Got freaked out this morning
Just need to have a bitch because I got a bit of a scare this morning.
Was cycling to boxing training. I deliberately live close to my gym so it's not far at all.
Was cycling in a cycling lane down a road close to a golf course. I cut through the golf course, cycle down this road a few hundred metres and then go through a pedestrian train crossing to get to the suburb where my boxing club is.
Then out of nowhere I get yelled at by some guy in a car coming the other way. I'm across the other side of the road cycling the opposite way in the bike lane so there's no way I'm in his way.
I just automatically gave him the finger and kept cycling. I didn't catch what he was yelling but the tone was abusive so I just though Wanker and kept going.
He must have driven on for a minute then decided to turn around.
For some reason I decided to look behind me and I saw him coming back after me!
I got off the roda where he couldn't follow in his car - behind trees etc.
He pulled up in the bike lane and got out of his car and tried to chase me yelling in Arabic!
I was too fast for him on the bike and got to the train track while cars were slowing down wondering what the hell was going on so I got away pretty easily.
If hadn't looked back and seen him coming and was still on the road what would have happened?
If I was a 12 year old little girl or something who didn't think to look or know what to do what would have happened?
There were not that many cars around.
I'm so angry that I have to worry about this in my usually safe neighbourhood at 10 am.
The only reason I can think he decided to yell abuse at me in the first place is because I was wearing training clothes - summer here so they're just shorts and a singlet. Maybe judging by his language he's from somewhere that's not acceptable and he needed to tell me about it?!?!
I never expected to get this in Adelaide of all places!
All the muslim people I know through the university are really nice and treat me with nothing but respect and professionalism. They come to our country ready to accept that the culture is different here without making an issue out of it.
I visited a muslim country once (Brunei) and abided by the cultural rules by comvering up a bit.
Now though that there is obviously one fundamentalist Nutjob in my area I have to what - carry lead balls on my bike to smash windscreen if I have to? A brother of mine who rides motornikes keeps lead balls with him in case he gets trouble on the road.
Creepy, Creepy, Creepy!

Re: Got freaked out this morning
You never know whats going to set somebody off
I mean years ago Im walking down the road in the middle of nowhere with my buddy Larry
This guy goes whipping by,and obviously swerves at us,it was the way he hit the gravel and got right back on the road that was a clue,I mean the guy just missed us
So I give him the one didgit waive
The SOB has the audacity to go get the cops, and claim we were smoking weed
I didnt so much as drink at the time,it was the Camels we had walked in to town to get that we were smoking
This little hand gesture ended up costing me $125 for disorderly conduct
There is allways someone out there who is out of their teeny tiny little mind
-
Re: Got freaked out this morning
Well I can see he clearly has you unsettled as your usually impeccable spelling has gone to shit.
Roda and motornikes are certainly not words in my lexicon :p
As for the Arab if you have any more dealings with him just make an anonymous tip off to the police that you've seen an Arabic man interfering with nearby cattle.
As soon as it hits the papers he'll read it and assume he's been caught in the act and hopefully flee the country. ;)

Re: Got freaked out this morning
I had a great morning today.
Got to work and the coffee was nice and fresh. :)

You'd make a great charity campaigner Mick. I can imagine you going to an African refugee camp and listening to the distressed cries of anguished parents unable to feed their children and you saying 'Well I had a sumptous hamburger with fries and a diet coke '

Wish you'd got his number.
Got a mobile? IF theres no way out,
Obviously stareing and bending forwards reading out someones car number into a phone can stop them in their tracks. Even if your not connected you read out the car type and those plates out real loud so he can hear you and your usually safe and they are defused from further action.
Yell out fire! fire! fire! and everyone in the street will come out looking, forget yelling "help" it doesnt work as good anymore.

A couple of weeks ago my girlfriend was driving home from work and some guy was being a total asshole sitting right up her ass and swerving side to side as if to try to get around.. She got sick of him and stuck her finger up also, and the guy drove onto the dirt on the side of the road to get beside her... She sped up but she's got a little car so never really got away.. He was being a crazy bastard behind her from about 10 minutes... She tried to contact me but I wasn't quite home yet either... She also tried to make a scene of getting onto her phone, but he didn't care or back off... Finally I got home and heard her histarical message on the answering machine.. I called her back to find she'd pulled up outside a police station, but the guy was STILL driving backwards and forwards up and down the road sticking their finger up at her on each pass and making slashes across their neck signal things... She was too shit scared to even get out of the car and walk into the police station..
So I jumped in my car and swear I drove about 130 miles an hour to the police station and drove around the area for a couple of minutes looking for the bastard.... My adrenaline was pumping so bad I was getting freakin spasms in my back which were painful!
Fortunately or unfortantely I didn't find his car because I was so mad I would have just ran it off the road...
But point is, men can not handle their ego being dented by a girl not afraid to stick up the finger and tell them what they are doing is not on.
Second point, I guess some people don't even care if the police might get involved.
Third point,,, well, I don't know a third point.. some men are totally f'ked in the head maybe??
I think you'll be right sharla... When stuff like that happens to me, I just think, if that's how much someone gets worked up over something tiny like that,,, imagine how shit they must go around feeling ALL day???
It's a shame you get chased off the street in your home town of Adelaide by someone who obviously does not respect what Australia is and really shouldn't be welcome here...
As Lyle says,,, it's not racism, it's just principle!! Some of them just should not be allowed here...

People are people no matter where you go.
BTW, just because he yells something out in arabic, or dressed like an arab doesn't mean he's automatically a muslim extremist.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
I saw this vid a few months ago, it was some guy name Ackbar. I think his from the middle east or somewhere around there. This motherFxxker was raping a women, the only reason I think his name is Ackbar is because the women was screaming out the name Ackbar appearing to plead the guy to stop. She was crying and begging, i think there was another guy who was holding the camera. He might be the men name Ackbar but whoever those motherFxxker were they had me so mad. I believe the women was filipina cause of her light skin dark hair and accent, that made me a lot more mad. I really wanted to kill those animals, if you guys would of seen this vid it was just so upsetting. Its the only real rape video Ive ever seen. That almost made me want to join the u.s. army just so I can get back at those damn animals. I tried to do more research on who that women was, i tried the news everywhere but i really didn't find anything related to that vid but i know it was a real crime. I just hope justice is serve and those motherfxxkers get hanged after being raped by beer bottles. Animals like that don't have a place in this world. Onces found they should be tortured and then eradicated.

I guess I just got that impression not only because of his language but the way he was angry the first second he saw me. I've been hassled before but it's usually guys who comment on my ass and then get peeved because I ignore them or people on the road passing on my side who dislike cyclists. Not people who have to go out of their way to chase you down.
I knew I couldn't be anything to do with my cycling because I was across the opposite side of the road going the other way and I didn't even notice his car before I heard his angry yelling. Whether or not religion was his motivation he was extreme in some sense. Had he managed to get close enough to grab me I wouldn't have hesitated to put the steel frame of my mountain bike through his skull because he was so angry.
As I said before I study with some muslim people who are absolute legends. I don't want to really make this about that and to incite anti-muslim behaviour. I guess he could have been on drugs or something and I might not have seen some tell tale sign of it because I was too busy getting out of there. The thing is if he was speaking English or I knew Arabic I wouldn't have to speculate about what he was saying. I'm just left guessing what might have set him off.
Where I was at the time had a golf course on one side and a train track with trees on the other. Not many people around - i suspect that probably was part of his thinking when he decided to turn around after a minute and chase me down. If he was drugged up wouldn't he have swerved immediately like the guy who attacked Trainer Monkey? He considered it and turned and came back. Freaky!
What happened to your girlfriend sounds freaky Diz - I hope she hasn't seen him since. I don't like that this happened somewhere I travel often and I suspect the same thing bothers your girlfriend!
Thanks guys - Trainer Monkey, Bilbo, Julius and Andre. Also glad you had a good morning for a change Mick.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
You did the right thing cycling off. Isn't there a safer route you could take? I wouldn't out so much emphasis on the Arabic, maybe he just didn't know English full stop, maybe he was having a bad morning etc etc.
-
Re: Got freaked out this morning
You turn your vehicle around and chase someone, even going to the effort of getting out and chasing them on foot when you can't drive any further because you're having a bad morning?
You can say he might have non-cultural reasons for chasing me but he was definately psycho. No bad morning justifies that let alone whatever he planned to attempt if he got close enough.
I don't know why he went after me. All I know is he was angry the first second he saw me before I even saw him.
As I've said I don't dislike muslim people. I'd never assume this behaviour is typical of any culture more than another. There are stories daily of irrational people attacking each other using cultural differences as an excuse to justify it including people of my own race.
I just think that he saw something immediately which POd him and I can't think of what that might be since I was cycling in a bicycle lane on the other side of the road. If I was on the road and he was passing in my lane I would have assumed he just hated cyclists. If I try to work out what it was that set him off some sort of cultural difference seems like one possibility.
What else can other people think of that would evoke such an instant angry repsonse? Considering this is from someone at 10 am who didn't appear drunk and is still capable of rational enough thought to drive on for a minute and then decide to turn around and come back to get me - not tooting or yelling on his way back to warn me he was coming - only going off again once I'd spotted him and gone off road to avoid him.
The muslim people I work with would never behave like that. They are great people. I hope they don't get chased down the street by psycho because they look different. I'm glad they are here. I work closely with a few including one which is much more help to me than my own supervisor. Actually there are a lot of people from different cultures where I am and those who seem to have more disputes with other people are not Muslim.
I sort of regret that I even mentioned he spoke arabic now but I'm not racist for being freaked out and trying to work out what set a complete stranger off in what is usally a safe area particularly at 10 am on a Saturday morning. Something freaks you out like that you try to work out WTF it was - that's natural. I am not for a second recommending people go out targeting random Muslim people in revenge - that would be just as bad.
As for going another way - other routes would take three times as long and be dangerous because the traffic is too heavy to cycle in.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Just get the number plate, rule one.
HEs gone then.
My misses before we went out got hasseled up in the belgrave hills on her way to work. Around where puffing billy goes along here in Vic.
this prick tailgated her through the hills so she pulled over and let him go.
HE started the stop start routine in front of her old holden station wagon ,an old HQ wag.this went for miles.
He was in a hotted up valiant pacer, dice on the mirror etc..
She just put her foot down and pushed him along from behind and ran him off the road ;D he stopped, she went flying past. next town he comes around a round about the wrong way and stops her takes her keys out of her car. She goes to his car takes his keys out of his .they are running around swearing at each other.
This fool calls the cops and they turn up at my misses work with him cause he wants his dents fixed. The stories are told and this fool says in front of witnesses that he hates surfrs and surfy wagons anyway!
My mises said the joke on you fool we are 40 miles inland I dont surf its just a fukin car.
The cop let it all go, seeing 'she' didnt want to press charges if he dropped his of ramming.
That was 20 years ago there are worse people around now, best avoid them completly or say sorry before you swear at them.Put them at a false ease promise them anything,Walk away safe ,note their number plates down and get some cops you know personally to put a pollution exaust immitting roadworthy style check on them for the next few years.
They have to take their car to get it checked at their expence then go back to the exact cops and its up to them if they let it through or not;D.Which they do , then they pull them over again and again till they get the message they have fucked up royally and change cars.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Your wife sounds like a gutzy woman Andre.
In my position though i'm really aware of how much more vulnerable I am on a bicycle in an altercation with a car driver. My first thought when I saw him coming back was to get as far off the road as possible.
I am a little short sighted and there was no way I could get his number plate without him being much closer to me than was safe.
No people around to help except one car which slowed for a second up ahead and then drove off as soon as they saw he couldn't run fast enough to catch me on my bike.
If this happened to one of my bros they'd probably wait for him to get out of his car and then turn and chase him. They are six foot two and six foot 4 though.
They are big an oddly enough usually only get hassled by drunk guys at night who feel brave because they are in a group. As a bantamweight I wouldn't bet my safety on letting him get close enough - especially in his car - to argue with him.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Well I should have gone in a made a statement earlier but i'm off to do that now. I told my mum about it - she works in the Admin department of forensic science. She mentioned it to a cop and was told I should make a statement even though he didn't actually catch me because it could be a recurring incident.

Piss on that motherfucker. Tell him to go back to where he came from if he doesn't like the way women dress. Coming to another country and then trying to tell someone else how to live.
I think that middle finger REALLY got him in a spin though. Serves him right, the bastard.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Get a license to carry a firearm and shoot that motherf#cker next time. You shouldn't have to look over your shoulder every time you want to go for a run; worried some psycho booby is going to chase you and set off his semtex bomb belt. Or take a bar of soap with you and throw it at him; he'll run for the hills and never bother you again.

Wonder if that other motorist got his number down?
Or anyone else around?
Hire car,
Cops would check those and local gas stations and epos cards used throughout the day by guys matching his description.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
You are over reacting, a terrorist would not want to create that much attention. As has been said, it could have been a white Aussie psycho, their made in all colours and cultures. You did the sensible thing with running.

The other car didn't hang around long. I suspect it was not occupied by a large guy or someone who felt able to handle themselves physically because it was like "she's not being murdered is she, she got away - good - ok I'm outta here! No I won't go and ask her if she's alright - she's cyling away in a hurry"
It wasn't a hire car. It was old. I suspect he lives here. I never assumed for a second he'd just arrived. His culture is obviously different to mine and I said he may have cultural reasons for being instantly angry at the sight of me before I even saw him. I don't know why that's so hard to believe when I didn't have a chance to do or say anything or even notice his car before he reacted so aggresively just to the sight of me!
I never said he was a terrorist I think I said he could be an extremist or a fundamentalist - I wouldn't think that was the same thing. If it is I used the wrong words for what I was trying to say.
Although while I would say terrorists are definately the very small minority from his instantly angry yet thought out behaviour I wouldn't put it past someone like that to target particular groups of people. He's not setting bombs in buildings but he's stalking and raping women.
Also his attempt at getting me was in a secluded area on a quiet road after driving past yelling loudly, thinking about it and then coming back. He didn't make noise on his way back until I'd seen him and gone off road. He didn't intend to attract attention to himself. He intended to come up behind me quietly. I'm sure with a thought out plan of attack like that he knew what he was doing.
Also if I have to hot foot it away from a guy who apparently fits the description of a rapist and I say I'm freaked out I'm not overreacting!!!!!!!
I'm a transport cyclist - I get hassled on the roads every day and usually don't get freaked out - I can tell the difference between I'm out to scare you for fun because I'm a wanker and I'm going to try to hurt you!
I can't believe how I'm the bad over-reacting, racist one out of this! Of course I was actually there but other people here somehow KNOW better than me that this guy didn't have and opinions he might have been brought up with that caused him to have that unprovoked attitude towards me!
-
Re: Got freaked out this morning
Sharla dear, maybe you should drive from now on. That is scary for a women to go through something like that then later find out a men with similar description fit a men reportedly raped another women. To me a Liar is a lower form of a coward but a rapist now that is just not human. Damned animals and should be treated like animals!
I hope for your safety sharla, hopefully you can figure out a better and safer way. Maybe a tazer can come in handy, or an ice-pick something sharp but small. I prefer you start driving then riding though, its safer and you can hide a little suprise shotgun if another animal comes after you.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Yes you are right Julius. I really should buy a car soon. I'd rep you for that suggestion but I have to spread it around. I try to catch the bus sometimes but on weekends they don't run as often and there is no bus that travels directly from my house to the gym.
Here we need 50 hours of driving logged as a learner with someone else before we can drive by ourselves. I've got about 15 or 20 hours left but I'm paying to get most of them with an instructor since I don't live with my parents or anyone who can give me lessons regularly - especially since I train most nights and other people in my family fill all their spare time up with sport as well.
I'm thinking about paying someone in my club petrol money to pick me up on weekends to drive me even though it's only a 10 minute cycle away and a really nice suburb!
I don't think it's easy to get a gun here. I thought about knuckle dusters but I still couldn't see me winning an arguement with a car on a bicycle just because I'm wearing knuckle dusters. I might get them for when I'm running on the local jogging tracks though. Maybe I can just leave them on while I run and it'll look like I'm just wearing a lot of jewellery?
I'm wondering if I should also go and warn people at the local tennis courts and the big commercial gym which is just about 500 m down the same road. I often see young tennis players warming up by going for a jog along there. Maybe print out a flyer they can stick on their notice board?

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Not a bad idea, they could help. I think it is good to send out the word so others can be aware. Maybe everyone will start to watch eachothers back more. Hopefully things work out best for you.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Thanks Julius :)
I'm going to do up a flyer today but I'm not sure of how specific to be. I could just say beware of motorists along that road in general and encourage the teenage tennis players along there to be careful in general and to only run along there in groups carrying a phone etc.
Or I could put out a more specific warning about this guy describing the car and aying he has a 'heavy accent' which is the way the crime watchers report described this guy looking for info from the general public.
I don't think it's neccessary to be specific about what the accent is. If people see his car and he yells at them they'll realise he could be dangerous immediately rather than just some guy being a wanker as he drives past.
For me it's a toss up - warn them about all possible nutters in general or just make sure they pay extra attention to someone matching his description so they are more alert if they see him?

Re: Got freaked out this morning
sounds good, description of his car and details about that person will be great but an overall cautious of potential assclowns driving will be fine. I'd go with the description more, so they will pay extra attention. Instead of just thinking yea its just another assclown thinking im a hottie  LOL. I think it'll be a good idea to leave out his race, but do give out a clue. Heavy Accent will help, dark hair, beard? dark men, clothes? let the public have a good idea what he looks like. Its best they instantly are aware that a men that fits the description may be dangerous, rather then unaware of what the men looks like and it could result in them being to late to respond or get away when danger those occur.

Yeah I think you're right. To be honest his voice was what I noticed more than anything else because he was so instantly angry so I didn't think I'd need to describe more than that and the car. Still he only yelled when he was coming towards me, not when he turned around and tried to come up behind me until I saw him. He might not make any noise when approaching people from behind.
I'm generally thinking it's not a good idea for parents and tennis instructors of those tennis players to let them run down there alone at all anyway though. The more I think about it if I was on foot rather than on the bicycle I could have been in a lot more trouble. That's one of the things that bothers me the most. It's 10 am, daylight in an area parents let their kids run around without supervision all the time.
My flatmate was telling me last night when I got home from training that she saw something on the news about a guy they caught in Adelaide who'd abducted a girl.
He's in critical condition in the hospital because he crashed his car while she was in it and she escaped. That's what I call karma! They didn't give out details of the guy though and the area was a little farther north than I'd expect so odds are it's not the same guy.

Yea it sure will be more dangerou on foot, I believe ones you get those flyiers out people will note down not to be careless anymore.
That girl that escape, thats good she did. For that lunatic, well serves him right. I remember here in seattle, not too long ago. It was spread around that a men was going around preying on women at night that takes the metro bus. I heard he would feel on the women and harrass them in every way. Im not sure if he raped them but the news of a pervert like that gets spread around rather quick even in a big city such as seattle. We have a community neighborhood watch here where I live, everyone looks out for crimes we do pretty well. We just ignore the homeless addict that occusionally hang around. Once they act up though they are sure to be straighten out. Unlike my old nieghborhood in southend seattle, my nieghborhood now is a lot more peaceful.

Re: Got freaked out this morning
It's encouraging to hear your neighbourhood watch is successful Julius! :)
It's easy to get pessimistic and just think that over time communities everywhere are just getting more and more dangerous despite anything we might do.
Maybe some of us need to take note of good examples like yours :)
I'd rep you for that but I have to spread it around!

Re: Got freaked out this morning
Yea we have these sign around the nieghborhood discouraging any ciminal activities. It would has this cartoon character that appear to be watching and it would read, nieghborhood watch or something like that. People are quick to spread the word if anything does happen. It makes the people feel secure and the bad people discourage from trying. It makes them feel like every window around has someone watching them and if they do try something bad they'll be busted right away.

Will you to just get a room ?

Re: Got freaked out this morning
It's a twisted person who actually thinks this type of thread is a turn on or flirting ground. Perhaps the same kind of person who would like to be called 'Master".

We have those around here where I live too. It may seem worthless at first, but try to imagine you're about to break into someone's house. The thought that you could get caught and sent to jail for a few years will scare you, but then to see a sign like that, just might make you chicken out. (Chicken can be good thing).
Another thing that helps is they let police officers drive their police cars home when they get off from work. Seeing a police car in the yard would definitely discourage someone from burgulurizing or any thing else, even if it was a block or so away.

Yeah I can see how both your communities have good systems going. For some reason people in my area don't have a tight community structure. For example I live in a fairly big apartment complex and see my neighbours walking in and out regularly but I don't know any of their names.
What we need is someone on the local council with the same good, constructive community watch ideas that you and Julius have.
I have to admit I never see police cars parked anywhere except while they are attending a crime scene and I can see how just seeing a police car in the area would be a huge deterrant!
