Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
of him as a person?
Perhaps this thread has been done before but it really dosen't matter because I wasn't here to see it.
I lost alot of respect for what the man said in the stand off against Joe Callzage, he just appeared to be another stereotypical thug.
I can not respect a fighter who can not respect my race.
Any views?

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
A)Its been done 3 times now
B)Your race? You dont have a race son,the Moors succesfully raided Western Europe, and the Mongols sucessfully raided Eastern Europe

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
After a bit of thought I wasn't even bothered by Bhops comments.he obviusly knows theres a double standerd and knows he would get away with it so why not chuck it in to get more people watching.
Although of course i wasn't happy with it. It just didn't really affect me in any way.

I respect Hopkins as a fighter and also the fact that he has come far from his time in jail. I also do not think that there are many out there that have the in-ring boxing IQ that he does. However, I lost a lot of respect for him as a person during his behavior leading up to the Trinidad fight. Putting down Puerto Ricans the way he did was really unnecessary and classless. His remarks on Calzaghe were typical of Hopkins. Surely there has to be a better way to sekll fights than cultural insults.

great boxer and really admire his skills.

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
You look at where hopkins has come from and what he's been through and the way he acts and carries himself is just plain normal. He had his little racial slip up and since there were a ton of camera's around we all heard about it, but what about the stuff people say everyday hell maybe even some of us that would cause an uproar if put all over the media but we are quick to jump on them. Hopkins could have done a lot of other things in his life, he was going down that road but instead he got into boxing to help keep him from getting into your car or house maybe one day. I respect the guy for at least attempting to do some good instead of what most of the young kids from his hometown wind up doing, and he could be white, asian, and alien and i would think the same thing.

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
He's a tough guy, a blue collar fighter, cagey difficult to beat and even more difficult to beat looking good.
He's a new version of Marvin Hagler...not the same style but the same aura and the same fighting spirit

but I know with my ancestry that neither Moors nor Mongols are in my bloodline. It can be traced rather easily.I like B-Hop but it was pretty pointless to say such stupid S**T.While most of you will despise me for saying this, but let's be honest who is the most likely race to buy tickets, especially at ringside.White people.Pure and simple.

I don't think the standoff was a race thing....Even though some comments were questionable but not to a large extent...The "White Boy" comment was more of a expression type comment then one that had any racial overtones behind it.....
Aside from that Hopkins is known as a brash guy who is difficult to deal with...Just his demeanor....
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
Bhop is an undeniably great fighter... A true example of the fact that how you box dictates the mileage you have as a fighter.
He does not brawl... Fights smart... Fights dirty when he can... And can make ANYBODY miss and look out of their game. He is fighting at his age because his style and history supports it.
Who gives a shit what he said. I'm a "white boy" and I love the guy. Could care less. People are to friggin politically correct. Is it a double standard? Sure. It's our society that made it that way and not Bernard.
Everyone needs to look at it objectivly. If you have and are still pissed... Oh well.
Anyhow. The man has accomplished what few in history have and will. He was/is a truly dominant figure in the sport. From the looks of it he could fight convincingly for another few years.
As a person? He's rough around the edges cuz thats the place he's from. He's not something he's not. He speaks how he speaks and if people don't lke it.... Guess what?
They are either gonna watch the fight to hope he gets KOd cuz they hate him, or they are gonna watch it to see if he can back up his mouth.
Regardless people are gonna watch to see Bernard be Bernard.
A slick, dirty, no nonsence, smart fighter who can mix it up with the best.
Do I think Bernard can beat Calzaghe? I honestly don't think so. I am torn. I think Calzaghe is great and he looks like he'll just outwork Hop... But when has anyone ever kept to the gameplan and beat hopkins. No one!!! Even in defeat he makes you look bad. He has a bag of tricks so deep that you can't find the bottom.
IMO there should have never been a Taylor rematch cuz Bernard won. (I think he lost #2)
I don't think Calzaghe can look good against Hopkins. Not this fight. Bika made him look vulnerable... BUT! We all know Joe fights UP to his comp... SO... I have no F**Kin idea who to call.
Hopkins is a great fighter nomatter what and I can't wait to be at the HOF when he is inducted.
And, hey... If I don't happen to get round to New York on that date... I'll be there when Joe C gets inducted instead!
HOW WAS THAT?

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
I dont think what Hopkins said about losing to a white guy is racial at all. Its more to do with the perception that Black people are more athletically gifted than white people and to lose to someone who is viewed inferior would be a hard pill to swallow. It happens a lot at the athletics club i attend when a white athlete beats a black athlete they diss the black guy with comments like "shame u lose to the white boy..ect". Its not ment in a racial way as after they will all hang out and socialise with eachother.
As for Bernard the fighter hes a genius 40+ and still beating world class fighters very few other sportsmen would still be able to maintain that type of level so many years after their prime. He fights dirty when he has to, uses his strenghts to his advantage and always stays to his gameplan.
I dont see Joe completely dominating Hopkins as i believe Hopkins will up his punch out put a bit and slow the action down when he needs a break by holding and leaning on Joe after throwing a few shots. Hopkins ll be going into the fight more accustomed to the weight than Joe and i think Bhop could even get a Ko if Joe is as careless as he was against Kessler leaving his chin out and showboating. Hopkins has a bit of power as we have seen when he had JT shook and i think there may be one more big performance in the wiley old dog yet

It's a broad sweeping generalization about a race and is therefore racist.
It's just not a smart thing to say anymore...it's archaic and there is no need for it in boxing anymore

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
As a person he is a cock. Boxing wise, he is very clever with his choice of opposition, beating 'blown up' greats of this era like ODLH, Trinidad and Winky etc all look good on his resume. In the ring he goes from masterful boxer to dirty bastard at times but he's getting away with it and that's a skill in itself.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
very boring stylistically although technically brilliant but doesn't have any respect from me for the way he acts outside of the ring

Exactly. One's race shouldn't matter. But Hopkins seems to bring it up a lot. So obviously he must care.

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
I think it would be dumb for any of us who are not familar with him personally to sound off on what kind of a person he is. Lets face it, Bernard is a "showman", so most of us are only familiar with the character of Bernard Hopkins, not Bernard Hopkins the person.
He's kept his nose clean, he hasn't bitten someone's ear off or raped a beauty contestant, so theres really no need to speculate on him as a person IMO.

Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
bernard hopkins has come a long way from where it all began foe him, after leaving prison the warden said to him " i'll be here when you return" b-hop never returned, he used boxing as his way out that world.
as a boxer b-hop is a world class operator and uses mind games to gain the upperhand on his foes, as he's got older this has come more into his game plan.
i like most others don't aggree with what he said to joe and feel a man of his status who does so much work with youth offenders should lead with more sportsmen like conduct and leave such talk out of his frame, however i'm still a big fan and love listening to him at press cons as hes quite entertaining
he does help alot of young offenders, is prove that dedication and a clean living life style makes a big diff, he should be rememberd in years to come for that and not his silly coments in an effort to sell tickets
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
He's a bad motherfucker inside and outside of the ring, but he should also be respected for where he came from, what he has done, and what he continues to do.
-
Re: Bernard Hopkins: Your general opinion
Hopkin's Lashes out and not only Look's for confrontation but Insist's on It!!
He should remember everyday where he came up from.In the truest definition of the word He was a Thug.Even today It's criminal the way he removes a guys Nerves and then proceeds to beat them up ;D He say's some dumb s!!! from now and then..........Throwing the P.R Flag on the ground was An Asshole move! It's not always the right thing or the P.C thing but He's doing what has kept him at the top of his game and in the now.

You mean the way he doesnt do any drugs, lives like a Spartan, transcended his backround like few other fighters, and takes care of his family?
Yeah, who would want to associate with someone like that?
If it turns out he donates freely to the SPCA,and adopts orphaned kittens,Ill really hate the guy;D
