Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I like that Gomez is going after the big fights and big money. He is a fun fighter to watch. He likes to please the fans... but I think this kid needs to slow down a bit. I mean, good for him for beating Gatti... But he's not going in with Jesse Feliciano here in April. This is a guy that has stood toe to toe with Zab Judah, Lovemore N'dou, DeMarcus Corley, Paul Malignaggi, Carlos Quintana, Oktay Urkal and Shane Mosley!
I mean, I like the matchup and your all but promised an exciting fight with the two of them in there but I've seen Gomez improving greatly since the Contender. He has turned into a decent boxer. I'd like to see him improve more and he could have a LEGIT shot at a strap... I don't see this fight as a legit shot. He's getting tossed into a meat grinder... It's like Banks vs Miranda....
also the undercard is shaping up great with Cintron Margarito!

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
It's going to be a great card and I am sure Gomez Cotto will be a good fight.
I might be wrong but I get the feeling Gomez is in it for the money and he knows he won't be big time so he will milk his semi-celebrity status from the Contender until it runs dry and he will continue to go in the ring with whoever he can untill he is no longer marketable.
I could be way off though... But I don't think his handlers did him any favors by putting him in the ring with Cotto at this stage in his career.

I think you're spot on! CC ;)

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I'd expect it to the pretty straight forward for Cotto.
Ya never know tho
I'm more exciting by the Margarito - Cintron fight to be honest.

All the Contenders from season one seem to have been rushed but I think Manfredo Jr is more to blame than anyone else, since it was he that biatched and moaned about getting an undeserved title shot which in turn, put pressure on the rest of the Contenders and it's handlers. Peter was one of the most experienced fighters coming into the show with 21-0.
Alfonso came in with 13-2 and Sergio Mora came on the show with only 11-0 record. I said it before and I will say it again, Peter did not have the experiece to face someone such as Calzaghe. Mora doesnt have the experience for Taylor and Alfonso does not have the experience for Cotto.
Peter was put to shame by Calzaghe.
Taylor would have beat the noise out of Mora. (Wise decision not fighting him)
And Cotto is going to put a vicious hurting on Gomez.
Contender people don't know how to manage a fighters career and that is an obvious fact. Sure they have the pull to get title fights but what good is getting a title fight if their fighters are not ready and chances are they wont win? I know some of you are thinking these guys aren't championship material and that it would not matter what the Contender people did.
Oh and like PRIDE OF BOSTON mentioned? LMAO @ Miranda vs Banks. Now here is a fighter (Banks) with very little experience. I think I read that he has no amateur background. Talk about throwing your fighters to the wolves :o
;D
One more thing I think we should mention here is that Alfonso Gomez has never gone 12 rounds
:o

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I like Gomez but is no match for Cotto.
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I really don't think much of Gomez chances at all. He seems tough but that in the long run for him might not be such a great thing since he'll take a long, drawn out beating.
I thought he looked a bit uncomfortable against an old past his prime Ben Tackie, and this is a completely different level than that. Although to be fair I thought Teddy Atlas was overstating how well Tackie was doing but it wasn't an impressive performance to me.

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I think this fight is slightly more credible than Oscar vs. Forbes. But only slightly.

Cotto can't fight in super fight after super fight,h'e sonly human, every fighter needs a breather here and there. it's a decent in between fight and not just that, but it's a smart move, putting him in with a Contender fighter,a well known fighter.

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
cotto should win but gomez will put on a good performance.
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I can't understand why Gomez's people would put him in with Cotto. They must figure that after beating Gatti, Gomez will never be more popular than he is now (which might be right) so they're just going to cash in. Any half-decent prospects the contender people had are being fed to the lions and are getting destroyed and the ones that haven't are being so poorly managed its almost laughable.
Gomez always looks soft around the middle, so my guess is Cotto stops him with a body shot.
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
gomez gets tko'd within 5
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
they probably see a fight with cotto as a chance to fight a big name in front of a large TV audience. Some fighter go there whole career and not get that. they probably figure that even if he loses as long as he looks ok he'll develop a fan base. plus it's probably the larges payday of his career.
I'm just glad NBC isn't still making him fight the other contenders.
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
no Gomez is not doing it for the money.
if you watched contender you would know how he is. he truly believes in himself.
now that doesnt mean he will win.
im a fan of gomez and i want him to win but i know its unlikely

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
I think it will be a competitive fight. Cotto is slightly better in most categories but he has just as much heart and determination. Definately not a match, i actually think Gomez will make him look bad if not win.
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
:box3: Gomez Starts out optimistic.
:cwm13: Cotto a little sceptical of Alfonso's efforts.
:duel33: Theres a bit of a tussle at first.
:poke: Gomez's efforts irratate Cotto, doesn't he know he's here to lose?
:cwm23: Cotto frustrated lights the fire.
:stars: Gomez begins to see what all the fuss is about
:beatdeadhorse: Cotto Hit's full Steam
:gnight23: Gomez takes a nice long layoff to enjoy whats left of his purse after hospital bills.

:-\ I dont know how can you think that these fight is a competitive fight, you know wha? The way that Gomez fight is going front but, Cotto really like it " Underdog " go front and body punch , and Gomez like that too...... i know that....and that going to be his Big Mistake..... Because Gomez dont have hard punch...... If Gomez think to do that , he going have a DAMN beating dude....I put 3 round KO..... Im telling you....Cotto is too Superior friend.....

Cotto never stood toe to toe with Ndou, he was forced on the back foot for most of the fight ;)

I just don't see how Cotto's only slightly better in most categories. He hits much harder, he has far better technique, he's clearly faster. If Gomez has anything he's tough but Cotto's chin is not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be.
This has the makings of a beatdown IMO.

I hear what you are saying but I think it will be slightly more competetive then that... Gomez can take shots... He has been improving leaps and bounds from the Gomez that lost to Manfredo in the second fight. I do think Cotto will deffinitly win but I don't think it's going to be a tree round fight.

;) Is a SIN ahhhh? But is true friend, Doyou know ,what that im thinking sometimes ? Maybe cotto will put Gomez ,out of road in this fight.....i know that Gomez cant hold firstable ,the body punches from Cotto and the problem of Gomez is that he is slow, dont have hard punch, maybe with his Pride going demostrate that he will similate Cotto punches , Cotto going try to finish him fast as posible , because as more faster he finish , much better for him to the next fight......but if Gomez comes to fight body to body is like you said Gomez going get HAMMERED...... 8)

Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
This is sounding like the noise I heard back in April and May leading up to the Miranda Pavlik fight. I told you so. No one believed me. Gomez is a guy who can fight in 4 weight classes and do well. Remember he beat a top ten middle weight in Mafredo Jr. Gomez is for real and I think the Mexican could shok the Puerto Rican. It is possible.
-
Re: Thoughts on Gomez Cotto
One thing's for sure. Cotto won't be looking PAST Gomez. It's just not his style. He'll prepare for Gomez like he prepares for every fighter he's ever met.

>:mad With all respect ,you are real crazy dude and im not believe you, these is not enought argument to said that Gomez will be a biggest treat for Cotto dude , if you see a topics before , i said that i dont underestimate Gomez , but if he comes to fight Cotto , body to body : Cotto going to put him out of the road , because Gomez dont hit hard punch and he is slow, if he do that :im surelly that he going do a big mistake.....maybe by his pride he could show something, but i give 3 round by KO.......
