Trinidad-Jones over 400K PPV Buys. Tito Earns $14 Million
Not bad for a fight nobody was really interested in:
According to a recent report on El Vocero of Puerto Rico, Felix Trinidad arrived home with two whopping checks that totaled slightly more than his earning for his super bout with Oscar De La Hoya at approximately $14 Million Dollars.
Trinidad's attorney Nicolás Medina conceded that Trinidad made at least $7 million plus over $2 million on PPV buys. However, they also had another agreement with King that sweetened the purse.
"Tito was well protected during the negotiation process and right after the fight we picked up both of our checks in full" said Mr. Medina. "Tito put on a great show and I think there were at least 15K people at the Garden. Furthermore, the people of Puerto Rico should be proud. Tito gave is all and has always carried the name of Puerto Rico high in the world."
As far as Roy Jones, his purse was not guaranteed but should be at least the $5 million dollars that was estimated prior to the bout

Roys purse was dependant on PPV and ticket sales.
But Trinidad was always a major attraction.
Remember until last year (Oscar-Floyd) Tito-Oscar easily held the non-heavyweight PPV record.
As the undisputed champ Hopkins got $2.5m to Titos $9m when they fought.

It is a little surprising, but he spent YEARS fighting uncompetitive fights against no-names. Jones got $10m for the Ruiz fight - his highest purse.

Roy was never a big draw the way Tito was. Roy was dominating his division with such ease and beating up people so onesidedly that there was no intrigue to his fights. Everybody knew no one was going to beat him so there was no point watching it unless it was to see Roy perform.
Tito on the other hand was alwais facing big challenges and was getting knocked down and was knocking people out. It is very rare to see a boring fight when Tito was in the ring. And after the DLH fight, he became almost as big as him.
I said it before once if Tito had not retired after Hopkins and stayed busy, I have no doubt he would be as big as DLH when it came to big events.

Where are you getting 400K PPV buys from? I don't see it mentioned in the article you posted and I'm not finding that figure anywhere online.

Making this kind of money Titowould be stupid to pack it in now .
I think he boxed well last Sat . He didnt look like a shot fighter . If he just moved down to a weight where his power had an effect then I think he could relaunch his career . Someone mentioned Lacy and that would be interesting but I think he needs to get down to atlerast middle cuz these guys are just gonna walk through his shots and as weve seen without his power he doesnt have much .

fightnews reports that it did over 500K & the article you posted doesn't mention any figure for PPV buys

That's right. Considering that he moved up in weight drastically and faced a bigger guy, he didn't look THAT BAD. Actually, I was somewhat happy with his performance. Good body shots, cutting the corners, jab, hooks, straights, etc. Of course, didn't do much against the bigger guy. Going back to at least middle could bring some competition to that weight.

If this is legit I find it pleasently surprising, Mayorga Vs Vargas did 300,000 PPV buy's so I don't find it out of this world that this fight could put up 4

LOL that was a nice try on the calculations but it really does not work that way. You also have to add the pubs and other businesses that bought the fight. I saw a contract from a frind of mine that owns a pub and he had to pay 10 bucks per person that showed up. He had 90 people in the place, thats 900 bucks right there. And his place aint that big or popular.

Well I guess there is no way they could know for certain. But in this case he charged 10 bucks for entery. Everything he made at the door goes to Don King everything made at the bar goes to the owner. Yes the owner can cheat and say there was less amount of people than there actueally was. But there is also a minimum amount you have to pay. Don't know that number for sure.

Another local newspaper "El Nuevo Dia" indicated that the sells were over 500,000 subscriptions and $25 millions income in the domestic television. I don't know why the surprise for the fight selling like this. Yes, we have to admit that both fighters past their prime. Tito was coming from the worst lost of his career and more than 2 years retirement, and Jones had loses by KO, but still both were superstars and both will be in the hall of fame some day. We can not take that from them.
The good thing is that both presented to the Madison in great shape, and did not still the money of the fans. We had paid more money for watching marathons in a ring instead of a fight. I was more surprised for not seeing the Madison at full capacity.
