- The Greatest 'Latin American' boxer - (Not Mexican or P.R.)
We often talk and list the 10 greatest Mexican fighters and Puerto Rican fighters as they tend to have the larger pool of fighters.
I put together a list of the top 10 Greatest Latin Fighters (NOT Mexican or P.R)
As usual keep in mind that I will not list fighters whom I have not seen and or feel I don't know enough of so you wont see Panama Al Brown on here among others...
1. Roberto Duran - Panama
2. Alexis Arguello - Nicaragua
3. Carlos Monzon - Argentina
4. Jose A. Napoles - Cuba
5. Kid Gavilan - Cuba
6. Kid Chocolate - Cuba
7. Eder Jofre - Brazil
8. Antonio Cervantes - Colombia
9. Nicolino Locche - Argentina
10. Ismael Laguna - Panama
Honors: Sugar Ramos - Cuba, Eusebio Pedroza - Panama, Santos Laciar - Argentina, Hilario Zapata - Panama, Betulio Gonzalez - Venezuela, Carlos Hernandez - Venezuela.
Quite possible the hardest list I've ever had to put together gave it a lot of thought and after changing it about 15 times I stopped with this one.
Thoughts opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks fellas... :)

Latin originated from Europe... what do you think the Roman's spoke?

Besides every spanish person of descent of the Americas is from either Portugal Spain in their descent, and both of those countries have a Latin lineage.

Spain and Portugal are latin countries but they're in European continent.
They conolized pretty much most of central and south american countries? ???
I suck at history. Don't mind me.

Re: - The Greatest 'Latin' boxer - (Not Mexican or P.R.)
Panama Al Brown

Celestino Caballero Panama

Re: - The Greatest 'Latin' boxer - (Not Mexican or P.R.)
To Taeth and others:
I didn't create this thread to debate who's what.
History is just that history it's in the past.
Today Castillejo is considered European and not Latin.

Re: - The Greatest 'Latin' boxer - (Not Mexican or P.R.)
how bout Rosendo Alvarez from Managua, Nicaragua, was the one who put the Draw in Finito Lopez' record back in '98. Arce recently beat him though. respect nonetheless to this flyweight.

Pretty good list. I might switch Monzon and Arguello but just about agree with everything else. Plus, even if you added Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters I'd still have Duran #1.

I switched Arguello & Monzon back and forth about 4 times. Same thing with Napoles & Gavilan.
Thanks for your input.
Would also like to ask why you feel Monzon should be #2.

No doubt Mick.Valdez was a monster.Nice topic and a chance to speak on some guys who sometimes get passed over.
I want to add Miguel "Happy" Lora at Bantam,Not a great but very respectable.Out of Columbia.I had first had the pleasure to see him against the superb Raul Perez Before a hiatus and then watched him make a comeback on USA Fights vs Gaby Canizales (WAR).
You know the kind of Fighter you see at the end of Career and then Play catch up on and feel you missed out on??He was one of those for me.Beat some top notch guys,W.Vasquez,A Davila,Minus,Zaragoza.Pretty smooth tactician.

Pretty much I guess for the same reason I'd have Duran at #1, being that he was completely dominant at middleweight, as Duran was also (probably moreso dominant) at lightweight.

Good choices also - although I am surprised while Miranda garners that added comment, instead of, say, Casamayor? Do you really think Miranda will go down as the better fighter p4p?
Juan Carlos Gomez (Cuba) also merits an honorable mention imo. At least for his results at cruiserweight - the jury is still out on his HW future...
A few guys with the potential to make it onto the list:
- Jorge Linares (Venezueala) - definitely.

How about some of the great talents that Cuba hs produced but who never went pro.
Cuba's 'machine' for finding, and nurturuing talent has probably never been matched .... and someone like Teoflio Stevenson is a great heavyweight ... period ..... it does not make him worse just because he never went pro I would have thought?

What a tough little fighter he was always gave it his all. 'Jibaro' Perez yet another name you don't hear often. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and talked to him about his career.
Spicoli you always bring up these names that don't get mentioned often names that I'm very familiar with... :)

I'll repeat it again.
I left out Mexico & PR because for the most part lists of they're greats are always made.
How often on here do you see a list of Mexican greats or PR greats? Very often....
So I thought it would be a little different to list great Latin American boxers not including Mexico & PR because those list of fighters are done so often.... ;)

I see your point 'X' but how can you measure what a profesional fighter did vs. what an amateur did?
I don't think you can. You would have to measure them with different guidelines...
What I could do is modify my post and make a section for fighters who as you mentioned didn't turn pro but are considered great. Again, I can't see myslef listing a fighter who never went pro above or in a same list as let's say Napoles who's argueably Cubas greatest...

I attribute alot to the Forum In L.A Mick.Ive never been but The fighters that have plied there trade and created great memories for fans can fill a phone book.It was the highlight on Monday nights throughout the 90's to tune in and listen to the stories told,(I got a late start as a fight fan 88 roughly, before that it was all about the oakland A's and Dodgers baby ;D).I was not lucky enough to catch a peak & prime Perez,The first time i had seen him was against Greg Richardson in 91' :-X and that was painful.I'll never forget his fight with Genaro Hernandez in there second meet ...One of the most devastating body shots Ive seen.Pure class guy Hernandez insisted Perez wear his belt leaving the ring. Its important to keep these pure top notch fighters in the limelight and at the forefront.Sometimes s!!! gets real repetitive and we think the fight game revolves only around HBO Lol and we only see "The now".
Whats Perez like Mick. Not to sound like a total Fluffer but I'm envious of those opportunities,Delving into a fighter outside of the ring and peeling back the veil so to speak.

Also, according to Wikipedia, the Phillipines is part of the Latin Union. That gives a bunch of more options :)
