Does Arum not secretly want Cotto to fight MAyweather?
Its just speculation on my part, but I don't see why ARum doesn't throw out a huge some of money to have Cotto fight Mayweather, I think by Cotto saying he lets Arum choose who he fights, instead of chosing himself is hurting him. If Cotto say look Bob I am not fighting unless I get Mayweather, I am sure Arum could make a big enough deal for Mayweather to fight him, but like everyone else has seen I don't think Arum deep down believes that Cotto can beat Floyd.

Yeah, Arum is a very smart promoter. He's been throwing some small jabs at Floyd to hype up Cotto, but if you notice he's not going crazy demanding a fight with Mayweather like he was with Margarito. With Tony, he had a guy with a faithful Mexican following, if Floyd beat Tony, so what? Tony had 5 losses or something like that on his record so he might as well get a huge payday for Tony before someone else beats him. If Tony actually won then Tony is a bigger star and king of the welterweight division. It was almost a win-win situation.
With Cotto, he's got an undefeated Puerto Rican fighter on the cusp of superstardom. But the thing is that I think he knows Cotto is a little iffy. So he might as well keep the money train going and build Cotto up. In 2009, if Cotto is still undefeated, the Cotto fight WILL happen. You have to build up to these events.

Letting Bob decide who you fight is a very smart thing to do. I always thought that Bob was a much better than most of the others. And even though he talks utter shit, you want to believe Bob for some reason.

He should just give the most hardcore fans the fights they want, because we really like boxing. It doesn't matter that we've never had a pro fight, he should take the opponents we want on, because we know more about boxing than the average person. And if he doesn't, than we'll say he has no balls. And he'll be able to sleep so much better at night knowing that he gave up 15 million to make you happy, because now he'll never be ducking anyone in your mind ever. Is that about right?

As others have stated...Arum aint no dummy. I don't believe that he wants to see this fight happen. Truthfully...if you're (not just you...broad statement) a Cotto fan....you shouldn't want this fight to happen...not right now atleast.
I'm a fan of Cotto since day one...but I can say the same for Floyd. I don't want to see the fight because I don't want to see Floyd handle Cotto...& I think that he would. While I would'nt relate Cotto to Hatton because I believe Cotto is a much superior boxer to Hatton's brawler bull in style...one can't help but use the performance for a POV. Same could be said for the Cotto Mosley fight...but Floyd is much fresher & faster on his feet than Mosley. Cotto is a much better & stronger fighter all around than Hatton.
That being said...I could see the fight going the stretch & Floyd eating some heavy uppers from Cotto...but still outworking him down the stretch. It would be a grueling night for both...but again..I don't want to see Cotto handled.
I don't believe that Arum does either.

If he wasn't saying he's #1 and running his mouth selling wolf tickets, then it wouldn't be an issue. That is why I don't rate him #1. There are many other guys fighting the best opposition and winning while he continues to fight the most vulnerable money making opposition.
If you want to rate him as the p4p best businessman in boxing, then that's a different story but we are talking about boxing here.
BTW, even as the boxing businessman thing goes, he'll never get that top spot either because that belongs to Oscar.

Hey, I want Floyd to fight Cotto as much as everyone, it really dissapointed me that he's going through with the Oscar rematch. It's not as though I'm being "fooled" into thinking this fight is meaningful, or that it will be much different than the first fight.. But, my point was that as long as Cotto can't bring close to the money that Oscar can, ANYONE in Floyd's shoes would make the same decision. The problem lies with the lack of an informed, mainstream audience. If the average person who paid to see Floyd vs Oscar the first time knew who Miguel Cotto was, then Floyd probably would be fighting him now. But that's not even close to being the case. And it's because boxing isn't a mainstream sport, but De La Hoya is a mainstream athlete. Everyone knows him, and most only know Mayweather for beating him. It's really painfully obvious why Mayweather isn't fighting Cotto now, almost as painful as reading you blame everything on him not having the balls.

Its funny that people are complaining about Mayweather fighting Oscar when IMO Oscar beats Cotto more often than not. He is faster than Cotto, especially in his footwork. Oscar also has that great left hook and jab which Floyd nullified both in their fight. There are a few things that Cotto does to better, and he definitely fights a whole 12 rounds better than Oscar, but I see his slow pressure being a perfect style for Floyd to have his way with. I think Mosley getting hit over and over by the overweight, lethargic Vargas is the perfect example to demonstrate Mosley isn't, and has never been the defensive wiz that Mayweather is. Mosley is a sueprnaturally blessed athlete, but his skill level is way below that of Mayweather's, and his speed in general isn't even close to that of Mayweather's quick snappy punches will have more effect than Mosley's clubbing punches on a guy like Cotto.

But on the other hand, that's practically the story of his career, and ppl still find someone else he's ducking. I don't for an instant give Cotto a decent chance to win, and I do agree with you that Oscar may very well be the better fighter today. However, this rematch really doesn't do anything for the sport, it's just a payday for each fighter. Sure they are top guys, and anyone who deny's that is hating, period. I think Paul Williams has a chance, but what does Mayweather have to gain? Paul Williams is still ike 25 or 26 or maybe even 27, but still he is so young, and he is only going to get better. Also He is virtually unknown outside boxing circles because nobody will fight him. Williams height, speed, output, and Mayweather's problems with southpaws make this fight relatively close, but I still think Mayweather would block almost every punch and either get on the inside where he would be too quick for Williams or he would counter off the ropes effectively and still beat Williams every round, because until Williams develops a defense Mayweather would virtually hit him at will. Money in this case does make sense, the only reason to fight Paul is if he makes a name for himself, but until then he is just another giant waiting to be toppled by a guy like Cotto who will bust him up to the body. However even Cotto doesn't have that huge a draw in the sport. Sure he is huge in Peurto Rico, and in New York but I think people are overevaluating how popular Cotto is in the popular media simply because Zab Judah and Mosley aren't, suprisingly, household names in America. People might know MOsley because he fought Dela Hoya, but Zab wouldn't be known to almost anyone, and Mayweather still isn't big enough to get the huge numbers he has been getting without huge publicity advertisement, and a popular opponent.

I think you're right Taeth. I think Arum doesn't want Cotto to fight Floyd at all. He's just been hyping the fight for no reason. It's way too high risk for Cotto and could damage him in the long term. ;D

I don't think Arum wants the fight with Mayweather for Cotto. He'd much rather have Cotto fight Margarito. But as mentioned earlier, if Cotto is still undefeated in 2009 (and floyd is too), the fight will happen IMO

No probably not really.. At least it won't do anything to silence the real haters... However there are many people who know boxing and are generally fair and objective, who do criticize Floyd for chasing the money instead of fighting a few guys viewed as the most dangerous natural welterweights in the boxing circle. Like I said, anyone who can't see why he would fight Oscar again is just being ignorant.. However, it's perfectly fair to want to see him fight Cotto and Williams at the same time. I think it may do something to prove that he does care about taking on the best comers. However, he's made it to where he is by doing so, and now he's in a position where he can pick his opponents. Oscar was in the same boat for years, to a much larger extent.. And yet he never sought easy paydays and fought absolutely everyone who mattered. You can't quite say the same for Floyd yet imo. I know I really want to see him beat Cotto and Williams, way way more than Oscar again.

Great post. I think I personally would rather see Floyd fight Cotto just for the fact that it's so in demand at the moment and I would like to see Floyd silence the critics.
But on the other hand, that's practically the story of his career, and ppl still find someone else he's ducking. I don't for an instant give Cotto a decent chance to win, and I do agree with you that Oscar may very well be the better fighter today. However, this rematch really doesn't do anything for the sport, it's just a payday for each fighter. Sure they are top guys, and anyone who deny's that is hating, period. But, it's old news as far as each fighters careers are concerned... Floyd doesn't stand to gain anything but money in this rematch imo. and of course, that's what he should be concerned with, as I said in my last post. Still though, it's a bit disheartening, to say the least. Can you honestly say your happy with this choice of opponent, that it's a great fight?? I can't see it. Floyd can only win by a wider margin this time, it should be a great technical matchup as the first, but, it's not going to do anything for boxing in the long term. Now that I type that though, maybe Floyd beating Cotto wouldn't really either, all that would do imo is re-establish the fact that Floyd is the best fighter around, and noone is going to beat him. I'm a little drunk, so I'm being less partisan that I usually am. Cotto has NO chance at beating Floyd imo, I just wish there was someone out there who could give Floyd a great fight.

No probably not really.. At least it won't do anything to silence the real haters...
However there are many people who know boxing and are generally fair and objective, who do criticize Floyd for chasing the money instead of fighting a few guys viewed as the most dangerous natural welterweights in the boxing circle. Like I said, anyone who can't see why he would fight Oscar again is just being ignorant.. However, it's perfectly fair to want to see him fight Cotto and Williams at the same time. I think it may do something to prove that he does care about taking on the best comers. However, he's made it to where he is by doing so, and now he's in a position where he can pick his opponents.
Oscar was in the same boat for years, to a much larger extent.. And yet he never sought easy paydays and fought absolutely everyone who mattered.
You can't quite say the same for Floyd yet imo. I know I really want to see him beat Cotto and Williams, way way more than Oscar again.
EXCELLENT POSTING,especially the highlighted. Most of you should know by now,I'm not a Floyd hater,I admire his talents and jsut call it as I see it with him. Sure,he is fighting Oscar and it would be silly on the one hand,for him no to take the fight based purely on the amount of $$$ he is going to make. On the other,I totally agree with everything you said. I WANT see Floyd fight a big strong natural WW. I want to see those guys get their shots.
You basically said what I and alot of others think. We don't HATE on Floyd(although there are some here that obviously do) but we are boxing fans who want to see the best fight the best.There's plenty of big strong WW's out there and Cotto and PW are great challenges.It's not as if he doesn't have $$$
Superb point on OSCAR too. I'm at times overly critical of him but something no-one can deny is that although he is an attention whore,he has taken tough fight after tough fight in his career(Although I find it hard to give him credit this time because I wanted to see him fight and give a younger WW a chance).

My question is..WHY is Zab the one fighting Margarito? If you ask me where Zab's career is gone HE should be the one fightign Gomez and Cotto should be fighting Margarito in the main event.
