the one with a glass jaw....but it makes sense because just like the aforementioned guys how else would floyd lose? nobody on the planet is going to outbox him for 12 so the only way for him to lose is to get kayoed by a god sent punch
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Zab was faster than Floyd, but he got pretty much shut out didn't he?
And as I've said before:
textbook skills and form> than natural physical ability.
People might think I don't like Roy, I do but I find a lot of his recent quotes so contradictory and hypocritical.
With a record of what 36 KO's after the Hanshaw fight he came out saying: "I don't like to KO guys unless I really have to."
Now in the run up to this fight he says "I really want a knock out" "Only a knockout will do" and "a knockout would be the best birthday present I could get"

Their handspeed is about the same. Floyd has better footspeed and faster upperbody reflexes.

Zab only looked faster than floyd because zab would throw slow punches followed by faster ones...jab...jab,left
Floyd right leads that got to zab before he could move...not once did zab land a lead left...
that's and old optical illusion slow followed by fast appears to make the latter stand out more...

I'd rate Zab faster. (Actually I checked and Baldomir did too!)
However Mayweather coped very well in that sitaution.
If you pose the question: How would Jones have coped with a guy just as fast and possessing similar skills??? I've got to presume not as well as Floyd.
Skills beat ability for me, thats why PBF is beter Pound for pound for me.
And God I hate Floyd, but he's damn good.

Actually It's not an optical illusion, it's a martial arts technique that was used by Bruce Lee and numerous others but was integrated into boxing by fighters like Lennox Lewis and SRL.
As I stated above Zab was said to be faster (at 147 at least) by common opponent Carlos Baldomir

I'd take that with a grain of salt though. For whatever reason, fighters always tend to praise guys they beat more than guys they lost to. A good example of this is when James Toney said that Merqui Sosa punched harder than Sam Peter. :D

Well by and large I take boxoing for boxing and judge on what I see rather than what I hear.
During the Mayweather Judah fight I thought that in the early going Judah did seem to be faster, but as the quality and quantity of his punching decreased I obviously couldn't say.
Then I see that Baldomir says Judah is faster even though he didn't really get along with Judah and now has a professional relationship with Floyd.
I felt even against Cotto Judah looked very fast. He's a nice fighter in fights that go well for him and although I have spent the last number of years consistently hating him, I am willoking him on in April against Margarito.

What the hell are you saying lol, I don't understand a word of that.
Re: Roy: Floyd is 10MPH slower!
Baldomir said Zab was faster before he fought Mayweather, and by then Mayweather was already way above his natural weight... when they fought eachother the first half Zab in terms of time it took for his glove to get out and back(clocked) was a little faster than Mayweather becuase of the first 3 and a half rounds, but after that Mayweather's handspeed was faster than Zab's for the rest of the fight and even faster than Zab at the begining, but by a negligible amount I think it was the size and color of their gloves that threw people off. Also Mayweather throws a lot faster punches when he doesn't have his hands right beside his head.
Regardless as about ROy JOnes Jr. he was not faster than Mayweather prime for prime, not even close, was he faster pound for pound? For sure, but watch Mayweather up to 140, hell even now and you'll see that besides combinations he has quicker hands than ROy... Many times I've watched Roy, in his prime and at LHW, then threw in a fight of FLoyd against Dela HOya, or Baldomir or against Judah and the speed is a little faster. SO Floyd at WW is still faster than Roy in his prime, and Floyd used to be way faster than he is now.
