Cotto, Gomez fight announced!
http://www.fightnews.com/MC-Gomez1.jpg
Undefeated WBA welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto and Contenders’ star Alfonso Gomez pose during today's press conference in New York City to officially announce their April 12 clash at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and telecast on HBO's World Championship Boxing.

:tombstone:Poor Alfonso, I don't think he as any idea what he has gotten himself into. He actually thinks that he is going to knock Cotto out. Talk about delusional. Alfonso does have heart, and I'm sure he'll make a go of it for a short time, but Cotto is going to destroy him.
Here's a few more pics I just found.

Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
I just found some quotes from the press conference.
411mania.com: Sports - Gomez-Cotto Presser
"At this point of my career all my fights are important," stressed Cotto. "I don't care if I'm the favorite or not, all I know is that I'm coming to win. I expect to train a hundred percent and I'm going out of the ring the same way I came up into the ring: as the world champion.....I had a great 2007 and I want an even better 2008."
------------------------------------
"I know I'll be hungrier than Cotto," stated Gomez. "Cotto has made millions of dollars in the ring. He has been a world champion for a long time. I know he has hunger, but not like mine. When I first started boxing, I visiualized myself standing at a podium like I am today, talking about fighting for a world title. Cotto is a great, strong champion. He hits very hard to the body, but I'll be more hungrier and I will beat him. I'll be announced as the world champion on April 12th!"
-------------------------------------
Also on hand was a passionate IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (29-1, 27 KOs), who is already chomping on the bit for his rematch with Antonio Margarito. "I've been waiting a long time to get my hands back on Margarito. Emanuel Steward and I are working on my game plans. Margarito gave me my only loss and I will get it back on April 12th!"

Rep for the pics. I like that one of Cotto playing Nintendo DS with his son.
Didn't Margarito show up?

its nice to see a press conference where everyones in good spirits and theres no foul mouthing................... with all the crap talk thats gone on in recent press days its a breath of fresh air to see well mannered professional behaviour
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
Well at least Gomez will get paid well for the sure beating he will take:-\
As far as Cintron, I am so looking forward to watching Tony beat him back to the Stone Age and hopefully running him out of the game. I'm going to feel really silly if Cintron ko's Margarito. Man will I take some heat if that happens:p
Good pics Diane:)

I completely agree!!! It was the same way when Cotto and Mosley were doing the press tour thing.
That is one of the many reasons why I love Cotto so much, he doesn't have to resort to shit talking, and acting like an immature spoiled brat, like some fighters we know. Cotto lets his fists do his talking in the ring, like it should be.

Gomez is going to need a good payday in order to pay for the plastic surgery he will probably have to have done on his face. ;)
Same with me on Cintron, I hope Tony beats him just as bad as last time. Cintron deserves it for crying like a baby after his fight with Feliciano.

Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
I'm really not starting to like all these comments of how easy it will be for Cotto and what not.
Any fighter with the right mind set, will, heart and determination. Sprinkle a little bit of luck and you've got yourself an animal in the ring regardless of name, record etc. etc.
I'm predicting a Cotto TKO, but I think Gomez is gonna Uuuuh! and Ahhhh! us before he goes down.
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
Man,what Margarito is one lazy dude! Bum couldn't even be bothered to turn up!:(

:D Hi my friend CutMeMick , i want to make use this moment for THANKS YOU the rep. that you gave me . We all knows that in boxing everything can happen ,but these fight it suposse to be a KO , but the other thing is that i dont think that Gomez will be a threat for Cotto , first if he fight toe to toe he going have problem because he is not a hard puncher , second i saw that Gomez is a flabby guy ; can he sustain a body punch of Cotto?:-\ . Dont misunderstand me my friend and i dont want take off credits to Gomez maybe he is good but these fight for me is too earlier for him and wrong decision , in this thread i just wanted to put some point of view that we have to think about ........

Gomez just said his dream as a kid was to be at a podium talking about fighting for a world title, nothing to do with winning it. I guess he knew his limitations even when he was little.

Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
Before every big fight I often state that it's wrong to say that one guy has no chance.
But in reality I see Alfonso having little to no effect on the train that is about to hit him.
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
I'll be rooting for Gomez.
He's up against it alright but he's got a chance.

I actually think this is going to be an ooh and ahhh kind of fight, or at least I hope it is. I really like Gomez; maybe just cause' he's the only dude from the Contender I actually liked. I will kind of be pulling for him. It'll have to be better than the Rubble/Klit fight:-\

Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
I don't know what it is you DON'T see in Gomez, but if he fights half the fight he did against Gatti, he could stand a good chance to outbox cotto.
Why is no one acknowledging the fact that Gomez is MUCH bigger than Cotto? So what if he doesn't hit hard... accumulation could have an effect.
What if he can take more licks than Quintana? Will he pose a threat then? I just think it is amazing that he went 10 with Ben Tackie and KO'd Gatti, but no one thinks he has a chance. As big as Cotto is, he is still smaller than alot of WW's.
Love Cotto, but would pay money to see a good upset!
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
Oh, BTW, Gomez has never been dominated or stopped, not even when he fought Middleweights (who are now fighting at SMwt). So what makes you all so sure Cotto will steamroll him?
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
Gomez has a good chance, hes big, fought bigger men, has good resiliance and decent boxing ability.
I dont think hes gonna get blown away for a second, he handled Tackie and fought with him at a good pace, he didnt dance around.
Cotto doesnt throw an awfull lot of punches, he doesnt have a busy style, he is effective but Gomez would at leat be able to outwork him if nothing else, also Cotto has been hurt by smaller men, in fact has he fought a genuine welter that didnt start in lower weights? Gomez may surprise Cotto with his strength.
As long as Gomez pushes the fight and doesnt let Cotto dictate the pace he will do well

Tackie was a decent fighter, but he's hardly exceptional.
And Cotto may well be one of the p4p hardest hitters in the game today, add that to his already impressive yet ever improving boxing skills and an unshakable will and I feel ALFONSO IS IN TROUBLE BEFORE BELL ONE.

Yes, Cotto is a hard hitter, but Gomez already fought Jesse Brinkley, who is a hellacious puncher at SuMWt--who just KO'd Otis Griffin. So he can take the punch of a natural SuMwt, but he can't take Cotto's punch?
You all are talking like Gomez is the one who is coming up in weight. Remember that besides Gatti, this might be one of Gomez' SMALLEST opponents.
I am not saying it is all Gomez, but this is a much better (and closely fitted) matchup than most are giving him credit for.
On the other side of the fence, I give Cotto credit for stepping up in size, as I am sure he knows he will have to face bigger boxers next (Margarito, Cintron, Williams, etc.). I just want to see who gets derailed in this bout.
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
But the fact is Gomez has to make his frame fit Welterweight now. A fighter coming down in weight can compromise his own strength and endurance.
-
Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
I agree to an extent,I think Gomez is going t be tougher than some expect,I don't see Cotto rolling him over as easily as some say. I mean the guy hasn't lost and if I remember correctly,he's fought higher than 147 quite a few times right? I'm going for Cotto for sure but a UD. Gomez has that tough look about him. He's dam limited but tough, like David Diaz.
LMAO@Sweetpea and the Marg joke! I couldn't stop laughing! Anyone know why Tony wasn't there?

Probably practicing his decapitation technique for Margarito....
I would say the distance, if I had to guess. Tijuana to NYC is a long haul...

Paaaaana!!! Saludos...

Well to be fair those fights you speak of were 5 rounders and a 7 rounder not the same as 12 Round Championship bout. The words alone carry some wait on ones mind. ;)

Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
Awsome pics...........outstanding!
First of all, great smiles and good positive energy you can see from those boxers. Second, Cotto looks too confident and IMO looks like "what did Gomes get himself into"?. Alfonso looks determined and the quote that he said about Cotto having millions. For Cotto i don't think it's even about that. He's there to get a job done and believe me when i say this "It's GONNA BE DONE" because that is what he's known for through out his career. Alfonso does have heart and confidence but IMO it's not going to be enough for Alfonso that night. Like Alfonso said "Cotto has great punching power" and that is exactly what he is going to feel that night.
Cintron looks impressive. Don't get me wrong I still root for A.M. and i believe that that is going to be the match to watch out for. Cintron along with Emmanual could be a threat since E.M. is making Cintron bring out what Cintron himself was uncapable of knowing himself what he had. So it's going to be gr8.

Hope to see you post more often as time permits....

Re: Cotto/Gomez - Margarito/Cintron press conference - Pics included
looks like cotto is more interested in playing that nintendo ds with his son then waste his time with gomez.
I guess gomez is cottos boldimir. I don't like this fight but theres really no other choice is there? floyd took on a natural bigger guy  and ran from him all night. Cotto is taking on a guy that has fought middleweights but its just gomez;D
I hate the contender fighters, they walk around like they really star. I hate how I think gomez things his MAB. thats why I want cotto to be that ass from turnbuckle to turnbuckle
