He should have done this earlier though.
Walking around at 180 seems real light.
If he couldn't dodge any more punches at heavyweight.What makes him think he will in a faster light heavyweight division.Chris do us the favor by retiring.
Unfortunately I have to agree with Fightfan. Chris Byrd had his better years beaten out of him. More than likely what will happen is he'll be able to take the punches of the light heavies while cruising to a UD loss. If he had bumped down sometime after beating Holyfield he might still be something at this point.
But who knows- maybe the extra weight was slowing him down and now that he's lighter he'll be greased lightning. Put him in with a tomato can and let's see how he does. (And Eddie Chambers needs to be watching closely as well).
I think it makes him a totally different fighter...his punches never bothered heavyweights but he's going to be a BIG light heavyweight and when he hits those little guys he's going to do some damage.
He should have done it a while ago or even just move down to cruiser...Jirov and Toney would have been good fights for him.
Chris Byrd is a shining example of why there should be no "super heavyweight division"....he didn't have power but he won belts
If not for age I think at LHW Byrd would be great...But he is past his best years now...5 years ago he could have run the division...I would have went 50/50 with him and Jones...Depended on who was having a better night....I always said Byrd could have been the best Cruiserweight of all time if he campaigned there...
I was expecting him to have a go at cruiserweight but light heavy?!
Has that EVER been attempted in the history of boxing that a former heavyweight world champ moves down TWO divisions?
If he really does walk around at 180 I'm amazed. That's less than Ricky Hatton :D
Good luck to him if he has a go. I don't think his age matters at all at 175 to be honest. Chad Dawson is just about the only fighter there who doesnt have a bus pass.
Hopkins 43, Tarver 40, Johnson...not sure but looks at least 60.
He might do well.....
Byrd is shot. I can't see him being competitive anymore

But Byrd has absorbed a helluva lot more punishment than all of them put together, probably. Has Hopkins ever been hit with a punch as big as the one Ibeabuchi put Byrd on queer street with? Has Tarver tasted the deadliest 1-2 of the heaviest-handed fighter in any division? None of them have competed, let alone ascended to the top of the heap of the HW division. I think Byrd is just as shot as Erik Morales- he's been caught with too many good punches and though he can speak and sound like he has all his marbles, something is gone from him.Quote:

Byrd has always fought at heavy and was a long reigning champ there. I can't think of a fighter who had their career at heavyweight and then after becoming a champ moved down two weight divisions
