Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
HBO APPROVES COTTO-GOMEZ
By G. Leon
www.boxingtalk.com
Moments ago Bob Arum confirmed to Boxingtalk.com that HBO approved Alfonso Gomez as Miguel Cotto's next opponent. Cotto-Gomez will headline HBO's April 26 installment of World Championship Boxing. Antonio Margarito and Zab Judah will likely mix it up in a competitive fight on the televised co-feature. The card will take place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. HBO's Kery Davis was unavailable for immediate comment.
----------------------------------
Nothing wrong with a little tune up fight for Miguel before going after Cintron/Williams/Margarito.
I feel bad for Gomez :'(
Yet another Contender is going to be destroyed or humiliated by a superior fighter.
Credit to Gomez for showing tremendous balls for taking this match. I guess this will be his biggest pay day to date. 8)
Good luck to him and I hope he is not injured beyond recognition.
:o
Make a million fighting Cotto
Pay 1.5 million for facial reconstruction surgery.
;D

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Gotta give Gomez so much respect for this one, I know he will get paid alot but he still has to get in the ring with Cotto.
I feel quite sad because I like Gomez but he is going to be in alot of pain come that night
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Decent payday for him I suppose, worth a good hiding.
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
I think alot of people are underestimating Gomez, not that im saying that he has much chance of beating Cotto, but he is constantly improving and i think he will give Cotto a pretty competitive fight, and a good workout for Cotto, Gomez will make good money from this fight and if he performs well also elevate his status in the division. just my thoughts :)
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Here is a question i put to Cotto fans. You guys jump straight on FLoyds back everytime he even speaks of fighting a guy u think is not a top contender, yet here is your boy Miguel taking any easy payday against a guy who didnt even win Contender.... Is this a double standard?
Can u imagine the shit u guys would fling at PBF if he decided to fight Gomez?
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Can't argue with you there eagle. One point of difference is that Cotto lets his management pick his fights, he doesn't. Floyd seems to pick the fights he has himself.
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
good at cottos age to stay busy with a fight like this and will up his popularity and marketability, as Gomez is well known to the less hardcore boxing fans, and there isnt really a fight out there that makes better sense as all the other top guys at 147 have fights tied up against each other so miguels next fight should be against one of these guys an then floyd, and at the same point in floyds career he wasnt fighting champions every fight, let Cotto enjoy the limelight with a competiive "workout" fight, would anyone complain if he goes
-Gomez
-williams
-margarito
-Floyd
cuz i sure wouldnt, although im not saying i think these fights are sure fire wins for Cotto

Thanks mate. For the record i have no problem with Cotto taking this fight, I think he is doing the right thing. Will ake decent money for little risk.

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Paul Williams will accept a fight with Cotto, Just offer one. THE BOOGIE MAN COMETH

Call me cynical but i'm not really impressed with his level of opposition lately.
Branco
Malignaggi
Quintana
Urkal
Zab
Shane
Branco - Padded record....limited fighter
Paulie - At the time Cotto fought him, Paulie hadn't beaten anybody really of note.
Quintana - Claim to fame was beating a prospect. Understandable that Cotto wanted to adjust to 147 tho
Urkal - Not impressed
Zab - After Baldi and Mayweather had already beaten him, Zab had the look of a beaten fighter.
Shane - Kudos....could argue that his best years are behind him but could argue that his win over Collazo proved he was close to being the fighter he once was. I actually picked Shane to win so repsect to Cotto for winning.
And now he's fighting a reality TV star.
I just feel that Cotto is in his prime Now and therefore he needs to be aiming to unify. I see what Arum is doing with him and i understand they are trying to build up a following to give them a head of steam for a possible Mayweather fight
I guess i'd just be more excited about him fighting Tony, Cintron, Williams....or even Collazo.
Please don't take this as me hating, because i'm not....i'd just much prefer to see him beating top class guys who are at the top of their game. I'm actually more excited by the undercard.
I just don't agree with reality TV stars earning world title shots basically because they have had exposure to a mainstream audience. I get wound up with Boxing in general which seems to want to appeal to the mainstream public rather than appeal to it's hardcore fans.

I said it again if is not Floyd then Oscar if not either of them enter Williams.
I don't like this Gomez - Cotto fight at all. because of what I said above and What Gomez manangers are doing to him a la Vargas vs Tito so soon
-
Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Has Cotto ever called any fighter out?
Seems like he don't give a fuck about legacy or any of that crap.. as long as he gets paid

What is good for the goose, is good for the gander :lickish:
Calzaghe got away with it.
Jermain almost got away with it
You can't stop the Contender people from doing what they do best and that is throwing their fighters into the lions den. I am just glad that Cotto will be the lion who get's fed on this occasion.
We know that neither Floyd nor Oscar want anything to do with Cotto or Tony because they are afraid >:mad
Now, if Cotto does not fight Tony or Williams this year, I will be very pissed. I want to see him fight both guys this year and get them out of the way and watch Floyd and his fans tremble ;D
Make it happen.
Thy will be done.

I would not put it past Floyd that's for sure.
He don't fight the best and he is regarded as the greatest ever to have laced up a set of gloves.
I am not too worried about this because I know Cotto will fight Williams/Cintron/Margarito and that will be the end of that. Cotto will fight the best while Floyd tries to lie to the public about being retired and how he DOES NOT WANT to fight any Welter Weights, etc. My question is, how do you claim to be the best Welter Weight, if you don't fight any Welter Weights at all? That sure don't make any sense to me. I am sure Floyd's fans can justify it one way or another. They are very good at spinning and they should all be working for Fox News.
The fact that Floyd and Oscar wont fight Cotto, says a lot about Floyd and Oscar but I think it says a lot more about how dangerous Cotto really is.
I have to give Oscar more credit than I do Floyd because Oscar has faced better opposition than Floyd has.

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
If the greatest of all time, can get away with playing pitter-patter, patty-cake with an old man twice, I think I can give Cotto a break here.

Cotto has fought Welterweights who were all ranked in the top 10 i believe ?? and Cotto has progressed so much in the last year and a half and he is considered top 5 P4P fighter. I would say he cares about his legacy very much, as for Gomez vs Cotto i have no problem with it Cotto deserves a break after fighting in so many tough fights against good opposition.
Im Mayweather fan and im even disappointed he is fighting ODLH again, i understand he will get a lot of money for a rematch with ODLH, more than he would against Cotto. But its still disappointing because he has enough money i think he should concentrate on sealing the deal on his legacy not just fighting for money. Which he has plenty of and could probably buy a small island with his money.

And it was a hell of a win for Miguel too.
Miguel was going to get knocked out by Mosley.
Miguel was going to get out boxed and jabbed to death.
Who beat up who more?
Did Floyd do any damage to ODLH?
Not even a scratch on ODLH's face.
Shane can still beat Oscar ;)
Was Floyd's so called fight against Oscar exciting? Phuk no!
Next installment by HBO should be called TWENTY BORE SEVEN build up to another Floyd BORING match.
Or maybe the match should be called
We are going to fool the fans again.
>:mad
Floyd has more boring fights than I can keep track of.
:-*
Floyd is nothing more than a dirty pimp.
He can pimp my nutz cus I am not even going to watch their second fight for FREE.
BOYCOTT and this is the last time I mention PBF vs ODLH until my boycott video comes out.
;D
End.

I slightly disagree with you Danny, most of Mayweather's fights have been exciting. Even his fight vs Oscar wasn't that bad and was actually a bit better than i thought it would be.
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Jesus Chavez
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Jose Luis Castillo 1
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs DeMarcus Corley
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Zab Judah
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Genaro Hernandez
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Emanuel Burton
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Diego Corrales
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Phillip N'dou
Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Arturo Gatti
I find mostly every Mayweather fight to be exciting only a few have been boring like his fight with Baldomir which was a snoozer. But oh well i guess we all have different tastes, i have both Mayweather and Cotto's career set's and im big fan of both equally but in different ways, i was actually looking more forward to Cotto vs Cintron but im not disappointed with this fight at all. Like i said earlier Cotto needs one easy fight after all the tough battles he has been in recently, and i don't even think Gomez is that easy. I think Gomez has improved a lot since coming out of the Contender and remember he was fighting above his natural weight on the Contender. I think Gomez will do better than most people think but i think Cotto stops Gomez round about the 8th or 9th round.

I think Cotto is a tremendous fighter. I have no problem with him fighting Gomez, it's understandable.
I don't agree he's the type of boxer that cares about who he fights though.
When has he EVER called anyone out? Obviously his English is shit, but still...

PBF v Hatton was a better fight than Cotto v SSM....
If Floyd had fought SSM u would have said he just fought an old man, yet when Cotto fights him it is a great win.....
Double standard anyone?

Cotto did not ask for it. But look at it this way Mayweather wont even cosider fighting him so and other top contenders already have a fight coming up, he has stay active. Yes it will be murder but thank god that will teach the reality tv fighters a lesson not to bite more than they can chew. amen

Man I was really hoping for Gomez to fight Chavez Jr. and Kill him (beat him up ;)) .
I hate beting against Gomez he is a good prospect.

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Cotto couldn't find a better fight than Gomez? Come on man. Wish Floyd was fighting him, but he took a bigger payday and an easier fight against ODLH again. Cotto is dong the same I guess. A much easier opponent than Williams, Margo, Cintron etal.

Well eagle I'm not sure where to start here but here goes.
For starters Cotto has never claimed to be P4P #1 in the world, PBF has and is P4P #1 in the world so right off the bat its expected that the #1 P4P fighter in the world take on the toughest challengers out there hence why hes P4P #1.
If you notice Cottos quality of opposition has moved up and regardless of what people say the SSM was leaps and bounds for him. I mean think people actually say SSM won that fight that alone tells you how much a fighter SSM still is not only that but you have to see the Collazo performace to know that he could still perform at that high of a level. Also belive you me, that if and when SSM fights again he'll win and he'll perform very well. Remember this talk eagle. :)
Not sure if you ever saw the Cotto-Zab thread and how many people here thought Zab was gonna win and Zab was a huge test for Cotto. I personally didn't think so SweetPea and I had a really good debate in that thread it was like 16 pgs. long the thread and I said Cotto would never get credit for beating Zab once he beats him.
Quintana was Cottos 1st fight at 147, I mean Quintana was a champ and it was his step up fight, PBF fought Sharmba a blown up Welter for his 1st fight at 147? You tell me.....
Oktay was his mandatory so he had to fight him, he had no choice. He beat him and that's what matters in the end.
This is a gimmie fight, Gomez is to Cotto what Augustus was to PBF in 2000.

I don't have a problem with his opposition.
Paulie has proven to be better than people gave him credit for at the time when the fight was signed.
Quintana was his first fight at 147, and was coming off an upset victory.
Urkal was a mandatory who Cotto had to fight to keep his belt.
Zab was a replacement. Remember, Cotto was ready to fight Margarito, but Margarito backed out and decided to fight Williams. Cotto needed a replacement, and Zab was a worthy choice.
Mosley certainly proved that while he's old, he's still a very good fighter.
Cotto is coming off two very physical and tough fights. I have no problem with him fighting Gomez. I don't see Gomez winning, but he's not a complete stiff either. I've seen guys choose much worse opponents for easy wins than Cotto is doing here with Gomez.

Can u imagine the shit u guys would fling at PBF if he decided to fight Gomez?
This is a gimmie fight, Gomez is to Cotto what Augustus was to PBF in 2000.
hey Mick no disrespect was so ever You kind od look like a bit like Gomez
None taken, actually I'd love to get confused for a Gomez at a restaurant or club maybe I can get some FREE stuff. ;D

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Arum always puts together interesting cards. Judah-Margarito + Cotto-Gomez will be a couple of entertaining fights.
Last I saw of Gomez he did a PBF-lite on a washed up Gatti. Still, it was a strong performance for Gomez and I thought he looked very good.
I would not underestimate him, he will be a game opponent for Cotto. Gomez has everything to win by taking this fight.
I wouldn't say this is a ballsy move by Gomez, just a smart move. He probably feels at the prime of his career, his confidence is up after his biggest name win. If he can get the second biggest name in the division right now why not take it? It is that or sacrifice more sweat and blood by taking the long route, which may end up unsuccessful anyway.
For defense of Cotto taking the fight, why not? Gomez is a fairly big name because of the Contender. He is also unproven at this level. Give Cotto a confidence boost before sticking him in with Williams or Margarito, because either of those will be tough fights for Cotto.
I predict both Tony and Miguel win within the distance and then fight each other. And it builds up excitement seeing them on the same card then having them fight 5 months down the road.

Re: Gomez=Crazy! Accepts bout vs Cotto!
Gomez is not crazy...He will do better then most are giving him credit for...he won't win by any means but will make a good showing....Gomez wasnt to get into the mix...this is a win win for him....if he loses (and he will) people will not get down on him because he is expected to.....If he does well (and I think he will fare decently)...it will open doors for him...bigger fights in the future...
I applaude Gomez for taking this...shows heart...
