Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
This cuban is nuts. He has crazy speed(closest thing to RJJ and PBF that I've seen of the prospects) He has really good power, combinations, reflexes, he has great technique... The only problem I have with him is he tends to be a little flat footed in order to get more power, and if he wasn't so flat footed I think he would get hit even less, but this guy is insane... I haven't seen a prospect like him yet.

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
He seems like the best out there.
Could be a bit more cautious defensively but he probably will be when the competition gets better. Probably won't be able to jump so many weightclasses like Floyd did since he's so short but he looks like a can't miss type.

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
He definently had an easy night. I like his style, he's going to be someone important.
Thank God he defected...we've been missing the Kid Galivan's that Cuba has kept toiling in the amateurs! Savon and Stevenson would have been impressive to see in the pros and we were denied that opportunity.
O. Solis seems to be a big time fighter in the future too....if he can keep his weight down

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
They have him on the fast track also. In April he is fighting again, that will be 3 fights in 2008 already!!
I think they are looking to have him make a big bang in 2009.

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
From what little i've seen and heard about this guy.......he is a bad dude !!! His little flaws will go away the better guys he fights hopefully. Right now he just basically doesn't even use or need defense very much against the guys he's been in with.

He looks awesome so far but I want to see his power v a rugged guy in and around the weight class. Everything else looks excellent thus far.

He looks a little too much like Guzman for my liking, but I hope he will settle down in his punches a little more. As for competition he had one fight against a guy who was lik e44-11 in his third fight and he ko'ed the guy.

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
Ive been following him since his first pro fight. He is the future of boxing. He riminsd me of a cross between young Tyson and Guzman.

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
He was awesome last friday.Unfortuanatly We only saw one round but this is one to watch .He has the Look and mentality.
-
Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
He's an outstanding prospect. Very skilled and talented. But like all prospects I'm curious to see what happens when he gets hit on the chin
-
Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
Really impressive. I think he was just flat-footed because he was so much faster than the other guy that he could get away with it. If he can take a punch he could be spectacular.
-
Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
He's no spring chicken he's had over 400 Amateur fights, and won a gold for Cuba in the Olympics. So, he should be stepping up real quick.

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
The boys got some mad skills, Edwards was no world beater but he wasn't a total tomato can. I think he'll be moved pretty fast from here on out. He was supposed to face freddie Norwood until Norwood pulled out... that IMO would have been another walk through for Gamboa!

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
Thanks for the fights Bean.... I was going to say he looks very sharp in the small clip, but my screen was skipping to much to get a real idea of movement and speed... And very hard to sum up a guy from watching one random round... But he didn't look like a dud by any means so i'm looking forward to checking out those other fights...

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
Reminds me a bit of Meldrick too. I wonder though if he becomes more of a defensive fighter when he steps up against guys that could hurt him, right now people are just overwhelmed by his attack so it doesn't really matter.

I dont know if you guys agree but he reminds me alot of
Juan John John Molina the way he throws his punches and how up right he is ,
It will be interesting when he steps up as his chin is up in the air.
ANYONE AGREE ?

Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
He is way better than Molina... if anything he is a RJJ version of Guzman. He is an incredible athlete... has to have the fastest hands in boxing. One thing though is he has really short legs which really limits his movement ability, but his defense is good from what I've seen... I think his reflexes are so quick that nobody is going to be able to catch him, and if he has the power he seems to have He could very well overwhelm guys like RJJ used to. Once again the only problem for me is that I like a person can get in and out super quickly, and while he has unbelievable handspeed I don't think he has the footspeed of the PBF's,leonard's,RJJ's, Ali's of the sport. Even though he is much slicker than Mosley was at lightweight I could see tall guys as he moves up give him the same troubles they did Mosley if he can't box effectively backwards or if he can't potshot.

That is the same person I thought of when watching him. He looks a lot like Meldrick Taylor imo.
Very impressive, he definitely seems to know how to handle himself. It's always interesting to see how these amateur superstars hold up when they do have some soft opposition early in their career. Hopefully they can get someone in there who can actually test him soon so we can see what he's really made of.
Still, he looks like he has all the right stuff right now, definitely interested in seeing how all of those Cuban defectors do this year.

He's clearly faster than Molina. But that's not a bad comparison.

Way better than Molina lol
The guy is a novice who hasnt fought top class Pro fighters yet , i agree his has the potential to be the better fighter , but Molina was a top fighter and world champ to say Gamboa is WAY BETTER at this stage is total rubbish.
-
Re: Perhaps the next legitimate p4p heir... Yuriorkis Gamboa
Can't miss future world champion. He is the best prospect out there right now. Very skillful. It'll be good to see when they start moving him through the gears, how he stands up against top class opposition. He is definately on the fast track right now though. Although I guess when you blow away the opposition you can take alot of fights!

Please... he could be an ATG with his talent, If he has a chin he has the capability. As for him being a novice? I think over 400 fights in the amateur is anything but novice, and most of them were in Cuba which even holds more precedence because they have so many amazing athletes that just go into boxing.

Your words not mine - i quote :
He COULD be an all time great with his talent.
IF his CHIN has the capability.
So as i stated there are doubts about him as hes not proven.
And i ment he is a novice PRO fighter as everyone else on here seemed to know wot i ment. Of course he IS A NOVICE PRO , yes he has bags of talent , but that isnt always enough to make you a great pro champ , ie . Howard Davis for instance most outstanding boxer of the 1976 olyimpic games and didnt cut it as a pro.

Sorry, but I agree to disagree Yuriorkis' style fits the pro style so well that he is in another league. Howard Davis was great at the amateurs because he was fast, patient, and smart, but he didn't have the right mentality to be a pro were as many of these cubans do... they are tough men who literally fight for their lives.

I don't disagree on Gamboa - I have posted numerous times on this board about him, and he is obviously something special. However, I am not so sure whether your remark actually applies to Cubans in general. These are great, great fighters with a remarkable training morale, but once they've defected, living as pro's in settings where they quite litereally does not have to 'fight for their lives _anymore_', well, some of them do just not seem cut for this experience. Prime examples of thus lack of self-discipline are Jorge Luis Gonzalez and to a certain point Juan Carlos Gomez. Odlanier Solis seem to have some weight issues as well, but obviously the jury is still out on him.
